Mix the Circus and a Murder Mystery

Creepy (but not-scary) murder mystery filled with circus-like characters. I wouldn't recommend it for young children, but its an interesting story with an unexpected twist at the end! The narrator was great.

I can't believe I finished it.

normally I adore children adventure stories but for some reason this one was really hard to get into. The overall performance was bland and all the characters sounded alike. aside from that the story was predictable except for the fact that even though these children are supposedly extraordinary and gifted they didn't remotely act like how children would react. I will not be continuing the series.

Interesting concept but did not hold my attention long. Struggled to finish, but got better at the end...much better.

I purchase 2 for 1 so I will try the next in series but I don't think I'll move beyond that.

Pretty classic Clue type of story..nothing special

I got this book as part of the Lauren Oliver audiobook sale on Audible. I was excited to read a middle grade series by Oliver; the synopsis sounded interesting and I thought this would be something I would love. In the end it was okay but not great. The story is fairly predictable and very boring at times.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was decent. The narrator does a good job with character voices. However, this wasnt one I thought was great on audiobook...actually I was pretty ambivalent about it in general.

This is a pretty classic Clue type of story. Someone is killed in Dumfreys Dime Museum and a group of unusual children try to unravel the mystery of who killed them and why. Initially the increasing number of deaths is blamed on a curse from a shrunken head thats stolen from the museum. However the story ends up much more convoluted than that.

Our group of extraordinary pre-teens follow the clues through a number of mis-directions to unravel this increasingly deadly mystery. The end game though is fairly predictable given the foreshadowing throughout the book.

For some reason I had trouble engaging with the story. All the characters seemed a bit stereotypical. Additionally the story seemed more like a laying out of facts than an interesting story or mystery. I just didnt think it was all that interesting or all that well done.

Overall this was an okay middle grade who done it type of mystery.

A Huge Family Hit...

Both my 4 yo and my 7 yo (and we, their parents) loved this one - Jack Black is perfect, and his performance is so perfectly silly it eliminated any potential scariness. Good Halloween fun!

Light hearted Arthurian spoof featuring rats! :)

Since watching BBC's Merlin series (which we also highly recommend, by the way) last year my kids have become fascinated with Camelot and King Arthur. When I saw this book I knew it would make a great birthday present for my 9 year old who is also a big fan of books involving talking animals. I was right - this book IS fantastic and he loved it. It's not the deepest book out there, but it's a playful/imaginative/funny and clever spoof.

I'm sure that some of the humor and plot plays in it are perhaps lost on him, but he found the book engaging and enjoyable - and so did I when I picked it up and read it. It's a quick read with larger text and fun pen illustrations in it, aimed at the 4th to 6th grade level. I think sometimes the quick reads like this (170 pages, lots of pics on pages) are the best type to boost kids confidence in their reading skills. This book is supposed to be the first in a series and if more come out we will definitely pick them up. Two thumbs up for an entertaining and humorous quick read!

EXCALIBER IS A MOUSE?

I am a serious fan of Sir Arthur and his knights. I absolutely love this clever play on the legend. The good guys/girls are all loveable; the bad guys are really bad. Was not ready for it to end; not to worry, all doors were left open for a sequel - can't wait!

This is a pretty fun book

This is a pretty fun book. In the realms of world building, this book is really strong. The plot though is something fantasy fans have seen a millions times before (ok, so most fantasy heroes don't turn into rats, but a lot of them get stranded in another world), and there are so many references to drive me bonkers. But I think kids who haven't been exposed to this stuff would like it.

Very cute. I bought it because Jimmy Fallon talked about it on his show. This author's first book for middle schoolers is longer, more developed. I believe this is the second published.

ok this book tie the previous and the next book only by the end, so fans of the series might find it a bit boring at first specially after the cliffhanger we left with in the previous book. i'm grateful the author writing is so much less confusing than the previous book, i actually was able to read the whole thing and understand it. and i want to praise the narrator. he does so much better job that the author. i wish she wont narrate her next book. in term of story wise, i feel like it shifted to much darker place than the first book, those fairies are so mean, yes it did have a bit of a darker side all along but considering the age group this book targeted toward to it might be not what they signed up to when they picked up the first book and followed the series. i invested in the series this far, so i will pick up the last book that coming in early 2016.

Very very clever

I'm surprised this book is not a runaway hit like the Harry Potter series. It's smart, The characters are deep and colorful . The setting is fantastic and fertile, the language is entrancing and rich. I can't wait to hear/ read more.
