Clay Changed the Community

A beautiful pictorial look at pottery art in Mexico. The connection that Juan has to pottery and nature is shown in the book. I liked the afterward that gives readers more background information about Juan and the pottery making process he used. I enjoyed the illustrations that show how Juan used natural elements surrounding him to create his art.

Lost in the Adventure

Dumas does an excellent job capturing the transition of a mother's lessons to her daughter and making the story come alive. I was truly lost in the adventure of the story and didn't realize I had learned something until it was all over! This is exactly the type of reading I want for my children. Dumas' voice enhances the ambiance of the setting and is sure to have young readers coming back for more. I would definitely recommend this book for grades 2-6.

A beautiful story from a mother to her daughter

Jala and the Wolves was written by a mother for her daughter and you can hear it in the story. Narrated by the author, she sets the tone of her story with her breathy voice and purposeful cadence. She lets the story pour out of her like syrup. She never rushes and the story could easily be played from car ride to bedtime.

Jala is a curious, intelligent, bean-pie-loving girl with an encyclopedic knowledge of animals. When a mirror appears in her room as she waits for breakfast the day before thanksgiving, it transports her to a place where she becomes a leader at her young age. She has a special connection with wolves that fuels her adventure. She absorbs information like a sponge, and in her adventure all the facts she devoured guide her with the wolves.

The vivid language pulls you into the story. The way she describes how things look and smell is accessible even to younger readers. There are some elements that may be a little heavy for younger children but many themes run through the book that can spark a dialogue about animals, family, and responsibility.

There were two things I really loved about this book that made it really stand out among other childrens books and chapter books. The first was how the wolves communicate. They dont speak to each other but allow expressions and smells to convey messages to each other. Instead of making the wolves anthropomorphic, they are left as wolves and we are given a more authentic-feeling story with animals.

The second was that though Jala is beautiful, it isnt a main component of the story. Its a side note. Jalas looks dont advance the story or come in handy. Jala relies on her intelligence and resourcefulness to solve problems.

This audiobook is a solid pick to share between parents and children. It clocks in at just over an hour and should this book become a favorite to my little one, Id be inclined to pick up a hard copy of the book to read aloud and provide my own interpretation.

Step Through The Looking Glass Into The Lair

How fun was this book I th ink it's great for a lot of age groups for read to, read along and of course for pre chapter book readers ready to grow on their own. The main character is a spunky girl who through a magical mirror enters the world of the wolves.

But what I really loved was the subtext of the story line not often is there subtext in a kids book but the message is clear in this one.

not just funny smart!

I really, really enjoyed this book. I enjoy the bizarre and humorous style of Elias Zapple stories, but this story may be my favorite, it is not just funny but it is smart, well written and action packed. Vivid characters and writing style, highly recommend this book for adventurous little girls.

If you like a funny story.....

If you like a funny story - pick this up. We've read a few of these books now and they are quite hilarious. The author crafts great characters with lots of flaws and attitude then he adds a few problems and voila! you've got a great story.

I love all of Elias Zapple's books and Emma the astronaut is a really great character. I love Elias Zapple's humour.

I love Elias Zapple's books. The Dragon series is unique and hilarious. Book 2 is a doozy! I got it for my grandson for Christmas who has the first book. Loved it! Emma, the astronaut is now attempting a rescue. Not to give out any spoilers....this is a must read for kids.

The first book was good and this was one may be even better. Ideal really for any young child who is already reading. Looks great on my Kindle. A good addition to my library.

Loved it

My son and I are enjoying these books that I read as a kid. Mr Toad has to learn some lessons about pride and he helps some of the other animals learn lessons too. All done with entertainment, old style of writing where words matter and stories aren't dumbed done.

a great story

Maybe I am trying to rekindle my youth..a great story with some "how to be a good citizen" lessons accompanied by a little wilderness awareness. This really rates all 5 stars, and we're the pictures included I would have given it all 5 and grumbled that it was being short changed.

I loved Old Mr. Toad!

My 9 year old son says: "It's a good book for children who are just starting to read by themselves with no help. It has the characters from Old Mother West Wind like Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Mr. Black Snake, Reddy Fox. The story was good. There were a bunch of different chapters which sort of were connected to each other. It was definitely worth reading. I learned some, too."

Excellent Family Christmas Story

What made the experience of listening to The Ultimate Christmas Present the most enjoyable?

The story was incredibly adventurous and full of imagination. The narration was very exciting and clear. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book because all the characters were unique and extremely well characterised by the narrator.

What other book might you compare The Ultimate Christmas Present to and why?

Quite similar to Narnia since although this is a really good Christmas story it has an underlying moral of good versus evil plus a battle with a difference.

Have you listened to any of Christy Williamsons other performances before? How does this one compare?

No but what an excellent narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes at the beginning Neal the young boy gives away his most treasured Christmas present to his orphaned friend who had not been so lucky.

A must-have Christmas audio book for all ages to enjoy. Look forward to seeing this on the big screen and listening to this audio book again nearer to Christmas.

An Amazing Christmas Adventure For All The Family

What did you love best about The Ultimate Christmas Present?

All the different and unique characters.A splendid fantasy story where good defeats evil.This book shows the power of the true spirit of Christmas based on the act of charity from one young boy.

What other book might you compare The Ultimate Christmas Present to and why?

Hard to compare because this book is so unique but I suppose Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol because the Christmas message of charity to all fellow humans is very evident in both these tremendous Christmas stories.

Which character as performed by Christy Williamson was your favorite?

Christy Williamson's performance throughout the book was excellent and engaging. Hard to choose but I would say King Misery as she made him sound so scary and evil which he was.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Personally yes but if playing this book to a young child I would play 1 chapter at a time during the build up to Christmas.

I highly recommend this book to listeners of all ages.A great and memorable listen.

Dragons + Humans = Awesome Story!

Note: Even though this is Book 2 in the series, it works as a stand alone. However, if you want to give Book 1 a try, the audiobook version is free on the authors website.

The Healer Theresa has returned to the kingdom after studying for a decade in the far east. She renews her friendships with Farloft the dragon and the Wizard Laval. She also gets to know James as he continues to make strides in his learning how to be a dragon. Meanwhile, Theresas niece visits. She catches the eye of both the Prince and James. Laval appears distracted and secretive and Theresa tries her best to pry out of him what is the matter. Pretty soon, the Zonguldak Ruby is casting its evil spell upon everyone.

This was a fun installment in this jaded and interesting dragon series. On the surface, these books look like childrens books. But once you start digging in to them, you see that the characters have real, human issues. Or dragon issues. Farloft is ancient, full of wisdom, and rather arrogant with his know-it-all ways. Laval is harboring a deep hurt (from Book 1) and prone to vengeance. His pain could damage more than just his target.

Then we have Theresa and her niece who are doing their best to try to reconcile these two old friends (Farloft and Laval) while not ticking off the Prince. Plus they have their own lives healing, house chores, the nieces art. Snyders writing is so concise that she can fit a lot into a book that isnt even 2 hours long.

So its obvious that the author made the decision to write herself into the book as a pretty important character. Usually, I find it kind of awkward and clunky when an author chooses to do this. However, in this book it was seamless. I really didnt notice it at first and about 10 minutes in, it finally clicked that our Healer was a version of the author herself.

In Book 1, we learned a bit about the issue between Laval and Farloft, and also how the rift between them deepened. In this book, we get the back story. For then ending, we have a very satisfying resolution to this issue. My time listening to this book was well spent time indeed!

Narration: Mary Sibulsky was a good choice for this book as it was told from Theresa the Healers point of view.

We Love Bear!!!!

I was looking for new books for my son when I came across this book for preorder. My 5 yr old looked over my shoulder and exclaimed "When can we get it mom?!?!" Notice he didn't ask IF we could get it! My son knows I love Bear just as much as he does so it was never a question of "CAN we get it", he knew better.

The newest Bear book is once again the perfect combination of great writing and awesome illustrations. Karma Wilson always has a wonderful melody and tempo to her writing with stories that are perfect for young children just grasping their social and emotional development. My children love that they can sometimes predict what will happen next in the story and sometimes they dance on the end of their seat waiting to see what will happen on the next page. The illustrations by Jane Chapman bring the story to life and give us characters that we love to look at over and over again. My son describes it best... "I just want to love and snuggle Bear all day long".

This particular story was special to my youngest as he has not yet lost a tooth but is eagerly waiting. I thought the subject was handled beautifully since the wonder and fear quickly turned into "what can we do" and excitement.

If Jane Chapman and Karma Wilson continue to work together, I will continue to purchase these books. They just make you feel happy!

Love these books!

The Bear Books are a great read. My son requests one to be read to him every night. This book is easy to grasp for a first time reader as well.

Bear is back....and awesome as usual!

We've been waiting for another bear book! And perfect timing with our first born recently loosing his tooth. He's grown up reading bear books and loves all bear's friends-rabbit, mouse, wren, raven, badger. Karma Wilson is the best author....this book falls in line with the others in style and pattern. After reading it a couple time, your kids with chime in "bear's loose tooth" just as they did reading bear snores on..."and the bear snores on." After reading this book the first time, we went and made it a bear night and read them all. Such great family time laughing as we all enjoy our favorite forest friend! Welcome back bear...now come back again soon please!

My family LOVES the Bear books! When my youngest daughter had her first loose tooth she was scared so I quickly ordered this book. It was (and is) a hit! She felt comforted by the story of Bear losing his first tooth and when hers finally fell out she wasn't so upset.

Definitely a Keeper

A darling tale of a sweetheart of a dragon who would never do anything any harm. But dragons have reputations and his is about to do him in when St. George the dragon slaying knight appears on the scene. How the Boy (he doesn't need a name) solves the predicament is forthright simplicity itself. Children will hold their breath until he's safe at last. Everyone will love the nature of the dragon, the heart of the boy, and the good will of the knight. Grahame knew how to write it and Hauge knew how to draw it. You will adore the dragon the moment you see him if not before. Though there are many pictures, they are so good you wish there were more. A really nice bedtime story that will make for sweet dreams.

Pair it with that old musical "PETE'S DRAGON". And "Puff the Magic Dragon". Oldies but goodies.

This is the real thing

We started with Inga Moore's beautifully illustrated version of The Reluctant Dragon, discovered at the library, but it turned out to be abridged (which does have its advantages for younger readers.) This is the real thing, with the full original text. Kenneth Grahame's witty prose is amusingly penetrating. I had to walk my then 5yo son through it the first time, but he has taken it off and read it by himself many times since. Since he read at a 5th grade level at age 5, he was able to manage many of the nuances for himself after reading it with me once, and it will grow with him as he matures and becomes better able to decipher the intent behind Kenneth Grahame's story.

Meanwhile, I love it myself! It is charming and hilarious, with a satisfyingly happy ending for all (even the badger). Michael Hague's idea of the dragon is not what I would have pictured, making me think of Bilbo and Smaug for some reason, but the rich detail--especially in one of the first full-page illustrations where the boy is reading on his bed--is stunningly gorgeous and makes me want to pore over the book again and again. In addition, though a paperback, the pages are glossy and sturdy and are holding up well.

Definitely recommend this one.

Great fun for Grahame fans

Highly recommended for readers who still appreciate Grahame's writing style. If you can't bear reading Wind in the Willows except in condensed versions, you might not enjoy the fun in this, but it's short & worth your trying. Heroes! Fire-breathing Dragon! Devious doings!

Buyer beware!

This particular print of this book is ridiculous. The cover art is pixelated and looks like it was printed on a home computer. I should have brought the 75th anniversary edition.

Wanna race?!

Our train-loving, 5-year-old grandson made me read this twice the first time he heard it! Red race car challenges freight train to a cross-country race. Throughout the journey, which stretches from Sacramento to Chicago, the little race car must deal with all sorts of obstacles that are nonexistent for the freight train. We learn about all the different kinds of cars that a freight train pulls and what might be on each one. And when freight train ultimately wins and race car challenges him to another race back, the train makes the little car an offer he can't refuse: a lift back instead! Written in typical McMullan question-and-exclamatory-answer style and full of fun-to-make sound effects, this book is sure to please any little one who's up for an adventure.

Fast, Dirty and Stinky!

The McMullans are great picture book illustrators and wonderful wordsmiths and story tellers! I bought I'm Fast! and I'm Dirty!, because my 4 year old grand-nephew loved I Stink! They were instant winners. They are a delight to read and to hear. They are also very informative, and they lead to meaningful conversations, without being preach-y. The males in my sister's family have always loved car racing, especially sports cars -- this books has no intentions to rain on that parade. What it does do is give a young person who loves the Thomas train stories an introduction into fast, dirty, stinky 21 Century USA reality.
