Story is great. Gi never fails to excite me in words. This narrator is has an echo to her voice and it's a bit soft and odd. The dream bits echo a lot.

An now we have english accent narrator for Edinburgh

I know they change narrators but the last 3of these have really thrown me and now the narrator is so terribly English it's completely different to all the others and you lose the continuity of voices and personalities of the characters. I adore this series but I do wish they'd keep similar narration as one gets used to the nuances of the characters

Poor quaility recording!

I liked the scottish theme and family life of Isabel but as I have the volume up loud because I am deaf the recording was poor and crackly!

Interesting story.

Alexander McCall Smith is a much loved author.

I need to be careful when writing this review. The storyline was fantastic and written superbly, with a fantastic spin on real life events surrounding a man of genius and supreme intellect. Alan Turing was a genius. Born in 1912 and died in 1954, this was an interesting take on events surrounding his "suicide".

You will notice I haven't given this audiobook a great rating. This is because I felt the narration was extremely poor, and I am sure that is the reason for my not liking it. However, that is not enough for me to slate this book. Especially as the first reviewer, I would feel I am not giving you a clear enough picture. I still recommend people buy and listen to this, maybe you will enjoy it more than I did. Just because I found the narration to be poor that doesn't necessarily mean you will.

Buy it and give it a go. I would rather be honest and paint a clear picture for future listeners rather than lie and say how great I found it just to chase "likes" on my reviews.

Lost in translation?

Great idea but lacked in execution. It felt too crafted but lacked engagement and built little empathy with characters. Worth a read/listen if you're interested in Turing.

david lagercranz is s good sorry teller.

I came to this book because u limed the easy he had written the girl in the spiders Web.tyke subject is tragic and tells us s lot about the prejudice of war torn UK and post war Britain. I like the easy he weaves the story to expose the prejudice whilst exploring the struggles of those who were becoming more enlightened.

Excellent

Two of my favourites: Jeffrey Archer and John Lee. Couldn't ask for more in an audio book. Loved it.

EXACTLY what I wanted

I was in the mood for a sweeping saga, and I knew Jeffery Archer was the perfect author to turn to. It was just the thing for my craving!

You have to know what you are signing up for when you settle into one of his books, there is very little dialogue and so I always feel like I am being told ABOUT a story as opposed to reading a story.. does that make sense?

Some constants about Jeffery Archers style:

Very little dialogue

More telling than showing

Books that feel like a collection of short stories

Somewhat predictable plots

Many similarities to past books

But all this is good because if you know precisely what youre going to get, you wont be disappointed. I was entertained the entire way through!

Twice as good the second time around

I read this book years ago. It was a pleasure hearing it. Narrator John Lee really brought it to life. I've read most of Archer's books, this is one of his best. I promise you'll be hanging on to every word.

Cor blimey, what a great book!

Why did this have to end? Such a good story, great characters and twists and turns.

If you like LONDON or the east end, you will love this story from rags to riches and heartache and pain in between

Great story of two brothers and their fight to regain a long lost relationship

This book tells the story of a rivalry between twin brothers, their bitter estrangement and the accident that left one brother in a coma and the other regretting their past and praying for a doubtful reconciliation.

A very emotional story, absolutely compelling. The dynamics between twin brothers growing up, the completion between them, the conflicts that separate them, and the tragedy that finally brings them together, makes for powerful reading. I really loved this book. I didn't love the narrator, but he was adequate.

A sweet story of brothers

After reading many reviews, I decided to use a credit. At first, I was irritated with my pick, it took some time to get into this, but after a few hours, I found that I did enjoy listening to the complications of this brother bond. In the end, it was worth a credit.

Not my favorite!

I didn't like the narrator, and I really didn't care for the story. It was slow-moving in the beginning and the drama wasn't that good. I expected more because I love the Curtis Black series.

Good but predictable

The story was interesting and kept me entertained but it was predictable. The characters were funny. It was really good.

You don't know what you have until it's gone!

This was a tell the truth and shame the devil book for me! Great narration!

The storyline was fair and predictable. I purchased this book under the category of "Christian Fiction." After listening to the book, the crushing was definitely not Christian! The ending was as expected, no suspense or praises!!

very believable characters

great book and glimpse into the daily lives and struggles of midwives! This is especially true if you understand the importance and relevance midwives play in childbirth! it's important to note that this book takes place today, not in the past! midwives are still very active in the childbirth community! i prefer them to obgyns any day!

room for improvement

The book is probably better read than listened too. the narrator made all the characters in their 30s sound like young teenagers and it was difficult to keep track of which characters she was reading. Overall the book has enough twists to keep it interesting.

such a different read for me....not sure i would have chosen it, but it was for book club. i liked it very much.

Your Average good story to kill time with.

It was a good story, just nothing really remarkable about it. I did find it annoying that the reader read all three parts in the same voice, if you missed hearing the name at the beginning, you had no clue who you were listening to. Btw, while Grace may have had some accent due to her mother's speech, Neva would have no such thing at all being 2nd generation. All in all, it was a disappointment.
