Title: Danza!: Amalia Hernández and El Ballet Folklrico de México [Dance!: Amalia Hernández and the Folkloric Ballet of Mexico]

Author: Duncan Tonatiuh

Narrator: Adriana Sananes

Format: Unabridged

Length: 22 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-10-17

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7

Publisher's Summary:

As a child, Amalia always thought she would grow up to be a teacher - that was until she saw dancers perform in her town square. She was fascinated by the way they twirled and swayed, and she knew that someday she would be a dancer, too.

When she began to study dance, she studied many different types, including ballet and modern, under some of the best teachers in the world. But she didn't stop there. She also traveled throughout Mexico to learn its regional dances. Soon she founded her own dance company, El Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, where she integrated her knowledge of ballet and modern dance with folkloric dances. Her company then began performing all over the country - and soon all over the world - and became an international sensation that still tours today.

Five Stars

Our Folklorista loved it!

Five Stars

Loved it!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher at the Great Lakes and Midwest Independent Booksellers trade show The Heartland ...

is a lovely addition to Tonatiuh's body of work, and I look forward to hearing his name among the various 2017 award winners (again). I appreciate his attention to detail, and his efforts to find important stories to share with his readers. In this book, he turns his attention to dancer, choreographer, and troupe director Amalia Hernandez and El Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.

Tonatiuh traces Hernandez' life from the spark of interest in dance, through her classical training, and finally to the founding of her dance troupe. He highlights the awards the troupe gained, but only briefly mentions some of the challenges she faced. These are elaborated on more fully in the author's note. In the brief space available in a picture book, Tonatiuh accomplishes the goal of sparking interest in and celebrating the life of a woman not widely known in the U.S.

NOTE: I received a copy of this book from the publisher at the Great Lakes and Midwest Independent Booksellers trade show The Heartland Fall Forum.

Important and Diverse

When Amalia saw the dancers in her town square as a child, she knew that she wanted to be a dancer. She studied ballet and modern dance but always remembered those folk dancers from her childhood. Amalia traveled throughout Mexico, watching the different folk dances in different regions. She used her dancing and choreography skills to turn those dances into performances for the stage. Founding her own dance company, she became known throughout the world.

Tonatiuh uses his signature illustration style that is a delightful mix of folk images and modern edge. The illustrations are a match for the topic, each strengthening the other. He writes of the large amount of work and dedication that Hernández had as well as the vision she carried through her entire life of folk dance and its importance. Appropriate for ages 6-9.

Another Winner for Duncan Tonatiuh!

Duncan Tonatiuh's masterful storytelling and signature illustrations are back in Danza! This is the biography of Amalia Hernandez, a renowned Mexican dancer and founder of the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. Any child who has ever dreamed of being a dancer will relate to Amalia's story. The back matter provides more information about Amalia and folkloric dance and includes a glossary and bibliography. 5 stars for this well written biography!

Nice story

I saw this book and thought that it would be a good one to collect to read to my grandchildren when they are a little older. I read it and was very pleased with the story and illustrations. It teaches a good lesson about being the best that you can be and in a way that is easy to understand. I look forward to sharing it with my grandchildren.

How to Become the Best You

Life lessons taught in a fun way. Might be appreciated better by boys, but there might be a few girl ninjas who like it. The introduction to a culture different than theirs by the pictures is good also.

My kid loved it

From my 6 year old:

"I liked this book because it taught me some things. It taught me how to be a good ninja. My favorite ninja rule was all of them. I want to read this book over and over, as many times as I want to."

That Ninja Book

My 8 year old grandson said: "I love it!". It is convenient to have an ebook to whip out when I am babysitting. It is a sweet little book, I like that it doesn't have a villain!

This is a sweet and useful booking

This is a sweet and useful booking. My 5 year old grandson is taking karate and especially related to this.

Ineffective without the cards?

This is the 'original' audio from the cassette/CD, there are lots of references to "the cards in your cassette case" and other materials. There seems to be no option to download and print these for use with the digital download. Not having the additional materials (or in this case, an option to download and print them) makes the audio much less useful in the teaching of times tables. Disappointing, I feel this teaching tool is incomplete without the option to print the cards.

Members Reviews:

Destined to be a classic!

If you would like your young child to be inspired to think in a more creative or even a scientific way, your should let them read this fun, clever and colorful book that is based on a true story about a famous child prodigy who lived in China long ago. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend

Very good book! My daughter loves it so much! Highly recommended!

I highly recommend this book as a fun

This joyfully illustrated picture book transports young readers to the year 200 C.E. (or A.D.) into Ancient China and amongst royals as is indicated by crowns and clothing.

The occasion is the presentation of an elephant - the first elephant to ever be seen in their country. Excitement runs high and soon discussion of the huge animal's weight ensues. So they must devise a method to determine its weight.

Cao Chong is a child prodigy recognized in Chinese History and he has a plan. It stumps and amazes the others that this child can know how to accomplish the task.

Arbordale publishes books for children that are school age and their books are attractive and entertaining. However, the main feature, in my opinion, is the capability they have of providing materials at the back of the book that take the reader beyond the limits of the story and engages his or her mind with activities in ways that demonstrate the science or math behind the actual story and even presents new ideas for their perusal.

The back pages for Creative Minds in this book include information about ancient China and modern China even providing maps that show city locations and China's borders for reader comparison. The principal of buoyancy and displacement is presented in understandable and demonstrable methods in the Creative Minds activities.

I highly recommend this book as a fun, entertaining, and highly educational book. Click here to see the Teaching Activities on the Arbordale website.

DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Arbordale Publishing to facilitate this review of my own opinions which are freely given.

It is a great gift for kids

My daughter Abigail's review:

The book is very clever in the way it uses the curiosity of the reader to lure them into learning something while they don't even realize they're learning.

Also, the book shows the readers that even young children can accomplish things that adults find elusive.

It is a great gift for kids

Love it!

This true story is written in an engaging fashion with lessons incorporated. Not only does Chong know how to solve the problem, but is also able to show the adults how children have really great ideas as well! I love the illustrations showing the Chinese culture in a colorful and friendly way. As a retired, primary educator, I'm excited to share this read with the little ones in my life!
