    Title: The Unfinished Angel
    Author: Sharon Creech
    Narrator: Samantha Quan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-22-09
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
In the ancient stone tower of the Casa Rosa, in a tiny village high in the Swiss Alps, life for one angel has been the same, well, for as long as she (or he?) can remember. Until Zola arrives, a determined American girl who wears three skirts all at once. For neighbors who have been longtime enemies, children who have been lost, and villagers who have been sleepily living their lives: hold on. Zola and the angel are about to collide. Figs start flying, dogs start arfing, and the whole village begins to wake up. Zola is a girl with a mission. And our angel has been without one - till now.
This hilarious and endearing novel by Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech reminds us that magic is found in the most ordinary acts of kindness.
    Editorial Reviews:
Whimsical music opens this delightful and most worthwhile tale. Narrator Samantha Quan is outstanding as the nameless angel who watches over a village in the Swiss Alps. The angel speaks broken English with a heavy Italian accent. He also uses odd words or gropes for the correct word very humorously. All is vigorously presented by Quan. She makes funny sound effects such as "boom-boom-boom" to illustrate bratty Vinny's incessant drum playing. Her animal sounds are both realistic and mirthful. Listeners will be both entertained and enriched by this unusual short novel.

  • Missee Lee Audiobook by Arthur Ransome

    Title: Missee Lee
    Subtitle: Swallows and Amazons Series
    Author: Arthur Ransome
    Narrator: Alison Larkin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-10-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 26 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
They make their way to land, only to find themselves the captives of one of the last remaining pirates operating off the China Coast. But Missee Lee, as it turns out, is no ordinary pirate; her father had sent her off to Cambridge University to prepare her for a life as a teacher. But when her father takes ill and dies, she finds herself struggling to hold together the Three Island Confederation (Tiger, Turtle, and Dragon) he had created, and to be recognized as his legitimate heir and ruler of the Island Kingdom.
Ransome is, as always, the consummate storyteller. Here he takes the listener not only on the usual sailing adventures and cliff-hanging escapades, but also into Chinese culture. (It's no accident that, like so many of Ransome's protagonists, Missee Lee is a woman, or that her Latin is almost as refined as her sailing skills.) It is also no wonder that The Observer called this, the 10th book in the series, "his best yet...a book to buy, to read, and to read again, not once but many times". The Guardian put it "in a class by itself". For Ransome, unlike so many writers of his and our generation, was particular in writing about things he knew and had studied first-hand, whether it was a foreign culture, a classical language, a cryptographic code, or the finer points of seamanship.
(All 12 novels in the Swallows and Amazons series have been brought to life in the U.S. in print by David R. Godine, Publisher.)
    Members Reviews:
This could be more offensive and boring
I have read the rest of the series as text, and find I far prefer it to this narrator. This is not the best story. They're away from the boats and have limited agency for much of the book, so it's a different type of adventure: an exoticized account of cooling their heels in China and doing Latin lessons. Sounds fun?
Larkin is shouty, especially for Captain Flint. She regularly misplaces the emphasis or tone of a sentence, and there were some whoppers of mispronunciation. (Bimeby is a dialect variant of "by and by" and pronounced accordingly. Look it up before you say an unknown word 50 times?)
The Chinese characters are written with stereotypical pidgin or exaggerated accents including consistent difficulty pronouncing R, even the Cambridge educated one. The narrator's performance of these is a non-stop embarrassment.

    Good...Cass's voice irritating.
I have read this book before in print, and was excited to try out the audio book with it, particularly when I found it was read by a full cast. I enjoyed most things of it, the plot was good, and the full cast was a treat. However, Cass's voice constantly grated on my nerves! Considering Cass is the main character, this quickly got annoying. She was forever speaking in a "whatever" teenage, disrespectful voice to everyone. This is not how I pictured my Cass, and it made her seem more catty than she actually is.
Overall, and excellent audiobook. The man voicing Pseudonymous Bosch was fantastic for a narrator, and it did not disappoint completely. If Cass had been voiced by a different person, this book would have been fantastic.
Good job, just next time, please pick someone else!
    I couldn't even finish this
Too much jumping around, loose ends, dumb plot twists. I couldn't even finish this - not for me.

A request by my granddaughter for Christmas. She took it home with her to read.
    It was okay
It was not one of my favorites but it was enjoyable,I am reading all of the ''Allie Finkles rules for girls'' and this one was probably the worst so far and that is why I gave this a 3/5 star rating but it was okay
    cute book
Daughter really liked this series. Below her reading level so i read to her. I did omit some of the sentences/ words due to it being a little too mature for 6 year old. Best suited for 10 years or so, in order to understand some of the subject and humor.
    Amazing
This book teaches a good lesson that you can't always get what you want. It is a funny book about a girl named Allie and what goes on in her life. This book goes with a whole series also about Allie and her fun adventures. I give it 5 full stars!

Life has always been simple at the Keep, and the orphanage safe, until one day, Ian and Theo find a silver treasure box. And within the box, a prophesy. Three thousand years ago a great Greek oracle wrote of a quest. A quest on which the fate of the world depends. A quest that names two children: Ian and Theodosia.
Suddenly Delphi Keep is no longer safe. And Ian and Theo, along with a very special group of friends, realize they must unravel the meaning behind the scroll of Dover cavern before darkness falls on the world. And before an unfathomable evil catches up with them.

    Wow!
Thanks for Victoria! This book is a thriller and I can't wait for the rest of the series. How soon?
    I loved this book!
This is an outstanding fantasy book! It is full of wonderful characters, adventure, and danger. I love books about magic and the supernatural, and this one fits the bill. I was riveted! The characters were very human and vulnerable but very courageous. I didn't want to stop listening. Victoria Laurie has written other great books, but this one is a classic.
Susan Duerden's portrayal of the characters is wonderful. She grabbed my attention and held it. I was amazed at her ability to create so many different voices.
The only complaint I have is that when I came back to Audible to look for the next book in the series, it wasn't here. Audible, please bring us Victoria's next book, The Curse of Deadman's Forest, and use Susan as the reader again! Thanks!
    Don't miss this one
This was a pleasant surprise. Full of Fantasy, action and suspense. Loved the characters! Hope there is a sequel!
    excellent and scarey
I enjoyed this book so much. It had a lot of scenes that had me biting my nails. It was so good and an excellent reader. I can not wait to read the next book in this hopeful series. I hope it continues.
    Wonderfully imaginative...

This was a birthday present for a 13 year old girl. She wants more because these books are so good!
    Great reads for girls
I got this for my niece and she loved reading this author. Recommend it for teenagers to read for pleasure. Great gift idea
    the great scavenger hunt
ok, the back of the book gives a good description. I didn't like it how all of the BSG [except for Charlotte and Katani] blew off the scavenger hunt without even caring. I didn't like how Kiki was too kind and i didn't like the excessive dialogue of Betsy Fitzgerald. katani's sister patrice leads katani's team and patrice is kind of obnoxious and overly followed. one thing that I DID like was that you get to meet Fabiana Montoya and Ben Briggs. overall it was an ok book just kind of annoying

    Publisher's Summary:
Born into the household of a wealthy slave owner in Cuba in 1797, Juan Francisco Manzano spent his early years by the side of a woman who made him call her Mama, even though he had a mama of his own. Denied an education, young Juan still showed an exceptional talent for poetry. His verses reflect the beauty of his world, but they also expose its hideous cruelty.
Powerful, haunting poems create a portrait of a life in which even the pain of slavery could not extinguish the capacity for hope.

Engle beautifully captures the life of Juanito, a Cuban slave with a talent and passion for words
In The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano, Margarita Engle beautifully captures the life of Juanito, a slave in Cuba with a talent and passion for words. Juanito is smart. He can memorize verses, songs, plays simply by listening. He can then recite them off the top of his head. His owner, Doña Beatriz, keeps him as an entertaining pet. The other slave owners call him the âGolden Beakâ because of his amazing ability to recite from memory. After Doña Beatriz dies, Juanito is given to La Marquesa de Prado Ameno, a woman who does not find him amusing and is instead bent on punishing him. Juanitoâs family is given freedom, but he remains enslaved. The violence he endures eventually forces him to escape. Throughout all the time, Juanitoâs love for words never wavered, but instead, he taught himself to read and write.
Juan Francisco Manzanoâs biography in verse is an important contribution to the retelling of Latin American history. At first, his owners found his recitations entertaining because they did not believe that he understood what he repeated, but eventually Manzano learned the power of words and would construct his own poems and stories. However, this new understanding of words led to many years of physical and emotional abuse. Engle does not romanticize slavery in this text. Her verses help readers feel Juanitoâs innocence and his genuine interest for words. At the same time, Engleâs verses feel painful when Juanito gets whipped. Juanitoâs life story is told through the voices of those in his life. The different voices paint a bigger picture of Juanitoâs life. His motherâs death is more sorrowful, for example, because their voices formed a part in telling Juanitoâs story. Engleâs verses are accompanied by artwork by Sean Qualls. There is something about the art that is also beautiful and sad.
The Poet Slave of Cuba broaches the subject of slavery in Latin America unlike any other text Iâve come across in Latinx childrenâs and young adult literature. Engleâs verses helps put a human face to those who were oppressed, abused, and killed by slavery.

    Unnecessary and distracting background music.
The "background music" was so loud it overpowered the narrator. Who wants music in an audiobook, anyway? Either the producer/director/publisher of the audiobook didn't believe the narrator was good enough to carry it off (and I can't comment on that, since the narrator's track was inaudible above the din of mood music), or they believed the listener couldn't follow the plot without some assistance. Either way, this was a waste of a book credit. Sad, too, because Stine's writing is so enjoyable.
great book, a must have for goosebumps fans.
this book was great. I got it for the nostalgia. I'm a 90s kid and grew up reading goosebumps and fear street. I find most of Mr Stines books are great. I love his books based in camps the most because I never went to camp as a kid.
