    Title: Clemente
Subtitle: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero
    Author: David Maraniss
    Narrator: David Maraniss
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 58 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
There is delightful baseball here, including thrilling accounts of the two World Series victories of Clemente's underdog Pittsburgh Pirates, but this is far more than just another baseball book. Roberto Clemente was that rare athlete who rose above sports to become a symbol of larger themes. Born near the canebrakes of rural Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18, 1934, at a time when there were no blacks or Puerto Ricans playing organized ball in the United States, Clemente went on to become the greatest Latino player in the major leagues. He was, in a sense, the Jackie Robinson of the Spanish-speaking world, a ballplayer of determination, grace, and dignity who paved the way and set the highest standard for waves of Latino players who followed in later generations and who now dominate the game.
The Clemente that Maraniss evokes was an idiosyncratic character who, unlike so many modern athletes, insisted that his responsibilities extended beyond the playing field. In his final years, his motto was that if you have a chance to help others and fail to do so, you are wasting your time on this earth.
    Critic Reviews:
"Maraniss deftly balances baseball and loftier concerns like racism; he presents a nuanced picture of a ballplayer more complicated than the encomiums would suggest, while still wholly deserving them." (Publishers Weekly)
"Maraniss delivers a mother lode of wonderful baseball lore." (Booklist)

    Good, but not great
Clemente was a great baseball player and David captures his character well, and the narrator was fine. Clemente's humanitarian side was interesting, and the details of the plane crash were riveting. Even so, the story of a great ball player overcoming cultural prejudice, acting as a genuine philanthropist, and meeting a tragic end was -- well, duller than I expected. David Maraniss's "They Marched into Sunlight" was superb and prompted me to try this book. I also liked "When Pride Still Mattered" -- a biography of Vince Lombardi better than this one.
Loving tribute to the greatest Pirate of all time
This book should be required reading/listening for all baseball fans young & old. It's one of those titles that really played with my emotions throughout.
At times I was angry, such as the annual Jim Crow treatment Roberto received in Florida Spring Training every year; the measly 13,000 fans who showed up to witness his 3,000th hit; and the fiasco that surrounded the incompetent owner & pilot of his fateful Earthquake relief flight.
Other moments literally sent chills up my spine, such as the thrilling Game 7 of the 1960 World Series and Ritchie Hebner's & Earl Weaver's account of THE THROW in the 1971 Fall Classic.
As a lifelong Pirate fan there was so much that I never knew about the man until I listened to this: his brother's death also on New Year's Eve 18 years earlier; the death of his sister which haunted him throughout his life; and his constant predictions that he would die young: even telling friends that it would happen over the Christmas/New Year's Holiday in 1972.
My only complaint whatsoever with this was that only the abridged version is available here or on CD in your lcoal bookstore.

And with unflinching honesty she addresses the tragedy of her mother's suicide; her turbulent relationship with her father, Henry Fonda, her lovers and husbands, her passions and political views.

    "Remarkably frank autobiography." (Sunday Telegraph)

    An amazing lady and story
I loved this book, not only did it change the way I think about her but a number of topics she touches on in the book , she read it well and you just hear the talent in her voice. I think that the way she tells the story is heartfelt and honest and she really did this for her benefit as much as for ours to hear it. An amazing story from an amazing legend of screen and life!
How wonderfully open and honest - thank you Jant
n open, honest and uplifting account of the life of a brave and string woman, despite her upbringing and childhood/ adolescent experiences. So glad I read this book. Jane feels as though she is my sister, mother, best fiend all in one. And has given renewed courage to celebrate being myself and not let early life experiences define me.
A fine balance between the not-said and the Life
Ali Smith says we readers/listeners are most impacted by the undertow which we glean as we interact with an author.
I could feel this powerful undertow as I reacted to events I knew about, or didn't, in this iconic figure Jane who vividly showed up in our lives in a time when Stars not celebrities roamed the earth.
Her lifetime runs almost parallel to my own and although hers has not been an erudite life, she has been exposed to some of the century' s greatest thinkers, creatives and world events.
Her movies were often pivotal in my own understanding of what was possible. Perhaps she is partially responsible for the muddied gender roles we were offered at the time.
Gratefully, I was privileged with a more academic grounding so I was able to make some different choices..earlier.
Nonetheless, her journey is acutely familiar and endearingly expressed.
Younger men and women could learn a great deal from this book, even if it has real flaws.
Hence the Undertow I refer to.
Methinks Ms Fonda may not yet have learnt enough humility to really face up. Not by the end of the book-and she says as much. Full credit to her.
Maybe her age 60-80 years will help her get there. I have a feeling she might.
    A Life of Learning
I'd recommend this book to women in life transition, particularly those of us who, like me, have come through a storm & taken the time (4yr in my case) to heel, nurture & ground herself. I bought Jane's 'My Life So Far' & 'Prime Time' after viewing her impressive TEDX talk about 'The Third Act'. If, like me, you enjoy biographies &, in the case of this book, value the life perspective of an older, wise (yet vulnerable & uncertain in herself) & ever attentive woman, then I suggest that you will enjoy & reflect meaningfully with this book.
amazing woman... Jane Fonda is truly inspirational
what a woman! Jane Fonda's life story had much to teach and her voice is engaging to listen to

    Title: Shark
Subtitle: The Biography of Greg Norman
    Author: Lauren St. John

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-15-05
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Three parts Crocodile Dundee, two parts Jack Nicklaus, and one part Don Quixote, the jet-setting Shark is larger than life. He has raced Ferraris with Nigel Mansell, hauled marlin over the side of plunging boats, scuba dived with sharks, taken a joyride in an F-14, saved drowning friends, and entertained a US president at his Florida compound. Yet Norman stands blond head and broad shoulders above golf's elite as the sport's most notorious victim of cruel calamity. His dramatic losses at the 1986 PGA Championship, the 1987 Masters, and the 1996 Masters rank among golf's most inexplicable defeats rendered by the most outrageous strokes of misfortune.
In this riveting and revealing biography, internationally acclaimed journalist Lauren St. John examines Norman's conquests as well as his failures and his relationships with his father, his agents, fellow golfers, and caddies. Using her unparalleled access to dozens of people who know Norman best, including the Shark himself, St. John explains how Norman's fear of bankruptcy drove him to win the 1986 British Open; exclusively reveals the background of the break-up with his first manager and his subsequent split with IMG; tells why golf's greatest natural talent has so often snatched defeat from the jaws of victory; and explains his tempestuous relationships with Jack Nicklaus and other top players.

    Terrible narration
I have started to listen to this bike twice but the narration is so terrible I cannot continue. The narrator sounds like he is teaching to a kindergarten class. A more annoying narration I have not heard in my years of listening to books on audio.
Unless you enjoy the punishment of bleeding ears - give it a big miss - which is a pity as I am sure it would be a good book, I may actually have to buy a copy of the actual book
    Its a hard listen
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Found the book hard to listen to, not sure if its because of the accent of the narrator or the monotone delivery. Disappointing purchase
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ian Esmo?
    Greg Norman

  • Ted Williams Audiobook by Leigh Montville

    Title: Ted Williams
Subtitle: The Biography of an American Hero
    Author: Leigh Montville
    Narrator: Phillip Bosco
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-21-04
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Still a gangly teenager when he stepped into a Boston Red Sox uniform in 1939, Williams' boisterous personality and penchant for towering home runs earned him adoring admirers (the fans) and venomous critics (the sportswriters). In 1941, the entire country followed Williams' stunning .406 season, a record that has not been touched in over six decades. At the pinnacle of his prime, Williams left Boston to train and serve as a fighter pilot in World War II, missing three full years of baseball. He was back in 1946, dominating the sport alongside teammates Dominic DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, and Bobby Doerr.
Ted Willams' personal life was equally colorful. His attraction to women (and their attraction to him) was a constant. He was married and divorced three times, and he fathered two daughters and a son. He was one of corporate America's first modern spokesmen, and he remained, nearly into his eighties, a fiercely devoted fisherman. With his son, John Henry Williams, he devoted his final years to the sports memorabilia business, even as illness overtook him. In death, controversy and public outcry followed Williams, the result of disagreements among his children over the decision to have his body preserved in a cryonics facility; a fate, many argue, Williams never wanted.
With unmatched verve and passion, and drawing upon hundreds of interviews, acclaimed best-selling author Leigh Montville brings to life Ted Williams' superb triumphs, lonely tragedies, and intensely colorful personality, in a biography that is fitting of an American hero and legend.
    Critic Reviews:
"Thanks to the author's ability to track down new sources of information, Montville presents a more nuanced portrayal of the baseball star than many previous biographies....An extraordinary glimpse into Williams' complex psyche." (Publishers Weekly)
"Montville...offers a warts-and-all portrait of the Red Sox star but also shows Williams' wit, empathy, intelligence, uncommon loyalty to those he called friends, and unswerving commitment to excellence." (Booklist)
"The strength of Montville's book derives from how Williams emerges from all of this not as victimized but as accountable. It is unlikely that any reader could view Ted Williams just as a ballplayer ever again." (The New York Times Book Review)

    Best There Ever Wuz!
Not being a Boston Red Sox fan, I for decades had been denying the greatness (or trivializing it) of Ted Williams. This book changed that as fast as a Williams line drive whizzing past my ear. I went from denial to fan boy in a couple chapters. I am now a full fledged card carrying member of the All Time Teddy Ballgame fan club. The book is incredibly well written. Terrific insider stories and nuanced profile of the real legend. The subject is so facinating in that his pursuit of perfection made him the very best at everything he touches, from baseball to fishing and business all the way to the hall of fame. The hitting legend is dissected, the grumpy relecutant superstar revealved, the complex relations with family exposed. The intimate nature of the stories makes this a world class book. The miltary service detail in the book also reveals Williams to be truly worthy of his "Amercian Hero" status.

    Title: Wonder Girl
Subtitle: The Magnificent Sporting Life of Babe Didrikson Zaharias
    Author: Don Van Natta Jr.
    Narrator: Hillary Huber
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-16-11
    Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 23 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Texas girl Babe Didrikson never tried a sport too tough and never met a hurdle too high. Despite attempts to keep women from competing, Babe achieved All-American status in basketball and won gold medals in track and field at the 1932 Olympics. Then, Babe attempted to conquer golf. One of the founders of the LPGA, Babe won more consecutive tournaments than any golfer in history.
At the height of her fame, she was diagnosed with cancer. Babe would then take her most daring step of all: go public and try to win again with the hope of inspiring the world. A rollicking saga, stretching across the first half of the 20th century, Wonder Girl is as fresh, heartfelt, and graceful as Babe herself.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Don Van Natta Jr.] spirits the reader away on this fairy-tale story with grace and humor.... Enormously inspiring." (Kirkus Reviews)
"[An] engaging biography.... a story that every American sports fan should relish." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Great bio. Bad accent
Everything you'd ever want to know about babe. Well researched. I was offended my the Texas accents. It took most of the book before I could ignore it. If you can get over that it's a great book
    Great read
She lived at a time before me but I can see how how amazing she was and how she paved the way for womens sports as we know it today. Wish I could thank her.
    awesome book!!!
Incredible book. I learned a lot about this pioneering female golfer, co-founder of the LPGA and advocate for cancer awareness in the 1950's when many refused to even say the word "cancer." Oh... and she won 2 gold and 1 silver I track and field in the 1932 Olympics, and so much more.
To me --- her ethos was a blend of Mohamad Ali's ego (coupled with the ability to back up) and Jim Thorpe's multi-sport athletic abilities along with her own mix of being a 2nd generation American who grew up poor in East Texas (which meant she also had more than a bit of baggage on issues like race and class, some good some bad).
And there is the issue of sexual orientation in her life, due to the extreme homophobia of her day she was not open about it, but today it appears clear that she was bisexual, something that this book discusses to the extent possible given the scanty historic record. Still it was helpful to see how she found ways to make her life work at this difficult time in history .
She died way too young from cancer, in her 40's, but her life is one that should be remembered.
    I highly recommend this book.
    Good story, mediocre performance
Is there anything you would change about this book?
No. It was a well researched thorough biography and not just a puff piece.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Wonder Girl?
As a child, Babe lived in a row of houses separated by hedges. The image of her learning to hurdle by running through the front yards and clearing seven hedges while her sister ran on the sidewalk was wonderful.
How could the performance have been better?
The reader should have listened to tapes of Babe speaking. Then I would not have had to listen to the cheesy drawl she forced upon the Babe. And, the reader should have learned how to pronounce the names of places and persons in the book. For example, her father was a Norwegian named Ole.

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Dancer, award-winning choreographer, show producer, stand-up comedienne, TV/film actress, and author, Norma Miller shares her touching historical memoir of Harlem's legendary Savoy Ballroom and the phenomenal music and dance craze that "spread the power of Swing across the world like Wildfire".
It was a time when the music was Swing, and Harlem was king. Renowned as "the world's most beautiful ballroom" and the largest, most elegant in Harlem, the Savoy was the only ballroom not segregated when it opened in 1926. The Savoy hosted the best bands and attracted the best dancers by offering the challenge of fierce competition.
White people traveled uptown to learn exciting new dance styles. A dance contest winner by 14, Norma Miller became a member of Herbert White's world-famous Lindy Hoppers and a celebrated Savoy Ballroom Lindy Hop champion. Swingin' at the Savoy chronicles a significant period in American cultural history and race relations, as it glorifies the popularized home of the Lindy Hop, and the birthplace of such memorable dance fads as the Big Apple, Shag, Truckin', Peckin', Susie Q, Charleston, Peabody, Black Bottom, Cake Walk, Boogie Woogie, Shimmy, and tap dancing.
Miller shares fascinating anecdotes about her youthful encounters with many of the greatest jazz legends in music history including Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters, and even boxer Joe Louis.
    Critic Reviews:
"A refreshing look at the history of swing dancing is Swingin' at the Savoy.... Miller has not only created an entertaining history of swing, but more importantly, gives the reader a sense of the personalities of people and places most have only heard of. The book is unique as a humorous autobiography, full of youthful antics and charm." (Lance Benishek, Dancing USA)
"This is an important book, bringing some much-overdue attention to the swing dancers who along with the musicians defined the era." (Robert Tate, Jazz Now)
    Members Reviews:
    Fascinating story, terrible reader
What did you like best about this story?
The story was fantastic. Lots of interesting details about the origins of swing and its evolution. Absolutely fantastic.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bettye Zoller Seitz?
I have no idea if the problem was her or the production staff, but every 30-60 seconds you could hear another voice cut in, as though the original recording was poor and needed to be fixed. It was extremely disruptive to be listening to the book and then all of a sudden to hear a different voice cut in on part of a sentence.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The book itself is fantastic, its the reader and/or production staff that was terrible.
    Any additional comments?
If the production quality is that poor that you have to have someone else come in with a voice-over every minute or so, perhaps you should redo the entire recording or hire a different reader. So obnoxious!

    Publisher's Summary:
For over 30 years, the legendary sports journalist Howard Cosell pulled no punches. Cosell said of himself, "Arrogant, pompous, obnoxious, vain, cruel, verbose, a showoff. There's no question that I'm all of those things." His blustery, cocksure personality ensured that this larger-than-life sports commentator remains as well known today as any of the athletes he covered. Sports fans of all ages will recognize Cosell's famous voice as he chronicles the history of Monday Night Football and the jocks he shared the booth with, his co-commentators Frank Gifford, Don Meredith, and OJ Simpson.
    Members Reviews:
    Classic Cosell
After seeing Monday Night Mayhem I bought the Hardcover version of the book. I bought it used, but it was in like new condition.
It was a good read. Cosell was at a point in his life where he could afford to be especially candid. The title "I never played the game" incidentally refers to both that he never played sports but also he never played the game with ABC executives or the sports hype.
Cosell is right in that he never got the respect he deserved from the public and the other sports commentators. Cosell was just the type of guy people loved to hate, but deep down I think most people loved cosell. He always brought out the emotion in any sporting event. He always had the uncanny ability to draw people in without hyping. Monday Night Football was never better when Cosell was the announcer in the early 70's.
    too much politics
I was hoping for a book about just the actual games he covered. It goes on and on about the politics behind the scenes. I got tired of hearing about people, executive types, with their reasons for doing things. I would have preferred that he went straight to what was going on during the olympics or a super bowl or world series or ?

    Publisher's Summary:
Beloved stage and screen actor Danny Aiellos big-hearted memoir reveals a man of passion, integrity, and guts - and lays bare one of the most unlikely success stories ever told. Danny Aiello admits that he backed into his acting career by mistake. Thats easy to see when you begin at the beginning: Raised by his loving and fiercely resilient mother in the tenements of Manhattan and the South Bronx, and forever haunted by the death of his infant brother, Danny struggled early on to define who he was and who he could be. Shoeshine boy, numbers runner, and pool hustler were among the first identities he tried on. After getting into trouble on the streets, he enlisted in the army at 17, served in Germany, and was honorably discharged. Later, as an unemployed high school dropout raising a family of his own, Danny was burdened with serious depression by the time he landed a job as a bouncer at a Hells Kitchen comedy club. Taking to the stage in the wee hours to belt out standards, Danny Aiello found his voice and his purpose: He was born to act. Performing in converted churches and touring companies led to supporting roles in such films as The Godfather: Part II and Moonstruck, and an Oscar nomination for his role as the embattled Salvatore in Spike Lees Do the Right Thing. For a guy who had never set foot in an acting class, this was supreme validation for being an outsider who followed his heart.
In a raw and real chronicle of his gritty urban past, Danny Aiello looks back with appreciation, amusement, and frank disbelief at his unconventional road to success. He offers candid observations on working with luminary directors and a vast roster of actors. He opens up about friends he loved, friends he lost, and the professional relationships that werent meant to be. Above all, Danny Aiello imparts a life lesson straight out of his own experience to anyone whos ever felt like an outsider.
    Critic Reviews:
"With his raspy voice, Danny Aiello brings the Manhattan of his childhood to life.... His heart and soul are present in his performance.... Throughout this gem, Aiello's integrity, grit, and, yes, polish come through loud and clear." (AudioFile)

I want to give Danny Aiello a big hug.
Aiello touches on so many great moments in movie history so relatable to my life and love of stage and screen.
He's a paradoxical mix of tough guy and teddy bear. I admire his strong values, philosophies, love of family and life. I especially love his ending words of wanting to be loved by as many people as possible. Love is the message and he truly has loved and been loved.
Thanks Mr. Aiello for making your life an open book for all to enjoy!

    Publisher's Summary:
Mickey Mantle: Inside and Outside the Lines is different from any other Mickey Mantle book. It was written for baseball lovers and Mantle fans who will live vicariously through its author Tom Molito.
The year 2016 is the 60th Anniversary of Mantle's Triple Crown season, which many baseball experts consider one of the best seasons ever for a ball player. Of course, those who experienced that season are decreasing in numbers. But Mickey Mantle is more popular than ever. The value of his memorabilia is second to none. He remains respected and admired for the redemptive quality of his life.
The book recalls never before told stories: from Park Avenue, to Las Vegas, to Cooperstown; from television shoots to concerts and Mickey's restaurant on Central Park West.
Molito collaborated with the highly respected baseball historian Harold "Doc" Friend. The late Mr. Friend wrote for Bleacher Report (CBS) and uncovered previously unknown facts about Mantle's career - such as Mickey hitting the facade in Yankee Stadium three times not the reported twice. An entire chapter updates Mantle's career with present day statistical measures and comes to the indisputable conclusion that Mickey Mantle was even better than we thought!
The book utilizes archival newspaper articles, websites and more than 35 books on Mantle to weave the most complete, unique look at an American icon.

If you love baseball, if you like the Yankees
If you love baseball, if you like the Yankees, and if you are the least bit interested in Micky Mantle, you need to read this book. Why? Because it's informative, entertaining, and insightful. Mickey Mantle the young man and apprentice player, the Mick as heroic warrior master of the baseball universe, and the mature, aging, ailing, and dying American icon, are all illuminated. Tom Molito has written a hybrid work, part biography of the Mick, part baseball memoir; the combination is magical and powerfully instructive. I read straight through the book; it's that kind of engaging read--paradoxically, because it is not a straight chronological narrative and because we already know the outcome. What kept me reading, and I imagine what will keep many others turning pages is the vividness of Molito's recollections of not just his meetings with the Mick, but his reconstructions of games he attended, his evocative descriptions of players and games and fields, his sense of humor, and most of all his unabated lifelong passion for America's pastime. Molito is as knowledgeable about baseball as anyone. His love for his idol is contagious. And he knows how to tell a story--to make us feel we are there with him. Read this book. Buy copies for your baseball loving friends. You and they won't be disappointed.
A great read for the true fan
A complete story of the one and only, Mick. After accurately depicting his great career, the author delves into his post-career life in great detail. This is, to many, the first time you may get to see this side. To me, this was most satisfying.

As a native New Yorker growing up in the 50's it was easy to be a Yankees fan and even easier to be a Mickey Mantle fan. I had the good fortune to meet him on a couple of occasions in the 60's.
