    Title: Harold Larwood
    Author: Duncan Hamilton
    Narrator: Alex Jennings
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-10
    Publisher: Quercus Publishing Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Harold Larwood is an England cricketing legend. During the MCCs notorious 19323 Ashes tour of Australia, his Bodyline bowling left Australias batsmen bruised and battered, halved the batting average of the great Don Bradman and gave England a 41 series victory.
But the diplomatic row that followed brought Anglo-Australian relations to the brink of collapse. Larwood was used as a scapegoat by the MCC, which demanded he apologise for bowling Bodyline. Arguing that he had simply obeyed the instructions of his captain, Douglas Jardine, Larwood refused. He never played for England again.
The Bodyline saga has been told before, but Larwoods story has not. Using materials provided by the fast bowlers family, Duncan Hamilton has created an intimate and compelling portrait of Larwoods life: from his mining village upbringing, through the trauma of 19323 and its bitter aftermath, to his emigration to Australia, where he and his family found happiness.
A moving recreation of the triumph, betrayal and redemption of a working-class hero, Harold Larwood will enthral not only cricket fans, but all those who relish biographical writing of the highest quality.
    Members Reviews:
    A wonderful book, superbly read.
If you love cricket and are intrigued by the "Bodyline" test series then I expect you have already bought this title and have loved it as much as I have. But even if you are not a fan of the game you should consider this book. Duncan Hamilton's writing captures both the man and the times in which he lived to perfection. Larwood is clearly Hamilton's hero and by the end of the book I suspect he will be yours too. The character traits that made Larwood the best bowler in the world and also contributed to his downfall - single-mindedness, personal humility and sheer hard work - are beautifully drawn. You can almost smell the sweat in the changing rooms and feel the fear of the incoming batsman as Larwood flew into bowl. It shows how the world of sport has changed beyond recognition. How many county bowlers would be prepared to walk seven miles to the county ground, bowl all day and then walk back again? The text is wonderfully served by Alex Jennings who captures the class-ridden world of 1920' and 1930's cricket perfectly with his voice characterisation. I cannot recommend this recording enough.
    1st Class
I listened to this book over the course of 2 night shift and was annoyed everytime someone spoke to me.
This is a 1st class book, well written, and well read.
The story of a quiet man who just wanted to enjoy playing cricket, if only life was that simple.
Both touching and amusing if you like cricket history you will love this book.
    Heart touching story
What made the experience of listening to Harold Larwood the most enjoyable?
Way above the average cricket book.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Story is our medium. It's how we connect emotionally with our viewers. And it's how we make sense of our world.... When we talk about a 'big story,' we're really talking about what resonates with people, what matters to them.... And I think when it comes to our national narrative, what we need to realize is that we're all contributing to the story, that we can affect where this country is going."
From top CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O'Brien comes a highly personal look at her biggest reporting moments, from Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Southeast Asia, and the devastating Haiti earthquake to historic elections and high-profile interviews with everyday Americans. Drawing on her own unique background and consciousness as well as her experiences as a journalist at the front lines of the most provocative issues in today's society - and particularly from her work as host of the acclaimed series Black in America and Latino in America - O'Brien offers her candid, clear-eyed take on where we are as a country and where we're going. What emerges is both an inspiring message of hope and a glimpse into the heart and soul of one of America's most straight-talking reporters.

    The Color of Success
Soledad O'Brien's Journey through the Land should be an inspiration for all, especially women of color who feel they cannot break through the glass ceiling to achieve success. She has shown that anything is possible. I enjoyed reading her novel after watching her transition from CNN to owning and operating her own production company. You go girl!
    She rocks!
Soledad has indeed lived the exciting kind of life that makes for great copy! She has championed many causes, and been able to identify with those audiences. I can't help but think that her racial identity heightened her awareness and concern for people of color, down on their luck . I applaud strong women like her and the wonderful parents who nurtured her...her story is a BIG story and deserves to be told.
    Five Stars
Great back story on her life and career; interesting insights as to what goes into "making it!."
Great & very real story of the person, family, & backstories behind the headlines!
I liked Soledad's work, but now I really like the person, mom, daughter, & wife, even more. A great story of growing up "different" but not letting others define you, or what you can do. Both inspirational & educational, while being entertaining, my only complaint was that this book kept me up very late at night because I didn't want to put it down.
    Two Stars
ok book. had to read it because of a class assignment!

Zombies in North London, death cults in the West Country, the engineering deck of the Enterprise: actor, comedian, writer, and self-proclaimed supergeek Simon Pegg has been ploughing some bizarre furrows in recent times. Having blasted on to the small screen in the gut-busting and now legendary sitcom Spaced, his enduring appeal and rise to nations-favourite-son status has been mercurial, meteoric, megatronic, but mostly just plain great.
From his childhood (and subsequently adult) obsession with science fiction, his enduring friendship with Nick Frost, and his forays into stand-up comedy which began with his regular Monday morning slot in front of his 12-year-old classmates, Simon has always had a severe and dangerous case of the funnies.
So, sit back, relax, and let Simon Pegg and his faithful robotic butler Canterbury take you on a spectacular journey of self-discovery. (Or, take this book to school and swap it for something cooler) Dotted with a cast of memorable characters who have helped shape the life and career of a complex, dynamic and unstoppable man, Nerd Do Well is the joyous tale of a home-grown superstar and a local boy made good.

    if you love simon pegg
I love Simon Pegg. His voice is pleasant and his thoughts are entertaining. it split into a story and biographical narratives. Would read again - especially if I could only hear the biographical parts.
    Funny
Not a fan of the robot side story, but overall a great book. Pegg does a great work reading his book, he's a superb storyteller.
    Not a typical Autobiography
It very funny and qurkie he really set out to make it a book and an autobiography in one.Its quite a clever way of keeping
the reader intrested. one of the most intresting autobiographies I have read in a long time.
    Just fantastic...
I laughed, I cried, I loved this. My first ever autobio and I wonder if any other could ever live up to it. Simon P is a gem; hilarious, witty, caring, ohhhh, gush gush, he's a genuine lovely guy and he takes you along on the amazing journey his life has taken so far with a fabby snort-fest sci-fi story sandwiched between the 'real' stuff. Finished it... started listening to it all over again. Fantabulous!
    You will laugh out loud
Simon Pegg seems to enjoy narrating an autobiography that he seemed reluctant to write. I've read the book as well and oddly, the bits I enjoyed more in the audio version are the surreal episodes of Pegg and his robot butler Canterbury where as when I read the book I found them a bit of an intrusion. I suppose it's because a comic performer is less comfortable delivering the more sobering account of their own life than the made up adventures of an international crime fighting sex-god.
The sober bits are good though and original too. The unique element of this autobiography is the recurring theme of circularity where Pegg marvels in the neatness that he would grow up to work with the very people most responsible for making him the film-geek he is today.

    Publisher's Summary:
Larry Feldman desperately needed a kidney. After two god-awful years on dialysis, watching his life ebb away while waiting on a transplant list behind 74,000 other Americans, the gun-toting couch potato decided to risk everything and travel to China, the controversial kingdom of organ transplants. But Larry urgently needed his cousin Daniels help . . . even though they had been on the outs with each other for years. So begins the quest of two star-crossed cousins to rejuvenate Larrys failing body and ever-romantic heart, while avoiding getting tossed into a Chinese slammer.

    Critic Reviews:
"Author Daniel Rose acts out his book-length stand-up comedy routine about going to China in search of a kidney for his cousin Larry. The performance is reminiscent of a nightclub act, so listeners can expect a little smut and lots of double entendres. The shrieking voice of the author/narrator creates a character for Larry and another for the sexy and not-too-innocent local guide. The girl speaks the stereotypical broken English we expect from uneducated Chinese in Hollywood movies. Frequent quotes from ungrammatical fortune cookies come preceded by the sound of a small bell. Within a short time, listeners will realize they cant expect anything serious but may have become so caught up in the absurdity that it doesnt matter." (AudioFile)

    Modern Quest
I purchased this book after hearing the author interviewed on NPR by Leonard Lopate. There was something about him that intrigued me. And the book did not disppoint, though it was different to what I expected. This is a story about an intriguing character, Larry, his cousin, the author and how they take control of the situation to save Larry's life.
It's an account of their journey and the people they meet along the way. It's also about some of the ways that the people of China differ from the people of the West, and also how connections are made in spite of the differences. Often funny, I would recommend this book if just because Larrys are rare these days. He so reminds me of my father's generation, absolutely untouched by "political correctness" or deference. Larry makes no apologies for being who he is, and he is in many ways reprehensible. But why do I like him so much? Why did I root for him to succeed and survive? Please, listen to it and tell me!

    Publisher's Summary:
What possesses a right-minded comedian to quit the day job for life as a breakfast radio DJ?
"I have always been very aware that millions of people truly appreciate the breezy banter and lively tone of the majority of breakfast broadcasting. I admit that on occasion I have been known to wake up in a good mood and feel quite chirpy. Unfortunately for me this happens one day a year at most." (Phill Jupitus)
Why exactly would a nationally successful stand up comedian, chuck in the exhilaration and freedom of life on the road for endless Coldplay singles, arguments with BBC management, incredibly expensive coffee, and an alarm clock set to 4.30am, five days a week?
When the BBC decided to launch a brand new digital radio station that would play alternative music for truly passionate music fans, their first port of call was to elicit the services of Phill Jupitus.
With a record collection that ran the gamut from calypso to techno, and a love of radio inspired by his childhood hero John Peel, Phill seemed the perfect choice to launch 6 Music.
Phill readily accepted, determined to do something different with such an unexpected yet brilliant opportunity. Little did he know what lay ahead. With the weighty advice of such broadcasting behemoths as Terry Wogan, Steve Wright and Tony Blackburn ringing in his ears, Jupitus tried to shake up the world of breakfast radio for the better one tune at a time. Were the public ready for something new? But more importantly, did they even want it?
In Good Morning Nantwich, Phill Jupitus not only discovers the answer but finds out what really makes the listening nation tick first thing in the morning.
    Members Reviews:
A warm big hearted plea for great radio
Phil Jupitus argues that radio does not need to be formulaic soul less pap made by those who are more concerned with business than music. I loved this book and can not believe that there is not room on the airwaves for Phil and his ilk. Imagine a world where the content was sellected with love, care, whimsy and passion. Radio is in the hands of the dull and safe grey people who know how not to offend but do not know how to be great. In his time at 6 music he was up against a massive awareness problem and held back by the lack of digital sets. Just imagine what he could do now that digital penetration is reaching a critical mass and music lovers are allert to the gem that was so nearly lost when BBC axe men planned to close the station. A must read for all who love music radio.
    Mr Jupitus. LoL
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, and I would have listened to more. Entertaining, funny and an insight into Phill's radio career that I really wasn't aware of.
A Philup but not a Journey all the way to Jupitus
Would you listen to Good Morning Nantwich again? Why?
No, done it now. Wasn't wholly what I was expecting but interesting none the less
Would you be willing to try another book from Phill Jupitus? Why or why not?
Possibly. I had foolishly thought this would be a full autobiography of a person I thought I knew because of the stand up circuit and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. But his musical tastes seem more varied and at a tangent to mine. I have never listened to his music show.

Length: 11 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-10
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 128 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
    a) A fatuous, wasted, degenerate and wholly useless existence captured in delicate, lyrical and exquisitely realised prose.
    b) Lightly amusing anecdotes and tender reminiscences of the great men and women encountered during a rich, varied and rewarding lifetime, fondly remembered in the tranquil evening of a career of public service.
    c) The autobiography of a dizzying life fuelled by the lust for power and the search for ever more degrading downward paths of repulsive sexual adventuring and self-destructive debaucheries: the unrepentant libertine author seeks revenge on his many enemies and tears the lid off the private life of blameless churchmen and librarians.
Fry`s autobiography is all and none of these. Too old to rock and roll, too young to die, the author looks back with bruising frankness at his life so far.
    Critic Reviews:
"Stephen Fry is one of the great originals. This autobiography of his first twenty years is a pleasure to read, mixing outrageous acts with sensible opinions in bewildering confusion. That so much outward charm, self-awareness and intellect should exist alongside behaviour that threatened to ruin the lives of innocent victims, noble parents and Fry himself, gives the book a tragic grandeur and lifts it to classic status." (Financial Times)
"He writes superbly about his family, about his homosexuality, about the agonies of childhood - some of his bursts of smile take the breath away - his most satisfying and appealing book so far." (Observer)
    Members Reviews:
    Genius
This man is a wordsmith of the highest degree and totally enjoyable to listen to. Only Stephen Fry could have read his own book and he did it brilliantly.
One problem - now I listen to other peoples autobiographies they mostly seem shallow and poorly written and have little detail as Frys writings have in spades.
Listen to the Fry Chronicles First / Instead
If you're interested in Stephen Fry, start (and perhaps also finish) with the Fry Chronicles instead (Fry's autobiography of the second twenty years of his life). While Fry narrates both autobiographies exquisitely, Moab is My Washpot (of his first twenty years), is less interesting and calls for a good reining in and editing (even more than the Chronicles). The most interesting part, for me, was his account of how thoroughly he was tormented by his inner-devils as a child and adolescent, and how completely he screwed his life up, and then how he took control of his life and made such a success of himself. Parents and teachers take note that Fry leaves no details out of his early sexual experiences, from his more solo adventures to a rather worrying deflowering by an older boy at school. Probably more for die-hard Fry fans.
Brutal honesty, mature reflection and lots of fun
What did you love best about Moab Is My Washpot?
A jolly good English romp but with enough humour and twists to prevent it being too toff. Although it mostly talks about Fry's education in the British Public School system, his is no conventional itinerary: there is the foreign family background, the gay consciousness and the never ending maverickness which caused some laugh out loud moments.
He also writes with brutal honesty about adolescent infatuations and shortcomings.

    Title: The Last Hero
Subtitle: A Life of Henry Aaron
    Author: Howard Bryant
    Narrator: Dominic Hoffman
    Format: Abridged
Length: 9 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-11-10
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In the 34 years since his retirement, Henry Aaron's reputation has only grown in magnitude: he broke existing records (rbis, total bases, extra-base hits) and set new ones (hitting at least 30 home runs per season 15 times, becoming the first player in history to hammer 500 home runs and 3,000 hits). But his influence extends beyond statistics, and at long last here is the first definitive biography of one of baseball's immortal figures.
Based on meticulous research and interviews with former teammates, family members, two former presidents, and Aaron himself, The Last Hero chronicles Aaron's childhood in segregated Alabama, his brief stardom in the Negro Leagues, his complicated relationship with celebrity, and his historic rivalry with Willie Mays, all culminating in the defining event of his life: his shattering of Babe Ruths all-time home-run record.
Bryant also examines Aaron's more complex second act: his quest to become an important voice beyond the ball field when his playing days had ended, his rediscovery by a public disillusioned with todays tainted heroes, and his disappointment that his career home-run record was finally broken by Barry Bonds during the steroid era, baseball's greatest scandal.
Bryant reveals how Aaron navigated the upheavals of his time, fighting against racism while at the same time benefiting from racial progress and how he achieved his goal of continuing Jackie Robinsons mission to obtain full equality for African-Americans, both in baseball and society, while he lived uncomfortably in the public spotlight. Eloquently written, detailed and penetrating, this is a revelatory portrait of a complicated, private man who through sports became an enduring American icon.
    Critic Reviews:
"An eye-opening biography of the Braves outfielder, the real home-run king...but Bryant makes clear that this slugger's story was always about more than merely overcoming blazing fastballs. Plenty of baseball for the fan, but even more insight into why Aaron matters beyond the game." (Kirkus)
"Not just another book on Hank's prodigious ability to elevate baseballs over the fences....the postcareer exploits of Aaron will inspire all readers. Bryant evokes the apparently distant world marked by cruel segregation, racism, and poverty of the soul, as well as reliving some of the greatest moments of baseball. A most welcome book, most highly recommended." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Good, but should have been better.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would have done a better job of editing & fact checking before recording the narration. I'm a 65 year old Milwaukee Braves fan. I grew up living & dying with every Henry Aaron at-bat, as well as the Braves' games. I'm only about a quarter of the way through this audio book & I've already cringed at a couple of gross mis-pronunciations and a blatant identity error. Billy Bruton was a major influence oh Henry's early days as a Brave, yet the narrator never once pronounced his name correctly. A major oversight, IMO. He also mis -pronounced the Braves' spring training city ... Bradenton, and named Carl Sawatski as a pitcher (he was a catcher) when I presume he meant Carl Willey. These are unforgivable errors to us true fans.
Also, this book hasn't gotten to me emotionally as did Henry's autobiography, I Had A Hammer.

The real story of one of the greatest explorers who ever lived by the man described by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's greatest living explorer.
Sir Ranulph Fiennes is uniquely qualified to write a new biography of Captain Scott. This is the first biography of Scott by someone who has experienced the deprivations, the stress and the sheer physical pain that Scott lived through. Ranulph Fiennes tells the story of Scotts life and discusses how his achievements have been viewed after his death with empathy and great skill.

    Humanity's last great earthly challenge
If you could sum up Captain Scott in three words, what would they be?
    Agonizing Frostbitten Defeat
What was one of the most memorable moments of Captain Scott?
One of the most graphic and intense images I've experienced in a novel was the discovery of Oates' collapsed body. I could feel the non-fiction frostbite burning his non-fiction flesh. Intense.
Which character as performed by Ranulph Fiennes was your favorite?
    Narrator
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were a couple of moments in the book that moved me - one was when the team had finally reached the pole, only to discover that Amundson had already been there. The other moment was when the team reached their depot only to find it was not well supplied (fuel had leaked).
    Any additional comments?
The story was great - a non fictionalized account of the last great earthly expedition. It was well narrated, with the annunciation and precision that only the English could offer, but it did get a bit distracted at the end I felt as though throughout most of the novel that Sir Fiennes was acting in defense of Scott, even though Sir Fiennes declared that this would be a transparent view of the events that had transpired. The mask really came off during his 20 'or so' minute rant at the end of the novel. I felt that was unnecessary. Other than that, I can't imagine a better person to provide insight into a journey of this magnitude. Sir Ranulph Fiennes was very appreciative of the efforts that this journey would have taken. Details of equipment (tents, boots, et al.) were welcomed. The author provided a credible level detail and insight that could be matched by few (if any) others on the planet. Aside, observing Sir Fiennes body of work, I believe him to be the inspiration for the fictional Dos Eqies spokesperson - The World's Most Interesting Man.
    Terrible Delivery
Ranulph Fiennes is obviously a well respected explorer in his own right and no doubt that's why he was chosen to read this account, however he is not a voiceover artist. Not only is the quality of the audio pretty poor but Fiennes delivery is f*king abysmal. He must have recorded it himself and then emailed it to the publishing company. I bet they just cast him without doing a test record and when the first audio files came through from Ranulph they realised what a massive mistake they made. He has the most monotone emotionless delivery imaginable. It's the perfect case for increasing funding in AI.
Excellent, unbiased review of Scott's expedition
I am an avid reader of polar expeditions, and seen most documentaries out there. It has bothered me for some time the negative image I was presented of Captain Scott, and then I listened to this book. Very good, excellent portrayal of Scott without melodrama or exaggeration.

Born Maurice Micklewhite, son of a Billingsgate fish porter and a charlady, Michael Caine's life has been an extraordinary rollercoaster: from washing dishes and fighting on National Service, to winning two Oscars and being knighted by the Queen.
With more than 80 films to his name, he has starred in some of the classics of modern cinema: as an action anti-hero in Get Carter, a Cockney lothario in Alfie, and a disillusioned alcoholic academic in Educating Rita.
He is an enduring model of British cool. This authorised biography charts the amazing highs and lows in his turbulent ride to fame, fortune, and respect.

    The reader is fabulous
This book is so easy to get into as the reader has the knack of using several different voices for different characters thereby making it so easy to follow. His voice is startling as Michael CAINE. Wow.
    Great performance
Interesting look at a wonderful actor. Especially enjoyed the ability of Andrew Wincott to mimic Sir Michael Caine.
    Not as expected
Unlike the previous reviewer; I found the cockney Michael Caine impression quite good. What I did not like was the constant a*** licking style. We all know how good an actor Michael is or we would not be reading the book. If you were to take out the film reveiw's and gushing of how great michael is then this book is sparse. if I wanted to read a reveiw of any of the films I could do this online. I am not what you would call a BIG fan of MC I appreciate his good films and outspoken views but I did not learn aything new from this book at all. I suspect it's more about what he does not say rather than what he does; every fellow actor he has appeared with is described as 'utterly professional' so if you have worked along side Mr Caine and not got a mention then your probably not on his xmas card list. Disapointed!
    Interesting narrator
I must admit to not listening to this one all the way through - I found the choice of narration ill-suited to the subject matter. After listening to 15 minutes I then skipped through to see if the style changed - it didn't.
There is (in my opinion) over the top emphasis and expression - like the narrator was auditioning for a west-end Shakespearian play any trying out a spoken style range to add excitement and interest. His impersonations were interesting as well and in all the style use detracted from the value of learning more about the life and times of Sir Michael Caine. A disappointment.
I'm sure many will find the narration an added layer of enjoyment, unfortunately I did not.
