Amazing

Unbelievably compelling debut novel. Read it with my book club and we were all blown away and ended up having a great meeting. My only criticism, and it is small, is that the narrator should have had a southern accent.

'I dreamt I held you in my arms...'

Another debut novel, and my faith in new authors continues to brighten -- and I say that after(struggling) listening to a story, that was somber from the opening sentence and weighed on me with almost every page. Therefore, I've given a lot of thought about how to approach this review without discouraging a possible reader. What sustains me through a read as difficult as this was is not only a strong story, writing and characters -- all those necessary elements Walsh does keenly -- it's the take away, the message, the lesson, and, while more nuanced than Aesop's moral, the no less present, moral of the story. My Sunshine Away is a story with a very nuanced message, or moral, that is especially relevant and necessary, handled with kid-soft gloves, (you can only see once you look back over what you just read).

Walsh skillfully sets up the listener at the very beginning with the assault, then gorges them with emotions by having you believe the story is being told directly to you by this 15 yr. old neighbor boy considered a suspect. In addition to the opening offense, it may be difficult to hear what teenage boys do behind locked bathroom doors, so bluntly. You'll wonder if the revelation of those raging hormones is necessary...it is to the narrator. Considered a suspect, his story feels confessional, both pleading his case and clearing his conscience.

The rape brings the real and gritty world crashing into the unspoiled neighborhood. Walsh creates a community of children suddenly stripped of their innocence and thrust into the darkest aspects of adulthood.

Nice stories, suboptimal narration

These r lovely stories but I will read them old fashioned way. Narration was uber-annoying. Possibly sound quality but voice sounded like a robot, almost computer generated. Not a good audio experience. Too bad.

Better of read

I love short stories. This was my first experience listening to them rather than reading them and I don't believe I'll try it again. Perhaps it was just the narration, but I couldn't tell where one story ended and the next began. I stopped listening about an hour in--couldn't get into it at all.

Cute. Not too much romance. Teen-agey genre.

Overall it was good with a few twists. The beginning was a little choppy while setting the plot. I think I liked her other series a little better at this point. It was pretty mellow for the romance section and probably more suited to teenagers. The narrator was fine, no complaints.

Great Story, one small issue.

I really enjoyed the story except for one part that was more about the narration. I thought the narrator made every male character sound like an emotionless jerk. At first, I thought this may have been the authors intent, but it became clear fairly quickly to me that it wasn't.

Once I looked past that, I thought the story was original and quite fun.

A good story ... Just not riveting all the time.

Narrator was fine. Story was good. Just had no trouble stopping and then continuing at a convenient time. Unlike those that you walk around the house listening to. The characters were good, very believable.

Shanna Swendson has done it again!

Love it. Not predictable at all. I enjoyed the nontraditional rolls in this story. The sister relationship between the main characters play out into something totally off the charts. Not once did either of them cry out for a prince charming to rescue them. I love every part of the story except the part where I no longer had another page.

Loved it!

A fresh addition to the stories of the Fae. I like that it's light and full of adventure. This book also has my all-time favorite "wake the damsel" kiss!

The narrator does an excellent job. After each listening session I found myself hearing "Sophie's" voice in my head as I'd read other things. Very well done.

Worth it for the opening line alone

"It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me." So begins Earthly Powers by Anthony Burgess. This line alone should be enough for most to decide if this book is for them or not. Burgess was a fan of James Joyce and a lover of words for their own sake as well as a means to tell a story. It portrays the life and times of Kenneth Toomey a gay writer across the span of the 20th century. It is a huge novel with many themes including the experience of being gay in that century particularly as a believer and how it changed over time, the problem of evil, the role of the catholic church. It requires a big investment of time and concentration but is well worth it. It is both funny and tragic and filled with vivid characters. If nothing else, you will join the ranks of those who can quote the opening line by heart.

I didn't think anything could live up to the book.

What did you love best about Earthly Powers?

The story is incredible--the type of novel you live with for days/weeks, then want to call people with updates when it's over--only to remember that it was just you and the book. An Anthony Burgess masterpiece that's woefully unknown in the US. I didn't think any narration could do it justice, but Gordon Griffin not only meets but dramatically exceeds all expectations. I could not recommend this more.

What other book might you compare Earthly Powers to and why?

Almost impossible to compare it to anything. Your favorite Anthony Burgess novel. Your favorite movie. That television series to which you've become hopelessly addicted. Triple all my fawning adulation if you happen to be a fan of language.

Have you listened to any of Gordon Griffins other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't, and am combing his works to find something I might like, just to experience him some more.

Can't beat that beginning sentence.

Powerful and nuanced, a deep dive into important questions

I agree with reviewers who liken this novel to Delillo's Underground and other monumental reflections on life and particularly modern, global life. I will certainly reflect on this book for a long time. I found the narrator enjoyable when reading Caucasian male voices, especially British ones, but extremely off-putting when taking on the voice of a woman or non-Caucasian man. Nonetheless, a very worthy investment of time.

A pure delight from start to finish.

Cathie Pelletier is a master storyteller. From the first page, she lifted me out of the Deep South and plunked me down in the middle of Mattagash, Maine. And I felt right at home. I wanted to suggest to Edna that we take art lessons together; I wanted to catch Florence putting out the latest word with its definition; I wanted to sit and have coffee with the gang at Blanche's; I wanted to put a "Thinking of you" note in Harry's moose mailbox during the worst of his nightmares from war time spent in the jungles of Vietnam; I wanted to yank Meg away from the computer and tell her to please put on her apron for Orville. As for Billy, oh how I wanted to roar down the road in his Mustang, freezing my tail off but warm in my heart because Bullet was sitting between us, his ears flapping in the wind and a happy grin on his face. This is a book I will read again, just like I did the other "Mattagash" books. And again, I won't want it to end.

Wonderful Story

I love Cathie Pelletier's books and have been waiting for a new one for a long time. I wasn't disappointed. A great story, written in her style which appeals to me significantly. The personalities of the characters in this book are warm and real for me. Enjoy!

Loved the story

Loved the story! made me think of the movie Grumpy Old Men as I finished it. The characters are lively and unforgettable. Sad to finish it because I loved these characters so much.

The book was an ex-library addition, I don't remember this being noted by the seller. However, it was in good condition.

A bore

This book was a little outside of my literary comfort zone. I had never heard of Cathie Pelletier and it seems like this would be something my parents would read. (I'm a mom to young kids). But, I saw it had some shiny reviews and Wally Lamb said she was his favorite author which sold me (though I didn't like his books either, maybe that should have discouraged me). Anyway, I was curious to read about a strange-to-me place like the woods of Northern Maine.

Took a chance

Glad I took a chance on this book. I kept seeing this book listed but it never showed any reviews. Since I love reading about other cultures I decided to take a chance and it really was quite decent. Although it is a collection of stories all with a common theme each story is different and explores the subject...arranged marriage, in different ways...they are not predictable. The rich character development, the descriptive details and the perfect narrator made this book enjoyable,

engaging stories. narrated well. recommended.

the stories are very simple, real and everyday-like. Narration could've been better though. I recommend the book to one and all. looking forward to other books by Chitra Banerjee Diwakaruni.

LOVE this and narrator did a good job

Aiden thinks hes a loser. Hes an ex-con on parole ,working at a nothing job, his last chance before being sent back to prison for life. Hes got a GED but nothing else. No money, no friends, nothing much to do. Until he meets Luka.

Luka is the new security guard at Aidens work and every night, during Aidens dinner break, Luka gives Aiden a BJ! He never seeks reciprocity and refuses to see Aiden in daylight hours. Sure they enjoy some lovely conversation as well, but most of their relationship is confined to these encounters.

At first Aiden goes with the flow, enjoying the benefits of Lukas peculiar form of contact, but then he begins to get attached, and his feelings get hurt.

To make himself a better man (and to distract himself from Luka), Aiden joins a book club, considers going to community college and starts to think about the future. Where does Luka fit in to his new life plan?

Eventually, Luka has to tell his secrets and Aiden has to decide if his monsters can co-exist with Lukas.

This is a short, sweet love story. Both Aiden and Luka are so alone and so troubled. The secret is pretty easy to figure out, its not meant to be a great mystery, but I liked how it gets divulged and this is a unique take on the vampire theme.

I really felt like Luka and Aiden had a chance at making a go of things, and I wished the book had continued on- maybe another chapter or two at least to give us a picture of the two of them together, as a couple, with no secrets.

This was a great, unique, vampire story and I highly recommend it, giving it a 4.5 of 5 stars, dropping it down from 5 only because it was too short.

Audio:

Max Lehnen did a good job with this. His accent for Luka was good (I wished it were a little more pronounced) but the vaguely European accent he used matched what I imagined Luka having.

The sound quality and editing was good as well.

I give it a 4 of 5 stars.

Overall Id give it a 4.25 of 5 stars (rounded back to 4.5 to keep things easy).

Hilarious and wise

Such a wonderful story, made me laugh out loud while walking!!!! And such wise phrases, on life, growing old, and friendship.

Loved it!!!!

I just chose the book to practise some French. The surprise has been quite big. The story is touching and very funny. The reader superb. The characters are tender and quite well played. It is a book that leaves you with a smile in your face all along the reading.

Sympathique

J'ai bien aimé. C'est une histoire qui se laisse bien lire (ou écouter). Le conteur arrive à donner vie aux différents personnages. En revanche, j'ai été dérangé par le sexisme et l'hétéro-centrisme des personnages, qui semble refléter la même chose chez l'auteur.

Learning to forgive..

This was a great listen. For anyone that struggles with forgivness or even guilt this book is a must hear.

11 hour bible study

Decent plot, missed opportunity with execution, no character development, the story is extremely wordy and lulls in places. This was truly a bible study lesson & showcased how you can the bible can be used to badger you into being compliant.

Random observations

6/16/18-In this installment it's been 18 years since Scandalous, Jasmine is in her 40s and I have no idea who she is...She has done a complete 180 from the person who was presented in Scandalous. I take that back, she was shallow, materialistic, narcissistic & selfish, but not treacherous on the level that has been displayed in this story. I'm curious as to how this 40 yr old Jasmine became who she is? It could not have been from the 18yrs of unfulfilled marriage and being the cause of a stalkers death (scandalous) I'm hoping this will be explained at some point.

Kyla while perky, loyal with an air of determination in Scandalous -at 40 in this installment - she is naive as a 20 year old? I found that hard to believe. She made several naive statements i.e. if he loved me he couldn't be in bed with another woman. I think any woman in her 40s knows that sex and love are not dependent on each other. Her dialogue is unnecessarily repetitive. I didn't get the impression that she could not think or make decisions for herself, but that was who she was in this book.

Alexis was rigid , close minded & very unlikeable.

The push for immediate forgiveness was a bit much. The victim in this story was badgered into submission. You almost felt sorry for her. In 24 hours, she was expected to find her best friend in bed with her husband, accept it, forgive, forget and move on and be a dutiful wife. There is forgiveness and then there was this story. It didn't leave me with a good feeling about the overall message.

Marriage can be good

Would you consider the audio edition of Temptation to be better than the print version?

I did not get the print version but I imagine the audio would be better. The dialogue was really good so the audio version brings the characters to life.

Would you be willing to try another book from Victoria Christopher Murray? Why or why not?

I would read more stories by this author. The characters were relatable and simply human. Murray describes each character's emotions well and draws you in to them. You sympathize with all of them equally.

What aspect of Caroline Clays performance would you have changed?

Clay's performance was fantastic.

Unlike some other reviewers, I think the narrator did a very fine job. I enjoyed her reading, characterizations, and she has a lovely voice. Having read the book already, I knew the plot, but nevertheless I was kept engaged by the wonderful dialogue.Thank goodness Heyer's mysteries are being made available in unabridged audiobooks!

A Fun Story!

The story was incredibly fun with ancient houses, secret passages, and interesting characters. Ulli Birve did a fine job with the narration. After I listened to Why Shoot a Butler, I was reluctant to listen to Ulli Birve narrarate another Georgette Heyer novel. But the last two novels I have listened to with Birve as narrator have been very good.

Narration is almost laughable

Cute story. Too bad a better narrator cannot be found. One just has to remember that what sounds like a girl is supposed to be a man.

Footsteps

The story moves very slowly but stay with it until the end it is worth it. Someone is trying to make the new owners of the priory sell or leave the property by scarring them off.

Thrilling

I love using audible to accompany my read while I drive, work out, cook. The reader has a good voice for the book.
