A great story and one that continues to establish Ms. Taylor as an accurate historian and storyteller for this era. Her characters are well-developed, sometimes complex, but all with qualities that everyone can identify with. I highly recommend her books, especially for children or adults who are not familiar with this era in African-American history.

My son has read this book twice already and he is typically not one to pull out a book to read. I remember reading books by this author when I was a child. Very good stories.

The Well

The Well is a book that works into lesson plans for Black History month very easily.

The author of the book helps elementary age students understand the racial tension that reached its tenacles far beyond the Civil War and made the Civil Rights Movement in our nation a necessity.

I would encourage every teacher to have a classroom set of this book to use to help explain that hatred and racism can be overcome. It may take years, but each small victory is simply a rung in the ladder to success.

Read it, I think you'll agree.

Virginia is for (Mystery) Lovers

audiobook 4.5 - book 1

Where was this book when my sons were the same ages as these characters?!

I enjoyed the throwback story and style from when I was growing up with Trixie Beldon, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and authors like Ruth Chew - where children found treasure, maps, clues, and explored their world.

This was a very fun book and one most elementary youngsters could enjoy.

Note: No new age technology and simple family dynamics.

Tidbits of history - some real, some not - are scattered throughout. Very subtle but it also adds depth.

4.5 stars because there were small inconsistencies

It seems to be a solid stand alone.

Narration complemented the audience and story telling.

Not as enjoyable as the first. Caitlin, a classmate, was a new addition to the young brothers and quite likable.

Patrick Henry still has a cameo thread to the mystery with relation to the George Wythe, a lesser known signer of the Declaration of Independence.

There were instances I had to replay scenes because it seemed like the Derrick was acting like Sam or vice versa.

The book blurb of comparing this series to The Magic Tree house is misleading.

The third book in the series seems to lose its luster.

This story takes place the summer following the previous book. Although the boys have aged, they still act as young as they had in the first book.

After a morning ride to Belle Isle, Sam is thrown from his bike when older boys ride past him and cut him off.

Another great book!

My 8 year old daughter loved this story and I think it was her favorite so far out of the Super Hero High books. It is a neat tale about the relationship between Katana and her grandmother. She goes on a lot of adventures as the story unfolds about the samurai legends and swords. My daughter likes to read these books herself and then have her father and I read them to her. Lisa Yee does a great job with these books. We've loved all of them. They encourage young girls to read and feel confident and strong. Each super hero has her own special strengths and weaknesses and the character has a lot of growth throughout the book.

Good addition to the series.

Good addition to the series. Katana is not a character I know well, and in the series she is one of the more quiet ones. I liked getting to know more of her story. I think these can be read in any order, and I love that they highlight one character in particular in each book. But when you read them in order, you do understand the references to past events better.

A Young Teen's Review

I have read all the Super Hero Girls books from Wonder Woman to Katana, and I found them to be very enjoyable. Once again, Lisa Yee did a fantastic job with the storyline which mainly revolved around sword-wielding Katana. I couldn't put the book down because it was filled with suspense, some humor and a lot of action.
