It could have been better

It was a nice end to a too long tale. Everything is nearly wrapped up .,... Mostly. I wish this series had been more condensed for a richer flavor.

Emo Mags finally grows a backbone.

I adore the Valdemar world and most of Mercedes Lackey's books in general which is one of the only reasons I stuck with this series. The other is Nick Podehl, his narration made the characters live. In fact it may have been his voice as much as the authors words that made me want to shove a steel rod down the main characters spine. Every time Mags's inner voice would escalate emotionally out of control I would cringe. Not many narrators can do that to me.

This 5th book finally answers many questions and is the best one since the 1st book. It is obvious there will be more in the series but it could end here. This series has been the weakest of all Mercedes Valdemar stories for me. Maybe now that is has taken Mags 5 books to stop his emo whine the series will improve.

Finally get closure for poor Mag's. Can't give it away. Spoilers. Great endings and Beginning.

A wonderful addition to the saga of Mags

Bastion was a wonderful reminder of why Misty is my favorite author.

As much as I enjoy resuming adventures with beloved characters, she does an excellent job of introducing new and interesting parties and developing them well enough to leave the reader looking forward to seeing them again as well.

The plot itself is not particularly surprising, but each scene is told with such attention to detail and emotion that even a simple night sheltering at a way station is immersive.

As the story neared it's conclusion I worried that it might be left feeling unfinished awaiting the next volume (which is not yet released), however Misty does an excellent job of wrapping up events in a way that leaves the reader feeling satisfied yet wondering what adventures are yet to come.

Last, but certainly not least, Nick Podehl is an astounding narrator who gives characters such distinct voices that it almost feels as if the listener is watching a play by a troup of actors.

Still Good, Even with the Narrator Change

I've noticed that even the best narrators receive less than complimentary reviews when they take over narration in the middle of a series, and trying to follow up Cynthia Holloway is even more of a challenge. (Check out the negative reviews of the replacement narrators for the Chicagoland Vampire series or the Morganville Vampire series if you're curious) For loyal fans of this audiobook series it will probably be hard to adjust, especially since the stories are written in first-person. Allyson Ryan does a better than average job, although I found the way she kept pronouncing "stalactite" like 'stale-LICK-tite' bizarre and distracting.

Karen Chance's writing is superb and I really enjoyed this story. It seems that every book has explored a new aspect and/or faction of the supernatural world she has created. She's focused vampires, mages, ghosts, seers, mythological deities, and now demons. This, along with an awesome cast of secondary characters makes for an always entertaining read (or listen).

It's definitely not my favorite book of the series, but I don't know how much of that is due to the narrator switch. I don't think I can be impartial, since Holloway has always been one of my favorite narrators. Tempt the Stars is definitely worth a credit and I already eagerly anticipating Chance's next release.

Got thrown a loop

I love the series so having all the books helped me keep this one. I did not like the narrator. She did not, not, not, sound right. Also, where was Mircea??? Love Pritkin but we have to solve the thing with Mircea first...

I would not try another book read by Allyson Ryan. I might try a book (but book only, not an audiobook) written by Karen Chance.

No, I consider this book to be a one-off within its own series and the broader genre.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I blame my revulsion to continue beyond chapter 10 on the narration rather than the story. The characters' voices are lame. The intonation is just wrong. I cannot continue listening, even though I really want to find out what happens between Cassie and the war mage.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Tempt the Stars?

I think all the mindless action scenes are unnecessary and unbelievable.

The Mystery comes to a close

After losing her father and becoming a vampire, this story has a slow start with Beatrice adjusting to her new existence. It does get better though, when Gio gets a summons to go to Rome. All heck breaks loose when Lorenzo makes another appearance and the ultimate evil step mother joins the story. Gio and Beatrice's love story grows stronger and stronger, as all the allies from previous books and some new ones join forces to put an end to mystery of the secret formula, that could kill them all.

Fun series, interesting twists,but...

The main character is bright, well developed, and holds her own throughout. I really enjoyed her intelligence, cleverness, and strength. Premise and characters are the most important things in any series, so I recommend this one to those who enjoy a little history in their paranormal romance adventures. I enjoyed this series very much for what it is, but there are some annoyances with the writing and audio performance though the story is good enough that it managed to pull me in.

My problem with the writing was the author's need for a thesaurus so that, for example, a word like "face" doesn't show up a half dozen times in a single descriptive paragraph (ironic, when your lead character is a librarian, no?)

My biggest issue was the narrator's mispronunciations! These were, at least, consistent so once I got done seething over a newly mangled term I had to go back to listening, because in spite of everything, I really wanted to know what happened next! Steppes are not steppies, signor does not have a hard g, and the name of that wonderful Scotch, Laphroaig, does not sound like L'Afro-Igg. As long as you can grit your teeth and glaze over this type of issue (these 3 terms were the biggest offenders for me)

If you enjoy Patricia Briggs or Ilona Andrews I can say that Elizabeth Hunter deserves a look, we readers can always hope that the editing gets tighter in future works.

A strange and similar world

For a long time I've been hoping to find a good piece of scholarship dealing with the peoples of the ice age, specifically the people who painted the caves in France and modern-day Europe. I know that there isn't all that much to go on, however, I assumed there would be at least a few people in this field of archaeology, anthropology, and sociology who could at least offer some solid, historical, factual knowledge on what these people were like, how they lived and survived, what they might have possibly believed.

Sadly, I never really found a work of non-fiction that I felt was suitable - either because the time period was too recent (Mesopotamia and the fertile crescent peoples) or the books were new-age, wack-a-doo nonsense with pictures of burning crystals superimposed over photographs of cave paintings.

About ten years ago I picked up a book called Red Mars because someone recommended it to me and I wasn't even 50 pages into it before I went back to the bookstore to buy the sequels Green Mars and Blue Mars. In those books Kim Stanley Robinson embarked on a grand thought experiment concerning colonizing the red planet. His book wasn't filled with any aliens (though the people living on Mars grew quite distant from the people left on poor Earth), and neither was his book filled with any unnecessary action or typically 'science fiction' plot points. The books were clearly written in his simple yet intelligent voice and they dealt simply with people and how they interacted with each other. In fact at times you almost forgot they were even on Mars.

And that was the real key: Robinson is able to draw you into his worlds slowly, carefully, and hardly without you even noticing.

This book is another grand thought experiment, but instead of an alien planet he writes about our own alien planet tens of thousands of years ago when we even lives side by side with our evolutionary ancestors, the Neanderthals. But the book is never strange, it's always about people, a boy named Loon being trained to be a Shaman, and most importantly it's about survival. This is a world where people have to stick together to stay alive but could very well take place even today in the wilds of Siberia, or remotest Canada, or Patagonia because aside from their perspective on how the universe works, they are no different than we are. They love, they fight, they create art, and they die.

In a way Robinson takes away a lot of the romantic mystery of what living during the ice age would be because it really isn't that different from how many people live today.

Good story, great author, great voice actress

I missed really missed that line Gin says about someone "needed to get dead in a hurry". I don't recall that in this book. But it always makes me laugh in the other ones. The voice actress has the perfect accent for the characters in the book. I know many people who have that accent, so it is very believable. And reminds me of people I know. After seeing how choppy and strange a great audio book series becomes when the author suddenly decides to switches narrators, I'd definitely quit reading this if Lauren Fortgang wasn't reading it anymore. To date I've quit buying two series because I couldn't stand the switch.

Gin and Owen ahhhh

Im glad to see Gin opening up with her feeling for her friends and letting them know it. I was a little worried that maybe I had enough of Gin as she really was staying closed up not letting her friends in, but this story change that.. A very good listen

Lacking and redundant story telling

It was really difficult getting through this book. It's the classic Gin thinks her day is going well, something happens, she's the spider and she's badass, almost dies, survives, she's the spider she's badass, almost dies again.

I want to like the series, but for someone who's suppose to be the greatest assassin and strongest elemental she's always being overwhelmed by other elementals. She doesn't use her magic in any ways that seem even remotely useful besides draining her of all of it in a quick amount of time. Everyone she faces uses their magic so well, and apparently is stronger in it then her (Despite only having one element. Unlike her who has two different pools to draw upon). Everything has been dumbed down to physical fight scenes that are lackluster and redundant.

All hail The Spider!

Theres only a handful of series where I will literally count the days between releases and Elemental Assassin is one of them. Gin kicks this installment off in true Spider style with blood on her hands and a body to dispose of. In Heart of Venom we finally see Blancos cool, patient demeanor slip only to be replaced by an emotional, risk-taking one which is incredibly dangerous in her line of work but also an as-of-yet unexplored side of her character. Its personal this time around; you dont mess with Gin Blancos friends and expect to live.

Part of the reason why Gins been so successful in her career as a hired gun is in large part thanks to her ability to shelve her emotions while on a job. She does her homework, waits for the perfect shot and then makes her getaway.

This writer is wonderful and so funny!! Having Phil read it was magic, and I couldn't imagine it any other way. He read it with such seriousness and I can't think how someone else could pull it off. Just don't read it in public or while running. The first will get you really weird looks, the latter will make it hard to breath through all the giggling! What a great fun book! I would recomend to any age, any gender. My 15 year old son loved it too!

Clever at times, always entertaining.

This is a good time-killer novel. I'm not really sure I see the satire in it. It seems it would be better to just say this is a light comedy novel that pokes a bit of fun at high fantasy worlds in general.

I do not regret reading this, as I said, it is a good time-killer, or maybe pallet cleanser.

I recommend this book to anyone that feels like reading, but doesn't want anything too serious.

Entertaining, Not Epic. Funny and Interesting.

This book is good stuff. It's a quest/finding-yourself type fantasy but it it not the long epic kind. Its is the entertaining and interesting kind. The plot was just complex enough to be interesting without that epic fantasy feel that can bog you down sometimes if you are not in the mood for it. The entire book was funny, but it was also surprisingly thought provoking. I had read the book previously and liked it so much I decided to add on the narration and give it a go. A very enjoyable listen. The narrator was great.

FOR GROVLICK SAKE

HATRED IS THE COLD FROG WITHIN YOUR BOOT.

I have to fully agree with MATTHEW, THE POLITICIAN FROM LITTLE ROCK, this is a GOOD TIME KILLER NOVEL and is CLEVER AT TIMES. It starts out extremely funny with the whole suicidal sheep gag. After that it is not as funny, but does have it's moments. It is also a quest fantasy novel or a satire of one?(also stolen from MATTHEW). I was a little confused at the beginning with the switching back and forth in time, but soon caught on. This will never be my favorite anything, but was a fun listen.

A little twee but very funny.

It's a ridiculous plot written so that it is amusing and the reader just accepts, "Sure - it's a minotaur who just, y'know, has to go through regular high school life being gigantic with horns." It's a little bit about the way narrative arcs tend to follow patterns; a little bit about personal agency; a little bit more than pretty good. It's got a bit of a pat ending, but there are worse things.

Gods and Monsters (Go Monsters!)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

At first, I would not recommend this type of audiobook to my wife. Fantasy and sci-fi was just not her thing, no matter how good I thought it was. Then she tried one by accident, and loved it. Then I recommended another, and she loved it. I can't recommend everything to her -- one wrong move and she'll probably revert to her initial stance of not liking the genre. Helen and Troy, however, will be one that heartily recommend. The humor helps -- and the good humor inherent in the writing and the reading.

What did you like best about this story?

The subject matter is not original, but the charismatic characters and cheerful tone make it stand out as unique. Others have imagined our world, as it exists in reality for us, peopled by magical or supernatural or mythological beings (cf. of course Harry Potter). Helen and Troy live in such a world, where an ordinary young woman like Helen can have familiar problems but also be a minotaur, and she can be sent on a magical quest by a god (one of many) that she meets in the burger joint where she and Troy work, and she and Troy can be recruited by an FBI-CIA-type agency to carry out that quest.

On one hand, the consistency of the world created by A. Lee Martinez makes it work, but on the other hand it's the humor and good humor that make that world and its characters so likeable -- sorry to be repetitive, but humor is one thing, something that makes you laugh, which is frequent while listening to this book, but good humor doesn't mean that the laughs are good, it means that it's all done with a jovial spirit that is irresistible. And it is.

Which character as performed by Khristine Hvam was your favorite?

Helen is another wonderfully empowered young woman, not least because she has minotaur blood, and her youthful sarcasm never bites, as performed by Khristine Hvam. But with all due respect, my favorite character was Nigel the Orc.

good second installment

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

i would recommend this book. i think it is a good second installment in this series. i will definately get the third. I feel there is a lot of potential here, and the author is just getting the ground work down. interested to see where this all goes. there is still self doubt with the lead character Kara. She doesn't yet see her own potential and value but she is definately growing. Her power is growing and taking an interesting turn. The mystery is good, the crime scences are descriptive but not as shocking as the first book, not quite as dark. the romantic/sexual tension is good. The narration is good as well. give it a try. i would say you should start with the first book because it flows better that way. you don't want to miss how Kara got where she is, however they recap enough in this book you would get the basics.

A good whodunnit with a paranormal edge

I enjoy a good whodunnit murder mystery, and that's precisely what BLOOD OF THE DEMON was, but with a paranormal edge. I'm still not entirely sure what's up with Ryan (although I do have a few guesses), and the Rhyzkahl thing was inevitable, so even though Kara's path is a tad predictable there's still a sizable chunk of unknowns to keep listeners engaged. Liv Anderson is definitely a narrator that I would recommend, especially when paired with Diana Rowland's writing style.

Love this

I want to thank Audible for getting book two in this series before I went on to book three. Previously I had purchased book one and loved it but Audible didn't have book 2 yet. They did have book 3 and I was unhappy 2 wasn't avaliable. Anyway I saw it was about to come out a few days after I listened to the first one, so a BIG thank you.

This is very interesting. I always like a story with a new idea that I haven't listened to before and this one covers it. Demon summons and police work combined is just a good but unusual combination for me. There is not much sexual content in this book, but like I've said before, a interesting book doesn't need it. I enjoy all the different types of demons and their characteristics. Kara is an interesting character and I enjoy her realtionships with her co-workers, family and the demonkind. It makes for a thirst for the next book.

Style makes up for minimal plot

I enjoyed the book, but the complexity is in the telling, not in the plot. The technologies in the story are so advanced, anything can happen; in that it's akin to fantasy. I didn't realize in the first book that the civilization (if the diverse actors can be grouped that way) is confined to the solar system; I guess brains the size of a planet still can't out think Albert E.

Jean le Flambeur Series Continues Brilliantly

Jean le Flambeur is on a mission whilst being hunted of course, this calls for deft timing and brilliant distraction all while trying to get in a Schrödinger box to borrow a powerful jewel or not. So begins The Fractal Prince, the second book the Jean le Flambeur series. (Go here for a review of the first book, The Quantum Thief. Also, read them in order.) The Oubliette is replaced with Sirr, a city on Earth ravaged by wildcode. The European steampunk culture is supplanted by an Arabian culture partially under the thumb of the Sobornost. Meanwhile, a small boy version Matjek Chen (a founder) is roving the beach. Mieli, Perhonen and Jean must figure out how much their trust has grown and how closely they keep within the Pellegrinis wishes.

I switched between the Kindle and Audible versions of The Fractal Prince. I listened to the audiobook. Because its dense material, I dont recommend that be your only way of taking in the content, despite it being an excellent recording. Scott Brick does his usual fabulous job narrating. As I've noted before, Mr. Brick is in my pantheon of favorite narrators. His pacing, emphasis, and enunciation are nearly flawless, which is a particularly challenging feat since its loaded with technical material and new terms. Alas, while he narrated The Quantum Thief, he does not narrate A Causal Angel

Complex and rewarding

I found myself having to read parts of the book multiple times to keep things straight in my head. However, the story is rewarding and worth it.

I'm sure it worked in the author's mind, but not in mine.

Rajanieni's first book was really excellent. Rich storytelling with beautiful language and outstanding tech, great characters and situations, and subtle humor. I found this one was just literary masterbation that continually lost my attention every few minutes. Lots of big, imaginative words sprayed in a mechanized litany that felt like words crafted for complex alliteration rather than serving a story.

Start of a fantastic journey

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

There is not enough praise to give for this series. Beginning with this book you are inserted into Atticus life beeing turned upside down. from the first page you get sucked in and you wont regret it. In addition to the great stories in this book and the rest of the series you chuckle and laugh of Atticus and his dog Oberan wich he have learned to mindspeech with him. Oberan is a king of fun and mischeif his terories and thought about life and whats important just makes my day any day. Let there be sausage! You will soon know the understanding of the expression. And with doing so you will never regret it.

Comparing the books in this series is not nessisary. They all are linked into a huge story, a fun and thrilling exating rollercoaster you never want to get of.

What does Christopher Ragland bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Christopher Ragland is the best narrator of this series. Luke daniels do a good job later on but still it all comes down to the voice of Oberon. He just rocks it.

Cant sleep dont have time to eat. etc. yep!

What to say here. It is fun exiting,sometimes a bit sad, enjoyable, easy to listen to and in all Kevin Hearne's story you get fed by some amazing talent of decribing things, his knowlegde. man that man must use isane amount of research time to collect all the information you get in these books. Book 1 as this is is a start on a epic journey in vbery many ways. Fantastic!
