But the cosy world the two construct is shattered when Ambrose sets off on a trip to Florence. There he falls in love and marries - and there he dies suddenly.
Jealous of his marriage, racked by suspicion at the hints in Ambrose's letters, and grief-stricken by his death, Philip prepares to meet his cousin's widow with hatred in his heart.

AN INCREDIBLE NOVEL -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
In my 20+ years as a story analyst for Hollywood film studios and production companies, I've read my share of stories and we are always looking for that "sense of foreboding," no matter the genre. This is easy to achieve for a scene or two but difficult to sustain. My Cousin Rachel not only opens with a sense of foreboding but Daphne du Maurier has the skill to continue it all the way to the very last word.
I have been a longtime fan of du Maurier's Rebecca; in fact, it's in my Top 10 all-time favorite novels. But, I found My Cousin Rachel to be just a tad more accessible than Rebecca and equally as compelling.
This is the story of Ambrose Ashley and his ward, his young cousin Philip, who are torn apart by the appearance into their lives of a distant cousin named Rachel. When Ambrose, who is not in good health and must spend winters in warmer climates, moves to Italy for the winter and marries Rachel suddenly, Philip is not pleased. In fact, he's jealous and thinks the worst of Ambrose's new bride. But when Ambrose ends up dying while abroad, all kinds of evil thoughts float through Philip's mind, prompted by letters to him from Ambrose. The most important thought is: did Rachel poison Ambrose?
And then Rachel comes to England and meets Philip. At first suspicious, Philip soon finds his cousin Rachel to be sweet and kind and considerate...or, is she?
This gothic-romance is stirring and engaging and a wonderful literary experience. I highly recommend it.
In addition, the narration by Jonathan Pryce adds so much to the literary experience. He captures the smoldering tension floating through Philip's mind and makes the novel easy to listen to and easy to understand. In other words, he's fantastic!
My first DDM novel & won't be my last!
As a huge Graham Greene fan, one of her novels popped up in 'people also purchased' while looking through GG's 'also'. I chose "My Cousin Rachel" based on reviews & commentary about DDM's ability to maintain suspense throughout the novel.
They were right! And such a unique type of suspense - a low level of dread that made me ache for the ending or final surprise reveal (if there was going to be one) from the first 30 minutes.
One of those rare novels that leaves you feeling you're still living the narrator's life long after you're done.
    her best
even more sophisticated than Rebecca. splendidly performed. psychologically brilliant.

    Publisher's Summary:
Regarded as yet another threat to the volatile King Henry VII's claim to the throne, Margaret Pole, cousin to Elizabeth of York (known as the White Princess) and daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, is married off to a steady and kind Lancaster supporter - Sir Richard Pole. For his loyalty, Sir Richard is entrusted with the governorship of Wales, but Margaret's contented daily life is changed forever with the arrival of Arthur, the young Prince of Wales, and his beautiful bride, Katherine of Aragon. Margaret soon becomes a trusted advisor and friend to the honeymooning couple, hiding her own royal connections in service to the Tudors.
After the sudden death of Prince Arthur, Katherine leaves for London a widow, and fulfills her deathbed promise to her husband by marrying his brother, Henry VIII. Margaret's world is turned upside down by the surprising summons to court, where she becomes the chief lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine. But this charmed life of the wealthiest and "holiest" woman in England lasts only until the rise of Anne Boleyn, and the dramatic deterioration of the Tudor court. Margaret has to choose whether her allegiance is to the increasingly tyrannical king, or to her beloved queen; to the religion she loves or the theology which serves the new masters. Caught between the old world and the new, Margaret Pole has to find her own way as she carries the knowledge of an old curse on all the Tudors.

Dignified End of a Very Ambitious Series
Where does The King's Curse rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This books ranks somewhere in the middle of all the audiobooks I have listened to, and that is probably because I have been listening to great books and wonderful audio performances as of late, so the middle is not bad at all. When listening/reading, It is very important to give Philippa Gregory her due as a writer, with an excellent grasp of York/Tudor history, and a wonderful imagination that she expertly uses to weave fiction through established historical facts. Philippa is a very effective writer....so effective that she keeps those of us who already know the end of her stories, reading until the last page. My somewhat tepid reception of this book probably has to do with the fact that I was too eager to get my Tudor fix and was expecting this to be one of the best books of the Cousin's War Series and (in my opinion) it was not.
What other book might you compare The King's Curse to and why?
This book covers most of the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII (in other words, the establishment of the Tudor dynasty). Margaret Pole, the narrator of this story, is the niece of Richard III and the grand daughter of the Earl of Warwick (the King Maker) and thus a scion of the House of York - the house that the Tudors supplanted when Henry VII defeated Richard III in battle. Margaret is also a cousin of the "White Princess" and niece (by marriage) of the "White Queen" (both have their own novels in the series). It is not unfair to compare the book, then, to other books in the series. In my opinion, "The White Queen" was the best, with the "Red Queen" following a close second. The central characters of these books, Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beauford were extremely compelling women and unique for their times, and this probably helped the author when writing the novels.

    Snapshots of characters
Kindle First featured this historical fiction book as an August choice. Since historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, it was a quick choice. About 15% into this book, I was still enthused enough to do some research on Segantini and his paintings. I was also interested in learning more about St. Moritz and that area of Europe around the end of the 19th century. So I read some articles on line, checked out Segantini's art and was in the mind set to really enjoy this book.
The historical fiction novels that I love best are those that make an impact by having a strong story and characters placed into a historical period. Unfortunately, I did not find that in Dorthe Binkert's PORTRAIT OF A GIRL. The author uses narrative text more than dialogue to move the story along and , at times, I thought that the narration had the same tone as the background articles that I read. There are so many characters crowded into a very short period and all seemed to receive equal time and treatment by the author. This had the effect of giving the reader very superficial knowledge of each and , thus, reading about their emotional trevails fails to elicit a strong emotional reaction. In short, it's hard for the reader to care.
My favorite books always leave me with a bit of sadness when I have reached the end. In this case, I was quite content to select the "remove from my Kindle" option.
    Couldn't even finish it
The book is supposed to be set in 1800s but the language the author used was not authentic. The phrase "suck up to people" is an example. One of the characters tells his son to go get him a beer. From the fridge? It was slow moving. Seems like a good premise but it was not very well written.
2 1/2 stars for murky ending
While Nika is the character upon whom the title is based, there are numerous other characters of importance. The story is rather slow starting but I am glad that I stuck with it. Many relationships develop during the story, more than one where Nika is concerned. I liked her as a heroine because she continually wanted to learn, she had the strength and grit to rise above her beginnings, was determined to find out all she could about her mother and family, and became self supporting. So, why only 2 1/2 stars? To explain I must reveal SPOILERS ahead.
For me, the ending was not satisfying.

    Romantic Historical Mystery!
A romantic historical mystery is definately more like it!! Definately a dream holding a nightmare... literally!!!
This nightmare driven love story is great! I was surprised at how quickly the time passed.... it was well written, excellently performed and contained so much mystery, so many twists and turns, so much treachery and such extremes of heart wrenching emotion, that I was thoroughly entertained and wanted nothing more than to be left alone to listen. Can't say better then that I guess.
    CREDIT worthy, YES!!!
    HEAT factor.... 4!
Dream Historical Romance with Stunning Naration
    Any additional comments?
This was a great listen! I was moved by the love story. It was made particularly enjoyable thanks to the impressive narrator . She captured the essence of the characters and mood of the piece extraordinarily well.
Sensational book by Andrea Kane! Beautifully Acted
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! This book has it all: Tantalizing romance (in great detail), mystery, suspense, complex believable characters and an unexpected twist at the end. Ms. Kane is a master of historical romance. This story was impressively acted by Gemma Dawson. I seek out her performances as she is not your average narrator; she passionately acts the story out in a way that truly and uniquely brings it to life. Some prefer a flatter more neutral read- I do not. I think that such compelling and emotionally stirring stories are enhanced by a passionate and realistic performance.
What did you like best about this story?
Everything! I loved the setting, not just the historical back-drop but the mystical element of nature that permeated the story and in a way defined the characters. Kassandra is a wonderful heroine, displaying such maturity and strength for a girl who has suffered though such extreme abuse and isolation. The scenes with her father are heartbreaking, as he attacks her in fits of alcohol induced rage, but Kassie endures and finds her strength and safety in Braden. I love the supporting characters as well, they were wonderfully drawn; the shrill and bitchy Abigail Devon, the ever present support of Charles, the bumbling Percy... they all beautifully contributed to Ms. Kane's intricate tapestry and all were voiced with versatility, flair and conviction by Ms. Dawson.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I don't want to ruin any of the mystery so I shall say the opening scene where Braden is captivated by a young and sassy Kassandra on the beach.

    Awesome Story
I loved this story I have been waiting for Xaiver's story he has always been such a bad boy and for good reasons I really wanted to see his HEA and what a great one it was. After his cruel mother Nerissa sets him up with Lord Bute's daughter many years before it is time that Xavier finds Lizzie again but she is so different now a lot has happened and Lizzie is determined to get Xavier's trust and love this starts a journey that is sensual and filled with danger but Lizzie is strong and brings out the best in Xavier and with the other Westruthers to help this one will have you smiling and turning the pages to get to the end although I didn't want it to end. I highly recommend this one and the series as MS Brooke takes us on a heartwarming sensual and magical journey into the Regency era.
    What a great story....
Oh My...what a good read. Don't let the title fool you,,,he got his reputation by being so mistreated by the Mother who never loved him and a father who cared less..The women who loved him; loved him believed in him and gave him babies they could love. Sweet story, recommend to all happy endings .
    Fairly good read
Good lots of drama. My only problem was I didn't buy him falling for her. He's worldly and she has lead a sheltered life. After one encounter with her husband she runs away and lives in a small village with a preacher and his wife. Her husband knows where she fled to all these many years and doesn't give her a second thought until he needs an heir. Then we are suppose to believe he has love for her? He tells her, give me my heir and a spare and you can retire back to the country. Guess this must turn her to mush because she decides quite quickly thereafter that she will win his love? The whole issue with his mother kept me interested in this one. It was nice reading about characters from past books and getting updates on them. But their feelings for each other didn't ring true for me.
    Meh...
I pre-ordered this one and couldn't wait for it but it was just okay. I like when books give me butterflies, this one didn't do it much for me... The love scenes were great but the feelings/sparks were missing. I also felt like there was a bunch of random ramblings about stuff that could have been taken out.

Tessa Dare Writes a Dang Good Story!
I love everything about this book. The story line is fabulous, the characters are fresh and very appealing. I listened to the whole thing in one sitting and I could turn around and listen to it again.
Eva Kaminsky's narration is terrific. I especially love her accent for Pauline, our heroine. Pauline is a country lass, who though lacking much formal education, is witty and quick and catches the hero's attention from first glance. Griff, the Duke of Halford has been forced by his mother, a woman who is desperate for grandchildren to pick a woman to be his Duchess. His mother vows to be able to turn any one of the ladies of Spindle Cove into a woman that the Ton will accept as Duchess material. Griff offers Pauline a good sum of money to take his mother up on her offer and to fail spectacularly. Pauline doesn't see this as a problem.
I love Tessa Dare more and more with every book of hers I read.
It's worth a credit. It's worth the money. And most importantly, it's worth the time it took to listen to it.
    I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
    Wonderful!
    Genre: Regency Romance
Performance by Eva Kaminsky was above average, except for a couple of mispronunciations which weren't bad enough to spoil everything for me.
    This book has everything:
    A plucky heroine
    A reluctant hero
    A determined Duchess
    And really bad knitting
Tessa Dare takes us back to Spindle Cove, the haven for bluestockings, spinsters, and awkward young ladies needing some polish. Most of the book takes place in London, but it begins and ends in Spindle Cove.
The hero and heroine are great characters, and they grow and change over the course of the novel. Pauline takes on a little bit of shine, and Griffin finds a bit of humility.
Although this is part of a series, it isn't imperative that you read the others first.
    Definitely worth the credit.
    Fun twist of Cinderella's Story
The storyline is so amusing and kept my interest till the end. It's about irresponsible, living in debauchery Duke who wants to spite his overbearing mother by marrying a serving girl.

Witty dialogue highlights battle between the sexes
Alex Kingston (River Song from the 11th Doctor Who series) would make a great Jessica Trent, the heroine of this story. The banter between Jessica and Sebastian, Lord Dain, (large, dark, wealthy) kept me laughing throughout the night as I couldn't stop listening. This book is well served by this audio performance. Kate Reading nails Jessica. The side characters are also interesting, e.g., Genevieve, Jessica's femme fatale grandmother, and Bertie, Jessica's brother. Lord Dain is paranoid about women only wanting him for his money and has a very jaundiced opinion of all females.
If you want an intelligent plot and laugh-out-loud dialogue, give this one a try. It's one of my top five romances.
AWESOME..I'm in love with this story; I want more
The only bad thing I can say about this story is I wish it were part of a series. The relationship between Jessica and Dain was so compelling because it makes sense. Nice job on character development. I love that the called each other pet names like " you little Nit-Wit" and "Clod-pole". I wish there was more.... Excellent work
    1 SINNER + 1 SAINT = A RIVETING NON-STOP LISTEN
Lord Dain was an ugly baby, his Mother ran off when he was little, his Father hated him and all his classmates mocked him so what was he to do? He hardened his heart and, as he grew up, became cold, arrogant, selfish and only paid for sex (and lots of it) because his low self worth made him believe no-one would do it willingly unless they were after his fortune. Then he met beautiful, clever and witty Jessica and his unemotional life was about to change forever.
Jessica had journeyed to Paris determined to keep her younger Brother away from a group of degenerates led by the Lord of Scoundrels himself - Dain but it only took one long appreciative top to toe look at him to bring forth the stirrings of passion. Once introduced, they immediately started up witty banter, quick responses and intelligent conversation however, their mutual sizzling attraction and lust was hidden beneath it. There were many chance, annoying or forced meetings, where sparks flew between them, and it was at one such meeting, that their mutual longing was ignited and passion and hope blossomed. But someone's betrayal quickly quashed their feelings replacing them with wounding words, hurt, anger, doubts, misunderstandings and matters suddenly took a potentially disastrous route.....

This could have been a good book
The narrator was very good, and a lot of the story was good. The dialogue was very well written, the story line was a good one even though it was a little drawn out, but the "hero" of the story was super annoying. Basically he whined throughout the whole book about his disability - he seemed to have a pity party in just about every chapter. I fast forwarded toward the end just to get through with the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
The final audiobook in Amanda Scott's Dangerous series introduces one of her most unforgettable heroines - a woman determined to live on her own terms.
Accompanied by her chaperone, her dresser, and her adored pet monkey, Lady Letitia Deverill comes to London to serve as maid of honor to the young Queen Victoria. An impassioned Tory in a sea of Whigs, Letty has no intention of changing her political views.
The headstrong noblewoman soon discovers she has enemies at court, and none more formidable than the powerful - and irresistible - Viscount Justin Raventhorpe. Justin, a staunch Whig, is enchanted by this outspoken woman.
Brought together by a mysterious shared inheritance, Justin and Letty give in to their mutual desire. As scandal threatens their passionate union, a deadly conspiracy against the throne thrusts Letty into mortal peril, and Justin realizes how far he'll go for a love that has become his most dangerous obsession.

    Disappointed
I found the characters uninteresting and the story to much like a school lesson. This book was not even close to book #3 . It seems this series alternated between first a good book then a bad book, then a good and bad again. I was definitely disappointed.
    Great story
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I find that the narrator makes the listening difficult . A good storyteller, but the exaggerated 'upper class' English accent used is grating and stilted.
If it could be a little less forced it would be easier on the ear.
I have found this with the other Dangerous series books too.......but I love the Author so I keep struggling
Was Dangerous Lady worth the listening time?
Excellent story as usual from Amanda Scott
