Bite size Nightingale!

I loved this! Although I might be biased as I'm a big fan of the Nightingale series and Paul Thornley as the narrator. I hoped this format of short stories wouldn't disappoint and it didn't. The stories work so well in shorter format, the length of each one was just right (approx 1.5 hours per story). Each one was long enough to capture everything the full books do. Familiar characters return too, which is very nice.

It might be better to have listened to another book in the series before, however it's not crucial. If this is your first, I have a feeling it will just wet your appetite for more of Nightingale's demonic adventures. I would recommend this book either way. I'll definitely be listening to it again very soon.

Another brilliant "Jack Nightingale" Book

Just when i thought there would be no more Jack Nightingale books this one has come out.

I was a bit doubtfull at first, i like long books being retired, & short stories, not sure.......

But i was wrong, could not put it down, Stories very good & Paul Thornley with his different voices & emphasis is excellent, i just hope we get more from them.

Would recommend the whole series, Wife enjoys them too.

An excellent book!

A smoothly flowing and slightly unnerving story. I would recommend it for fans of ufo fuction. Mr. Gonzalez is one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend that you read some of his works!

A well written, engaging short story of the last three years of the life of Jonathan Brown. It is, simultaneously, amusing, sad and creepy. The audio version is read by Andre Gonzalez, who does an adequate job but, unfortunately, has a nasal twang to his voice plus his intonation towards the end of most sentences, irritatingly rises or falls, giving a robotic impression. This vocal distraction made it hard for me to simply sink into the story and so lowered the rating.

Probably best to read rather than listen.

Great Rainy Night Story.

I read this book in less than three hours. It was a great read. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one in the series, which I already have through Kindle Unlimited.

The author is a great storyteller. The character of Rachel is well developed and I like her immensely. I'm still vetting to know the husband, Brett, and her father, Liam.

The story needs some edits. As an editor, it can be hard to read a story without editing in my head, Burr that was not the case here. While it does need edits, there was nothing severe enough to detract from the story. If you like haunted houses, ghosts, and people who can see them, then thus would be a good book for you to read.

Interesting story hampered by bad writing

This novel offers some interesting angles on the age-old premise of the dead haunting the living in order to get justice. The North Carolina setting is compelling, and having Rachel be an artist has great potential. How can her art help her communicate with the dead? Unfortunately, neither of these angles is very well developed. Perhaps they will be explored more fully in the next installments in the Rachel Harroway series.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the writing is often clunky. In addition to grammar mistakes and typos, there are mixed metaphors (e.g., "Millions of thoughts and fears ate at her, and when she killed one, the train would only pick up speed.") and what I can describe only as infelicitous wording (e.g., "Rachel took a break from squeezing herself to brush a strand of hair behind her ear."). The dialogue is often unrealistic, as when Rachel's husband Brett says to her, "You went behind my back. First with the police officer and now with this." In this scene, they're in the middle of a fight, and Brett is very angry, to the point of shouting expletives. It's much more likely that he would say "First with the cop" or "First with Lynchfield" instead of the stilted "First with the police officer." With luck, J.S. Donovan will hire an editor or collaborate with a co-author for the next installments in the series.

this turned out better than I thought it would

Oh yea, this turned out better than I thought it would. If you read this book then you need to read the next, you'll get a better idea as to how tough Rachel really is. The first book gives you an idea of where Rachel is coming from but, book 1, which I just started, shows you what she's all about. I hope this will be a series cause I will absolutely get it .

Disturbing, horrific, deep, and beautiful writer

I really love Matt's stories. Don't know how I didn't start reading him until now. I just bought 7 of his books though, and I can't put them down. Some of his books are really short, but he still manages to get you to care about the characters. Whether they are good or bad. Yes, his books are brutal and gruesome, but once you get past all of that, there is always a message to be learned. I will read everything he comes up with. I'm a new and true fan already. I'm horrible at writing reviews. Just wanted to share my love of his work.

This book to me... I don't know how I feel about it... it was a very weird read lol None of the less,Matt Shaw delivers with the gore and horror, but.....I never expected him to write something like this. I guess it took me by surprise the guy on guy thing? I don't know, I read all the way to the end, but quite frankly I don't think I will be keeping this one. It was ok.....

In my opinion this was a boring reach for grossing out the reader but it was so trite and uninteresting I nearly quit reading , but finished hoping that somewhere in this story was something worth having spent money on. Oops.

A Near-Perfect Ghost Story

Generally, Stephen Graham Jones has a voice that is rare and is often extraordinary in its delivery, particularly concerningthe depiction of everyday humans in natural settings.

I Mapping the Interior, things are in place. Things are realistic. The rest builds on this foundation and become supernatural, unravelingin a way that makes you wonder if it's fiction at all.

Mapping the Interior is a triumph in a tiny package. Its intriguing and engaging, informative in such a waythat spirals the yarn from everyday ghost story into a tall tale ready to span generations and travel from campfire to campfire until its happening to you.

Its a somber beginning, quietuntil its not and the dogs are there right behind, nipping at heels, snapping for boy-meat morsels. It covers so many angles well in so few words that I am in awe. It would be a surprise if this isnt the best novella I read in 2017 once the year is through.

Outside my norm, I asked JournalStone for the audio of this one specifically because I was such a fan of Mongrels. Typically, you cant expect lightning to strike in such a way twice, and certainly not two releases so close together.

This is story so good, I listened to it twice, I don't know that it needs a more convincing point than that.

Notes specific to this version:it is under three hours to listen to and the narrator does a fantastic job handling the accent.

In my experience, G.M. Hague writes strange, short horror stories and "The Girl in the Back Seat" is no exception! In fact, this story has been my favorite by Hague so far, especially now that I've gotten used to his narration (which does indeed require getting used to!). A couple heading off on vacation accidentally picks up an unwanted passenger on a dark, side road and ends up terrorized by a lonely spirit. It was fun to listen to and the spookiness met my expectations for this story. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sort of light horror story that includes some sexual content with ghosts.

Tense, unnerving, sad.

Sure, it was a good horror short. A simple premise, and the story could have happened to anyone which always add to credibility of a story.

What about G.M. Hagues performance did you like?

G. M. read quite well, and as he is also the author he was able to pace the narration so match how he imagined the characters he wrote. Usually I would avoid a book self narrated by the author but not in this case.

Who was the most memorable character of The Girl in the Back Seat and why?

Well that would be the protagonist. The feeling of doom that slowly enveloped him as the story progressed was well done.

This was a quick and enjoyable read and another good story from author G. M. Hague. The story was simple and to the point, wasn't too much buildup or back story. I would recommend it.

Really good classic ghost story

I came up on YA ghost stories and have found that while larger novels appeal to my (mostly) more mature mind, I do miss a simple haunting with good backstory and creepy moments.

G.M. delivers perfectly here. We have the backstory, we have the creepy ghost with their own agenda, we have creep-factor. On top of all of that though, we also have some fairly interesting characters and world-building that enhance the experience.

The author also delivered a stellar performance. I would definitely listen to more from him.

Exactly What I've Been Looking For!

A gift for classic horror lovers. Love these narrators! Excellent readings, good variety of classic stories, and the production is on point. I know H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe inside and out, but the other works were new to me. Hopefully we get a volume two. Highly recommended!

Most people are familiar with the famous authors whose works of horror appear in this collection. Their stories are undeniably classics, and as such it is the quality of the narration that tends to become the prime factor in deciding whether to buy an audiobook of them. Well, I can definitely say you need look no further if you want professional and enthralling readings of these terrifying tales. Ian and Jennifer's eloquent vocal performances draw you in to the suspense and mystery of the works, making them seem fresh even if you've read or heard them before. Good paranormal historical fiction

I have listened to other books by G.M. Hague and remember really enjoying hearing him read his own book as he is intimate with the story and that comes through as he tells it. This one was the same. I think the story was definitely better being read by him. I also really enjoy his accent and since his voice is calm and soothing I could listen to him read most of the books I listen to.

I wouldnt call this story horror. It is more like a historical fiction with a slight paranormal twist. That doesnt mean that it is a bad story, just dont come looking for a full on horror story. I did enjoy the book but thought it was a bit slow to get to what I would call the horror aspects of it. Like the other books in the series this is a stand alone story so no need to listen to the previous volumes to understand what is going on.

I greatly enjoyed this book even though it was quite slow at the start. G.M. Hague explains in a forward to this book that he isn't going to affect any accents in his narration for the German soldiers. His explanation made perfect sense. That said, I found it very distracting to try and remember that I was hearing a story about German men and French women while listening to a (very strong) British accent tell it. As a film maker/story teller, I think it just would have been a better choice to hire a different narrator.

Once I got used to the weirdness of the narration accent, I thought this was a really interesting story. Hague takes a common trope (people not leaving when things get scary) and turns it on it's head by making it impossible for them to leave. I love who turns out to be the villains (no spoilers!) and how it ends. This is a period piece horror story that I would recommend to anyone who doesn't mind the wrong accent narrating the tale and who enjoys historical horror! Supernatural tale in an old Abbey

If you could sum up Horror Story: Volume III in three words, what would they be?

Claustrophobic. Horror. Doom.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Meuller. The badass seargent of the Wehrmacht unit. He was portray well; not just the usual ultra evil streotype (though he was that too!) but his character was well developed and the reader could understand the "logic" behind his decisions against the backdrop of the Ardennes offensive.

Which scene was your favorite?

The end... Don't want to spoilt it, but the end of the book was great.

Great series. Highly recommend

This was well written story. I reread I and II before I read the final book. I think it is especially delightful that the author did the audible narration. It does add a special flavor to the series.

Great Ending to the Trilogy !

Great ending and good story. However the many stupid questions while they were in the mist of danger and possible death was so annoying!! The standing there asking what's happening or what's that lead to people getting killed . The dumb questions they were asking Matthew and they took too long to leave when he told them we have to leave now got him killed !!! I just felt with all the characters have been through they just should've been smarter with their safety . Who cares If you pee in front of each other instead walking away from the vehicle and getting attacked. Also why are you trying to dig people out of scabs in middle of a fight with them. I think they fought smarter in the 1st and 2nd book . Overall the trilogy was brilliant and very well written aside from that dumb things that annoyed me I really enjoyed all three books. #highfive Eric !

Not sure I like the ending, but let me think on it. As was stated I. The beginning not e everyone can be happy. A trilogy is hard to write. So we'll have to go with 98 percent favorable. Was so caught up in the story. Will be sad to have to let it go. Recommended

I absolutely enjoyed this series

Overall this is a very great series. I like the uniqueness of the plot. I did get annoyed at bits and pieces of the last book Scabs 3, but the author ended the series very satisfactory. I really liked that I could not predict what would happen to the characters, but struggled with some of the choices they made. Even with the few annoyances I'm glad I read this series. I was hooked on the first book, and couldn't wait for book 2 and 3. It did not disappoint.

Narrated well but...

I had been eagerly awaiting the third book in this series and am actually a bit disappointed. The alien angle did not do it for me at all - also, Koku sudden shift in vernacular was off-putting.

"Yeh, I'm gonna get you, yeah, you think you are the biggest, smartest around here." He watched Parrain's head peek up a little from the murky green water. "You don't better forget who been running this swamp, Parrain, and feeding you all. Ha, I saw that, you are listening, and you better listen good." Tossing the empty bottle at Parrain, the bottle hit the water in front of Parrain, and he submerged under water. "I can't give you all of them," he yelled! "I'll share. I will."

He walked into the brush, lifted up a large cement lid, he reached into a hole and felt around. "Where the hell did you get to you little varmints," as he grabbed hold of an arm, pulling out a screaming boy.

"No! No! No! Let me go!"

"Shut up!" Cooter smacked his greasy hand across the boy's head. Stunned, the boy stopped yelling. As Cooter used his foot to push the lid back over the hole, also kicking a deflated bunch of balloons out of the way that the boy had been clutching in his hand.

Perfect For The Horror/Thriller Fanatic!

Horror has always been one of my favorite genres, so I was excited to read Balloon Man by Frances Laskowski. Set in Louisiana in present day, Laskowski tells the story of multiple people who together are all a part of Cooter's (Balloon Man) story as a torturer and killer. She also tells the tales of all who are affected by him, and how they are able to survive and live a more positive life after Balloon Man puts them through the wringer. He is a filthy low life who hangs around a massive alligator known as Pyrrain, and kidnaps children by enchanting them with colorful balloons. I really enjoyed Balloon Man because in the ways of the women's torture and survival it reminded me of my beloved V.C. Andrews. Laskowski has her own way of leading one chapter into the next, so that you are excited to make your way through the story. I can say that this is a great book for any time of the year. It would make a great beach read, a story for Halloween, or something to take with you on a long train ride! I look forward to reading more of Laskowski's work. Something really unique to the Balloon Man novel, is that Frances wrote a song for the story.

Really enjoyed and had your interest throughout the entire book. Was an easy read also. The first few chapter introduced alot of characters and thought I was gonna lose them but then it all flowed through. Great read..buy it

Would recommend as it is an easy read

Intriguing story line with multiple characters. Kept my interest throughout. When feeling a new story had begun, the author tied previous characters and theme together.
