This is a fabulously ingenious method of painlessly weaving clues and fractions, into a Kung Fu mystery ...

Joy, Sam, Amy, and Adam were watching Sifu Faiza demonstrate a Kung Fu move with swords with Sigung. She showed them the start of the move and the ending, but left out one of the parts. Sifu said, "If you only learn the starting and stopping positions, you're missing 1/3 of the move. The kids were all anxious to learn how to work the swords and were told that in that particular form there were 9 moves. They were 3/9 or 1/3 of the way through and Adam claimed that "Sword practice makes my wrists sore." They took a break to take a look at Sifu's Kung Fu journal to see if they could solve some of the puzzles her grandfather wrote down. It appeared that the puzzle was incomplete and there was an aura of mystery surrounding the puzzle.

The next puzzle, figuring out the portions of a sports drink to have with their snack, was easy in comparison, but they still had to think. After they figured out the recipe, they had to figure out how to divide the mixture in fourths so everyone would get a cup. After snack time, Amy talked to Sifu Faiza about needing help with Sifu's grandfather's puzzle. Sifu said, "Everyone needs help sometimes. Even Kung Fu masters, like Sigung and me. Ask others for help when we're learning something new." Sifu Lelung Jan was a respected Kung Fu master, but he wanted to keep his formula for Jow, "Chinese medicine for Kung Fu students" a secret and had carved the formula into an ivory disc.

This formula was the "puzzle" that everyone was having difficulty understanding as the formula was in eight wedges. Sifu Lelung carved the other side to look like a clock and burned his notes, but the formula was eventually stolen. They had a group discussion, but because they were still stuck Sifu decided it was time to take a break. Soon it was back to working with the swords, but Sigung had a sudden burst of anger when Miranda walked through the door. She had two pieces of the puzzle in hand, but was not to be trusted. Sigung was angry because she had stolen Sifu Leung's formula. There was a little evil lurking about because they would find that Miranda was up to no good. Would they eventually be able to find the missing pieces to the puzzle and figure out what the long lost formula was?

This is a fabulously ingenious method of painlessly weaving clues and fractions, into a Kung Fu mystery. Most likely by the time most youngsters read this book they have been at least introduced to the concept of fractions. When they are incorporated into this mystery, the visuals of seeing them in action make them very easy to grasp. For example, we the mysterious disc is divided into a pie graph.

High Energy, Fast Paced, Good Humored Florida Showmanship

I like middle grade heroes who always have a plan or a scheme or a wacky angle, but if they aren't done right they can become creepy, tiresome or obnoxious. Grabenstein knows exactly how to do such characters, and so this second installment in the Wonderland series is as outlandish and upbeat as the first.

Our two heroes are P.T., (named after P.T. Barnum), whose the fast talking idea man, and Gracie, who's the brains, planner, and financial officer for P.T.'s schemes. They are a well oiled machine, and it is a pleasure to see two great friends sharing equal time in a book like this. The kids are smart and resourceful, and the balance between practical Gracie and outside-the-box P.T. keeps the book racing along on an even keel.

It seems we're always trying to save the old family motel, and this time around the plan turns on making it the location for a surfer dude rom-com movie. So, you get P.T.'s schemes, a few villains trying to bring down the motel, touchy actors, a surfing monkey, and many, many complications.

But as before, we also get a lot of quick thinking, fast shuffling, improv, and antic action. That said, nothing about these books is dumb or patronizing. There are a lot of funny and perceptive throwaway lines, a few groaners, and a good deal of snappy dialogue.

The story is really cute and enjoyable to listen to. I would love to have more stories like this. I wish the author would create more books like this.

This book is amazing. It is creative how the pokemon came to earth. I really like this book. I suggest it to any pokemon lovers or want-to-be pokemon lovers.

I have Pokemon games, Pokemon printed stuff and so it completely made sense that I got this book too. I am completely crazy about Pokemons. But its just not my personal love for Pokemon; the book has a great and exhilarating story and I really recommend this to everyone.

Whole series review

Doma Publishing's Wizard of Oz collection has taken me several years to read with my son at bedtime. It was interesting revisiting the texts that I read swiftly through my youth, as I was about his age when I read them and remembered little beyond some of the characters that don't appear in any of the books. I picked up a copy of this version since, for 99c, I could have the complete series along with "All the original artwork by the great illustrator W.W. Denslow (over 1,000 classic illustrations)", and to read the complete 14-book text at bedtime with all original color illustrations on my Kindle Fire knowing that there would be cross-linked tables of contents and no layout issues, it was worth my buck rather than taking them all out of the library. We read these books before bed at home and under the stars by a campfire in the forest, in a hotel in Montreal and in a seaside cottage in Nova Scotia, on a boat and in a car. We read it everywhere, thanks to the Kindle's mobility.

You may be reading this review on one of the individual pages for the original books on Goodreads or Amazon, and if so, all I did was cross-link the books along with the correct dates we read the original texts. The only book I did not cross-link with original dates was the Woggle-bug book, which if you know, is short. Instead, I counted that final book as the review for Doma's Kindle version. You may notice that some books have longer reading spans â probably for two reasons. One, I traded off reading with my wife sometimes, and two, sometimes we needed a little Baum break and read some other books. It did get a little old sometimes, and there are fourteen books totaling 3500 pages in their original library printing.

The first thing I think is worth mentioning is that when I first read these books, it was as a child would read them. I remember them being repetitive but familiar. Comforting and revealing. An antiquated adventure, but a serial adventure with recurring characters unparalleled in any other literature. As an adult with an MA in literature (and soon and MFA in fiction), I am actually somewhat unimpressed with the series. Baum wrote a whimsical set of tales, but they are torturously repetitive and would be easy to plug-and-play by replacing characters and moments with a computer to make an entirely new book. But, they are children's books, and we are completely enthralled and comforted by the familiar.

Beautiful book, good for children to learn some of his different statements. That is ehat this book is. Don't think it is a book about Lincoln. A book of speeches he made.

Another winner from Doreen Rappaport and Kadir Nelson!

I bought this book because I love both the illustrator and the author. Nelson's illustrations never cease to amaze me - I often think of cutting them out and them in my house!! "Abe's Honest Words" definitely measures up toMartin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., also by Rappaport. I love the unique perspective that she brings to these well known historical figures. My husband used this book to teach a lesson on integrity to his third grade class and it was well received - can't wait to use this one in my fifth grade classroom as well!

Must Have!

Children are facinated with our presidents who were assasinated, and they really enjoy reading about Abraham Lincoln, the president who was instrumental in freeing the slaves.

This book has beautiful illustrations and is written really well. Add to this Lincoln's own words, and it becomes a 'must have'. I read this book aloud to 21 first graders and you could have heard a pin drop. They hung on every word. They were allowed to ask questions when finished, and these youngsters had many questions, ranging from inacuracies they had heard- to,"What happened to the man who killed Abraham Lincoln?" Great book!!

She loved it.

I gave this to a 7 year old who likes to read about presidents. She loved it.
