Distinctly Different

Where does Unforgotten rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Jessica Brody has created a futuristic world in which the characters struggle with the morality of how technology and science should be used to influence humans and control humans. Her writing is focused, rich with detail, and the story line ranks this book as one of the best books I have listened to with regard to a beautiful blend of engaging plot and characters that made me laugh, made me hate them, and made me ponder what I would do in similar situations.

What did you like best about this story?

I thoroughly enjoyed the setting of this story. The main characters move through time and space and while the science is not overly complicated the focus on how this technology is used by the worst humanity has to offer is what makes this story compelling. The author does ask us to suspend disbelief but her ability to build such realistic characters emotionally is her greatest strength. Brody's ability to use words to exquisitely describe emotions, physical places, and the connection between characters reminds me a great deal of Lauren Oliver and Alexandra Bracken's writing. I adore the twists and turns the fast placed plot threw my way. I am in for the 3rd and last book.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Julia Whelan, as always, is perfect in her delivery, her tone, and her inflection. Successful narrators alter their cadence, their emphasis, and their emotion so that each character slowly comes to life. However she does it, Whelan continues to be my favorite narrator. She does not disappoint and is truly a talented story teller.

I Will Always Find You

I thought this book was actually better and more action packed than the first in the series.

I really love this series, have to put it up there with some of my favorites like Partials, Until the End of the World, Pandemonium and The Red Rising series.

Sera and Zen are living their life in 1609 like they hoped to but it's not long before Zen comes down with an unknown disease, Sera's natural abilities are displayed and she is charged as a Witch for her unusual "powers".

Without wanting to give too much away, she is taken back to 2032 by a Diotech agent Kaelin, much like herself. She agrees to help him if he'll bring Zen back also.

Sneaky Science

If you expected just another Diskworld novel, you've come to the wrong place.

The actual story is slim and the Diskworld bits are short.

If you can see past that, you get treated to simple to understand science facts, read so that you will have no problems following along.

be ready to go... huh... so that's what happen...

well Tincker is a walking, talking force of nature... that that is a genius... if not a physically imposing one... this time the book is set up a duet Tincker's point of view along her husband's pov. This time Tincker is going a bit nuts... and not in a good way, with dreams warning her about different threats and nightmares from previous book... well there no rest for the mad genius. One thing I liked in peculiar that I liked in specific on this book is how Tincker matures and becomes more aware of surrounding and her actions... some heads were lost, but you know eggs and omelets...

Science and Magic, Oh My! Continues!

On December 21 I noted in a post that Wen Spencers Elfhome series was out on Audible. Being a rabid lover of all things Spencer, and of Audio Books in general, I was thrilled.

Over the last few days I have listened to both Tinker and Wolf Who Rules and am more than happy to say that they didnt disappoint At. All. If you read my original review of Tinker back in July of 2013 you will read how much I enjoyed the first book. The blend of technology with magic completely charmed me. Magic, in the world of Elfhome, is based upon technology. Spencer delves into the world of quantum mechanics, chaos theory, physics, and various other sciences to build a world where Tinker, the heroine of the story and a junk yard owner, blends science with magic to create magical machines, like the hover bikes that made Wolf Who Rules: Elfhome, Book 2 | [Wen Spencer]her famous in a Philadelphia ripped out of our reality and transported to Elfhome by a mistake in quantum mechanics. A mistake made by her grandfather and extrapolated out to a Chinese space platform which allows travel between worlds. Philadelphians didnt ask for their city to be transported but now that it is, a new world of trade has been opened up, and Philadelphia transports monthly between Earth and Elfhome. Sooo interesting!!!

The narration, by Tanya Eby, is beautifully done, and fits the characters well. Tinker is a Elfhome: Elfhome, Book 3 | [Wen Spencer]very mature, very brilliant, eighteen not a character I would normally identify with at her age, but being raised on another world, by a brilliant grandfather, makes her older in some ways, while being incredibly naïve in others. She is an interesting blend of emotionally childlike and intellectually mature, and it shows in all of her actions.

Wolf Who Rules is the second installment of the series, continuing the story of Tinker and her interactions with the Elves whose world Elfhome is.

Great world building and characters

The story was well written and enjoyable. I liked the main characters. The romance was sweet and only caused me to roll my eyes a few times. Overall the pros outweighed the cons. Just once though I would like a strong female to act like a woman and not a swooning idiot. "Make love to me Wind Wolf!" Ack gag cough gag vomit vomit. Just No.

An excellent fantasy, finally available on Audible

Welcome to Pittsburgh, but a Pittsburgh that spends 29 days out of every 30 on Elfhome, a world of elves and magic, but then comes Shutdown and Pittsburgh is back in the USA where there is almost no magic.

First up, meet Alexander Graham Bell, better known as Tinker, the owner of Pittsburgh Scrap and Salvage. A mere 5 feet tall, but possessed of a brilliant scientific mind and an indomitable spirit. As we approach shutdown, Wolf Who Rules (aka, Windwolf), the head of the Wind Clan and Viceroy of the elven lands where Pittsburgh lives for 29 out of 30 days, is being chased across the city by a pack of wargs. But the wargs make a fatal mistake, chasing Windwolf into Tinker's scrap yard, and that's the end of the wargs! But also very nearly the end of Windwolf, who is gravely injured in the battle.

With no magic in Pittsburg during shutdown, Windwolf is unable to heal himself. Tinker uses a magic "capacitor" that she's built and filled while Pittsburgh was on Elfhome, combined with a healing spell she prints out on her printer, and Windwolf survives the day long shutdown. And the fun is just beginning!

This wonderful series from Wen Spencer is finally available in audiobook form, with Tanya Eby as the narrator. A great series, and a good narrator. I'm glad to finally have this series on Audible, and I'm enjoying it a lot. Highly recommended.

Science and Magic, Oh My!

I have to say, when I saw this book listed, I forget where, I thought it might not be all that much, but it was at hand, so I picked it up. Oh. My. God. I could not have been more wrong, or more happy to be so.

Tinker, and the follow-up, Wolf Who Rules are extraordinary. The concept of science as the foundation of magic is one I have always wished someone would write about and Spencer does it in a believable, extremely well developed, and well written manner. I picked up the book for an easy read, and within a few pages was totally hooked.

Admittedly, I am a sucker for BOTH fantasy and science books. The multiverse and bubble universe studies, as well as the whole concept of quantum physics, fascinates me.

My children loved it!

What did you like best about Quest for the Diamond Sword? What did you like least?

This book was obviously written for children who love Minecraft. I have two boys who have now listened to it 5 times in the first two weeks we have owned it. However, the story is below average. I would have never finished it if my family wasn't on a road trip listening to books together. Parents are not going to love this book, but they won't hate it ether. It is a good book to listen to as a family.

Would you ever listen to anything by Winter Morgan again?

We have already purchased the second book in the series.

What about Luke Danielss performance did you like?

I love listening to Luke. When picking a Minecraft book for my kids I chose this one specifically because he was the reader. Like all of his work each character has a distinct voice. His performance provided life into an otherwise average book.

Do you think Quest for the Diamond Sword needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Need one? No. But there is one. My kids have listened to it twice in the past 36 hours we have owned it.

Not great lit, but ok for car ride w kids

There is nothing remarkable about this short novel except that it kept my Minecraft-obsessed nieces (8 and 12 years old) interested throughout a long car ride. We did have to stop the book frequently so that they could explain what was going on ("see, the green slimy monsters live in such-and-such, and only the whatchamajiggy can kill them"). Adults with any video game or role-playing game experience will easily understand what is going on. Kids might find this boring unless they have played Minecraft. Listen to it at 1.25 speed if you want it to end more quickly.

Newborn and Williams, the perfect team!

Otherland is one of my all time favorite series, so I knew I'd adore the audio book. I did and that was mostly due to George Newbern's superb narration style. Download the entire series and get ready for an immersive adventure you'll want to re-visit time and time again!!

The Saga Continues

This story is very well written. The character development is extensive and the story is complex. That being said, there are a lot of characters and the author gives them all the same amount of attention to detail. You feel as if you know what that character is really like.....until suddenly you don't know them because the story makes a surprise turn.

The story is multi-layered and jumps between characters and locations so this isn't a story you listen to while your attention is elsewhere. The way it jumps between the people and settings makes it very interesting but there have been times I've had to backtrack to figure out what was going on, but the book is worth it. I enjoy reading and listening to books that aren't simply linear from start to finish and this book is it. I just listened to book two again to prepare for book 3 and there were details I had missed the first time I heard it. Can't wait to start the next book-

Brilliant, As Kadrey always is

Let's put it this way: I will buy every single Sandman Slim novel in audio AND kindle that Richard Kadrey writes. Writing is excellent, the stories wonderfully imaginative, and lines so funny and/or thought provoking you actually have to stop and re-listen and ponder. Well edited and I have fallen in love with the Extremely Talented Mr. Andrews, as narrator.

Note to Mr. Kadrey - please, NEVER use a different narrator as MacLeod Andrews is perfect. Can't say perfect about too many things in this life.

Do Not End This Series!

What other compliments, accolades or glowing tributes can I bestow upon this author and the narrator? I love these books! Okay, this review is not fancy, but straight to the point.

I love the terrific writing, everything from the film and literary references to the deep and deliciously dark internal musings of Sandman Slim about the world and the universe. And the wonderful sarcastic humor!

I love the side characters, all the gods, demons, angels and especially his group of friends---all so inventive and unique.

I love the wonderful twist ending to this book.

I love, love MacLeod Andrews! Others have said it here perfectly---he IS Sandman Slim. His performance has made the character come alive.

I am so heartened to hear that there will be another book. YEAH!

A good story.. but lacks focus

First, let me say I love this series. I really appreciate the way Richard Cadrey can crete such a creepy atmosphere in his stories. He is probably one of only two authors (the other being Harry Connoly) who can truly capture the horror and madness of cthulu/outside monsters. Using the mythos has become trope and sanitized down from sanity shattering terror to mildly scary but beatable.

This book is fairly light on action. That is ok by me as the real weak point in the character is not in battle but dealing with his personal life. This book moves the meta-plot to a satisfying conclusion. He ties up most loose ends and leaves room to continue the series.

The problem, as said in the title, is the book almost completely lacks focus. It just kind of rambles along with very little direction. The series has suffered from lack of a tangible strong villian since he offed his Mason Faim. The author had a great opportunity to have a great villian in this novel but pretty much wasted it on a Hannibal Lector knock-off.

Hilarious

A wonderfully funny radio program... Imagine if you took Monty Python, Lord of the Rings, and Red Dwarf and squished it all together... Bingo, this is it... Delightful bad punning and innuendo, not to mention the superb digs at pop culture and current events... Fabulous performances throughout... Absolutely worth the credit and you're welcome...

Not what I expected

I didn't know what to expect from this dramatization. I expected fantasy set in an alternate universe as it was written. But.. the synopsis doesn't do it justice. This is very funny with a lot of tongue in cheek humor. I started listening and had to back up several times for the jokes and funny happenings. Most of this is due to the background music and sounds blocking out softer voices. The humor is adult but not graphic. There should be more about the villain and about the dog. It is omitted in the synopsis that the dog is changed into a human. But he remains the faithful canine companion. He behaves as I would expect my dog to behave if he became human. His values are that of the loyal canine who doesn't really understand why he is now human. But he goes along with it because of his master. The villain and his side kick are funny too. The supporting cast is great. I am glad that I browsed and got the entire series on one audiobook. Anyone who enjoys radio type dramatizations and humor should give this a try. My only complaint is that the background music and sounds made the voices hard to hear at times.

Disappointing

Purchased this title by accident but thought I would give it a try. Very unlikable main character, disappointing, and predictable storyline.

Better than expected!

I wasn't sure at first since it started off a bit slow, but then it picked up and became riveting!

Perseverance mostly pays off

The book started off slow with too much detail about day to day activities that had no later importance. This was quite frustrating and I did almost chuck it in but then I do have a low tolerance level so I persevered and found myself sucked into the story. Things improved thereon except when Ruby's naïveté or defensiveness tried my suspension of disbelief. The pace of the story and mystery of her past and who she is piqued my curiosity enough to want to listen more.

Entertaining and enjoyable book

Well written and excellently performed. An enjoyable listen. I like that the author didn't feel the need to add excessive sex and gore in order to write a good story. The story description isn't quite adequate. I was a bit surprised when Ruby learned her true identity. Didn't see that coming! I look forward to the next book in the series.

Interesting

Interesting storyline but threadbare character motivations. I enjoyed the authors perspective on ware wolves enough that I will try the next book.
