    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-26-08
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Glenn McGrath is one of the most highly regarded fast-medium pace bowlers in cricketing history, and was a leading contributor to Australia's domination of world cricket from the mid-1990s to 2007. He holds the world record for Test wickets by a fast bowler.
McGrath retired from Test cricket after the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney 2007, while the World Cup that year marked the end of his one-day career. McGrath was named One Day International Player of the Year and Wisden Cricketeer of the year on more than one occasion.
Glenn McGrath's achievements off the field are just as admirable. With his wife, Jane, he established the McGrath Foundation, a major fundraiser and supporter of women with breast cancer. He supported Jane through her own 11-year battle with breast cancer that sadly ended in June 2008.
Glenn McGrath: Line and Strength is more than just a sporting biography and will have broad appeal to men and women. Donations can be made to the McGrath Foundation at any branch of the National Australia Bank or at www.mcgrathfoundation.com.au
Special foreword written and narrated by Dennis Lillee.

    A good story...poorly told
Glenn McGrath certainly has a great story to tell. He was arguably the world's best fast bowler, part of a storied, record-breaking cricket team and has lived through personal heartache and tragedy. More than enough for a great book. This particular book falls short because it tells this story so poorly. The chapters don't see to connect or have been written in consecutive order. The same anecdote is repeated in several chapters. The chapter that focuses on McGrath's relationships with his famous teammates- Gilchrist, Warne et al consists of tiny blurbs that say little more than: "he's a great guy". Finally, there is a lot of what the Aussies call "whinging" and score-settling. A whole early chapter that tries to explain and contextualize McGrath's love of hunting big game. A chapter devoted to McGrath's famous sledges and how he was "misunderstood." This is very much a celebrity biography- extremely one-sided
McGrath is undoubtedly a champion and deserves to have his story with depth and balance. This isn't really it. This book is only worth reading until a better one comes along.
    Outstanding.
It's a great book for any cricket fan, and I'm a Limey!! Well written and read, a compelling story of a true legend of the game.
nice spin on a fast bowler

    Title: The Express
    Subtitle: The Ernie Davis Story
    Author: Robert Gallagher
    Narrator: Paul Boehmer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-15-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Ernie Davis was an All-American on the gridiron and a man of integrity off the field. A multi-sport high school star in Elmira, New York, Davis went on to Syracuse University, where as a sophomore he led his team to an undefeated season and a national championship in 1959, and earned his nickname: the Elmira Express. Two seasons later, Davis broke the legendary Jim Brown's rushing records and became the first black athlete to be awarded the Heisman Trophy. The number-one pick in the 1962 NFL draft, Davis signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns and appeared to be headed for professional stardom. But Davis never ended up playing in the NFL; he was diagnosed with leukemia during the summer before his rookie season and succumbed to the disease less than a year later. In battling his illness, Davis showed great dignity and courage, inspired the nation, and moved President John F. Kennedy to eulogize him as "an outstanding man of great character who consistently served as an inspiration."

    Editorial Reviews:
In this audiobook, Robert Gallagher tells the brave and sad story of Ernie Davis, who was the first African-American athlete to win the Heisman Trophy. Davis made a name for himself playing football for Syracuse University, but shortly after he was drafted into the NFL, Davis died of leukemia. Paul Boehmer keeps his performance simple, with unhurried pacing, so as to let this powerful story breathe. Meanwhile, his voice carries warmth and respect for this young athlete who died in his prime.

Why did it take so long?
Why did it take so long for the Ernie Davis story to be told?He was a great player and a greater person. The book tells you the real story of Ernie Davis the movie is a distortion.Awful narration.
    Poor choice for a Narrator
The book is "fair" if you are a football fan, but the narrator made the listening excruciating. He is obviously not a sports fan. Most annoying is that is would read a team record like Syracuse's record of 7-2 in a year as "7 to 2" instead of the usual "7 and 2." In addition he mispronounced several names, most notably "ka-zonka" for Czonka. Finally, he read that Ron Luciano was a "basketball umpire." I doubt it the book actually said that.

Now Waterman tells the story of his rumbustious, action-packed life.
    Members Reviews:
Simple memoir, enlivened by its talented author
What did you love best about ReMinder?
Dennis Waterman's likable persona shines bright through his engaging reading of his memoir. I admired not only the honesty of his words, but the simplicity with which he expressed them. As an entertainer, he's had an interesting life, and many laudable successes. Like the rest of us, he has also had problems, made his share of mistakes, and not every chapter of his life has ended happily. He accepts this with humility and unvarnished candour. He's real. I love that.
What other book might you compare ReMinder to and why?
I stopped and pondered this for quite a while, but couldn't think of anything. Arbitrarily one could compare it to other entertainer memoirs in general. If one were seeking comparison, I'd suggest The Garner Files by James Garner. Different men, different lives - but both have enjoyed long, durable careers, carving a niche for themselves and becoming household names.
Which character as performed by Dennis Waterman was your favorite?
I presume this question is about his career, as he isn't portraying a character in this book - he is being himself, Dennis Waterman. Waterman's career is substantial and impressive. He's always interesting and watchable. I'm a genre fan, so cherish his appearances in Scars of Dracula, Fright, and the television series Brian Clemens' Thriller. Of course I like The Sweeney and Minder! As terrific and memorable as his earlier work has been, everything about New Tricks has been a delight. Dennis has never been better - Gerry Standing fits him perfectly. Oh, and he was hilarious playing himself on Little Britain!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
As mentioned previously, Waterman's life has not always run a smooth course. He became controversial for his candid admissions in 2012 regarding alcohol and spousal abuse. While he doesn't get graphic, he does speak here of those dark times, and of course it's hard to listen to - there's no way to make it pretty. I admired his honesty. There's no arrogance, or attitude of male entitlement here. His remorse is clear. What made me uncomfortable for him was his obvious lingering pain and confusion regarding how things could have gone so wrong. Maybe I'm thinking about this too much? There's a considerable difference between a brute and a poor sod who has found himself psychologically outdistanced in his marriage, in over his head, and making a total mess of it. While everybody needs to be safe and respected, I feel we need to reach out in a more positive way to the man when a marriage gets into such dangerous territory. The community is quick to jump to the woman's defense, but the man is in equal need of assistance, and we must learn to respond more effectively, in a timely manner, and with compassion for all.

    Great text pics just okay
This book has a good amount of text for book reports. We use it with our 2nd grade classes. The pictures however, were made to simulate real life but the illustrations are not that interesting. The book is good quality. It is good for book reports but, I do not believe most children would just pick it up and read it unless they really like baseball and Jackie Robinson.

    Title: Outback Heart
    Author: Joanne Van Os
    Narrator: Joanne Van Os
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-20-07
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Joanne van Os was just 22 when she met Rod Ansell. At 23, Rod was already a legend in Australia and around the world, having survived alone for two months without supplies in one of the harshest and most remote parts of northern Australia.
But Joanne came to realize that Rod was both a complicated and deeply troubled man. His life ended in tragedy - out of his mind on drugs, Rod became involved in a shoot-out in which a young police officer was killed.
Outback Heart captures the Territory life vividly: the dust, the heat, the struggle, and the larger-than-life characters. But it's also a deeply moving and powerful story of a love affair and a marriage, and the pain of it falling apart.
    Editorial Reviews:
The story of Rod Ansell, the "real-life Crocodile Dundee", is one of adventure, romance, and tragedy. Here, Joanne van Os recalls her life with this mercurial man - more than a testosterone-fueled cattle wrangler, Rod was thoughtful, articulate, and an engaging storyteller. The two met amid the media frenzy that followed Rods two-month plight of survival in the Outback, during which time Ansell battled crocodiles and ate feral cattle. The couple built a life together, raising two sons amid the heat and dust of the Outback, but their marriage dissolved as Rods deep-seated troubles became increasingly apparent. Joannes performance betrays her insistence that she "never gave up" on Rod. Recounting their time together, Joannes dust-tinged voice reveals feelings of joy, excitement, regret, frustration, and loving devotion.

Amazing - Well worth the read.
Was reccomended this book by my fellow truck driver who also does the Brissy to Darwin run weekly and I seriously couldn't stop listening. well done Jo, what a strong woman you are retelling this challenging story. Will be sure to reccomend. Cheers, Sarah.
    Mesmerizing!!!
I could NOT stop listening to this audiobook. I felt as though I was along for the adventure. Joanne Van Os is an incredible writer. I felt their highs and lows almost as intensely as they did. I LOVE Australia and have visited 3 times and greatly admire anyone that can endure the harshness of the Outback. WOW!!!!!
Lots of cow punching in the Australian outback
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would have liked more focus on the outback itself, less on catching, herding and killing cows etc.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I have to admit I just got bored with this book and didn't finish it.
What does Joanne Van Os bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
I believe she read her own words, which is a good way to bring a book to life.
Was Outback Heart worth the listening time?
Not for me sorry, too many cows not enough about life in the outback ( without cows).
    Any additional comments?
I was hopeing for a book about travelling in the outback, with descriptions of wildlife but got how to rope ,catch and kill cows over and over again, which wasn't really what I was expecting, although that may be the experience Ms Van Os had its not what I was expecting.
captivating and moving - what a life! a must read!
You need to hear this story.

Chris Stewart is a very entertaining writer
Introduces the reader to the beauty of Spain, the culture and food and vegetation. Love his books
The last book, but not the end of the adventure
After "Driving over Lemons" and "A Parrot in the Pepper Tree", this book deserves more than 3 stars - but less than its predecessors. It gives us a even more background, stories that didn't make the first two books, and it shows us how the young couple that came to live in an old farmhouse on the wrong side of the river in the middle of nowhere, evolves to be an acclaimed author with his wife and teenage daughter, a beautiful house with swimming pool and still, new stories of life in the South of Spain every day.
    Captivated
Really enjoyed this book. Being a lover of Spain I was motivated to read the first book 'Driving Over Lemons' and then to continue with Stewart's second and third in the series. Loved his writing style and entertaining way with words. Captivated with his characters and their shared enjoyment of a way of life that is both enriching and challenging. Disappointed there wasn't another book in the series.
    Enjoyed the road trip
Having had a break of a couple of years between the first two books it was great to go back to El Valero for a visit and especially to read about the experience in Tunisia. Thank you for continuing to expand my cultural understanding of other peoples and the use of my native English language. You are a veritable Stephen Fry. Your story telling brings with it the urgent message of personal eco responsibility wrapped in delightful humour. Trust you survive the economic downturn in Spain with self-sufficiency.

They were class clowns together, charming the girls and the teachers with their wit, and eventually going on the road as comedians. This personal account will introduce you to the Steve Martin you've never seen before: the 11-year-old, already performing near-perfect sleight-of-hand magic tricks; the 13-year-old, selling guidebooks at Disneyland; the 20-year-old, stretching his comedic wings as a vaudeville-style entertainer; and the 21-year-old Emmy Award-winning Hollywood whiz kid.

    Members Reviews:
    What's the reasl reason?
I like Steve Martin, didn't see him until later in his career. I thought this book would give me a glimpse into his background. Instead it gave me a glimpse into Morris Walker. Morris kssps stating in the book how he isn't really interested in the wealth that Steve has earned but all he talks about is the amount of money Steve Martin makes.. sounds like sour grapes to me.
I think that Morris could have written a book about his young life with Steve and leave it at that, or maybe just his life and that he happened to have Steve as a childhood friend. Or even co-wrote one with Steve Martin.
After listening to this book, I wanted to know more about Morris and his wife, how they met, what they did as far as performers. That would have been much more interesting. It's obvious he loves her very much.
I guess I just don't know the reason Morris wrote this book, but I will encourage anyone to read Steve Martin's book: 'Born Standing Up'. I have really enjoyed Steve's other books here on Audible too.
    Time to cash in
While the book give some glimpse into Mr. Martin's more private personality, it is a bit like watching slides of someone elses summer vacation. The storys are those of a couple of kids told by a very average writer.
The narrative thread is eliusive and the exposition so slapdash that most storys left me hearing Walker say "I guess you had to be there". I wish I could have been.
The stories reveal far more about the authors motivations than they do the subjects. I couldn't help but sense that this was Mr. Walkers payday for having the good fortune to become friends with a terrific talent, whose privacy prevented even his closest friends to get to know what was going on in Mr. Martins young mind.
Was interesting because I was there too.........
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed it very much because I was at Garden Grove High School while Martin and Walker did their thing. I enjoyed 'filling in the blanks' of my memories of them. I think someone who did not have that experience might not feel the time was as well-spent as I did. But, I'd still recommend they read this book... it was entertaining.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Predictable...

    loved it!
Colin Powell's Biography "Soldier" by Karen DeYoung is no doubt a page turner. I gained a ton of inspiration, insight on national security, and perspective on his school of thought. Moreover, by glimpsing the formative years of his time as an Army officer, I was able to understand his reasoning as the architect of Operation Desert Storm and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff under George HW Bush and Bill Clinton. Finally, I gained a clearer understanding on the struggle in the decision to invade Iraq (jaw dropper). (There's so much substance in this book that a Facebook post won't do it justice.)
By the end of Colin Powell's as George Bush's Secretary of State, Powell was ready to hang his hat. He didn't believe that becoming the president was a part of his destiny and wasn't pressured into doing so. He left the Washington with this disposition:
"I want to be remembered as a good public servant... someone who truly believed in his country, loved it and served to the best of his ability. As long as I'm remembered as somebody who served, that's good enough for me." -CP

Fame makes a man take things over
This book has taken on new significance for me since recent revelations about British news organizations allegedly using phone hacking and other legally questionable means to dig up private information about politicians, celebrities and crime victims in order to manipulate, exploit and intimidate them--what the comedian Steve Coogan called a "protection racket." Although this book delivers on its title's promise of a VIP backstage pass to Matt Lucas and David Walliams' "Little Britain Live" stage tour, there's a darker undercurrent to the narrative that I believe has to do with the purported racket that, if it was after Steve Coogan, would certainly have targeted Lucas and Walliams at the height of their "Little Britain" driven popularity in 2005-6, the time period documented in this book.
The wary relationship between Lucas and Walliams and the media is constantly at the forefront. Matt and David are continually checking the papers (particularly the tabloids) to see what's being said about them. A press reception is a treacherous swim through shark-infested waters, while an upcoming unauthorized TV documentary about them is an occasion for dread, particularly for David. The first time I read the book I was shocked at how much personal information David allowed to be included in it, particularly about his sex life and psychological issues--was he naive or just given bad advice by his PR people? I now realize that, finding himself suddenly under a viciously prurient level of scrutiny as an A-list celebrity, it was probably very sensible for him to preempt the scandalmongers by telling it all himself. As for Matt, the depiction here of his contented domestic life on the road with his partner seems sad and perhaps questionable now, given the tragedy that ensued.
Like the targets of the Leveson inquiry, we tend to be cynical about people in the public eye, believing that free publicity more than makes up for being allowed no privacy. I think the inhumanity of that attitude is illustrated by the level of misery that was endured by these two harmless clowns who were just trying to put on a good show.
If you love to TV show, you will LOVE this book
This book is very personal and intimate. It's very fun to read!! It follows Matt & David on their live tour. It also takes you back every once in a while how they met, how they first started out, about their childhood, friends, families, love life, etc.
It's very interesting and makes you feel "closer" to the two masterminds behind all those brilliant characters! :)
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
    Great book
