A TRULY FUNNY AND WELL WRITTEN READ. An early version of Ogden Nash
If you enjoy a good writer who can truly "play" with words or if you like a good parody or if you enjoyed the works of Ogden Nash, this little work will most certainly please you.
Guy Whitmore Carryl was born in New York City in 1973 and died at the age of 31 in 1904. While he had a very short writing career, he most certainly made the most of it. He wrote for such publications as Harper's Magazine, Life and Collier's. He is best known for his works such as we find here in "Fables for the Frivolous, one of several volumes of such work he published during his lifetime. The work being reviewed here was first published in 1898 and has been reissued many times. It is a collection of parodies of Aesop's Fables set in rhyme.
I have to tell you that I found myself chuckling through this entire work and at times laughing out loud. As has been pointed out, even though Carryl was American, he most certainly was blessed with the dry wit of an Englishman. He is able to write some very ridiculous things, and do it with a straight face...so to speak.
Each of these fables ends with a "moral," and each of these morals ends with a pun. Carryl was most certainly a master of the English language and used it to amuse. He rewrote many of Grimm's Fairy Tales and Mother Goose Rhymes, turning them all into subtle parodies. This is all good stuff folks.
This Kindle edition is pretty good although, as with so many books printed, the formatting is in paragraph form rather than that of poem. In this case it does not matter that much as the reader will instantly see what has happened and quickly adjust. I cannot complain too much as the thing was free and copied by volunteers.

    Fables for the frivolous
I just love this sort of thing. From Wikipedia, "Fables for the Frivolous is one of the earliest works by the American parodist Guy Wetmore Carryl. These fables are adapted from Jean de La Fontaine's original writings. The Aesop-style fables are written in verse, and are light-hearted re-tellings of fables from two centuries before, each ending with a moral and a pun. Among the more celebrated of the fables are The Persevering Tortoise and the Pretentious Hare, The Arrogant Frog and the Superior Bull, and The Sycophantic Fox and the Gullible Raven."
    American Precursor to Ogden Nash
Carryl's talent is in the same league as Ogden Nash's or Lewis Carroll's. He was an American, but his humor has more of a British (a la Monty Python) feel: macaronic, affectatiously aloof, and nonsensical. If you are serious about whimsy, you will love Guy Wetmore Carryl.
    Hilarious!
Already the title "Fables for the Frivolous" brought a smile to my face.

    Publisher's Summary:
This chilling masterpiece by Edgar Allan Poe, published in 1841, has been recognized as the world's first modern detective story(!). C. Auguste Dupin is a man in Paris who tries to solve the mystery of the brutal murder of two women. Numerous witnesses heard a suspect, though no one agrees on what language was spoken. At the murder scene, Dupin finds a hair that does not appear to be human... As the first fictional detective, Poe's Dupin displays many traits which became literary conventions in subsequent fictional detectives, including Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot.

    The Alpha Detective Story
The Murders in the Rue Morgue is a very small short story that was originally published in Grahamâs Magazine back in 1841. You could scarcely find a simpler plot. Two women are violently murdered in their own apartment by a killer whose entrance and escape seem impossible. Several male voices are heard during the time of the murder, one of which speaks in a language that none of the witnesses can identify. C. Auguste Dupin and his associate travel to the murder scene and solve the mystery.
Dupin is regarded as the first detective (despite not being an actual detective) in the history of literature and The Murders in the Rue Morgue the first detective story. Itâs a very simple story but Edger Allen Poe has such a deft skill as a writer that it feels perfectly crafted even if the solution is revealed almost immediately after the mystery is presented. Poe would use Dupin in several more stories and he is likely the inspiration from some of literatures most acclaimed sleuths including Sherlock Holmes who first appeared in 1887.
I really enjoyed the story and it can be easily read in its entirety in a single sitting over a coffee drink. If you donât like it, well, you wonât have spent much time from your life.
    Classic
The book holds its own after all these years. Edgar Allen Poe is a genius. The story is magical and engaging
    Poor contrast, difficult reading.
Just one question: my copy has a very poor contrast, making reading dificult.
Other e-books OK. I think the same is occuring with THE MYSTERY OF MARIE ROGET.
It looks like there is a bakground color, instead of black ink over a white sheet.
    Any help ?
    The original that others followed.
Poe's character, Auguste Dupin, is the original ecentric detective. Conan Doyle copied him in his writings of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle used the same writing style, story set-ups and even copied some of Poe's plots. The Dupin stories
were written forty years before Holmes.
    Five Stars
    Good novel.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Lady Windermere's Fan" is a four-act comedy by Oscar Wilde. The play was first published in 1893. Like many of Wilde's comedies, it bitingly satirizes the morals of society.
The story concerns Lady Windermere, who suspects that her husband is having an affair with another woman. She confronts him with it but although he denies it, he invites the other woman, Mrs. Erlynne, to his wife's birthday ball...
The best-known line of the play sums up the central theme: "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars" (Uttered by Lord Darlington).

An original story, the like of which is both rare and much appreciated.
I would give it a solid 5 stars. Itâs not everyoneâs cup of tea, though the beautiful spell it weaves certainly captivated me. The book has some lovely turns of phrase, having been written at a different time, perhaps when folks took greater pride in their communicational style (or it could just be that I too am from a different time). The author gave a great deal of consideration toward imagining the world through the eyes of his subject and whilst it amounts to an impossible task, has done so in a believable, insightful and artfully though-provoking way. When I finish a book I often ask myself if I would enjoy reading it again, at some future point. In this case, the answer is definitely yes.
    A jewel
I first read this book as a kid in the 1950's. A neighbor loaned it to me. I was fascinated by it, the first time I had read a book devoted to one animal in a personified way. It still evokes exactly the same feelings now as it did then. While a pure scientist might object to how personified and dramatized it is, based on reading other books on bears and grizzlies in particular, it seems pretty fact-based to me. A reader might wonder where the book, essentially a chronology, is going, but it does build to the conclusion, which is not earth-shattering but as touching and emotional as it is simple. It really conveys many things that we humans can relate to and feel. I've given it to my oldest child to read, and will eventually give it to the others.
The book is an easy read, has a simple style, and really helps the reader picture how things look from the animals' perspective. Animals do have intelligence and emotions, recent learnings show that even sharks do, so this book is probably more relevant and true to life than when it was written.
I recommend it to readers from about age 10 to the oldest adult will all enjoy it and come away thinking and feeling in ways they didn't expect.
    The ring of Life
I haven't read it in decades. I'm buying a copy for my library - maybe I'll be able to read it to the grandkids - or vice versa :) A fairly short story about the life and death of a grizzly. What stands out in my mind after all these years is the way the aging process is made part of life. Probably best for the budding naturalist rather than those who think predation is a dirty word and all carnivores should be muzzled. A great philosophical work for those who want to teach some of Nature's ways to the young. Its a pretty transparent allegory of our lives. Deals (gently but clearly) with topics like death, fear, competition - winning and loosing. I'd say ages 8 to 13, best read together with your child. (At least the first time!) I also loved his Two Little Savages - about camping & the outdoors.
    If bears could only talk
I enjoyed the story about the bear, I found it to be an easy read and interesting also. I animals could tell their story as this one did there would be many good books on the shelves now.
