Not to my liking.

I am a left leaning individual like Chris. I agree with nearly every one of his points of view. However, I find his style obnoxious and worse, he isn't funny. I Didn't laugh once. I found him to be that bad American stereotype. I was hoping to learn a thing or two here. There was nothing for me I'm afraid. If you like his style, then perhaps you will fare better than I.

While I am a football fan, Chris Kluwe was not someone who was on my radar. Part of this is because he played for most of his professional life for the Minnesota Vikings, and I'm a Packers fan. Part of this is because he's a punter and, well, I don't think I could even tell you who the punter for the Packers is.

For me, I found out about Chris Kluwe when he wrote an open letter to Maryland political Emmett Burns, who had publicly condemned, and tried to stifle, Ravens player Brendan Ayanbadejo for speaking out in support of same-sex marriage.

Interesting Story of Two Baseball Greats But Obnoxious at Times

This is an interesting story of two baseball greats - Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays - and their common bond and relationship, but it can get obnoxious at times.

All the key events of their careers are included in this book: Willie Mays' catch in the 1954 World Series, Mickey Mantle's catch in the 1956 World Series to save Don Larsen's perfect game, the continued years of leading the leagues as the greatest hitters from 1954-1962, Willie Mays' great All Star games, Mickey Mantle's great World Series games, including the 1962 World Series when they played each other (which wasn't so great for either of them).

However, if you are looking for books on their careers, I would turn elsewhere, e.g. Willie Mays, the Life and Legend by James Hirsch (refenced in this book a number of times) and The Last Boy by Jane Leavy (the most recent book about Mickey Mantle although The Mick and Mickey Mantle, My Favorite Summer - 1956 are also great but hard to find now.) These books do more justice to each individual and don't go back and forth in such a way that it can get somewhat confusing at times.

What is good about this book is the relating of the times that they interacted: the barnstorming tours, Willie Mays All Stars vs. Mickey Mantle All Stars, and especially the Home Run Derby episode in 1960 which the author goes into in much detail (those were great episodes). Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle became close friends and colleagues due to similar experiences and careers and this book highlights that. If you are interested in that, I do recommend this book for you.

What is not good about this book, is the tendency of the author to make the book about himself and not these two baseball greats. I'm sorry but I didn't buy the book to read about Allen Barra and his attitudes and opinions. At the end of the book, it actual gets obnoxious. Mr. Barra's continual criticism of Willie Mays' unwillingness to take a stance and support the civil rights movement is repeated ad nauseum. And, his critism of Willie Mays' unwillingness to open up to reporters - well, I'm sorry but I just don't care what this author thinks here.

Series of 13 audio clips provided without context and certainly not in chronological or any other distinguishable order. But, it is still worthwhile to hear the greatest speak in his own words. Also, a little sad to hear how badly compromised his speaking voice became at the end of his life.

Tramp: The Life of Charlie Chaplin

Since I knew very little about Charlie Chaplin's personal life and have not read his autobiography, this book was very informative and inciteful. Ms. Milton obviously spent much time in researching and developing her version that contains heavy references to other books already written and much from his autobiography. I enjoy biographies more than autobiography because of the obvious slant in view, however, Ms. Milton did seem overly critical and bias, particularly in Chaplin's treatment of women....no sugar coating here.

My biggest criticism is not the style and delivery of the material but the number of grammatical errors and misspelled words. Maybe since this was an eread, the editing was minimal (I'm giving the publisher a break--there should have been closer editing before reputating such a product). Shame on your laziness!

not at all objective

As most people have already noted this is a very biased approach to Charlie Chaplin the man.

What's more the writer seems to be unaware of the fact that she is writing a biography about a man who lived a century ago within a totally different cultural context. She launches an attack on Chaplin's pro communist sentiments as if the man had lived in the post soviet era and was aware of what was really happening in the communist countries.

Then she comes back to accuse him of not being absolutely loyal to the communist ideals and having his doubts. She even accuses him of sympathies for the nazi ideology on the grounds that he reproduced some of the nietschean ideas of superman in a conversation. Well she admits that he might not have been a nazi but he surely was an elitist.

She implies that he committed murder.

She finds any woman that had a positive idea about him naive and the ones that held a grudge against him sensible.

Yogi Being Yogi

An interesting, quick-reading compilation of the classic "Yogi-isms". Pepe did a nice job getting them all in one book. Easy reading. I liked the end of the book re-cap where he repeated them all to create a Yogi-isms reference chart! Fun reading especially if you are a Yankees fan.

An Enjoyable Biography Of Yogi Berra

It's more of a biography of Yogi than a collection of his famous utterances, although there are plenty of those here. It's a very enjoyable book.

Witty and Wisdomy

We lost both Phil Pepe and Yogi Berra in the past year, and we are poorer for it. This isn't the best book about Yogi ever written, but it is quintessential Yogi by a baseball veteran who, like most of us, is clearly a fan.

Great story, bad narator

This is a good story. Very interesting bits about historical Palm Beach. Unfortunately, the narrator misprounces many words (and multiple times). I find this very distracting! As the key words were misprounced, it would take me out of the story and distract me. Some examples include: Bouvier (as in Jackie Bouvier Kennedy), designer Lanvin, couture, Bugatti, Mar a Lago, etc.

In addition, the story is about wealthy, educated people. The narrator sounds like a valley girl, so she doesn't lend herself to enhance the story.

The author must be cringing ...

What did you love best about Lilly?

I found this story of Lilly Pulitzer very interesting, but then this is a topic that I can't get enough of ... biographies of women involved in fashion, design, the arts. But the narration is so amateurish I can hardly believe this person could ever pass an Audible audition. Her mispronunciation of "Bouvier" being one of the most egregious but it goes beyond mispronunciations to tone -- she has no affect. A Metro North conductor announcing station stops has more emotion in his voice. So it is a credit to the author that I have stuck through this disastrous rendering of her story because I am intrigued by the content. And yes I love the context of where Lilly is from, who she's related to, where she grew up, went to school, how she was raised. I am intrigued by Lilly and how she held on to her individual style come hell or high water.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator sounds like a robot which makes the story very hard to follow. I am just going to read the book.

Not my style

I enjoyed learning about Lilly's life but found all the name dropping and "who's who" areas boring and redundant. I wish I learned more about what made Lilly tick vs. who around her had money from what source. The narrator sounded almost fake which made my mind wonder.

Not what I was expecting

I didn't really care for the story but could have been the narrator. I LOVE Lilly and was very interested in her story. I found myself not listening many times and I would need to rewind. The narrator sounded almost robotic and did not keep my attention. There were too many side stories about people who somehow are tied into Lilly's life but I couldn't tell you how. Wouldn't recommend listening to this book but reading it yourself may be different.

Very Entertaining

Would you listen to Starmaker again? Why?

A few years down the road, perhaps. I generally don't repeat listen to audiobooks. But if I did, this would be one of them.

What other book might you compare Starmaker to and why?

You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again...very similar, behind the scenes, warts and all story of Hollywood machinations and manipulations.

Which character as performed by Arthur Morey was your favorite?

The only answer I can give for this is Jay Bernstein, the author, as it's told in first-person.

The narrator is fantastic, save his frequent incorrect pronunciations of well-known pop culture names: Raquel Welch is pronounced Ra-Quell, Jaclyn Smith becomes Jocelyn Smith, Jose Eber becomes Jose Ebber. Aside from that, fantastic job.

Wonderfully chatty and self effacing

What made the experience of listening to Starmaker the most enjoyable?

Loved the honest and gossipy presentation of Jays perspective... The highs and lows and his numerous hiring and firings...

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jay Bernstein is doesn't seem to hold much back or pull any punches. He calls it as he sees it, showing himself to be a hero at times and a schmuck at other times. He was a funny guy and an interesting character. Half way through the book, I googled him to see some pictures of him with some of the celebrities he worked with that I wasn't familiar with, since we don't get a photo section with an audible book and was shocked to find out that he had died a number of years ago and the book was released after his death.
