    Title: Baree

    Author: James Oliver Curwood
    Narrator: Patrick Lawlor
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-26-04
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 22 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
The wolves were treacherous, but Baree soon learns that humans can be much worse. He is shot, beaten, and trapped, and soon learns to take care of himself. After fighting alone against the world, he befriends an Indian maiden, Nepeese, and he finds his purpose in life.
Baree: The Wolf-Dog is one of James Oliver Curwood's most cherished works.
    Editorial Reviews:
The orphan Baree belongs to no world. The wolf packs see him as a dog while the humans see him as a wolf, and both groups treat him mercilessly. When Baree meets a little human girl, though, he finds his home with her. In the tradition of Jack London, James Oliver Curwood penned great adventure tales about the animals he knew well as a tracker. Patrick Lawlor gives an excited performance, utilizing fun accents and snarling voices. Lawlor balances compassion and action sequences, so that the listener feels both empathy for Baree's plight and hooked on every word.
    Critic Reviews:
"A timeless tale....Curwood captures the simplicity and beauty of Nature without becoming sentimental." (ALA Booklist)

this was a fabulous book to listen to - great for both my children (ages 11 and 12) and exciting for me too! Curwood's descriptions are breathtaking, and the suspense and drama of this tale made it a nail-biter until the very end. I highly recommend it, and hope that audible will make other stories by Curwood available soon.
    A wilderness adventure
In searching the internet, from what I can gather this book was published 1917. Years ago, I inherited about a dozen books that were mostly written in the early 1900's. This wasn't one of them, but because it was written by James Oliver Curwood, who wrote a couople of the other books I inhereted, I thought it would be good. It is great!
Becuase it takes time, I usually only write a review for books that I find are outstanding and are not reviewed by many other people. Since this book is outstanding, and no one reviewed yet, I thought I would take the time to write a review.
This book is about a wolf-dog (hence the title). There are not many people in this book, and they are not mentioned often. The author seems to have a wonderful understanding of animals.
The audio version of the book starts out with an introduction that gives some interesting information on the author (James Oliver Curwood). I wish more books by this author, and more books of this type, were available as audio books.
I will close by saying that currently the written version of this book has eight written reviews on amazon.com - they are all 5 stars; you can read them for more details. I would recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in animals and in the wilderness that existed in the early 1900's.

Worth listening to more than once if you are a wildress and animal lover.

    Great book!
My daughter loved this book! She hates to read but loved this book. She's been bullied and was able to relate to the main character. It made her realize she's not alone and that there was nothing wrong with her to cause her to be bullied. She loved this book so much that she gave it to a friend for a birthday present. That young lady loved it too! This should be a must read for all girls!
    Great story
This is a very well written story told from the perspective of five young girls. The story gives an account of an event and each chapter is told from the point of view of each of the girls. When I first read it, I couldn't put the book down. It was so interesting and the author has a good feel for the way girls at this age think. I am a teacher and I bought a class set and used it for two years in my Middle School classroom. I used it to teach about point of view, characterization, theme, and bullying. I created an entire unit from this book. My students, who are not very thrilled about reading, really enjoyed the story. Each day that we read together, they would beg to keep reading even though the period was almost over.
Perfect for a book club or small group discussion
It's odd how girls connect with the characters in this book. No one ever feels that she is the bully, even when others can point to her as THE ONE. Each can relate to the girl who is being bullied, and to feeling the pressure to "go along" or risk ostracism. Perfect for a book club or small group discussion.
    Great book for kids.
I use this book with my class. Itâs great. It will stir many emotions in kids and adults. Good read.
    well worth the read
My teen daughters told me this book was the only one that 'got it right.' Social strife occurs over little things, and manifests in the nuances of daily interaction. A good read for pre-teen girls as well as their parents.

Bull Run was the site of the first battle of the Civil War. This book creates an intimate tapestry of stories from blacks and whites, adults and children, leaders and families from the North and South. Broken dreams and bloodshed take you back to the front lines of the Battle of Bull Run, where common soldiers - not the heroes who grace the covers of history books and are synonymous with the glory of the war - risked their lives.

Very entertaining with excellent voice acting.
I enjoyed how the story was told from several varied perspectives. it's funny, sad and sobering at the same time.
    Great book!
I wanted a book I could share with my fourth grade students in reading that could enhance their study of the Civil War. The story is engaging and I think they will gain a perspective that textbooks cannot offer.
    Interesting performance and background
This brief book is performed by a variety of voices, which I found to make the presentation interesting. The performance puts the story in context and presents the war in a realistic fashion. I found this informative and historically interesting.
    Excellent reading
Having this on audio, and having our 6th grader read the book along with the audio playing made the book come to life, and the characters come to life. The book did a great job of showing many different perspectives.

    Publisher's Summary:
A girl's friendship with a lonely black hole leads her to face her own sadness in this original, funny, and touching middle grade novel for fans of Crenshaw and Flora & Ulysses.
When 11-year-old Stella Rodriguez shows up at NASA to request that her recording be included in Carl Sagan's Golden Record, something unexpected happens: A black hole follows her home and sets out to live in her house as a pet. The black hole swallows everything he touches, which is challenging, to say the least - but also turns out to be a convenient way to get rid of those items that Stella doesn't want around. Soon the ugly sweaters her aunt has made for her all disappear within the black hole, as does the smelly class hamster she's taking care of, and, most important, all the reminders of her dead father that are just too painful to have around.
It's not until Stella; her younger brother, Cosmo; the family puppy; and even the bathroom tub all get swallowed up by the black hole that Stella comes to realize she has been letting her own grief consume her. And that's not the only thing she realizes as she attempts to get back home. This is an astonishingly original and funny adventure with a great big heart.

    A wonderful story for everyone!!
This book is INCREDIBLE! A young girl who unobtrusively loves science and space has to contend with an untamed mini-black hole that unexpectedly appears in her life. It's a wild journey not just through spacetime but through Stella's emotional universe as well. Cuevas has a refreshingly creative and playful way of telling a REALLY GOOD STORY, complete with true suspense and an unpredictable outcome. I enjoyed the book just as much as my kids did!! Cannot recommend enough!
    EXCELLENT Middle Grade Read!
What do you do when you have a student in your class who eats, sleeps and BREATHES all things space? Well, if you are lucky to come across a book review about a girl your students' age who is also crazy about all things space you order it pronto. The Care and Feeding of a Pet Black Hole is a quick, quirky read with an unusual mix of levity and depth that both surprised me and kept me turning the pages from the first to the last in one sitting. The whimsical art sprinkled throughout added another layer of storytelling, and the pitch black pages in the middle of the book made a bold statement about how Stella really was feeling. I loved how she was telling the story to one very special person (read the book to find out who...I'm no spiller of the beans!)
This is a story of loss, a road map to finding your new normal after a black hole hovers around you, and about accepting yourself--warts and all. I fell in love with every character in this book; again, this is an unusual discovery in a middle grade book and reason enough for me to put the young author, Michelle Cuevas, on my radar. And, hey! That space loving kiddo I told you about at the beginning? He's gonna eat this one up, but so will all the rest of my kids, too. Read this one immediately, folks! You won't be sorry. Highly recommended!
My home was not a bathtub. My home was not in the depths of the blackest black hole.
    So what was it then?
Was it like the crossword puzzles you used to love? In the puzzle called Home" would clues lead me to the answers? Bedroom. Kitchen. Garage. Swings. Table. Fresh. Baked.

    Awesome book
Love these books. My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this is one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems also seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.
I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.
    We love this series
We love this series. We own maybe 9-10 different tittles. My 7 year old and me like to read them together. We've learned a lot of interesting facts about important figures and historic moments as well as current.
    A great ballplayer and humanitarian
This is my son's first book from the Who Was...series, and he really enjoyed it. I had told him a bit about Roberto Clemente a few years ago but this gave him more details. I read some of it myself and can see it is well-written and informative. The Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein books are next!
