Tall, Dark, Dead & Poorly Edited

This book has inspired me to write my first review. I have listened to 100s of book on audible and frequently let the reviews guide my purchase but have never been moved to review a book before. I bought this book because the storyline seemed like fun and the narrator, Ms. Ronconi, is my favorite narrator. She does an excellent job, as usual, giving each character their own unique voice. The story itself was sweet, funny, romantic and entertained me from start to finish. It reminded me very much of Molly Harper's novels, also narrated by Ms. Ronconi. At this point I will try to explain why this book only received a 2 star rating. The editing was awful. The first hour or two was seamless but after that everything went south. Phrases were overlapped on top of each other, spacing between words would lag way, way too long. Everything would be fine for a minute or two and then the issues would start again. I was able to decipher the sentence structure but it was unbelievably frustrating and very distracting. The errors were so noticeable that I believe nobody gave the final product even a cursory listen. If I were the author I would be very disappointed and embarrassed that this was the final result.

I have to admit though I enjoyed the story and narration enough that I plan on downloading at least the next book in the series.

I would recommend the authur and the story, but not the audible version. There are an overwhelming number of instances of POOR editing. So many that it distracts from the overall experience of this book. But I do enjoy Amanda Ronconi and look for books she has narrated. .

Book has glitches

I enjoyed the book and the narration was great. The only problem was that in several places throughout the book there were technical glitches where words overlapped or were just garbled completely.

I will continue with the series. Hopefully the next books won't have issues.

Audio editing is a joke

This editing is the WORST I've experienced on Audible. It is horrible! Don't you guys have quality requirements? It made it ecyremely annoying to listen to and hard to follow at times. I can't recommend this title. The editing drstroyed tjis book. The only thing that made me finish was that I like Amanda Ronconi as a narrator.

Even Amanda couldn't save this much

Amanda Ronconi is a fantastic narrator. She brings each book she reads literally to life. If it wasn't for her, I'd have tossed this away within the first couple of chapters.

The book had some flashes of brilliance, some fleeting moments of entertainment, overall I couldn't wait for it to finish. Finish it I did, I wanted to finish the story, there was some curiosity about how it would progress, so I guess it was a sale price well spent for the few hours it occupied my mind.

good shit

good narration, lovely story. nice quality in the production. i recomend this over the other version

Terrible quality production

This is yet another totally brilliant series by Robin Hobb, building perfectly on the previous Liveship Traders and Assassin series.

But the audio editors left MANY instances of repeated lines often with the narrator giving a sigh of frustration before starting the line again.

The first time gave me a giggle, but it happens repeatedly throughout the book as though the editing job was rushed. By the end I felt truly annoyed. I've not had an audio book from here with so many issues like this.

I hope it will be re-edited. Robin Hobb books so rock and Nick is a fair narrator.

Loose yourself in this amazing story!

I have not lost myself so deeply in a story since I was a child. Robin Hobbs intricately woven story of Fitzchivalry Farseer and the Fool Fate was so heart achingly , beautifully written, that i found myself going to bed early to get 4 or 5 hours listening before resigning to sleep. I have fallen so in love with the characters of Fitz and the Fool, their trails throught quests and deepening of the relationship is incredibly moving and poigniant. I have cried more with this book than any other i can remember, and am kind of dazed now I'm at the end. I am in awe of Robin Hobbs writing. It may sound over dramatic and sentimental, but this book has changed me. I heartily recommend the journey!

wonderful books

this was the first series that I ever started on audible and it is stll one of the best. love every book . the performance by Dina pearlman as always great. keep the Samantha story's coming plz

Okay

This book was pretty good. My biggest complaint is that it's short. It was good to see one of the characters finally get his comeuppance. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Not my favorite one

Love the series, but struggled finishing this one... Haven't given up on the series though.

A paranormal crossed with a English cozy

Author seems to have been inspired by Agatha Christie in this entry in the Samantha Moon series. Samantha is hired to investigate the death of an old rich man by his beautiful granddaughter. Sam travels to a private island owned by the family where a everyone is a suspect. As usual, Sam has a lot more going on in her private life, but she's helped along by Alison, a returning character from the previous book,who becomes her assistant. The banter between the two cracked me up and was one of the best things about this book. I hope Alison sticks around.

Getting irritating and far-fetched

By the 7th book you would think she would have learned to live with what she was now and not keep harping constantly on wanting to retain her humanity, we get it, but every book is peppered with self-deprecating remarks that are no longer humorous and to the point of being irritating. There's also a lot of repetitiveness, i.e., how weird she is, how she fakes eating, etc. She's also pretty self-absorbed.

The actual mystery was interesting, although there were some far-fetched components thrown into the story. And she should have really given her decision at the end a little more thought.

Something Different than the usual Jobs

So i'm not giving anything away, but before the book started i have assumed that its going to be the same thing as usual... She finds someone who is hurting someone, she plans to kill that bad guy, she fales the first time, she heals, then she tries again and kills the bad guy... But noooo ... not in this one.. you have a different place, different plot than usual..

You don't get the usual, and you keep on thinking you know what will happen, but no there are few twists in this book.. some of these twists are predictable and some are not... There are few funny moments here and there, specially in the first few chapters.

Narrator is doing a good job as usual.

I don''t want to give anything away, but lets just say, i would rank this in the top from this series, specially with the change we got from the usual thing... its not completely different than the usual but its new and reminds me of few movies i watched before

Great job here.

Ho Hum ver 8

For an accomplished Assassin there seem only to be memories and accounts of botched jobs barley pulled out of the fire by a combination of luck, circumstance and miracle. And the pattern continues.

There is a good amount of well established and well developed characters; a great little world full of variation and colour but it seems that this Authors train is just running back and forth on the same rail with little or no real variation and a lot of incidental repetition.

If you have read book 1 through 7 than you will know what I mean; if not do start at book one as the read is great and only starts being very predictable around book 4 or 5.

GIN, like the liquor....

Love this series, love the storyline how it picks right up from the last book. The narrator Lauren Fortgang rock this, her slow southern drawl is perfect.

Hope for another book soon...

4.5 stars. Definitely the best in the series in my opinion.

This book was 90% plot and action, low romance. While I love the romance, this story was well done.

I would have given 5 stars all around but it still bothers me that they switched narrators for this series again. the original (Paul Boehmer) was just so good that the other two narrators paled in comparison.

Good performance classic Dragonlance

Would you consider the audio edition of The Second Generation to be better than the print version?

The performing of the stories is quite good. Ms Zackman is certainly a pro who know what she is about. Listening to audiobooks and reading a book are two such different things that I cannot compare them. In my opinion, they are two different ways to enjoy the same medium.

What does Gabra Zackman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

It's interesting the way she portrays some of the characters: she gives them voices that fit. I like the way she goes from "narration" mode in descriptions and introductions to "interpretation" mode in dialogues and stream of consciousness.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It got me interested, which is the main objective of an audiobook.

Any additional comments?

In the metatags, I'd add "Dragonlance" to the titles of the book, which in fact is following "Dragons of Spring Dawning" and just before "Dragons of Summer Flame". I'd insert it between those two.

narrator was awesome. the stories were ok. nothing spectacular since the books are all just intros for the new characters.

Not exactly what I expected

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I expect a good story from Mercedes and I was not disappointed. You come to expect certain things from fairy-tales, What I did not expect was how I burst out laughing when the unicorns came. The reaction to them and someone being "outed" by them was something I hadn't considered. The performance and story still makes me smile a week later. I simply must have the next book in the series.

Addictive Series comparable to Once Upon a Time

If you've seen the new TV show Once Upon a Time with all the most well know old fables and stories, and you liked that you will love how Gabra Zackman brings this series to life. Mercedes writes a good story but most of her books are read by terrible narrators (I found that out trying to listen to a couple others and then reading all the reviews). Not to worry in this series, because you have Gabra Zackman. After this series I fell in love with Gabra's reading style and went so far as to follow her on Facebook, as well as look up other stories she has read. Most of my favorite audible books now are read by Gabra. Luckily she is a prolific reader and audible has dozens of pages of books read by her. I just feel bad that Mercedes Lackey choose not to user her for any of her other series. I wish Audible would go back through some of Mercedes books with bad reviews (MOST ARE ALL attributed to narrator boredom.. read the comments) and have her redo the books. Other great narrators (IMO) are Martha Harmon Pardee, Barbra Rosenblat (she made me read 18 books of the Amelia Peabody series.. the most addicted I've ever been to audible!), Becca Battoe (I have friends who disliked her in 50 shades but I ended up really seeing the world through her eyes easily, unfortunately the other books she narrates are mostly for kids, ugh!).

GREAT SERIES, a must listen for anyone (mostly women) who love comedy, mystery, magic, fantasy, love, and tales that remind of you of Cinderella, lost princesses and knights in shining armor.

Second only to Blue Sword

The prequel to Blue Sword, it matters not which book you read first. The story is fabulous, and the readers of both books do a wonderful job. I had been requesting these books from Audible for years as they were only available from the publisher at about $80 or so. I finally broke down and purchased Blue Sword a couple of years ago, and was about to buy this book too when Audible released it! Thanks a million! These two books can be listened to again and again.

hello old friend

the hero and the crown is an old favorite of mine from my child hood, along with redwall and a wrinkle in time. i was over joyed to find it in this digital form and even happier that it was the same recording i'd grown up with. on the whole Robin Mckinley is a hit or miss writer her books are ether really good or just ma, hero and the crown and it's sequel blue sward are definitely hits and examples of some of her best work

This is one of my favorite fantasy stories!

Strong female protagonist. Decent world-building. Exciting plot. Some romance. It is well worth listening to!

good reading...dull story

The reading was fine and it's not very long. But, as a story it was just boring to me and a lot of the plot developments felt like they came out of nowhere

Love this story. Not a fan of the narrator .

Loved this story for years. Just listened to it for the first time and had a hard time staying with it. The narrator's voice kept pulling me out of the story, She didn't sound like a young woman. The protagonist starts out at 18, goes to about 15 then up to 20. There's a creaky quality to the performers voice that his r wasn't suited for this story.

An excellent start to a new series

An excellent start to a new series and a captivating & emotionally gripping story by Mercedes Lackey.

The narrator does an commendable job, each character seems to come alive as a separate entity. I don't think the sample is as good a choice as it could have been to show off the narrator.

The 500 Kingdoms are inhabited by a manner of good and evil magical beings, beasts and humans, from the Fae, Brownies and Unicorns to Giants, Dragons, and Evil Witches, Mages and Sorceresses and their minions

The 500 Kingdoms are imbued with magic and the powerful force of tradition which tries to bend its peoples Magical or otherwise to its will for good or bad.

Tradition intended Elena to be a Cinderella, except that her would be prince was only eleven when she turned twenty-one, so her evil stepmother abandons her and decides to try her fortune hunting in other lands.

Elena, penniless and alone decides to become a paid servant, but her Fairy Godmother decides to take her on as an apprentice.

The magical potential that has built up in her through the unfulfilled tradition gives her huge magical powers. Thus Elena's tale and trials begin, but at least now she has a home and people that care for her and last but not least a purpose . . .

Warning whilst most of this book is G rated in small sections mainly near the end of the book it ups the eroticism for a bit but its not over done in my opinion but it may upset some readers.

There is a nice tone of humor throughout and It has great multilayered characters that grow as the story progresses.

This is an Fantasy adventure story with a side of romance and Elena is a remarkably strong female lead that has a vulnerable human side.

A Self Image Cast in Stone Could Shatter

SOMETIMES I'M SO CLEVER I DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND MYSELF.

This book starts out sounding like a teen book, but it is not. Though details are not usually given there is gang rape and murder. I am one generation too old to have played D&D, but my kids did and I do believe I would have enjoyed it. I believe gamers will like this book better then those who are not gamers.

I found I had to but my common sense on the shelf. In the same way that Burroughs gets Carter to Mars, similarly JR gets this group to this fantasy world. I did not really like the characters in this, most of them seemed to be selfish and rude to each other. I found it hard to believe that a group of kids this rude to each other would continue to meet on a regular basis and spend time with each other. The rudeness and selfishness got worse as they became there characters, but that was probably on purpose to show the thinking of medieval people.

I thought I was going to give up on this book several times, but when it would get to the end of the chapter I found I wanted to know what was going to happen next. These kids go on a quest and nothing goes easy for them. The author does not cope out, by giving them special powers that work wonderfully helping them escape at the last minute. Most of the time there inability to work their magic properly gets them in deeper.

I don't know how to advise you on this book. Some of you are going to love it and some are going to hate it. I give the story three stars and I am not going to listen to the rest in the series.

I first read this book as a kid and I loved the idea of it being based on kids playing a D&D like game and getting transported into it.

What other book might you compare The Sleeping Dragon to and why?

Dream Park by Larry Niven. It is another great example of people playing a role-playing game in real life.

Be prepared to be put through the emotional ringer

Jennifer Estep definitely has a knack for creating characters; from her phenomenal heroine, to her lovable sidekicks, to her downright devious villains, I cant help but be impressed every time I step into her world. That and I simply can not put her books down! Widows Web was no different except for the fact that I was mildly scared to turn the pages; not because I was worried that I wouldnt enjoy the story but because I feared for Gin and Owens relationship. Thats how involved I am in this series. Their struggles actually take an emotional toll on me. If thats not the definition of a great author then I dont know what is!

I find myself oddly fascinated by Esteps antagonists; even if some of them are only present for one book, the amount of detail and thought that goes into them is simply remarkable. On the surface, Salina Dubois appears to be merely an ex-girlfriend trying to rekindle an old flame. However, as the story progresses it becomes obvious that theres so much more to her than meets the eye. By the end I was in awe of her cruelty and cunningness; she definitely gives Gin a run for her money (in more ways than one)! I loved the way that Estep gradually widened this characters scope until the big picture was revealed. Practically every chapter ends on a cliffhanger which had me constantly saying Ill just read one more and you all know how that goes. Now Im stuck waiting until March for Deadly Sting. Ooh, the pain!

Theres trouble in paradise between Gin and Owen which honestly, was to be expected. Had their relationship bliss gone on for too many books I would have been disappointed. Yes I love them to death and yes I want them to get their happily ever after but they havent been tested nearly enough yet for them to have reached that point. This is Urban Fantasy people, theres no such thing as easy! Graysons attitude was tiresome but understandable; love is blind and this book does a great job of illustrating that. I was impressed with Gins level of maturity and patience given the situation, in her shoes I would have turned into a jealous, sniveling mess. I think that Owen will eventually come to his senses and Im more than willing to wait for that day; I just hope that he doesnt take too long because he might end up being too little too late.

Finn really proved himself to me in this installment. For the past several books hes been taking on a more active role in the assassin business and he really brought his A-game this time around.
