Great, Fun Chick-Lit!

After some heavier reading that was great, albeit a tad depressing, it was time for some light fare, and The Hot Flash Club more than delivered! I so enjoyed each of the key characters, their interaction and compassion and acceptance of one another's differences. Nancy Thayer writes with a great sense of humor and candor that had me laughing out load. I became addicted to hanging out with these women, and went on to read the rest of the books in the series (four in total). Naturally, I'd like to see more of this group, but I suspect that Ms. Thayer was ready to move on to new material.

I highly recommend this book to women over 50 who are looking for a great summer read.

This book started off a bit slow but certainly picked up quickly. I had a very hard time putting it down. So much just keeps happening to poor Zoya. You can't help but life this person right from the start. All she achieved with all the obstacles never kept her down great book would highly recommend it

Absolutely thrlling and filled with good , clean drama .

This is my second time reading Zoya and I believe this book is one of Danielle Steel's best yet books filled with the mystery and real - life type stories ,that opens one's eyes towards the struggles of life situations. She highlights intriguing sorrows and the reasons why we should never give up . That is not an option .I Love this book!

This is actually my 4th time to read this story - I have the paperback copy at home and the movie.

This is a classic that I can read over and over.

Wonderful story full of history and suspense - love and heartbreak - and rebirth.

Fleurs de ruine: a compelling meditation on a past tragedy and the nature of memory

"Fleurs de ruine" is one of Patrick Modiano's mid-career novellas, first published in 1991 in France. Like much of his work, the novel deals with recurring obsessions: the years of German occupation during the Second World War and the period immediately after; his Jewish father's collaboration with the Germans; and, above all, the nature of memory and search for identity. In this instance, the narrator's attempt to unravel the truth of a 1933 suicide of a young couple previously unknown to him serves as the connective tissue for addressing these preoccupations..

The novel takes place in a realistically-described Paris, and numerous references to the economic, physical and psychological dislocation suffered by the French mid-century occur. This provides a good sense, especially as one reads more than one book of Modiano's, of what it must have been like for the bourgeoisie to reconstruct their lives in the post-liberation years. Less easy for the reader to patch together is a sense of plot and timing, given the unusual qualities of Modiano's literary style. Both real and fictional characters are featured and actual and imagined events are conflated. Time sequencing is even more difficult, a problem i finally overcame by constructing a chronology. Despite these complexities, I find reading Modiano addictive. His focus on the nature of memory, in particular, leaves me deeply contemplative, grasping at will-o-the-wisp scraps of information to assess my own family's life decades ago.

Good book

I like this guy's writing. Easy to understand for someone learning French.

As a teenager Marianne Stokes had a breakdown when her lover died and her best friend was injured in a car accident. She couldn't deal with her guilt so she fled England. Now a second fatal car accident sends her spiraling out of control and she runs away to the small English village where it all started. Can she come to terms with the past? Marianne is a survivor. I admired her inner strength and her desire to help other lost girls. Echoes of Family is an emotional journey through the hell of mental illness. I couldn't put this book down. It was a revelation. Gabriel, her best friend and confidant, followed his desire and is now a Vicar. When he sees Marianne again, his world shatters, but old habits die hard and he takes care of her. When Jade, Marianne's self-proclaimed baby girl and Darius arrive, the situation becomes incredibly complex. The attraction between Jade and Gabriel grows as they try and help Marianne. Does it stand a chance? Barbara Claypole White has written an intense emotional story that is filled with despair, hope and second chances. As the truth is revealed after three decades, I hoped that there would be acceptance and healing, but I wasn't sure that was possible. Coleen Mario did a wonderful job with her narration. She intensified the emotional element which made me cry. I'm hoping that there will be a second book which continues Jade and Gabriel's story. I need answers.

I can't get enough of this author's work

Another brilliant book by Barbara Claypole White.

Coleen Marlo was excellent in the main character's role.

Marriage, friendship, politics and pessimism

The Hopefuls by Jennifer Close is a novel that follows the lives of Matt and Beth Kelly and their best friends Jimmy and Ash Dillon and other friends through five years of their lives as Matt and Jimmy attempt to solidify their political careers and ambitions, and Beth struggles with learning to accept people for what they are and not see the world as revolving around her. It is a rather one-dimensional, slightly homophobic portrayal of marriage, friendship and American politics. Although set in the immediate past, during the first term of Barack Obama as president, it is populated overwhelmingly by white characters, and doesnât really get into the substance of the politics of the time. In addition, its somber, pessimistic tone is at odds with the title.

A great listen

Really enjoyed this one. Along the lines of The Streets of London but set in Durban in South Africa. I don't know much about the country and the book gives a good sense of place. A very different dog companion to the loveable Irish Wolfhound in the Iron Druid books but he grew on me hugely. Exciting story and sets the scene for the next book. Looking forward to it.

enthralling!

this audio book was really good, one of very few I actually wanted to get to the end of just to find out what happens. an original idea, delivered with passion and at the right pace... Would I listen to another book by this author? absolutely!

Thriller tedium

I thought the performance was brilliant--the voices and tone were brilliant and it was almost enough to save the book, but not quite.

There are few books I find that I've gotten so bored with that I can't actually wait until it's over; sadly this was one of them. I was hoping for a more nuanced mystery with magic thrown in; instead this delivered a loosely held together thriller that wasn't really that thrilling. It did have some moments--the exposition on religion was actually quite interesting. I found the characters unsympathetic and found myself getting bored as they were thrown in a seemingly endless series of life-threatening and yawn-inducing situations.

Very entertaining

Like other reviewers I felt this was very similar to the Rivers of London books but with more swearing and violence.

The narration was excellent and I really hope there will be a sequel

This novel really hits home being a Afghanistan veteran and seeing a lot of truth in this day to day military and relating to it, from the standpoint of coming home from a deployment seeing friends going into depression going on leave and not fitting in anywhere you look showing the touchy subject of ptsd the elephant in the room that no one ever wants to admit or seek help before its too late. highly recommended to anyone and everyone

As the wife of a Marine who was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, this book really helped me understand and connect to my husband in a new way. Of course you can talk about being in the Marines and being deployed, but seeing his experience reflected in this book was huge for both of us. Sounds cheesy, but it gave me some new perspective and some new insight. He loves this book so much, and we got the hard copy after listening and have been passing it around to his family ever since we got it....a bit graphic for the parents but hey, that's part of the point. (The hard copy is a graphic novel (and is AMAZING), but the audiobook it AWESOME too!)

No joke, everyone who knows a modern-era Marines veteran should read this.
