A Lot Of Fun!!

I really enjoyed this book! The storyline of a magical dreamland may not be the most unique, but the inventive descriptions and the added fun of the narration really does put a fresh feel to this story. Segel's narration really adds a lot to the audio version - it is a genuine performance that really makes it all the more fun! He has a great range for all of the different characters and voices.

And I think that, despite the youth of the main character, this is a book that will appeal to a wide range of ages - from the old to the young. And I think that blended families may particularly enjoy Charlie's story and his relationship with his stepmonster! It's a lot of fun and I am thrilled that there are two more books - I think I may save them to listen to over Halloween this year!

Superb!

This book has one of the best plots and most well developed main characters that I've read in a while. The reading by Segel is so accurate in characterization and tone that the story came to life and had me mesmerized and hanging on. A story I will put in the hands of my students who may not be brave enough to face the fears in their own lives. More, please!

Good end to this fun series

We love these books. They provide a little bit of history and a little bit of geography in a fun and exciting adventure story. The narrator is exvellent, somehow managing to give each character their own voice abd personality. Thoroughly enjoyable for kids and adults!

Love over money again

I enjoyed this young adult book a great deal. For me it was about connecting and believing and trying to hold on. Some people might object to homeless orphans forming a thieving ring, but I liked how they stuck together and showed a great example of loyalty.

Great story

My kids (ages 10&12) really enjoyed this story and loved the reader's many different voices for the different characters!

Loot is superb

Sting is an awesome book and it is full of action. I choose this book because other books by Jude Watson are just as good and I highly recommend all of them

Drive-In Movie?

Today so few of these theaters exist that the kids of today don't know what they missed. The fight to keep the BIG screen and the acreage that it took to park the cars does not bring in the dollars needed for the upkeep. Fond memories of by gone days are what is left.

Loved the Setting

Drive-ins still exist here and there, and this story is a good introduction to what they were and what they now are. The setting in and around an old drive-in theater is quite attractive, and the various goings-on in relationship to the upkeep of the theater and the screening of movies quite interesting. The scene of Benny riding his tricycle around the bottom of the outdoor screen is sweet. An excellent choice.

At this stage, it is getting somewhat predictable and it is David Tennant's performance to makes me listening.

The characters come alive. Every one is different and I can recognize the characters as they go from book to book

Dragon mania!

My children have been listening to the entire series of How to Train your Dragon and I've heard bits and pieces of each story. But this volume is getting more serious. I actually would not let them listen to it without me! Captivating story which ends with the biggest cliffhanger of the series so far compelling us to get the 10th book ASAP. So in summary it was thoroughly enjoyed by a 5, 6 and 38 year old.

Sound effects were distracting

I listened to the audiobook of this book and I really did love it. The plot was fun and exciting and David Tenant was still amazing as the narrator but I did notice the new sound effects. Honestly, they were a little distracting. I actually would rate this a 4.5 stars because of the new sound effects.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The three new sequels, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again, Race Against Time, and Over The Moon are all fine, but they are also one long story. I think it would work better as a single longer story, rather than three shorter, incomplete stories.

What other book might you compare Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again to and why?

Not sure. The original had a definite feel of time and place that worked for the story. These are intentionally taking place decades later and therefore have a different feel. What was charming in the original tends to feel just silly viewed in a modern world.

Have you listened to any of David Tennants other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not in Audible, but I have followed his career and he brings some obvious joy and sense of fun to this.

Did Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again inspire you to do anything?

It pretty much required you to read the two following books to see the end of the story. There were a LOT of loose ends left hanging - intentionally.

Brilliant!

This series just gets better and better with each book! It's fast becoming one of my favourites, and indeed, on of my kids favourites!

This one is a bit darker and scarier than the rest but I loved that! Jake finds himself in Wales this time, visiting his mine, when strange things start happening! One thing I love about these books is the settings. The authors manage to pick the perfect setting for each story. This is no different, Wales is a beautiful place, add in a spooky mine, small village and you have a winner!

Jake once again is such an exceptional character. He struggles with a lot of things but always does his best. At first he struggles with his wealth and finds it hard to deal with, but because of his friends, he snaps out of it. The character development from a pickpocket to what he is now is phenomenal.

The plot is, once again, amazing. As I said, it's a bit darker and scarier than the rest but I think it needed to be. Jake always finds himself in trouble so a little scary is needed! Even though it's darker, it doesn't loose its trade mark wit, that I've come to love! We still get the funny, we just have an added tenseness this timw, which makes the story extraordinary.

There isn't a lot more I can say about this without spoiling it, other than if you haven't read these books then you really need to! It has everything an amazing book needs! The authors have really captures my attention and my heart with these books and I can't recommend it enough! From it's fantastical creatures, to it's phenomenal writing, this is a must read for any age!!

Pretty good!

Not my favorite of the series, but still a good story. My complaint about he performance is because there's some cool processing that goes on, and it only lasts for a very short time, when it could totally last longer! But hey, I'm a sound designer, so it probably won't bother anyone else! Otherwise it's a fun book! Listened to it while I shopped for, made, and ate dinner. Good book!

This book will make a lasting impression on you!

I read this book 50 years ago when I was in grammar school and it made a lasting impression on me. I always said I would someday re-read it. I finally have done that. I downloaded a Kindle copy, re-read it and I love it as much as I did 50 years ago! The characters really come to life and you feel their pain and pleasure as they live through the sufferings of the Civil War. Its obvious why the characters and their situations are so real: they were based on real life people, family letters and stories told by the author's grandfather, who was nine years old at the beginning of the war and was an eyewitness to this fascinating period of history. I've read Irene Hunt's other books and I like them all, but this one will always be my favorite. Its written for a young audience but people of all ages will enjoy it. I can see why it won the Newberry Award. If you read only one book this year, let it be this one!

Across Five Aprils is one of the best Civil War books written for readers of any age. I have read it and listened to it many times. This recorded version is very good, but it is not great. As a listener, I have never been moved by the story as I was as a reader. Even so, I have gone back to the recorded version several times. This book introduces you to both people and history that you cannot bear to let go of.

40 years between re-reading this book

I H-A-D to read this book in Jr. High, I think. Regardless of when, it made a lasting impression on me. I appreciate the style and substance so much more now than my 13 year old self did. The specifics I remembered are nits in the overall scope of the tale. I'm glad I re-read this wonderful book.

One of My Favorites For Young People

As a Reading Specialist who taught 7th grade, I was constantly on the lookout for books which would entice my young students to read. This was one book which I recommended to them. I often read it aloud to classes, and the response was always positive. This is a touching story of the Civil War and the heartache and tragedy that befell families who had offered up their sons, brothers, fathers, etc. to join in the battle. Irene Hunt hit just the right chord with the narration of this beautiful story.

This Grandma loved this book!

Would you listen to Stepping on the Cracks again? Why?

I always appreciate when the characters in a book become so real that I feel I have lost friends when the book ends. Stepping on the Cracks definitely felt that way! I enjoyed the elements of patriotism and the window into family life when a member is missing while away "at war". I rarely rate a book with 5 stars, but I had to give this one five, both on the audible site & also on Goodreads.com. I will be looking for more from this author!
