My 4 and 6 year old loved! Mom too!!

While we were listening on the drive to and from karate and soccer the kids would ask to stay in the car a little longer to keep listening. My oldest was disappointed at the end that we could not go and get the next one in the series (like say Harry potter). One warning in the beginning the father drowns which the details might be upsetting for my four year old so I fast forwarded a tad-and it didn't detract from the story not knowing how he died- and he is used to parents being dead as the set up for almost all children's books, and the orphan set up,

As close to a lullaby an adventure story could be

A great story I've listened to again and again for over three years. I don't get tired of it and sometimes use it as a cure for insomnia. The luxury of being read a story when an adult! Gaiman's soothing style lulls me to sleep.

A Viking Tale All Ages Will Love

I did this book as an Audible book simply because Neil Gaiman narrates it. Anything I can listen to read by him is always a treat.

In this book, young Odd is a Viking out of sorts with his people. An injury to his leg prohibits him from going on a long journey - something most male vikings do - and his stepfather doesn't like him very much. As such, Odd decides to run away to his father's old hut out in the woods, but when he gets there, he encounters a bear, an eagle and a fox who have the ability to talk!

Odd soon discovers these creatures are more than what they seem, and he is swept away on a magical journey to Asgard where he must defeat the Frost Giants or leave Midgard to suffer an eternal winter.

This book is a wonderful coming-of-age tale told in Gaiman's unique storytelling. He's able to take Norse mythology and bring it to a modern-day telling without losing any of the magic associated with it and yet making it accessible to all ages.

Brilliant

It's Neil Gaiman reading his short about Odd and the Norse God's. He wrote this I believe in 24 hours and it is fantastic and i really wonder if not the inspiration for How To Train Your Dragon.

Neil Gaiman is a story teller

Mr Gaiman has an incredible imagination and it seems to carry him off like a treasure seeking Frost Giant. I actually can not imagine any other narrator for his stories because only he knows where all the dramatic pauses and interjection nuances belong.

Odd grows up in this unusual tale.

Heartbreakingly Wonderful

This is a heartbreakingly wonderful story that is perfectly narrated. What more is there to say? Read it or listen to it. The author's characters are so believable and the narrator perfectly captures Gilly's personality. Great book for middle grades and up!

The audio connection was not very good

Great Book for Mature YA Reader

Although it is an easy read, I would only recommend this book to mature YA readers or adults due to the language and topics mentioned (racism, abandonment, religion, etc.). The story itself is enchanting as it follows a tough 11-year-old girl, seeking to find "home".

Not age appropriate

Too much negativity and language. Ended sadly too. I do not recommend for anyone under the age of 15.

Sharing with my daughter

One of my favorite books of all time and now I get to share it with my daughter!

The narrator has a beautiful and expressive voice. It was a bit difficult to tell sometimes whether Gilly was saying something out loud or just thinking it to herself.

Wrath of the Bloodeye

This was excellent! I have physically read the other "Last Apprentice" books and was hesitant to listen to this one but I am delighted with it. the author kept the listeners attention and the reader, Welch, did an excellent job narrating it. I will keep following this author via audiobooks rather than purchasing the physical copy. It is much more interesting.

Great YA Spooky Series

This is a great series. Unfortunately, Audible has dropped the ball on this one. While they have books 1, 2, and 3... this is not book 4, it's book 5, and book 4 (The Last Apprentice: Attack of the Fiend) is currently found nowhere on the site.

So if you are going for the whole series be prepared to miss one, or read it in print.

Scary! Better than Potter, IMO

I know a lot of people won't agree with me on the "better than Potter" comment, but I enjoy it much more. I've read all of the Potter books, but this series is more appealing to my tastes. I still find it funny that it's geared towards kids, because each of the books in the Apprentice series has some seriously frightening stuff in them. Enough to frighten this horror-story seasoned adult...

I hope Delaney keeps on turning them out. I'll keep on buying!

Gives a new light to the books

I have read all the books but now coming back and giving it a listen with all the voices he dose for every one. It's like I'm reading it all for the first time Again. It's a wonderful series and I'm defiantly gunna need to cheak out his others

Must listen

Our family (kids 12,14) loves this series. The performance is extraordinary and makes the listen all the better.

Feeling at home

I loved this book. It helps preteens and teens learn about self acceptance. I teach 5th grade and happy to add this to my classroom library.

Touching and well-written

I hate this book. The book has no detail once so ever. The book is terrible.

one of the best books and I loved the readers voice. she knew exactly when to get loud and when to soften her voice. perfect!

Not our fav!

It was easier for me to follow as a parent, an older generation, and someone who has that vision of what's happening as the story goes on. My daughter who is going into 7th grade was asked to read this. We read it together so I could explain what was happening in different parts of the story. My daughter feels it was a bit confusing in the beginning to towards the middle, but then felt things were starting to make sense as the end wrapped it all in. We are foster parents so we see a lot of what was going on in this story. I feel the recommended age for this book should be 14 or 15 years old. It did bounce around between pictures and chapters so that can tend to confuse a child. But the plot of the story was good. And a child should always feel part of a family!

A splendid reading of the classic!

Howard Pyle was the writer who put together stray tales of the English outlaw and created the narrative of Robin Hood we know today. His original novel is still great fun -- it took my kids (ages 9 & 10) a little while to get used to the language, but then they absolutely loved it. They've been acting out scenes and cracking themselves up. The narrator of this edition, Christopher Cazenove, is spot-on perfect for the material, too.

A PURE PLEASURE

This was a wonderful listen! The chapters (linked short stories) recount how Robin Hood comes to be an outlaw in Sherwood Forest, meets the key members of his band, and merrily adventures with them in and around Sherwood Forest in twelfth-century England. Howard Pyle's book has many impressive and pleasing points, among them:

exciting story-telling, rollicking lust for life, savory conversations, compelling songs, apt aphorisms, beautiful descriptions of nature, irreverent chastising of corrupt authority figures, interesting figures of speech (comparing, for example, the swift passing of Robin's anger to a breath on a window pane or the slow brain of a cobbler to a ball of unbaked bread dough), great humor (ranging from comical slapstick to witty banter and funny irony), and thoughtful movement from the light-hearted merriment of youth to the joy and grief of nostalgic maturity.

Christopher Cazenove reads with a clear voice and a charming manner and an effective range of accents and moods for the various characters, among them the good-hearted and stout Robin, the brawny and faithful Little John, the refined Will Scarlet, the querulous Sheriff of Nottingham, and the bestial bandit Guy of Gisbourne. Cazenove even remains in each character's voice as he sings the occasional catchy or lovely folk ballads. He infuses his reading with such meaning, humor, and life that listening to this audiobook was a pure pleasure that made me smile and laugh and finally moved me to tears.

A Delight!

This great classic is a wonderful read for anyone who loves the adventure and vivid characters found in the novels of Dumas or the wit and whimsy discovered in those of Twain. Reading Pyle's Robin Hood is like taking the two together in one mighty draft of fine literature!

Great Fun!

This is considered a "kid's book." But much like with The Hobbit, it's written so much better than a lot of adult novels today. Sign of the times, I suppose. But as a kid's book, this puts aside the grim and gritty of today's fare and gives the reader something fun and truly wonderful. I've grown up reading this book, and to hear it via Audible is a treat.

Each chapter is a self-contained event, often with the next chapter building making a callback to the previous ones as a reminder.

The stories are aimed at kids so they are in bite size chunks my kids can enjoy a whole story or part.

Good, but needs story titles

My daughter has used "Your Story Hour" books via cassettes for years with various children. Unfortunately, some have been ruined in the cassette players. She asked me to put them on CDs for more usability and durability. However, the conversion process using the computer is relatively straightforward, but it takes a lot of time (realtime) and requires adding the story titles. When I discovered the volumes being available on Audible at a reasonable price, I pursued using an MP3 player (SanDisk Fuse with Griffin Power Dock) as an alternative. The setup seems to work very well using my separately connected laptop speakers, but I am very disappointed in not having the story titles (individual sections/chapters) downloaded or editable for use on the MP3. The result is the display showing the number of the section (e.g., 3 of 12), but easily sequenced forward and backward. This necessitates having an external printed table of content. This is a real bummer (quoting my daughter). However, the download and upload onto the MP3 is reasonably quick. My daughter and children are very happy with the stories, although with the old cassettes. The sound quality with the MP3 is outstanding. The Digital Rights protection is very annoying since it prevents editing the titles, but the limitations of installing on various devices is not an issue with us. Otherwise, I recommend.

great character building stories

This is a great set of stories! Learn history and be inspired at the same time. Highly recommended!

Amazing Inspiring Moral Story

If you want to help instil correct principles and values for your children this is definitely the way to go. The stories are fun, exciting, inspiring, thought provoking, challenging and so much more not just for children and youth but for all ages and all the family. The best ever stories I have listened to. I am working my way up to the whole collection, so far I have Great stories vol 1, 4, 5, 6 & some of the Bible series as well as Patterns of Destiny and Acts of the Apostles. Can't rate them enough. They are a true blessing

The Guardian Series is Excellent!

My eight-year old and I listened to the first eight Guardians of Ga'Hoole books and enjoyed them all immensely. Being a bird lover, these tales are especially fun and for weeks on end, our world became the world of the Guardians. Pamela Garelick's narration is very good; only her voice for Gyflie was a bit annoying (the voice was very high) though I got used to it. Unfortunately, the next seven books have not yet been recorded so we're reading them ourselves!

Well written, engaging and entertaining.

What can I say, my daughter loves Ivy and Bean. I like it to. Pretty funny sometimes. There was a scene in this volume that had the whole family laughing out loud.

Would you listen to Joey Pigza Loses Control again? Why?

I use this in my 4th grade reading group. My students love to mix things up and listen to the author read instead of me. It really keeps their attention. I love seeing them get 'sucked in' to the book!

Is it as good as the first

It is even better than the original the only bad stuff I can say about this book is the story comes in a bit to late and Joey's dad has no charter at all. GET THIS BOOK NOW!!!!!!!!! It is so good

We love Joey Pigza and everything that happens to him. I teach special needs students and if we are listening to a Joey Pigza story, they freeze and listen! We are going to listen to the next book "What Would Joey Do?" after listening to the first two books!!!
