Amazing premise, decent execution

I downloaded this book on the premise alone, which is delightfully creative: a detective story set in the middle of a futuristic Zimbabwe. The book is flawed in some rather odd ways, however. The titular detectives turn out to be the most undeveloped characters in the book, and feel strangely irrelevant to the plot as a whole. It's the kidnapped children who drive the plot forward, and they shine, alongside the places they visit. A good book overall, but it rides more on its unique world than its quality. Recommended for those who really want something different.

Voice performance is top notch. Gruff generals, bumbling fools, and scared children are all voiced expertly by Guidall.

Very original and entertaining

My sixth-grader was assigned this book at school. I ended up listening to the audiobook. Surprisingly original and entertaining. Good clean fun for the whole family.

Good for young readers

I liked this book. It dealt with many subjects that can affect kids today. The father tho gruff was only trying to keep his children safe. While many kids consider running away or sneaking out they will understand better why they should listen instead to their parents instead. It deals with poverty and the underside of life in a way that is not so frightening but informative and children will have a better understanding of the world we live in. It also deals with people who are different and special in their own ways. I enjoyed this book and finished it feeling good about it.

Engaging read frm beginning to end

Its a beautiful read. It is captivating from beginning to finish. I wished they had found the blue money.

Rusty James and the Motorcycle Boy

I have been a fan of S.E. Hinton since grade school having read all of her novels (way, way back in the day) and thought I would revisit her works with Rumble Fish. Not as popular as The Outsiders, I always liked Rumble Fish and even now in my forties can see the brilliant insight Hinton has when it comes to adolescence. This story follows Rusty James, who thinks he wants to be just like his older brother, the Motorcycle Boy, without really knowing his brother at all. If you enjoyed the rough and tough world of the Outsiders, then youll enjoy Rumble Fish. Great read/listen and Tom Stechschulte does an excellent job with the narration.

not a big fan

basically only listened to book so I could help the kid with his English. I didn't really enjoy it. Not sure why it is considered a new classic

Wrong Performer for this story

While Rumble Fish isn't my favorite SE Hinton book it is one I have enjoyed since childhood. The story is not your usual coming of age tale and Hinton write her characters quite well. You can easily relate in some way or another to Rusty James and his odd relationship with his brother 'the Motorcycle Boy'.

I think that the choice of Tom Stechschulte as performer for this audio was pretty far off base. This story is told from the viewpoint of a 14yo boy and Stechschulte has a much older voice. Also, his halting speech and oddly timed breaks in the middle of sentences throws the story off quite a bit. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it as much as I once did were it more appropriately cast.

I bought this book for a charity drive, ended up reading it myself and buying a second copy for the charity drive and sending my Mom a copy too.

Beautiful, Engaging, and Inspiring â and for All Ages!

There are few things I enjoy more than beautifully written, engaging, and inspiring Young Adult books that are truly for all ages! I recently read two I adored by master storyteller Laura Resau: âThe Lightning Queenâ and âWhat the Moon Saw.â Both are set partly in Mexico and are filled with the same magic, beauty, and spirit that I feel when I'm there. Iâm reading a third book by Laura now, âRed Glass," and it, too, is healing and life-affirming, and written with a simple grace. All three of these books offer mystery, romance, and adventure, and are imbued with a natural spirituality. They are also very exciting and full of life!

Laura Resauâs books tell of hero and heroine journeys that would surely help âyoung adultsâ find their true self. And for âolder adults,â they are a way to reconnect with or rediscover the true self we sometimes forget.

A realistic, magical, vividly told story of friendship. Highly recommended!

I read this book recently with my ten year old daughter and both of us loved it. It's a brilliant, beautiful, diverse story of friendship with a dash of magical realism, and incredibly beautiful writing. Laura Resau is an amazing story-teller with a fantastic ear for capturing different character's voices. I was enchanted by the writing throughout, and my daughter loved the adventure, the magical moments, and the quirky animal characters. It's a warm, creative book, with both heart and humor. In addition to being entertaining, there's much in this book that's worth discussing. I highly recommend it for both boys and girls, and young and old readers.

Lightning Queen an outstanding read!

I have been a dedicated listener to Hank the Cowdog audiobooks for a long long time (since they were on cassette) and this is as classic as they get.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Christmas Turkey Disaster?

When Hank destroys his own bed in protest and realizes he has no where to sleep anymore.

Terrible Christmas bedtime story

Narrator is annoying, story is very poorly structured, and the sound effects are incredibly distracting.

30 mins into this book and it has nothing to do with Christmas yet.

My 7 daughter and I both did not enjoy this and gave up on it.

Great balance of characters!

The story was great. I like that throughout the story it was not predictable and neither was the ending. She is doing a great job of focusing the story on the apprentice while appropriately balancing the roles of the old characters that we know and love.

Inconsistent voices and pronunciation

I truly enjoyed the story. I also think the series is very well written and very entertaining. Unfortunately the narrator did not listen to the previous books in the series. She didn't understand how things were pronounced and it really bothered me that she kept getting characters names wrong. I did like the fact that the new characters had different accents from the previous characters but once again I was not very thrilled with the narration.

another winner

angie safe has done it again I feel in love with her first series and now am on the edge of my seat waiting for the last book in this one. They are wonderful creations of fantasy for all ages

What made the experience of listening to This Side of Wild the most enjoyable?

The author sees animals as training us instead of the other way around. It is a light hearted book. It is a EASY read that leads you through with a clear picture of the situation.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was the toy poodle. This may be due to the fact that i have 2 small dogs and i can clearly visualize the "I am a big dog" attitude of the smaller breeds.

Which character as performed by Fred Sanders was your favorite?

I loved his telling of the snake bite. I can see the horse rider jumping and trying to get rid of the snake that was hung up on his boot. I would have jumped a good 10 feet instead of the 4 the author did. Also the incident of trying to jump on a horse like Gene Autry was great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I actually read the book the first time. I enjoyed it so much that i purchased the audio. It is a book that i will listen to over and over.

Any additional comments?

I noticed that the book is intended of 8-10 year old youth. I am 63 and loved it.

I love this series!

I love this series! Jason Segal has made a fun word where nightmares aren't scary, and the characters are so vivid that it's hard to put the book down. I am very excited for the third installment of this series.

In the second installment of this series the town has been over run by sleepwalkers or "walkers", the boys once again have to seek help from the nightmares and their stepmother charlotte to save the town before it's too late. This book is particularly fun because it leaves a great set up for the third installment.

Love these books!

I hope that Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller keep this series up. I can't get enough of the adventures the kids and Charlotte have in the stories. They're filled with so much bravery, humor, and love.

This book was one of the choices on my daughter's summer reading list for middle school. I started listening as well so we could talk about it. I got hooked very quickly. It reminded me of a younger version of Robin Hood or the Hunger Games series-how one person can make a difference. I would definitely recommend it to others. I look forward to reading book 2 now to find out what happens next.
