This was a beautiful and moving story I absolutely loved it.I recommend it to everyone.

Wolves can soar as high as there soul will carry.

A wonderful read even for adults but still feel little on the inside for anyone.

GREAT!

My children and I have a long commute in the morning and audiobooks in general have made this a much more pleasant experience. This series has been engaging for my 7 year old AND my 16 year old - keeping both of their attentions for the entire drive. Plus, they have learned a great deal of geography and culture from the series. I would highly recommend these books for anyone who listens to audiobooks with children and adults too!

Ruined by an Awful-- Even Offensive-- Narration

I enjoyed all the previous Nancy Drew books narrated by Laura Linney who is fantastic. I did not expect this narrator to be as good as Linney, but I didn't think she would be so awful. I listened to the sample, and I thought her voice pleasant enough. But in listening to the book, I discovered that this narrator has no clue about how to present different "voices." It would have been better had she just read the book straight; instead, she attempted to create characters through caricatures. Male characters were all petulant, for example. The most heinous offense, however, was that she turned Hannah Gruen, the Drews' housekeeper, into Butterfly McQueen through an outrageously stereotyped southern, African American accent! Apparently, Birschbach believes this novel was set in the pre-Civil War era and thinks of "the help" as Mammy figures. She read all of Gruen's verbs without the final G-- cookin' instead of cooking-- which is NOT how they're written! (Shouldn't the narrator read the text *as written*?) I kept expecting to hear Gruen saying, "Miss Nancy, yo's never gonna fit in 'dat dress..." Anyone who has read the books knows that Gruen is NOT this type of character. Even anyone who has not read the books should be able to figure out that a character named Gruen is not from the rural South! The horrible and miscast stereotyped voiced ruined this book. I could not finish it! This narration is disrespectful to the novels and the fans of the series.

disappointed in narrator

We've been listening to audiobooks for years. My kids and I particularly like the Nancy Drew series.

This is the first one we've been disappointed in, due solely to the narrator. She uses different voices for the characters. Some of the voices don't sound right or are overly exaggerated, and sometimes she gets mixed up and uses a different voice for a character than she used before. We usually get wrapped up in the story, but with those issues it would pull us right out, unfortunately.

I would suggest listening to more of this audiobook than is available in the sample (ie from a library?) before purchasing.

NO. The narrator's use of accents in characters' speech was VERY grating to both mine and my 8 year old daughter's nerves.

What did you like best about The Sign of The Twisted Candle? What did you like least?

My children enjoyed all these Nancy Drew audiobooks. Good for about age 11 and up.

The first few books were narrated by Laura Linney who did a fantastic job. I am sorry to say that the new narrator's pretending to be different people (strange voices) is actually distracting; hence the three stars.

I have enjoyed all of the Nancy Drew books and I am now sharing them with my children. We have enjoyed the audio versions narrated by Laura Linney. Danica Reese's narration, however, doesn't measure up....

I really wanted to enjoy this story since I've always loved Nancy Drew books. However, this narrator was terrible! You may want to check the sample audio clip before downloading it. She seems to get confused between the different voices at times which makes it confusing to tell who is talking. Also, all of the men sound like they have a terrible head cold.

Yes, b/c I had a concussion and could not read. Nancy Drew books are still my go-to (at the age of 45!!) when I am super-stressed.

It was just awful. Her voices/accents were ridiculous, and she was overly-dramatic.

Would you listen to The Sign of The Twisted Candle again? Why?

My granddaughters are 4 and 6 and my nephew is 8. We listened to this book in the car. They could not wait to get in the car and listen to their book. For those of you who have traveled long distances with young children, you know it can be quite challenging at times. However, with a good book to listen to, the trips are now a breeze. Nancy Drew provided suspense, but was written on a level that they could understand, but kept me interested as well. Often, there were teachable moments, too. They did not realize that when these books were written, there were no cell phones. This gave me an opportunity for a little history. The four year old was not quite as interested but she stayed quiet anyway. This book allowed the kids to use their imaginations, too. Also, Nancy is a kind and caring person. There is a moral to the story--and the bad guys always get caught. There is no killing or any of that gory stuff either. Like I said, the perfect story for younger children !!

Hannah is my favorite character. She is only the Drew housekeeper.

GREAT!

Wonderful story, although a bit slow for me, since I read quite fast. I'm enjoying Audible, but overall I prefer reading from actual books. The narrator is very detailed, I love it. I like how each cat has a different voice.

Great Series

I love the series so much, but it is not appropriate for kids. Too much blood and death and violence. And Crowfeather is a cat whore

You will become tired of this

I have read/listened the whole Warrior Cats series and found it interesting. However, in this book, things have changed a bit. The story is always the same and the characters in this book are too proud to admit defeat. And that's BORING. I mean, come on. Who would want to listen to an audio book about wild cats fussing over tiny problems ALL the time. This story can really interest you at first, but you would get tired of it in a few hours.

Excellent Audio Presentation

The reader of this book did an amazing job of reading the book with different voices for each character. Her skill in remembering each characters voice and providing just the right intonation and feeling made the book come to life. :o)

The book itself is also a great work of art because it helped us understand life for immigrants in the early 1900 through the eyes of a little girl much like my own.

narrator change not for the better

Story is good, but the narrator change left a lot to be desired. Not sure why Hal Hollings didn't continue the series but my whole family preferred his narration.

Would you consider the audio edition of Adventure According to Humphrey to be better than the print version?

No offense to William Dufris, but my kids and I listed to the Humphrey books 1-4, and we really got used to the narration by Hal Hollings. We listen to these stories in the car, and they never fail to engage and give us a laugh.

My kids basically wrinkled their noses when starting to listen to this book's narration. We'll have to get used to it, though, because it looks like Betty chose this narrator for all the other Humphrey books. Oh well! Maybe his voices for the women characters get better or maybe we'll just get used to it.

All of the According to Humphrey books are excellent reading. Before we started listening to them in the car, I read them out loud to my two boys - ages 6 and 7. It's refreshing to have such well-written children's books that can appeal to a wide range of kids and not include any foul language or inappropriate or really intense situations. Humphrey books are positive, positive, positive! And we love them all!

Did William Dufris do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, they all sound different, but all the female characters just sound - well - weird. We still haven't gotten used to that. I think he does a decent job with the voice of Humphrey.

Fine for Ten-Year-Olds

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The premise of the series is intriguing. I work as a teacher and Scholastic has worked hard to promote the series through school book fairs and book orders. After years of seeing the titles, I broke down and began to read the series. I appreciate the author's idea, as well as their obvious interest in history. However, I do not find the texts to be very intellectually stimulating.

While the content of the novel (or the entire series) is perfect for fifth graders -- the historical figures come directly out of fifth grade Social Studies textbooks -- the level of intellectual stimulation is fairly low. As a fifth grade teacher, I look for books that are going to stretch and grow my students are readers (and writers).

I look for characters that are developed across the chapters or books, characters that are not just one way, characters that change and evolve. The characters within these novels are fairly stagnant, experiencing seemingly very superficial evolutions despite experiencing rather dramatic events. I look for writing that offers itself as a coach. Haddix' writing style is rather simplistic, and does not offer many lessons. I look for books that require engagement across the pages, books that if you space out will no longer make sense. With this series, I have easily been able to check out for sometimes as long as ten minutes, and still be able to fully understand the plot.

Overall, I find the idea of the series fantastic. However, the execution is poor. I would recommend this as a challenge (Social Studies content-wise) to fourth graders or a pleasure read for fifth or sixth graders. I would not recommend it at all to adults, unless they were reading alongside their 9 or 10-year-old's.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

A decent cliffhanger. The next books in the series are not worth the investment, however. The only question readers seek at the end is who Jonah was in history. This question, as of the most recently released book, has not yet been answered. I've decided, after having read four of the books within the series, to wait until the book is released and the internet answers that question.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrator was okay. He overdid it when it came to voicing Catherine, making her sound like Disney child-actor at times.

Did Sent inspire you to do anything?

It made me think about how I would re-write the plot. Again, it is a really interesting idea, but was very poorly executed.

Any additional comments?

Not worth the money. If your child really wants to read it, have them check it out from the library. Most of my students have abandoned the series part way through the second book.

Suspenseful and a great book for youth to read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I really enjoyed this book.
