Another lovely visit with Mma Ramotswe

I know these books are so cozy you could put a crocheted blankie on them and call them Grandma, but I love them deeply and truly. Like all in the series, this book is beautifully written, spare but eloquent, wise and charming. The plot is inconsequential, really - what remains with you is the characters, who are like old friends (including their quirks and flaws) and the satisfaction of justice achieved. And Adjoa Andoh is a wonderful narrator. Every character is given their full due, and she brings to the story all the warmth of Botswana. Buy this audiobook and then save it for the perfect afternoon to curl up and enjoy with a cup of tea and the cat on your lap.

What made the experience of listening to The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon the most enjoyable?

Another trip to Botswana to revisit Mma Ramotswe and others in Alexander McCall's series of stories. As always, the rich storyline and insightful characters instantly transport you to another world. Sheer escapsim and very enjoyable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I have two in particular: Mma Makutsi for her outspoken remarks which are not very diplomatic but are often comical and usually go straight to the heart of the matter. Also Mma Potokwani the head of the orphanage, who is a very strong character and can always be relied on for help and advice (usually with excellent fruit cake)

What does Adjoa Andoh bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

The story is read in an accent natural to southern Africa which adds to the feeling of actually being with the characters in Botswana.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part when Mma Ramotswe offers Mma Makutsi a partnership in the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Love this author...

I'm in love with Ernessa as an author. She made me LOL in 32 Candles and literally cry, laugh and shake my head in this choice. You will love her writing if you want to be entertained and touched by a message all at once. I forced myself to stretch this book out over 3 days because Amazon credit prices are sky high lol. But I would have finished in one day's sitting, easily.

I fell in love with all of the characters. I'm a reader for life. this was a great story line and i love the messages in between the chapters.

Once again, Ernessa Carter has spun what seemed to be a "how to get a man guide" to an insightful, bold tale of relationships: girlfriends, daddy/momma/daughter, men, self. At first listen, I was tempted to confuse this book with the shallow urban black literature (all Black lit ain't created equal)-young women struggling with careers while tryna' look good and bandage all the bad feelings with a man, any man, wondering why "a good black man is hard to find" ignoring the lowest common denominator (namely, she!), but I degress... This is NOT that story. Ernessa Carter digs into the complexities of relationship dynamics (across the board) in an honest and clever way leaving us once again with the awesome charge of being authentically and wonderfully ourselves. She invites us to risk, share, love and learn in our journey to become our better selves and along the way, there's a chuckle but mostly an "ahhh haa".

Well done my dear sister, I look forward to more of your tales SOON!

A great read after reading 32 Candles. I loved the correlation between the characters in both books. The story took a while to pick up but when it did I was hooked. I really enjoy this author and look forward to more of her stories.

Could this have been me?

If you could sum up Just What Kind of Mother are You? in three words, what would they be?

The three words I would use to describe this book are;

1. -thought provoking ( counting this as one :-)

2. -interesting

3. -drawn out ( in the beginning)

If you could rename Just What Kind of Mother are You?, what would you call it?

The title is perfect! It's eye catching, true to the story. Over all just a great name that reflects every parent that self evaluates and observes others, at one time or another, in whIch I think most of us do.

Any additional comments?

This was a good book and worth the credit. The english accent was not too pronounced and did not interfere with comprehension. It's about a few families and the ups and downs we all experience. One mothers, that is really hard on herself, realizes that some peoples/family go through a great deal to hide their secrets and how deceptive appearances can be.

Most of those "perfect" people/families by appearance are a facade. Sometime their issues use others that are not so savvy in the game to keep it all glued to together. In some cases that glue doesn't stick as well as expected and may expose deep, hidden, embarrassing, ugly information that would turn their families inside out. While it opens the eyes of naïve family's/people that try to "keep up with the Jones's" in a financial organizational and domestic way. I found it difficult to put down.

The Villain was a surprise but there weren't many characters to choose from to keep you guessing. I think, if it it were a little more suspenseful, and didn't drag on in the beginning, I would have given it 5 stars.

I don't really know. It was something of a thriller, a little predictable but still a really good story. Funny in places, touching in others.

Yes. It was really engaging and because of the narrator I felt like I was listening to a movie. Very good job.

Breathes new life

This is another delectable treat from a proven, master of character development and story telling. I am so amazed that every novel that I read by Chris Bohjalian is a new and fresh treatment of his chosen topic. The Light in the Ruins does not disappoint as it breathes new life into a story of the travesties of war, the aftermath, and human touch that comes through.

The two narrators in this Audiobook edition added to the whole experience with clarity and timing.

Suspenseful but a very sad story

What did you love best about The Light in the Ruins?

The way the story was told, it kept me guessing until the end of the book.

It wasn't who I thought if would be.

Narration is grindingly distracting.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cassandra Campbell and Mark Bramhall ?

Anyone with a voice ranger over approximately 1.5 octaves, who would therefore not have had to resort to "tricks" to create different voices. Helium inhaled falsetto for a child and other characters. 2nd soprano male voices because the reader can't dip any lower than the tone of the non-dialog text.

To Every Season...

I loved this story!! I can so relate to the struggles, hardships, and joy described in the pages of Michael Thomas Ford's 'Full Story'. Though I am not as old as the characters of our protagonists, Ned & Jack, many of the paths described within the pages resonate within and brought forth a plethora of memories of my own forgotten past. Initially, I thought I would resent that remembrance, but I must admit that I am thankful. This is the second book written by Ford that I have read and I can assuredly admit that I am now a huge fan. The narration of Blake Somerset, brought the characters to life and I am glad that I was able to share in the telling of such a reminiscent tale! Highly recommend!!!

A Great Story Of Love Loss And Gay Service Members

Mr. Ford amazing from childhood friends to adult lovers and finally adult companions. All set in Vietnam war time and realistic in its depiction of gay service members pre-don't ask don't tell. Love lost acceptance. Great Listen.

Michael Thomas Ford at his best

Reading the synopsis I wasn't immediately drawn to this book. Instead I found a well written exploration of a life long friendship. Loved it - I was wrapped up in the story from the first moment.

I remember liking his style when I was in my twenties but now that I'm in my forties I find the main protagonist pretentious and judgmental.

When I started listening to this book, I couldn't stand it. I almost returned it, on the advice of my friend (who loved the book) I stuck with it. I'm so glad that I did! It's a charming story!

This book was a selection by my non smut book club. I am giving this book 3.5 stars not because it's a bad book but because had I to actually read it instead of listened to it I surely would not have been interested enough to complete the book.

I really liked the concept of the book and most of the characters. The main character (Don) was endearingly funny to me and I loved the interaction between himself and Rosie. I found the story to be a little predictable and thus did not compel me to become addicted to it as I would require from a 4/5 star book.

Don was certainly the most memorable character. His thought processes were hysterical!
