"Reality" Check

Though not producing for me any new and wondrous findings, Dean Radin's latest book is confirming and comforting. There have been many other books reporting the findings of Psi studies (distant viewing, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, precognition). Dean puts his review of his own and other's more recent experiments and meta-analyses, into an interesting context. He goes back to the "ancient" Indian wisdom (very broadly, under the term "yoga") and uses this as a frame for his review. His implication is clear - there is much experience, sense and wisdom in the way peoples 500-1000 years ago experienced and explained the surprising things that happened in their environments that have been pushed aside by the subsequent scientific and technical advances and explanations. He also brings into his writing the comments of many of the most serious and respected scientists of our current times that give support to the existence of psi phenomena.

The experimental findings Dean references do not provide new, earth-shattering evidence of psi effects, at least as they are found in studies with individuals. With a few anecdotal exceptions, the findings suggest statistically significant but very small psi effects. And, somewhat disturbing to a person trained in statistical analysis, the significance of these findings come about largely from the very large sample sizes that arise in the meta-analyses. This re-awakens my deep unease with our popular, much used and rarely questioned statistical conventions (e.g. the "normal" curve, effect size and power calculations).

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Seduction of Religion

I must admit though that this book is not for everyone. Those who are adamant that their faith is absolute and afraid to listen to clear logic will find this book a work of pure heresy. Those who have too much vested financially and/or emotionally in their religious believes will not like reading this book either. However, if you are curious about religions and human nature, this book is worth a read.

The author gave a simple premise in the beginning, then proceeded to introduce mainstream religions in the world with plenty of examples. It's clear from reading this book that the author experienced some sort of life experience, which prompted him to critically think about mainstream organized religions. I say this because people who grew up with certain religion tend to stay with that religion. There is usually no reason to question unless he/she came upon some special events. The author then concluded with yet more examples of inconsistencies of various organized religions.

I am not well versed in any religions, but have attempted to read the Christian bible a few times. I've always had troubles with the inconsistencies, which makes it hard to understand.

In Genesis, lights to rule the day and night and stars weren't created until after the fourth day. So how could Genesis begins with let there be light on the first day?

The other question that is impossible to answer: if one religion is true and absolute, then everything else must be wrong. How can this be?

Would you stand by your faith and defend your beliefs at all costs? If you answered yes to this, then this book is probably not for you. The Seduction of Religion: An Illuminating and Provocative Guide to the Religions of the World is a very informative and thought-provoking book by Paul Singh. The focus of this book is on the fundamental beliefs different religions around the world and the role of the Church, organized religion and superstition. This book is non-fiction and each chapter is followed by a list of references for the reader to continue their research.

Overall, I would rate this book as 3 out of 4. The reason why I would not give this book a 4 is due to regular grammatical errors throughout. For example, writing God as god or referring to Him as him.

I see a bunch of low-level reviews of this book and it makes me scratch my head and ask, "why?"

For what it is, this book is friggin AWESOME. I would suppose that some might misinterpret Seth's work as being written from a fantasy standpoint, but I can assure you that it's NOT. It's true that some of the methodology and descriptions of "spells" and/or magickal effects DO sound like they came out of the pages of a table-top RPG, but I've personally tested the VALIDITY of a good number of them and they're spot-on. I LOVE that none of the pages are numbered; I think this is the first time I've seen anything like that. His logic behind it, is so that the tome itself might be used as a tool for Bibliomancy, and well, gee-willikers, it WORKS.

I might also say that I'm the proud owner of all of the individual books that this OMNIBUS version is composed of, and I highly recommend those, too, if you can still find them.

Keep up the killer work, Mr. Cordorra. I will be keeping an eye out for your next publication.

If you get nothing out of this book, then you're not using it correctly.

Many Ideas

This book (three actually) is chock full of great ideas. But I give it four stars because the ideas that are made known to the reader are not thoroughly explained, and possibly explored. Aside from the numberless pages and the disorganized format of the book, both of which are intentional, it is a great book for many unorthodox ideas to be had and experimented with. I also found quite a few errors in spelling. Again aside from errors in minute details great read.

Some Very Good Ideas

This book had a handful of very wonderful ideas. There were all sorts of thoughts for magickal tools, occult machines, energy working, etc. in this book. A great book for Chaos Magicians. A lot of stress on the individuals system. I was very pleased with some of it, especially some of the spell ideas that were included. It was also convenient to have three of Seth's book in this one work, since Seth is known for writing very short works.

This is also the reason it never got 5 stars. There is only a handful of good ideas when I KNOW that the author could have come up with more. The three books are about 65 pages a piece, including introductions and such. I wish Seth had included more. This is the reason it only gets 4 stars.

A lot of words, but not much substance.

The author wanders all over the place in this book, with most paragraphs having very little useful information in them. On one hand, it's nice to see someone else's thought processes written out and the book has a few scattered ideas that are interesting. However, it would be far more interesting and useful if the author had taken the time to flesh out just a few of those ideas rather than just jumping around from one idea to the next with little explanation or exploration. There are dozens of "spells" listed, but they are mostly the same and feature very bland and basic descriptions that anyone could come up with on their own.

Interesting

I always thought Voodoo was a dark practice because of the mystery that surrounds it. I'm actually surprised how similar my own spiritual practices and beliefs are to this religion. For a curiosity seeker like myself, this book's perfect. For someone actually wanting enough information to practice, there's probably a more in-depth guide out there.
