    Great Bedtime Reader
All of the Illustrated Chosen Classics are great bedtime readers. My wife sits in the hall of the children's bedrooms and reads these stories to them at bedtime. The difference between these books and the traditional novels is that these stories move very fast. My son, in particular, will hear one of these abridged classic novels and, if he likes it, will then read the full unabridged version on his own. Kind of gives our kids a taste of the classics without having to start reading a really large and sometimes overwhelming looking book. My son is 10 and my daughter is 15. We have about 30 of these types of books in our library.
    A Classic Still
Like many people of my age (62), I read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a child because at that time it was widely perceived to be a child's or young adult's book. This is unfortunate as it is not nor has it ever been directed at the young. In my rereading I discovered for the first time why it is still called the original great American novel. Huckleberry, like Twain, is opinionated and perceptive. His narration and point of view drive the novel forward. Rather than relegate this work to the children's shelves or castigate it as racist, folks should embrace this novel for what it is, a bildungsroman that shows the growth of a country as well as the growth of its young protagonist.
It captivated a classroom full of surly teens
I teach English, and the junior year in North Carolina is devoted to American literature. I approached Huck Finn with no small amount of trepidation because of Twain's use of vernacular. I ran into the same problem with "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and solved that by listening to Ruby Dee's audio recording, which students loved. I purchased this recording of Huck Finn, and it was to die for fabulous. Students read along in their books as we listened to the recording, and it helped bring the characters and the story alive for them. They laughed when I hoped they would laugh, and they understood the novel so much better by being able to listen to it. This recording was invaluable.
Reading this book as an adult is a whole different ...
Reading this book as an adult is a whole different experience. I'm fairly sure the versions I read as a child were watered down. I don't have any memory of murder and mayhem in the versions I read as a child. All the same it was highly entertaining and deserving of being a classic.
    Friendship and mischieviousness.
I grew up reading this book, a story about Huckleberry Finn and his adventurous life on the Mississippi River as a boy. He would be considered a hoodlum in this day and age, at the time it was written he was an orphan and had no one to help him grow with morals however he is a rather a good boy with pretty good morals and this story is a classic. The story is also about friendship.

Title: The Altar of the Dead
    Author: Henry James
    Narrator: Jim Killavey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-15-09
    Publisher: Jimcin Recordings
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Classics, World Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The Altar of the Dead was first published in the collection Terminations in 1895. It is a fable of life and death significance which explores what happens when a man tries to keep the remembrance of his dead friends, to save them from being forgotten entirely in the rush of everyday events. He meets a woman who shares his ideals, only to find that the past places what seems to be an impassable barrier between them. Although James was not a religious man, at least in the conventional sense, this story shows a deep spirituality in its treatment of mortality and the transcendent power of unselfish love. Critics have generally rated this tale very high among James' works, with some calling it a "glorious fable," "magnificently written," and "one of his finest." James himself proudly placed the story at the head of volume 17 of the New York Edition (1907 - 09) of his fiction, before even "The Beast in the Jungle". The tale also appeared in a number of later anthologies.

This story is Henry James at his best. As he ages
This story is Henry James at his best. As he ages, George Stransom can't let go of his love for Mary Antrim, who died before they could be wed. He seems to be successful at work but his devotion to Mary leads him to lavishly embellish a chapel in a Catholic church into an altar to Mary. He adds a candle for each friend who dies and spends more and more time there among his lost loved ones. From his first visit to the church, he notices a woman in black who often visits his chapel and as time goes on they develop a deep friendship. The reader can't help wishing that these two could spend less time in the past and learn to enjoy one another in the present, but alas, it is too late when they arrive at that possibility. The story ends with a "Gift of the Magi" twist and the reader closes the book with a sigh.

    A literary memento mori
In Henry Jamesâ âThe Altar of the Deadâ , a man, George Stransom, is horrified by the idea of how brief our time is and how quickly we are forgotten and so he builds an altar of candles for the people he has known who have died in an effort to keep their memories alive for a bit longer. There are candles for all of his late acquaintances except for one, who did him a terrible injustice. After some arrangements this altar is installed in a church and the man visits regularly. A woman begins sitting at the altar, also visiting her dead. Eventually, bound by grief, they begin a sort of friendship, until a revelation occurs that seemingly makes their companionship untenable.
The entire story is a sort of literary memento mori , which I enjoy, and the writing is itself like multiple candles in the nightâboth luminous and dark. Itâs the sort of story that can be read multiple times without losing its capacity to impress.
The idea of a person not truly being gone until they are forgotten is also covered in Kevin Brockmeierâs quite good The Brief History of the Dead , which is based on the belief of some African tribes that there are three types of people, the living, the recently departed (whom the living still remember) and the dead whose names are only known.
    The Altar of the Dead
The Altar of the Dead, by Henry James, about a man bsessed with worshipping his dead, is overall a good book.

Don is great, sound effects, the whole bit
Where does Fesito Goes to Market rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of my fave kids ones
What did you like best about this story?
It is a really heartwarming tale, but Don Cheadle really makes it. He surprised me, it really sounds like he put a lot of effort into this.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    the bike ride :D
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, but I did giggle a little.
    Any additional comments?
I'll be downloading another Don Cheadle read tale if I can find one.
One Good Turn Yields Unexpected Consequences
I made the mistake of listening to Alan Rickman read another Nelson Mandela favorite African Folktales selection, "The Ring of the King," first, so this story was a letdown in both narration and plot. But it might have been just a B-minus plot with B-minus narration even if I had never heard the Rickman. We'll never know for sure now. What I can tell you is that the story is basically forgettable, with a moral (Do well unto others, because they may in turn do well by you when YOU need help) that is somewhat undermined by dubious "hero" Fesito's snotty, self-aggrandizing attitude (he helps a seriously ill child, Kyoko, but he does so very, very begrudgingly, and is not appropriately humbled when Kyoko later saves him in return, instead being prideful that he succeed in overcoming his enemies and reaching market safely, with all his wares intact). As for the narration, I don't think Cheadle gives it his all, and when he does try, it comes off as weird variations in vocal volume that force the listener to quickly adjust the volume up or down.
Still, this short story held my attention sufficiently to make me want to listen until the end to see what happened. Also, there's African folk music!! Grade: B.

Very well put edition. The stories are linked one to the other in a way that it doesn't let the reader put the book down. Sherazade invented this strategy to stay alive and cure the sultans temper. Cure through tale. The novels themselves are not always the most interesting but they portray far away lands and times
    Pessimo, veramente pessimo
È totalmente inutile ne sconsiglio assolutamente l'acquisto.
