"Glamour is what I sell, it's my stock in trade." (Marlene Dietrich)
When Marlene Dietrich first became a household name in the United States, she introduced a new standard for female sexuality onscreen. Her performance in The Blue Angel (1930) stands not only as one of the most glamorous roles ever played but also as one of the frankest depictions of the femme fatale ever captured on screen. Moreover, the film essentially set the tone for the image that Marlene Dietrich would cultivate over her career: unabashedly sexual but wrapped in an air of mystery. Most stars are beautiful and talented in ways that make them noticeable, but it is generally counterbalanced by an approachability that renders them accessible to a diverse audience. Marlene Dietrich, on the other hand, did not follow this model; ever since The Blue Angel, her star persona has rested on a foundation of exoticism.
Of course the mythical qualities of Dietrich's image were no accident. Her most famous director, Josef von Sternberg, did his best to accentuate the foreign and exotic nature of his most famous actress, and in conjunction with that the most famous images of Dietrich portray her glowing face juxtaposed against a shadowy silhouette, with the ornamental composition making it seem almost as though she were an artificial creation. Her life offscreen was no less exotic, filled with an endless string of affairs that only enhanced the Marlene Dietrich myth.
At the same time, however, there is a complexity to her performances that extends far beyond the artificiality of the costumes and the sensuality of her appearance. The significance of Dietrich's career lies in the way that she combined feminine sensuality with masculine independence.

"Everybody in boxing probably makes out well except for the fighter." (Mike Tyson)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
"Iron" Mike Tyson was one of the most feared opponents to ever step into a boxing ring. With unbelievable power that floored or stopped all but two of his first 28 professional opponents, Tyson began an unprecedented ascent to the top of the boxing world, becoming the youngest champion in history with a second-round TKO over Trevor Berbick, the last man to box and defeat Muhammad Ali. That victory, in November 1986, prompted one British sports reporter to write, "The noble and manly art of boxing can at least cease worrying about its immediate future, now it has discovered a heavyweight champion fit to stand alongside Dempsey, Tunney, Louis, Marciano, and Ali."
Tyson became one of the biggest names in sports during the 1980s and could literally do no wrong in the ring, compiling a 37-0 record with 33 KO/TKOs. On top of that, he was the face of the iconic Nintendo game Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, a favorite among every video gamer in Generations X and Y. It was a stunning rise for a kid who grew up poor with no father in rough neighborhoods of New York City. Taunted for his now instantly recognizable high voice and lisp, Tyson was quick to fight and a petty criminal who became orphaned upon his mother's death when he was 16.

    Fascinating and intense biography, Shocking.
What did you love best about American Legends: The Life of Mike Tyson?
I'm not a news watcher, so I miss a lot of these highlights. Who knew, bit someones ear off, twice, his mother was a prostitute. Got charged with rape, and lost millions of dollars. This story doesn't have a boring moment. This book is a great length, gives us all the highlights, lots to talk about with our friends and family. It doesn't drag on too long, with unnecessary details, just gives us the highlights.
What was one of the most memorable moments of American Legends: The Life of Mike Tyson?
The ear biting fight, mixed emotions, the guy deserved it in a way, he kept illegally head butting him. Why weren't the judges doing something about it! But then on the other hand, really, are we animals, or humans?
What about Don Hoeksemas performance did you like?
He has the voice of a sports broadcaster, that makes you feel like you are at the fights. His voice is deep and dramatic, a rare talent. It really picks up, about a third of the way in.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely, you can listen to it on a car ride. Or enjoy it on a lazy afternoon, in bed or in a hammock.
    Any additional comments?
This biography is absolutely fantastic, Mikes life is the ultimate stretch of the highest highs and lowest lows, it is very hard not to be interested whether you like boxing or not.

"Because I was promoted as a sort of a siren and played all those sexy broads, people made the mistake of thinking I was like that off the screen. They couldn't have been more wrong." - Ava Gardner
In the 1940s, there were few women capable of reaching the level of Hollywood screen goddess like young Ava Gardner, who was "discovered" after having a portrait taken and displayed in the window of a shop. She burst onto the scene playing a seductive gangster's moll in The Killers (1946), and Gardner would continue to act for the next four decades, adding critical acclaim to her reputation as a sex symbol with an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her work in Mogambo (1953).
Although Gardner's career spanned a long period of time and continued until a few years before her own death in 1990, she is better remembered today for being at the forefront of tabloids and gossip. While the same could be said of any major Hollywood celebrity, it was especially true with Gardner because of her third husband, Frank Sinatra, who left his previous wife Nancy for her.
    Members Reviews:
Ava Gardner, one of the very few of Hollywood's Natural Beauty's-No make-up needed on this incredible woman...
Even though this didn't give you all of the great insights that Grobel's book gave you about the wonderful Ava Gardner, it was still an interesting read. I know one thing, I wish I could have stepped into the shoes of just one of her lovers just for one night! That's all I ask, and I will be a completed man! Ha! But she was a natural beauty, at least from all of the the books and pictures and personal interviews of those around her that I read. And why she wasted herself on that bimbo Sinatra is beyond me. Must have been his "natural features" that attracted her, and those of you who read Grobel's book know what I mean...ha! But he did take care of her in her last years here on earth so I have to give him that...not many would provide for an x-wife the way he did (I know I am not! Ha!)
Only the pictures are reliable and I'm not sure about them
Unfortunately, there is no point in reading this error-laden so-called biography of Ava Gardner because it may be entirely fictional. Early in the essay the uncredited writer says that Gardner's mother died of breast cancer on the day she got her divorce. Near the end of text it says Gardner got a hysterectomy to prevent the uterine cancer that killed her mother. This is just one clear-cut example. There is no excuse. Another easy to find example: it also gives two versions of the title of her autobiography ("Ava:Her Story" & "Ava:My Story"). It might be fun to read in a "spot-the-error" challenge, but as a teacher I'd have to give an 'F.'
    A nice book about Ava.
She was a interesting women. I saw all the movies she was in when I was younger. I always thought she was so beautiful.

    A good review
This is a great compilation of news articles chronicling Bryce Harpers baseball career from childhood ( ok he is still a child!) to his first season in the majors. I enjoyed following his progression and development. It's not a true biography, but gives the reader a feel for the path Bryce has taken to the big show. Nothing but great things are expected from Bryce now!
    E Book
Living near D C & being a Nats fan, I couldn't wait for Bryce to be called up, so this was the back story leading up to that. As I write this he is on the DL and the Nats have hit the skids. They desperately need his energy to ignite thim, and it better happen before the Braves pull away. This is the story of a soon to be Great Ball Player.
    Bryce Harper
The Bryce Harper Story: Rise of a young slugger
    By: The Washington Post
This book is the story about how Bryce Harper came to be a professional baseball player. Bryce Harper born in 1992 was selected first overall in the 2010 mlb draft. He was only 17 when he was selected. He started in the lower leagues and moved up little by little. There was much debate about weather he was ready for the big leagues of not. He worked hard everyday to become a better hitter than he already was. He also faced the challenge of learning a completely new position. The Washington Nationals program decided that he needed to focus on hitting, so they decided to place him in the outfield. After many long moths he finally got the call up to the major leagues due to others injuries. He made his major league debut in Los Angeles at the age of 19.
The authors of this book did a great job giving as much detail as possible about Bryce Harper. The authors did a phenomenal job giving background on Harpers life. I enjoyed ready this book a ton. The authors kept me wanting to keep reading. I would definitely recommend this great book to anyone who has even a little interest in baseball.
    Five Stars
Great book for a baseball lover
    Enjoyable read
For the most part just a compilation of all the columns written about him as he came through the ranks. But quite interesting to see the progression in that matter.

I thought the book was about Grace Kelly
Would you try another book from Jeffrey Robinson and/or Jeffrey Robinson?
Probably not, this one was such a huge deception for me.
Would you ever listen to anything by Jeffrey Robinson again?
I don't think I'll take another chance, or at least I would make sure to read all the reviews before buying it.
What didnt you like about Jeffrey Robinsons performance?
Half the book is not even about Grace Kelly. I was expecting a real bio but I got the history of european politicians, the complete history of Monaco, the story of Aristote Onasis, an interview with prince Rainier... The title of the book is Grace Kelly : The true story. It should have been :The story of Monaco and its people and a few things about princess Grace.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The author is well informed, he seems credible.

An in-depth look at an inspirational basketball legend
I love inspirational tales, and Melo's rise up from the drug-infested streets into the realm of mega-million superstardom shows that anything is possible if you believe that it is.
Follow his journey, his struggles, even being cut from his high school team. This boy had a vision â a dream from which he would not be turned, and Geoffreys brings it to life.
If you want it badly enough, if you work for it every waking moment, and live it in every thought, only then you can follow in Melo's footsteps.
From the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks, and even to the Olympic games, Carmelo "Melo" Anthony has been among the shining stars of basketball, and this biography of his struggles to get there lets you walk side-by-side with him all the way, through the highlights, the fouls, the broken bones, and the sucker punches.
Rich with statistics, scores, accomplishments, titles, and a look behind the scenes, experience his high points, and his low points, in this detailed play-by-play of Carmelo Anthony's rise to basketball fame.
Melo's world was the basketball court and he owned every square inch of it, but you don't have to be a fan of basketball to enjoy this book. Anyone with a dream can appreciate what it takes to get there, and to stay there.
    Nicely done!

Great Book for Hakeem and basketball fans
The book details Hakeem's start in basketball, how he came from Nigeria to the United States, and his career in professional basketball. The author gives a very detailed account of the highlights of Hakeem's career such as playing for the University of Houston and eventually getting drafted for Houston's pro team. Hakeem stood out and made a name for himself during the 80's and 90's golden age of basketball among other notable players such as Micheal Jordan, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and many others. The story of Hakeem going from a teen enjoying the sport in Nigeria to a lauded professional player in the United States is very inspiring. Would be perfect for any fan of the NBA of the 90's. I hope the author does more sports biographies like this.

Immaculate footballer. Imperial defender. Immortal hero of 1966. Master of Wembley. Captain extraordinary. Gentleman of all time. These are some of the words inscribed beneath the statue of Englands World Cup-winning captain, Bobby Moore, at Wembley stadium.
Since Moores death, of bowel cancer at just 51, these accolades represent the accepted view of this national treasure. But what do we actually know about Bobby Moore as a person? What about the grit alongside the glory?
Moore was undeniably an extraordinary captain and player. Pelé called him the greatest and fairest defender he ever played against. His feats for West Ham United and England are legendary and his technical mastery of the game ahead of its time. Few footballers since have come close to his winning combination of intelligence, skill, temperament and class.
Yet off the pitch, Moore knew scandal, divorce and drink. What about the string of failed businesses, whispers of bad behaviour, links to the East End underworld and turbulent private life? Ignored by the football world post-retirement, this great of the game drifted into obscurity and, famously, there was no knighthood.
Acclaimed football writer Matt Dickinson traces the journey of this Essex boy who became the patron saint of English football, peeling away the layers of legend and looking at Moores life from all sides in triumph, in failure, in full.

    Publisher's Summary:
Omid Djalili's fascinating story begins with an unconventional childhood spent at his family's London guesthouse for visiting Iranians. At school he is kept busy with the beginnings of a passionate love affair with football but he hopes one day to live a more intellectually fulfilled life. For one wonderful summer in California it seems that maybe he will find his spiritual home at UCLA. Sadly his exam results don't quite hit the mark (it's difficult to study astrophysics at one of the world's top universities without O-level maths) and so, ever hopeful, Omid returns home to spend the next three years sitting his A-levels again, and again, and again.
Eventually, in a moment of madness, he concludes that the best way to achieve the desired A-level results is to 'improve' his certificates. Travelling to the university of Ulster he finds true connection and relaxing solitude despite the backdrop of Northern Ireland at the height of the Troubles and nearly being killed by paramilitaries. Here he decides that a life in show business is the only secure option he has left, and what follows is a hilarious and captivating insight into the life of a young performer who embraces his cultural identity, works harder than anyone else, and doesn't give up until he has hung out with Brad Pitt in Morocco, injured himself severely while showing off in front of Kate Winslet, and shared an 'intimate moment' with Oliver Reed in Gladiator.
Full of the warmth and intelligence that makes Omid such a successful comedian and sought-after actor, this memoir takes us on a joyously vivid journey through an unusually British life.
    Members Reviews:
    Amazing
This book exceeded my expectations. I purchased it thinking it might be a light comedy about his life an a second-generation Persian immigrant, however i got much more.
    A comedian's comedian
Would you listen to Hopeful again? Why?
Yes, most certainly. Omid Djalili spins a tale like no other. Down to Earth, an hint of crazy, lots of humor and of course, honesty. One listening will not be enough.
The choice of Omid doing the narration is a true gem of a decision. I have admired this man's humor for many years and no one but him could do himself justice. You can picture Omid in the Studio having fun narrating this book.
Have you listened to any of Omid Djalilis other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have his other two books and enjoy them immensely.
    Any additional comments?
I have to say, in today's age there are jokes that would be considered wrong if said by any other person but Omid somehow gets away with it and makes us laugh doing it.
I find Omid a great comedian, I adore everything he does. He is able to, in this day of (as I see it) too much political correctness say what he does in a manner we just love, yet potentially said by others could be seen as racist, derogatory and offensive. Somehow Omid gets away with it - to our enjoyment. An honest comedian.
Well done Omid a fine book, a fine narration. And made a few travels on Public Transportation a lot more fun for me.
Very honest and down to earth.
Really enjoyed this audiobook. An interesting character. And nice he was telling his own story.
    Just brilliant!
From beginning to the end I was captivated by this very funny, interesting and just a bloody nice bloke!
Beautiful read but a bit all over the place
Read with integrity, humour and pace it was an enjoyable listen.

    Publisher's Summary:
One winter's night in 1976, over 20 million people in Britain watched John Curry skate to Olympic glory on an ice rink in Austria. Many millions more watched around the world. Overnight he became one of the most famous men on the planet. He was awarded the OBE. He was chosen as BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Curry had changed ice skating from marginal sport to high art. And yet the man was - and would always remain - an absolute mystery to a world that had been dazzled by his gift. Surely, men's skating was supposed to be Cossack-muscular, not sensual and ambiguous like this.
Curry himself was an often-tortured man of labyrinthine complexity. For the first time, Alone untangles the extraordinary web of his toxic, troubled, brilliant - and short - life. It is a story of childhood nightmares, furious ambition, sporting genius, lifelong rivalries, homophobia, Cold War politics, financial ruin and deep personal tragedy. Alone reveals the restless, impatient, often dark soul of a man whose words could lacerate, whose skating invariably moved audiences to tears, and who - after succumbing to AIDS, as so many of his fellow artists and friends did - died of a heart attack aged just 44.

So typical of a genius - tragedy and mental illness seem to be a hallmark
An admirer of John Curry for a very long time, I had a feeling I would be depressed if I read this book and I was correct. He was a typical bipolar person before that diagnosis was well known. Isn't it strange that most greatly talented people suffer so much. Having a mother, sister and daughter with various degrees of bipolarity, John's ups and downs are very familiar to me. I even have a touch of it and it can be pure heaven or pure hell. I'm just so thankful he persevered and gave us what he could of his beautiful talent and we can still watch it whenever we want with Youtube.
