Pattersons Middle School series features Rafes little sister this time. When Georgia Khatchadorian enters Hills Village Middle School (known to the kids as HVMS), she believes things will be a snap. Shes smart and has a track record. That should be worth something.

Rafe has already moved on from Middle School, but his history has not been forgotten. It doesnt take long for Georgia to learn how to walk in Rafes shadow.

I dont want to provide any spoilers to this delightful stumbling routine through the hallowed halls of Middle School, but this book has it all. The princess brigade, consisting of the most popular girls, and the sudden onset of rushing hormones as boys and girls begin to discover they dont necessarily carry cooties after all.

Bullying is alive and well in the hallowed halls of HVMS, and even Georgia has a bit of a problem embracing a kid who doesnt quite measure up to the expectations of the in-crowd.

This is a perfect gift for the young girl who is entering Middle School. She may discover her life isnt as bad as she thought it was. (Well, except for the boogersWhat MG book would be complete without them?)

What made the experience of listening to George vs. George the most enjoyable?

The narrator was wonderful. My 12 year old and I didn't expect to like it as much as we did. Definitely one of the best children's books we have listened to for that time period. And I enjoyed it as well.

Any additional comments?

Although my 12 year old and I loved the book, it would also definitely appeal to a younger child and be a good early introduction to the Revolutionary War. Because of its shorter length, it would be a good one to listen to in a series of car rides.

The only reason I didn't give the narrator 5 stars is that she faltered a bit on the poetry.

When the Angels Are Too Happy to Sing Sense

At the Back of the North Wind is an enchanting book written as a fairy tale composed of fairy tales and nursery rhymes that sing and dream. But, dont think of it as a childrens book, though it is simple enough in writing structure for the young to read. I read it first in my thirties, along with another of his works, Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women. And, that is what they both could best be considered, fairy tales for adults. Though Fantasy tales have been around forever, MacDonald is seen as one of the pioneers of the written genre. I dont know if the impact of the book could have been absorbed by me if Id read it as a child.

The title, and the whole story, is a metaphor for death. The North Wind is personified as a beautiful lady, who mothers a young boy. As you read this you find yourself substituting the idea of sickness, and even death for every ride the boy takes in the arms of North Wind. He presumably needs mothering while he is in the feverish ride of an overcoming sickness that leaves him unconscious of his own Mothers nursing of him for long days. You know from the beginning that this child will die will be ultimately carried away to the Back of the North Wind. And so he goes.

When Diamond, the boy, is well he is very loved by his poor parents, and they live in the barn with his namesake, an old horse named Diamond who pulls the handsome cab for young Diamonds father the cabman. Young Diamond has that quiet wisdom of a serious child which so often shocks adults. Many of the other characters think of him as not quite right in the head. They love him and call him Gods Child. But, he understands all this and just laughs about it. They dont realize hes ridden at the back of the North Wind. He befriends other poor children, and adults who help his poor family.

But, the meaning of the phrase At the Back of the North Wind is explained near the end of the book to refer more generally to bad fortune, evil chance, or ruin. But, its explained in such a way that you realize that sickness and bad events are merely the shadow of death, or a picture of what is at the back of the North Wind. Death will ultimately carry you there. So, the whole of the book is written as a comfort for parents who have lost a child to death, or who have a child who is chronically sick, as MacDonald himself experienced the early death of one of his children.

It also looks at the mistaken assumptions that other children can replace lost children. The story winds beautifully through the addition of two new babies to the family. And many sad and beautiful moments are contained in the story, as when you see the North Wind sink a ship with all on board.

Here you are taking care of a poor little boy with one arm, and there you are sinking a ship with the other. It cant be like you! -Young Diamond speaking to Lady North Wind

George MacDonald, Lewis Carroll, G. K. Chesterson, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis of these great five authors, Tolkien was the only one who survived into my lifetime.

Better than I was led to believe

What did you love best about Trust No One?

The characters are growing up, as you would expect through a series like this.

What other book might you compare Trust No One to and why?

Septimus Heap book series, Artemus Fowl book series, these are adventures with the "growing up" theme and beginner romance interspersed.

Which scene was your favorite?

Amy finding out about the mole in the group/family. And the Voynich Manuscript!

This is a Young Adult offering, so one should expect a fun romp around the world that goes non-stop from start to finale, which is to say, the set up for the next book in the series. The 39 clues series is altogether one of this geography teachers favorite books series, because it gets my students to look up places and history.

yes it was fun to listen to in the truck. We looked for places to go so we could hear the next chapter.

The fact that my teenager and I had something to talk about.The story is about kids that do amazing things.

The worse book in the 39 Clues series

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Whereas all the other books in the series have plenty of substance and credibility, this book really undoes all the great work of the previous authors. There is no red thread that connects the back story and worse still the central characters start to go through a major personality change!

Has Trust No One turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

What about David Pittus performance did you like?

Same as usual - stunning repertoire of dialects and intonation keeps it all believable.

Not the Same Enna

Would you consider the audio edition of Enna Burning to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, but I'm not a huge fan of a "full cast recording," especially when one of the main readers, the boy who plays Finn has a speech impediment. His s is overpronounced and sometimes pronounced with an sh sound so that "yes" comes out "yesh" or "yeth." It was incredibly distracting.

What did you like best about this story?

I don't really know how to answer this. The Goose Girl is based on a fairy-tale and I think that format helps Hale quite a bit. When departing from the fairy-tale, she sometimes becomes lost. This book had a lot of battles and therefore a lot of repetition. Once Enna is captured by the enemy, the story becomes much more personal and interesting. However, I still did not enjoy it as much as the Goose Girl or the Princess Academy series. I don't know whether I'll get the third and fourth books in the Bayern series. I might read them from the library instead since this book was a slight disappointment and only multi-cast recordings are available.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I would rather have listened to a narrator instead of a full-cast recording. A good narrator can create characters. 10-15 people aren't necessary and they're more distracting than anything. I do think this detracted from the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The descriptions of the fire calling to Enna to burn. I liked the fact that she saw what happened to her brother and thought she could do the same, but come off unscathed. The author's descriptions were very similar to explaining an addiction.

I also thought the parts with her lover were particularly moving. If anyone has been in a relationship with a manipulative person, or if you've ever read about Stockholm Syndrome, you can relate to what she went through.

If you read or listened to Goose Girl, you remember Enna as a strong and loyal friend. For most of this book, she's a traitorous wench who hops into bed with the first smooth talking man she comes across. It's disgusting to see these changes, particularly because she completely gets away with it in the end.

I must say the Author Grace Lin has created yet another great Chinese folklore story. It is absolutely beautiful from beginning to end. All the characters in this book have interesting parts to play and all come together quite well. Overall it's a must read! I would recommend to everyone!

Great Book Kids and I Loved it

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, the kids and I could not get enough.We had something we can talk about. With a teenager in the house it is nice when she can share with her younger brother. They both see themselves in the characters.

Yawn turned into a dropped jaw

I wasn't sure about this story at first. A Victorian Era piece, really? But I needed to read at least part of this award winning book to better share it in a presentation on award-winning books. So I began and hummed along and then, boom, I was sucked in. I could not let go! Davina Porter as a narrator was a delight. Her voices and accents manifested a visual of characters I could not have done just reading the words off the page. That being said, this magical story of an evil puppeteer, a witch, and the three children thrown into a plot of corruption and dispair had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Laura Amy Schlitz proves to be a master storyteller.

So disappointing

I really wanted to like this book. I Really did. I've looked for another story by this author after reading "A drowned maiden's tale". I Loved that book. It hooked me from page one. So I was ready for more.

Was that a fluke, or this book a glitch? I Don't know.

All I know was that this book was really overwrought. So heavy handed. And after hours of listening and re-winding, I still don't know what the heck, is going on!

From flashes of a "witch" to a demonic puppet-master, to a lonely girl who lost here siblings to a terrible food poisoning. This story was all over the place. I just gave up.

Better luck next time. I still haven't given up on Schultz.

Great book!

There's something I just didn't expect to find out about Mr.X. Absolutely a great book.

Liar & Spy is a coming-of-age story dressed up as a mystery. Several mysteries, actually. All unconventional. All delightful.

Author Rebecca Stead finds the interesting in everything, be it Benjamin Franklin's reformed alphabet, peculiar fortune cookies, or the human tongue. It's hard to say where Rebecca ends and Georges (silent S) begins. A bit of Rebecca and Georges lives in all of us, I suspect, which may be why this book feels like time spent with an old friend.

Wait til you hear Jesse Bernstein's portrayal of Safer. It's a hoot. (That's right, a hoot.) It's a strange expression, if you think about it. I wonder what Georges would say about it...

Not a bad story...

All - in - all, it isnt a bad story at all! A little predicatable and the naration in some places was a little.... errrmmm... questionable, but overall is was fine.

It a memerable book and its fun! It's like an old pair of slipper, warm and kind and nice!

I read a lot of junior fiction in my job (senior school librarian), and this isnt in my top 10, but I would reccommend it to the kids to read.
