Very Preachy

I am a retired Navy Commander, and I bought this book because I had read that my first ship, USS REUBEN JAMES, played a big role and the plot looked interesting. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in the execution of the book and the accuracy. I wont bore you with the list of military/Navy mistakes, but there were so many it made the listening very frustrating. Personnel doing things out of job description of their rate or rank, using equipment that doesnt exist on certain types of ships. Also, lots of preaching: apparently everyone in the Navy and the government prays a lot. I served nearly 3 years at the Pentagon and never once did I hear it referred to as The Building. Must be a JAG thing. Good idea executed poorly. To finish the book I wore out my I believe button.

One note on the Narration. I have not listened to the previous 4 books in this series that were criticized for having a British narrator. This narrator is American, but I did have problems distinguishing the characters. All Indonesians bled together, and all Navy personnel seemed to be either from Chicago or from the deep South. Not sure what thats about.

Overall I was disappointed. I will not be listening to the other 4 books in the series.

Such an awesome series. I especially loved the ending. Outstanding narrator. This is an author that I will re read.

Written from a narrow worldview perspective, this book leaves little room for intrigue, suspense, and imagination.

Great message!

If you ever want to learn how to better control your emotions on and off the course, this book is a must read. I enjoyed getting lumps in my throat listening to this book as the examples and lessons can be profound yet simply stated. I'm ready to take my game and my life to the next level of understanding and compassion. I'm no longer trapped by my score or how many birdies I make, but free to enjoy the game for what it is. I can't wait to play!

Decent experience

Good inspirational content; should be a lot longer though to add depth. *SPOILER* the fact that the protagonist was able to fix a marriage in the course of a night during a four day golf tournament was a little too quick for my taste (the book just didn't have enough "show-not-tell")

One of the best movies ever.

Speaks to life in general in the format of a golfer is time of difficulty. Inspiring, accurate, and valuable thoughts for all ages. Well presented and in terms that all should be able to appreciate if they think about the content and not just the example. Excellent to read and reread.

Another Great Book :)

Take Three is just as amazing as the previous books have been. It was great to get back in touch with the Baxter family and to learn more about their new friends. If you haven't read Karen Kingsbury, you are definitely missing out on some great reading. God has certainly blessed Karen with the gift of writing and leading many (I'm sure) to a close personal relationship with God Himself.

A Special Experience

The story is really intense and addresses relevant issues head-on in true Karen Kingsbury style. Found it deeply moving and, like after reading any of her novels, I feel that it changed me (even if only in the slightest ways) for the better. Thank you for another special experience...

Absolutely knife-edge story

I couldn't stop listening to this book, it was also a valuable lesson about having so much pride you cud cut your own nose off.!!! When I read the review on this book I would have bought it if it wasn't for the fact I love Terri Blackstocks book, so I bought it anyway, and would recommend it to any one. Was absolutely fantastic and God was still glorified in it!

Was really a good book!!!

Not her best work

I usually love her books but this one didn't really get started good until the last couple of hours. At the end, it was her normal good caliber work.

I was surprised to find the main male character was called Jason instead of Justin by the narrator. I was wondering who the new character was until I realized it was an error.

I love Terri Blackstock's books! We have listened to and enjoyed many of them. But this one was tedious! The whimpering, whiny, back and forth teen-age type love story was just too aggravating! I couldn't listen to the end, though I really tried! Sad disappointment!

Great story, terrible narrator...

I first read this book about 8 years ago when I received the series as a gift from my mother. Terri Blackstock is an excellent writer and, being from a small town in Louisiana myself, does a great job capturing the dynamics and traditions of living in that area of the country. The problem with the audiobook rests solely on the back of the terrible narrator. I don't know where the producers found this guy, but he has obviously done no research whatsoever. He mispronounces a lot of the names and his "Cajun" accent is absolutely atrocious. I work in theatre and when actors do a play or movie that involves speaking in a particular dialect, it takes days of research and rehearsal to make sure they are representing it correctly. Clearly, that was not the case here since whoever this man is he equates Cajun with French. It would have been better if he'd done no accent at all instead of the distorted French accent. He made listening to a great story cringe-worthy. It's a shame that producers don't require more effort and knowledge from their narrators.

The Narrator ruined it!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

ONLY if it was narrated by someone else. The narrator didnt do this book justice. He was breathy, he sighed at inappropriate times and he seemed uninterested. There are background noises like people talking and what sounds like bodily functions. I was disappointed to the point of wanting to get my money/credit back.

What didnt you like about Ed Salas performance?

Everything. I think he ruined the story.

The story plot was awesome.

Such a beautiful romance.

This book was so enjoyable. Parts of it took my breath away. I enjoyed it so much I began listening again as soon as I was finished the first time. I enjoyed almost as much the second time. So far it the best from Kristen Hietzman that I've listened to so far. Right up there with Francine Rivers. I thought the male reader might ruin it for me but u think it made it even better.

Terrible Narrator

Kristen Heitzmann writes fantastic stuff but the narrator's voice is more suited to a crime novel than a romance and his timing and cadence are the worst. It was so annoying getting through this book.

The Still of Night

This was a very engaging read. At one point I became so affected by the scene that I wanted to give a critique of the character involved and rate the novel accordingly. I'm glad that I pressed on. I've read a few novels lately (audio books) that have taken the dressing off of Christian life so that we can see what's underneath and this was one. I highly recommend it.

LOVED THE AUDIO VERSION BOOK

What made the experience of listening to A Gift of Grace the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed listening to the characters. You became so involved with each character and how they were feeling while listening to the audio version it made you feel as if you were there. I worked in my office I found myself being helped by the advice being given in the book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Gift of Grace?

When Rebecca realizes it's in giving up what was most precious to her in order to hear God clearly she was trying to hold onto what she wanted and after obeying God she was receiving the blessings and peace in her life. The book was exciting and had me captivated and looking for the next book. I loved this book.

What about Devon O' Days performance did you like?

The reader had so much expression and did so well with discovering a voice for each of the characters that you could tell who was speaking while listening. I listen to a lot of audio books and this was one of the best.

Any additional comments?

A lesson in love and giving up of yourself and your needs for others and learning how to find your way back in your marriage when you have both been very hurt. Love and forgiveness is the key to restoring broken relationships.

Great Amish reading

What did you like about this audiobook?

I love the humbleness of the Amish. I know this is fiction, but I really desire to be more humble and rely on God more and more. I love the scripture that is constantly quoted.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

A whole lot. I want to read more and more about the Amish.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

Yes, to a large degree. I got just a little tired of the relationships going back and forth, but it certainly did not keep me from going on with the book.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

I did not like the narration at all. Emphasis was almost nil. When someone would be in a tramatic situation, as when the girls godmother would speak, the narration just didn't meet the situation at all. I was "oh really"....I felt there should have been more dramatics in her voice/output. Was not happy at all with the narration of just this one book.

Do you have any additional comments?

Just a great series.

If you could sum up A Gift of Grace in three words, what would they be?

Good story. I love Amish books. I really enjoyed this one. Did not want the story to end. A pleasure to drive and listen. It is like watching a movie in your head while you listen. Good Job.

it was a little unbelievable but at the same time brought the thinking of two different worlds togather the division and decisions were believable the story kept my attention and it was not just another amish love story

Excellent book!

This book has romance, history, drama and mystery. It is our first book by Tamera Alexander but won't be our last. My husband and I normally listen to books while in the car. This one made it into the house ... we couldn't bear to stop listening! This is not just a book for the gals! We highly recommend the book, author and narrator.

Beautiful story

What a beautiful story through and through. Gods redemptive love to us is woven in and around this story. Wyatt's love for Kenna, Kenna's love for Emma and her brother through such a mess he made in his life, yet she still loves him. Chinn Lee paying the bride price for his wife was beautifully woven in to this story as well. Thank you Tamera for this beautiful book!

What did you like best about this story?

So many things. I enjoy books about the Amish as they seem to increase my joy and peace. This was such an uplifting story of two deeply wounded people, who finally come back to life. Mrs. Woodsmall does an excellent job telling the story and developing her characters. Beth and her Aunt Lizzie were amazing as was Jonah and his brother Amos. The scenes just unfold before your mind's eye.

Cindy Woodsmall's Amish writing stands out along with Beverly Lewis' books. The Sound of Sleigh Bells was not just a 'Christmas' story - her characters were real - the story line believable - I would recommend this story.

Sweet, enjoyable story

I read this after "The Christmas Singing", which actually follows on from this book, but would have to say I prefer this one. It took me a while to get into it, maybe because I started listening to it when I was busy finishing off coursework at the end of the semester and wasn't able to concentrate and appreciate it properly. But by the end of the book I was really enjoying it and had really come to sympathise with Beth. The secret behind her mourning Henry definitely changed my perception of this book, which had previously seemed to be about a girl who had had one failed relationship and didn't want to be hurt again, and turned it into a much deeper, more meaningful story. I'm also impressed with Cindy for tackling such a tough subject amongst the Amish and making readers realise that such things can happen in any community. I also liked the concept of Lizzie, Beth's aunt, setting up Beth and Jonah without them realising it via letters. It was sweet, and it's not often that letters feature in such a way in Amish novels. It made a nice change. Overall, I really did enjoy this story and I'm looking forward to reading "When the Heart Cries" (which has been on my shelf for far too long!) sometime in 2012.
