'The King of Crime' wrote an astonishing number of crime and mystery books, selling more than 80 million copies worldwide in 28 languages over five decades. Story good as usual, narration a bit lacking...
...this time. Kermode is usually fairly decent when it comes to reading this series, but an American accent is not something he's good at imitating. I like most of the series; this isn't a stand-out but it's not bad at all.

    Title: Artful
    Author: Ali Smith
    Narrator: Ali Smith

Length: 4 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-02-13
    Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The downloadable, digital audiobook edition of Ali Smiths remarkable exploration of love, life and death, read by the author herself.
Originally four lectures given by Ali Smith at Oxford University, Artful is a tidal wave of ideas in four thematically organised bursts of thought: On Time, On Form, On Edge and On Offer and On Reflection. Refusing to be tied down to either fiction or the essay form, Artful is narrated by a character who is haunted - literally - by a former lover, the writer of a series of lectures about art and literature. Full of both the poignancy and humour of fiction and all the sideways insights and jaunty angles you would expect from Ali Smiths criticism, it explores form, style, life, love, death, mortality, immortality and what art and writing can mean.
    Members Reviews:
    Initially confusing, ultimately engrossing
Although Artful is based on a series of lectures Ali Smith delivered, listeners should be warned that she includes a back story that positions them more as letters to a recently-deceased lover. For me, this was initially confusing, but once I caught on, I found the book fascinating and often wished I had a pencil and paper handy to jot down some of the many literary and cultural references that intrigued me. I found it an engrossing listen that I felt wasn't long enough. I would seriously consider listening to it again, and I almost *never* do that.
A feast of thought and art
Before this book, I think I have thought academia a waste of time....especially the study of literature and art. This unfurling of thought, infused with the magic of Synchronisity has totally undone my preconceptions.
It will inform my thinking for a long time and I might actually listen to it again...and probably again....it is so rich, I know I've barely touched the surface of it.
Thank you, people who brought this to fruition.
Poignant, erudite and a must listen
What made the experience of listening to Artful the most enjoyable?
Hearing Ali Smith's quiet voice. There is an evocative intimacy in this listening experience which left me stunned sometimes, always better informed and most reluctant to cease listening.
What did you like best about this story?
Being educated about another's life and being made aware of more and even more, in spite of the fact that you are old, is an enormous, irreplaceable gift.
What about Ali Smiths performance did you like?
Listening to a quiet voice full of restrained erudition, and often self deprecating whimsy is a joy.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Certainly one would hope to enjoy this in theory in one sitting but could you cope? Why would this be a measure of "success?" On the contrary, I meted out each part very carefully so it could be understood, enjoyed and to be respected.
    Any additional comments?
Learn something, laugh and probably cry.

Gus Hollister owes all his success to his feisty grandmother, Rose, and he knows it. It was Rose and her two sisters, Iris and Violet, who raised Gus, sent him to the best schools, and helped him start his own accounting business. Rose even bought the house Gus lives in with his wife, Elaine.
But now, Gus stands to lose everything - his home, his car, and his business. Worse, hes alienated his beloved grandma, who tried to warn him about Elaines greedy, gold-digging ways. Heartsick and remorseful, Gus returns to Roses Virginia farmhouse seeking shelter. But it wont be easy to make amends. The Blossom Sisters
Too much bad language and taking the Lord's name in vane. Don't like occult stuff.
Alright book to listen to for free
This book starts out interesting and caught my attention but toward the end the story line was rushed. To start with the title is confusing. The Blossom Sisters are not the main characters their nephew Gus is. I did like the book but it left me feeling like there should be more.
    Very touching and sweet story
Aver sweet story. A lite like a fairy tale and we all need one of those occasionally

A counter-terror operation, codenamed Wildlife, is being mounted in Britains most precious colony, Gibraltar. Its purpose: to capture and abduct a high-value jihadist arms-buyer. Its authors: an ambitious Foreign Office Minister, and a private defence contractor who is also his close friend. So delicate is the operation that even the Ministers Private Secretary, Toby Bell, is not cleared for it. Suspecting a disastrous conspiracy, Toby attempts to forestall it, but is promptly posted overseas.
Three years on, summoned by Sir Christopher Probyn, retired British diplomat, to his decaying Cornish manor house, and closely watched by Probyns daughter Emily, Toby must choose between his conscience and his duty to the Service. If the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing, how can he keep silent?

"One of those writers who will be read a century from now" (Robert Harris)
    Members Reviews:
    You will love it !
This novel is not strictly in Le Carre's usual genre of the spy novel but it has the pace and mystery and well written characteristics of his other novels. What sets this one apart is Le Carre's interpretation / reading of his own characters..He really brings them all to life and gets the accents and manerisms just down pat, to the extent that I could easily visualize each and every one of them and felt I knew them all intimately. Obviously he has an advantage in narrating his own work but I would still rate this the best narration of any book I have yet listened to. Somehow his writing has become more subtle and sophisticated with amusing nuances or perhaps it is his interpretation of his material that makes this a truly a great listen. Great story as well.
    Not My Favourite
I have read all le Carre's earlier books but this was not what I expected. The plot was weak and the character development poor. That said there was still the mystery and intrigue of old but this will be the last of his books that I read.
    Excellent
Would you listen to A Delicate Truth again? Why?
    Yes
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Emily Probyn,
Have you listened to any of John le Carrés other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes I have, a great performance by John
If you could take any character from A Delicate Truth out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    Giles Oakley, intriguing tales
    Any additional comments?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a great listen.
    grate story
there was a problem with the sound at the beginning, sorted out after a while
    Good crisp engaging listen.
Narrator was excellent. Provides insights into the privatisation of war. Voice modulation during narration was a welcome change.

    a masterpiece, un capolavoro
the text's musicality took my psyche by it's telomeres and waltzed us through one perspective of Portugal in 1938. In my total ignorance I had had no idea where the story would take me. I smelled the Atlantic sea air, felt the urgency of modernity's clashing as it pushed against cultural 'indolence' or maybe incredulity. "... sostiene Pereira... " becomes a refrain, reframe... What an amazing experience.
    Great novel clearly read.
Been studying this book (in Italian) in literature group. Decided to give audiobook a go, too - learn as you move, or go to sleep at night. Thought it might be too challenging to follow aurally, so got English language version first, but sample audio persuaded me to go for Italian, too, and it is better. Obviously this isn't because setting is Italian; it's set in Lisbon. The novel itself, however you approach it, is a jewel.

    Publisher's Summary:
Its not even a clue. Its a whisper, a trace, a ghost echo, drifting down through the decades via chance connections so fragile that they would disintegrate in the puff of a breath. But its enough to get legendary former Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger interested in the events of November 22, 1963, and the third bullet that so decisively ended the life of John F. Kennedy and set the stage for one of the most enduring controversies of our time.
Swagger begins his slow night stalk through a much-traveled landscape. But hes asking questions that few have asked before: Why did the third bullet explode? Why did Lee Harvey Oswald, about to become the most hunted man on earth, risk it all by returning to his rooming house to secure a pistol he easily could have brought with him? How could a conspiracy that went un-penetrated for fifty years have been thrown together in the two and a half days between the announcement of the presidents route and the assassination itself?
As Bob investigates, another voice enters the narrative: knowing, ironic, almost familiar, that of a gifted, Yale-educated veteran of the CIA Plans Division. Hugh Meachum has secrets and the means and the will to keep them buried. When weighed against his own legacy, Swaggers life is an insignificant expense - but to blunt the threat, hell first have to ambush the sniper.
As each man hunts the other across todays globe and through the thickets of history, The Third Bullet builds to an explosive climax that will finally prove what Bob Lee Swagger has always known: its never too late for justice.

Swager dives into the JFK assassination head first
As Stephen Hunter's Bobby Lee Swagger is getting on into the Metamucil and Medicare phase of his life, the focus of his escapades have been nudged ever so slightly to the cerebral and away from action. In this installment, Swagger is injected into the never ending JFK assassination conspiracy theory parallel universe that operates with its own unique brand of physics. Swagger is dragged into this mess while investigating the killing of an author researching JFK. As Swagger enters the fray with his Columbo style detective work, it becomes apparent that someone is quietly watching everything and intervening when anyone looks close to connecting the right dots. With minimal backup from official law enforcement and assistance from peripheral players, Swagger is able to flush out the original mastermind.
The tale is related as two stories, Swagger's detective efforts and the diary entries of the 1963 mastermind who engineered the hit on JFK. Hunter has crafted a well designed theory that is consistent with the official Warren report as well as interweaving odd, ancillary clues. Unfortunately, the detective work offers little in the way of good tradecraft and is more dependent on Swagger's insight and epiphanies. The actual gunfights are well rendered, but few and far between. The diary of the mastermind is largely the embellished rantings of an over the top narcissist with a flare for British dandiness, that puts a drag on plot development, slows the pace, and lengthens the story considerably.
There's a James Bond / Spectre quality where unbeknownst to Swagger, he has been in the mastermind's sights ever since beating him to the punch of securing a special Russian weapon back in the Vietnam era.

    Members Reviews:
    Okay; but.
Taking a lot of tired cliches and wrapping them around a lesbian character doesn't make the cliches any fresher. That being said there are moments of semi-brilliance when the author is able to bring the characters to life. Unfortunately these moments are interspersed with a predictable plot line and some dialogue worthy of network television. The overall book has it's moments and the information on the criminal aspects of the plot are good. Hopefully in the future there will be a time when her main characters actually appear three dimensional. As for the reader; the same applies to her. She has a good overall pacing and at times, the right tone. Other times she seems to think her audience is a class of fifth graders.
    A Romantic Lesbian Thriller
In this follow-up to Rainey Days, FBI special agent behavioral specialist, Rainey Bell has been called in to help solve a series of violent crimes against young women. This time, there's so much more at stake because she now has a family to protect (as well as one who's reluctnant to compromise!)
Mixed into this smart puzzle is brutal violence, yes, but also a sexy romance.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this.
    Great story, awesome characters!
Would you consider the audio edition of Rainey Nights to be better than the print version?
I would not consider the audio version better, just less work for my brain. I can run and have the story with me without having to really think.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I love Katie, she makes me laugh.
What about Shannon McManuss performance did you like?
I think she did an awesome job on the voice characterization. There were a couple of places where it was a little slow, but that's due to me having read the book several times and heard it differently in my head. Overall she did a great job.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not really, but I have read it several times before listening to it. So I was prepared for what was coming. I did laugh at the funny parts.
    Any additional comments?
I want MORE! Please get all of the Rainey Bell series, as well as all of R. E. Bradshaw's works. I will buy all of them.

    Publisher's Summary:
At Logos College in West Texas, huge young men, vacuum-packed into shoulder pads and shiny helmets, play football with intense passion. During an uncharacteristic winning season, the perplexed and distracted running back Gary Harkness has periodic fits of nuclear glee; he is fueled and shielded by his fear of and fascination with nuclear conflict. Among oddly afflicted and recognizable players, the terminologies of football and nuclear war - the language of end zones - become interchangeable, and their meaning deteriorates as the collegiate year runs its course. In this triumphantly funny, deeply searching novel, Don DeLillo explores the metaphor of football as war with rich, original zeal.
    Members Reviews:
"It's only a game, but it's the only game."
Gary Harkness was a standout New York State high school football player living his father's dream until he squandered full scholarships at big football universities like Penn State and ended up as one of the "outcasts or exiles" on the unknown team of Logos College in the neglected West Texas desert. Gary is the teams starting full back. Introducing himself, he says, "Football players are simple folk. Whatever complexities, whatever dark politics of the human mind, the heart--these are noted only within the chalked borders of the playing field. At times strange visions ripple across that turf; madness leaks out. But wherever else he goes, the football player travels the straightest of lines. His thoughts are wholesomely commonplace, his actions uncomplicated by history, enigma, holocaust or dream." Perhaps he protests too much. Anyone who says something like "We were in the middle of the middle of nowhere, that terrain so flat and bare, suggestive of the end of recorded time, a splendid sense of remoteness firing my soul" is anything but simple. And despite his love of football (practicing, playing, sweating, hitting, hurting, fighting, bonding), he may be too drawn to the desert, too disturbed by silence, too thoughtful and idiosyncratic to confine himself for long to chalked borders and straight lines. Will he sabotage his football career a final time?
Also starting over at Logos is the new head coach, Emmett Creed, a two-time national champion who has been in scandalous exile after breaking the jaw of a back-up quarterback. Creed, "a land-locked Ahab who paced and raged," "part Satan, part Saint Francis," "a warlock and avenging patriarch," keeps a painting of Saint Teresa of Avila (who ate her food out of a human skull) and is determined to teach his players all about pain and sacrifice and character. He's also changed the team name from the Desert Wrens to the Screaming Eagles and gotten from Columbia Taft Robinson, a gifted and speedy running back--the first black student to attend Logos.
Don DeLillo's second novel End Zone (1972), then, is Gary's first person account of a season of football at Logos, but in addition to depictions of coaches, players, practices, and a climactic game, it's about much more than football. Logos means the Word of God, or the principle of reason.

    Gave Me Shivers!
What made the experience of listening to Shiver the most enjoyable?
The tension between Sam and Danny really kept me going. It is obvious from the very beginning that there is something there, but it kept you on the edge of your seat just waiting for something to happen between the two of them. I had listened to the sneak peaks audible released...and they kept releasing another chapter from week to week, until finally I had to buy it because I was hooked! I ended up finishing this book in one day!
Who was your favorite character and why?
I would have to say Sam was my favorite. She just continues to surprise you throughout the story while you learn her history and everything she has been through and goes through in this book. A really great character!
What about Shannon McManuss performance did you like?
I think this is the first time I have heard her before, and I thought she did a good job! She has a good voice and acts out the characters well, allowing you to understand who is who.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not one specifically. There were quite a few intense moments...not to give anything away. ;)
    Any additional comments?
Overall a great story...with a twist at the end that I honestly didn't see coming! Worth the credit!
    It was good, but
I expected more from this book. I was slightly disapointed mostly because i thought this book was going to be a thriller not a romance novel. However, I have to admit It was entertaining. The author did a great job and for the first time in who knows how long I was able to read (listen) to a book that really kept me guessing. This is a book tht i will be listening to again.
    Really Entertaining.....
I downloaded the free first 2 chapters because I wasn't sure this would be a story I would like. I LOVE Sam; she is a gutsy, loving, mother and she starred in this show. The storyline was so well done. I loved the dialog. I am so impressed when an author can bring you into a story so you are experiencing it as is unfolding.

    Warm, Fuzzy, Irish

    I love Maeve Binchy
Once again, I've said it a million times, I felt like I was sitting at the table enjoying a cup of tea as a tale was spun about regular everyday people around me. Caroline Lennon is one of my all time favourite narrators so that is a bonus. The only reason my story review got 4 stars was because all of the characters in the novel experienced consequences for actions and dealt with the aftermath except the main character. I felt robbed that her story didn't come to light. It made it tough for me to respect her as a person - her secret was a giant one but yet she was quite content to deceive. Maybe it is just me and my belief that people are inherently honest. I couldn't deal with the guilt if it were me.
    Great listen.
    A warm, loving, positive novel
Maeve Binchy was a much loved Irish writer and A Week in Winter is her last novel. I really enjoyed it. I felt it was a testament to a life well lived because she created a warm, loving, positive book.
It's about people experiencing positive changes in their lives -- either through their own decisions, or just through a chain of events. What these people have in common is that they end up at a guest house in a peaceful, beautiful part of rural Ireland -- the establishment of the house itself being a creative optimistic series of decisions
    .
It's about caring, loving, dealing with life events that hold us back.
Am I making it sound like a personal development book! It's far from that. But it does leave the reader with a sense of hope and valuing life options.
I get the feeling that Binchy delighted in creating this little world, so far away from the cares of urban living, and drawing people into it and allowing most of them to leave more content and in touch with themselves.
It was sympathetically read by Caroline Lennon.
    Wonderful as always, Maeve!
What a wonderful story following the lives of various characters who happen to come together in a new guest house.
