Yeesh! An Incredibly Vain, Entitled Woman!

I tried, really I did, but despite her being the heroine of this journey, I just couldn't wind up liking Paisola. This isn't just the story of the disaster, but also of her life and travels. Be prepared to hear of her publicly shaming and shouting at those who don't have the same ambition that she has, of her determination to live the American life of comfort as she travels the world, of her stepping out from the airport and basically buying the impoverished with a, "You! You're working for me when I'm here" attitude. She comes across poverty, but even then, her handlers in third world countries don't show her real poverty as they know she's too far above them to handle it.

And when it comes to the shipwreck, she's just wretched. When picked up and saved, passengers from the other ship offer her slippers as she's in but bare feet and her only thought is: I wouldn't be caught dead wearing those. When the victims are given shelter for the night, her only thought is: Here? I can't sleep here!

The narration is so well done that I had to give it only three stars as it's shrill and abusive, whiny and entitled as the story calls for it.

As far as the purchase goes, the only worse than a waste of money is a waste of time. And I want my 9 hours back...!

It is particularly interesting because Dumas, quite the advocate of liberal government himself, is clearly sympathetic toward Sand, though he clearly portrays the brutality of the murder of Kotzebue and the unstable trend of sand's mind leading up to it. In particular, through extensive transcriptions of Sand's journals and letters, he shows how this deeply Christian man became a deeply Christian assassin.

Nitty Gritty History as told by Dumas

At the beginning of his writing career Alexander Dumas researched and wrote about characters from history with a focus on their crimes and scandals. This collection includes all the other "Celebrated Crimes" books you could get separately. Don't bother with the separate books. This one has them all. It starts with the Borgias, so if you have been watching the BBC Borgias on TV this will give you some historical background that covers the facts you may miss in the series.

Good Book, needs editing.

Interesting to see where and how Dumas got his start. Not late in his career Dumas, but you can flashes of him peek through as it goes along. Lots of criminal cases we have never heard of that were probably the "OJ" of the middle 1200 to 1800's. All this needs is an editor to clean up some minot typos and formatting errors, and it will take its place in any book collection. I would have paid for this book if it had just a little editing to it.

Ok, but not as good as his other works.

Was not as well written as his other works. Often seemed dragged out and boring. The digitization was not good; resulted in many misspelled words which required additional effort to determine the correct word to be used.

Crimes are a Different Critter Now!

Dumas was a fantastic writer for the time period.

Apparently, due to the "crimes", I've noticed that gossip, pamphlets, etc were the ENTERTAINMENT! Of course no TV, radio, 'puters, & social media wasn't around...

Poisoning, ie murder, was common...

And we think our society is nasty Lmao!

Dumas is like Chocolates

Enjoyable biography of basketball's founder

This was a fun listen. I knew the basics: that James Naismith had invented basketball in the 1890s to give his students at the YMCA an indoor sport to play in the winter. But this book provided me with a lot more information about how the game came into existence and how it grew and changed in those very early years. It should be of interest to anyone who likes basketball or sports history. Naismith himself, although evidently a very good and intelligent man, doesn't come across as especially fascinating. Indeed, as it turns out, he didn't care for most of the innovations and the competitiveness which most people love about basketball today. He was a very proper, very religious late Victorian gentleman. I imagine he would be shocked by the game today. As a result, the portion of the book about his life after the game was invented is less interesting. Still, basketball fans owe Naismith a huge debt, and if you are at all interested in how the game came to be, this book is worth a listen.

I always liked Lee Grant but never knew her struggles and how she made her mark in documentary films. I wished she had narrated the entire book but completely understand why she did not. If you like stories about real women that happen to be beautiful and talented you will enjoy this.

What made the experience of listening to I Said Yes to Everything the most enjoyable?

The stories she tells of on-set antics and what the other actors were really like. Love hearing about who she liked working with and who she hated. She holds nothing back.

What was one of the most memorable moments of I Said Yes to Everything?

There are a few but the one that pops to mind is her at a party and chasing Shelly Winters up the stairs calling her the C word. That had me laughing big time. If you read the book you will find out why she does this and trust me, Shelly deserved it!

I would have to say, Lee.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

She said Yes, to everything, in a world of NO's.

I liked this book very much but after a while, I got sick of hearing about her being blacklisted. I know that is the point of the book but even after it was lifted she seems to go on and on about it. She needed to let it go. I am talking 20 years later kind of thing. I also don't understand why Lee stopped reading the book and letting someone else read the middle section. I liked the woman who took over but it seemed strange.

All and all it is a great book and I would love to read more.

Orlagh Cassidy is a great reader, but Lee Grant's appeal is a take-no-prisoners style of speaking. When she delivers dialogue, you have to listen. Cassidy reading everything in a breathy, passionate swoon is a disappointment, the wrong direction to tell the tale of a woman who has always been so admirably forthright. Grant's opening and closing narration suggest it might have been a job she wasn't up for, but it's still a missed opportunity.

Tara writes about her own experiences and provides data, evidence and case studies demonstrating that feminism is still relevant and in fact necessary. As a proud feminists myself it was great to here her edify the ideology in such a robust and positive way. Brilliant read for anyone who wants to know why women are still asking for equality.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Mr Everett is much more cooperative and revealing in his responses than his interviewer deserved. In fact, Everett gave his interlocutor some juicy leads that fell leadenly to the floor. But I have enjoyed reading RE's memoirs and enjoyed this audio production because it confirmed for me what I'd hoped was true--Rupert Everett is not only witty but he also has his wits about him. He's humble, a survivor, and a realist. Someone you'd like to know.

it was very enjoyable and he was very open and honest as usual. His life is fascinating and he speaks so eloquently. I just wish it were 30 more minutes longer. I adore him.

What did you like best about Mookie? What did you like least?

Being a huge fan of Mookie, I loved the parts about his early life and enjoyed his recounting much of the 1986 season and post season. What I didn't like as well was his complaining about how he was treated by the Mets. Not that I disagree with him. I think the Mets management treated him really shabbily, But it sounded too much like whining to me. I still don't know why the management tore apart the fabulous 1986 Mets team, and apparently Mookie doesn't either. That team could have been a dynasty if they had just left it as it was. I could have done without the last chapter, wherein Mookie describes his Christian beliefs and becoming a Minister at his church. But that is just my personal opinion. I would have preferred to hear only about Mookie the baseball player.

Ruffin Prentiss did a creditable job reading the book. He did mispronounce a few names, in particular Hal Lanier (the manager of the Houston Astros) had the pronunciation of his name butchered at every mention of it.

A Much-Needed Biography Of An Important Baseball Figure

Author Tim Hornbaker's "Turning The Black Sox White: The Misunderstood Legacy Of Charles A. Comiskey", is the first major modern biography of Charles Comiskey, the star player/manager of the famous 19th Century St. Louis Browns, and the founder of the Chicago White Sox. Today most people look at Comiskey as the so-called evil skinflint who "forced" Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven other players to lose the 1919 World Series on purpose in exchange for money from various gamblers.

Hornbaker tries to present a fair and more roundly-balanced look at Comiskey's total life, not just his actions during the 1919 Series. The author covers Comiskey's upbringing in Chicago, his entry into professional baseball, his rise to stardom with the St. Louis Browns, and stints with the Chicago Players League team, the Cinncinati Reds, and his eventual ownership of the St. Paul team in the Western League. Comiskey would move the St. Paul team to Chicago in 1900, and the Western League would become the American League. As a powerful force in the new major league, Comiskey would become one of the most important and influential men in the early 20th Century world of professional baseball.

Hornbaker has obviously done a lot research (each chapter in the book has numerous footnotes at the end--a nice idea which saves the reader from going back and forth to the end of the book). Comiskey certainly wasn't a saint--but Hornbaker makes the case that Comiskey's contributions to the game of baseball deserve more respect than they are now given.

When it comes to the Black Sox scandal, Hornbaker attempts to put Comiskey's actions during it in a new light. Hornbaker points out that there was plenty of animosity between all owners and players in the late 1910s--not just Comiskey and his White Sox.

Powerful expose about finding what drives the few

A remarkable tale if you like stories about the sea and sailing. Actually it is more than that, it is a tale about a person who is 'damaged' or is he? If he just non-conformist? Does he have demons that are larger than life or is he intoxicated with finding out the limits to which we can place upon ourselves? Either way a jolly good listen.

Impressive Story

Story builds steam culminating in the final voyage. Once the racing begins it takes off and shows the thrilling side of sailboat racing. Appreciated the Epilogue and final wreck analysis.

For sure round the world sailors are a special breed of endurance athletes and Mike Plant was one of the early pioneers.

Coyote Lost at Sea ranks as THE best audiobook I've ever listened to. I didn't want it to end. And although I received this audiobook free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review I would have listened to it anyway. Fabulous!

I don't know what other books I would compare it to because Mike Plant had his own story to tell. Julia did an outstanding job recounting Mike's life. I would like to have met Mike myself. She included some family history and her own thoughts and feelings but never took the focus off of Mike.

Which scene was your favorite?

I'm still in awe of this book. There were many, many scenes that were my favorite but I think I have to say two stood out to me. My most favorite is when he entered his first race. I felt as if I were right there with him. All the beauty he saw in the sea such as the iceberg and how he described it. Kitty did a fantastic job here. I loved when she read from his logbooks. This entire book was truly fascinating. It should be made into a movie.

A few good forays into the personal side of life

A few good forays into the personal side of life, a little too much motivational speaker stuff, and a lack of a believable transition from high school wannabe to radio star... seems like something is missing. Did this guy ever pay his dues? Not a bad book but it could use a little fleshing out.

Wonderful story! Very inspirational.

My family and I have loved watching Mr. Newton on television for years. My daughter is pursuing a career in broadcasting and found his "road" fascinating. Cheers to you, Todd!

Fun and inspiring read

I have always had a morbid fascination with Hollywood and occasionally read memoirs that promise to give me some sort of an inside look. These are fun reads but rarely have I come away from one of these memoirs as refreshed and inspired as I did after reading Todd Newton's "Life in the Bonus Round". A wonderful walk through Newton's life and his philosophies about so much that was equal parts funny, enlightening and touching. I loved the personal stories and especially the chapter on religion as I found it refreshing. If you are looking for a great read by a talented and entertaining writer, don't pass this one by.
