Too modernized

Story was good and reader did a good job. It was just too modernized for me, an old school Hardy Boys buff. I have the original 58 books and I just didn't care for the new version. If your new to Hardy Boys, you'll probably like it. I'll stick with the original stuff.

Laugh, cry then laugh again. This is magical perfection.

From the characters' names to their strong voices, this novel will pull you in quickly. It's the kind of writing that sinks into your soul. I already know I will read it over and over. I want more Ben, Flip, Halley, Tess and the Lorentz family. I just finished and I want to go back to page 1 and start again. This novel is real, and really brilliant. You will love Ben Coffin with every ounce of your being. You'll wish you could be his friend. And you'll wish you could rub Flip's stomach. Read this book and the words will make you laugh, cry, then laugh again. This is magical perfection.

Amazing!

Beautiful and Real

I ordered this book due to a recommendation from a friend. I finished it within 2 days. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were described in such a way that I felt like I knew them. I loved the way the kids have such a great imagination. I feel like that is not as abundant anymore and it should be, it is just a good book! I would recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Genie in a Bottle

This book is amazing! I couldn't stop listening to it until the very end! The plot is thrilling, and the ending has an unexpected twist, just like these books always do. I'd recommend it for children who love fairytales. The narrator has a voice that makes you think it actually is Abby speaking! Genie in a Bottle is a great book.

Enjoyable stories and characters

I read all 4 books in this series to my 7 year old son and we both enjoyed the stories and the characters.

Great Children's Book

The Fairchild's are my favorite Kentucky famly. The now deceased Rebecca Caudill (she died in 1989) has written a series of four books about their adventures featuring Bonnie, the youngest. There are five children, Althie, Chris, Emmy, Debby, and Bonnie. They live in northern Kentucky with their parents in a simple house. The family life portrayed in these books is warm, realistic, funny, and touching. Bonnie's disappointment when she gets a sunbonnet instead of a hat, their pet goose, ice skating on the pond, going to the schoolhouse in the woods, are told through her eyes with a fresh spirit and a sense of joy.

I love all four books about the Fairchilds.

Great Story but Lousy Narration

Would you consider the audio edition of The Princess in Black, Books 1-3 to be better than the print version?

The print version is much better. The illustrations in the print book are adorable and add an extra element of fun to the story. My daughter is so obsessed with the books that I downloaded the audio version for her to listen to in the car when I can't read to her.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Princess Magnolia/The Princess in Black is an amazing. I like that she is strong and tough but also sweet and polite. Before she fights the monsters, she asks politely for them to return to monster land.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator of this audio book really detracts from the listening experience. She speaks in a sleepy, slightly raspy monotone and doesn't capture any of the excitement or charm of the story. I would have liked a more enthusiastic reader. Maybe Ms. Whelan was trying to sound soft because this might be a bedtime story, but I wish she'd tried to sound more engaging.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The print version does make me (and my daughter) laugh. She also gasps and gets extremely excited.

Any additional comments?

This is such a great book. It's really a shame that the narration is so flawed. I would love to see the upcoming book narrated by someone else (or differently by Ms. Whelan)

Wonderful book! Fantastic adventure. Have learned so many interesting tidbits around the world that I never knew previously. Even regarding places I've already been to. Great sequel to the double cross books. I believe also the last of the four books of the series. Highly recommend it. Fantastic narrator!

Terrific story for young girls

Crystal Allen has written a wonderful book for my girls! Mya Tibbs is just like any of my students-struggling to make good decisions, trying make good friends and be one, and dealing with the ups and downs of school, family and life in general. And she does it with exuberance and joy, always throwing 100% at every task. I loved this book and know that my fourth and fifth graders will, too. Teachers will appreciate the cast of well-developed characters, the clear plot, and themes of friendship, forgiveness, and perseverance. I will be ordering #2 in the Mya Tibbs series immediately and can't wait to see what this irrepressible girl will get into in that one! Little side note--I was fortunate enough to briefly speak to Crystal Allen at the 2017 Texas Library Association conference and her joie de vivre was contagious. We all left her book signing line hoping that her book would be as wonderful as she seemed to be.

great story!

great author!! will certainly look for more books by this author!! narrator was great, too. only thing that could make the narrator better is if she actually sang the songs in the book, which would be tough because we don't know the tunes!!

reading the songs as poetry is just fine with me, too, though.

Cute/clever re-imagining kept me listening late!

I really enjoyed this take on the Snow White story and that our heroine was not gorgeous like Snow White usually is. This is such a clever re-telling with many elements I didn't see coming. The narration was very good and generally seamless, although anyone buying this should be aware that in the land where this book takes place, the characters like to sing a lot. This means that the narrator has to speak all the songs (and there are many of them, and some are very long). This wouldn't be an issue if you were reading the book because then you could skim down the length of the songs and see what they were about. With the audio book you have to listen to every line--even the repeats of some of the choruses, which grew somewhat irritating. Still, if you enjoy poetry recitations, or can tune out for a bit, or don't listen in the car and are good at using your FF button, this issue shouldn't be a problem for you. It certainly didn't ruin the story for me, which was generally delightful!

Great writer. Perfect person to perform this book. I will definitely be buying more under the same writer. I really enjoyed the whole experience.

The story was sweet, and the voice was suitable, but I had had wishful thinking that the songs would be sung.
