Overflowing with all of the majesty and intrigue of medieval glory days, this magnificent New York Times best seller is a captivating story of passion and loyalty, justice and honor. Beloved storyteller Julie Garwood steps back to the silver-shrouded Highlands of her classic tale The Secret - and hails the return of two unforgettable warriors: Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan.
In the dark days after the death of Richard the Lionhearted, lives and lands would fall into upheaval at the hands of a power-hungry British ruler and his violent minions. One victim of the scourge is innocent Gillian, who is a mere child when the cruel and ambitious Baron Alford slaughters her father and tears her family apart. Alford, determined to recover a jeweled box for the despotic King John, is furious when the precious treasure slips through his fingers - only to be lost for more than a decade.
Now a beautiful young woman, Gillian finds the key to resolving her past in handsome Scottish chieftains Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan. With the cunning and courage of the daring Scotsmen, and with the friendship of a new ally, Bridgid KirkConnell, Gillian at last fights the unscrupulous Baron Alford, laying claim to her home, her family, and her father's reputation. But in the presence of the mighty warriors, Gillian and Bridgid discover that desire can be a weapon of conquest...betrayal can slay trust in a heartbeat...and the greatest risk of all is surrender - to the deep emotions of unexpected love.

    Love the Highlands' Lairds
This book was romantic, funny, adventurous, and unpredictable. It was a joy to listen to. I liked the first book "The Secret" but thought this second book was even better.
Gillian and Brodrick are definitely two opposites that attract. They are two strong willed people that have some very funny conversations. I absolutely loved one of the conversations after the marriage. I don't want to give anything away but after they marry and she gets mad and says "I was married on a horse" I couldn't breathe - I was laughing too hard!
The narrator did an excellent job. As with the first book there are some people who didn't like the narration but I thought it was great. She did each character with a different voice and that's not easy. Some people complained she whispered a lot. As far as I heard she only whispered when the book said "he/she whispered"
I'm glad I listened to this one.....I loved it!!
    The ultimate page turner
    Any additional comments?
Skillfully paced, multifaceted characters, gripping adventure, breathtaking setting, and stunning romance. Susan Duerden does a fantastic job narrating. As a British woman, she seems to have an innate knack for imitating the Scottish brogue.
I continually noticed Garwoods skill in pacing. Never was there a dull moment. When one exciting thing ended, another was starting. After the 2.5 hour mark, I was having trouble pausing the audiobook - I was totally hooked. The descriptive writing made me feel like I was dropped into medieval Scotland, and the day after I finished the audiobook, I found myself wishing I could go back.
The characters were another strong point for me. The two leads, Ive decided, are one of my favorite romance couples of all time. Gillian was a brave young woman with strong convictions.

I loved everything about this book!
This book kept me captivated from beginning to end. The story wasn't your typical historical romance and I liked that......it kept it interesting. I recommend this book not only to anyone who enjoys romances but also people who like Native American stories.
I heard this narrator before and I really enjoy her reading. Many people complain when she whispers and I don't understand the complaint. She only whispers when the book says "she/he whispered". How can you fault the narrator for whispering when the author wrote that in the book?
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its worth a credit (or better yet if you find it on sale like I did snatch it up quick!)
    Yes another 5 star rating!
The first book in theCrown's Spiesseries.Susan Duerdendoes a wonderful job of narrating this one. What I liked most was the unique plot. The prologue nicely set the stage for this, as well as for Christina's character, and Jessica's journal developed this plot nicely without interfering with Lyon and Christina's romance, which was rather whirlwind and angry, but tender and joyful as well. Christina being raised by Natives and then returning to England to honour her mother's request. Christina is one amazing character, and she never leaves one feel bored. Christina made me laugh. She's proud and strong willed and Lyon loves that about her. I love it when she divorces Lyon for shaming her. I love his reaction too. But most of all I love how she has everyone so damn confused, but so convinced of her sincerity that they'll do anything she asks, no matter how ridiculous it is from their point of view. And Lyon there is no words to describe him, he is gorgeous and very very stubborn but he is definitely not the only one. The witty dialog between the couple constantly made me laugh and smile. In fact, this book caused me to laugh a lot. If you are looking for an amazing love story with lots of funny moments than I highly recommend this audiobook.
    Shaking my head...

As a real life Dakota woman, the use of my cultural background is disturbing. It might've been nice had JG did some research instead of casually flinging stereotypes on the page. Seriously, I wouldn't have minded if she had at least tried to show some effort toward authenticity. I bought this book long ago and couldn't remember hearing it. Now I know why I didn't finish it. I've read other Julie Garwood books and they were good. This one just made me a bit angry.
Also, Susan Duerden's narration is truly cringe inducing. Her attempt at accents and the weird intonation she uses really irritated me. With other books she's read, I've listened at 1.25x and it was ok.

    Lady Philippa Marbury is...odd.
The brilliant, bespectacled daughter of a double marquess cares more for books than balls, for science than the season, and for laboratories than love. But before that, Pippa has two weeks to experience all the rest - 14 days to research the exciting parts of life. It's not much time, and to do it right she needs a guide familiar with London's darker corners.
    She needs...a Scoundrel.

But reputations often hide the darkest secrets, and when the unconventional Pippa boldly propositions him, seeking science without emotion, she threatens all he works to protect. He is tempted to give Pippa precisely what she wants...but the scoundrel is more than he seems, and it will take every ounce of his willpower to resist giving the lady more than she ever imagined.

Pippa's thirst for knowledge leads her to Love
This book was way better than book 1. It definitely rescued this series for me.
Lady Philippa "Pippa" Marbury is the fourth daughter of the Marguess of Needham and Dolby. She doesn't believe in luck and she believes in scientific explanations for everything. Logic and Truth always wins out in Pippa's world.
She is engaged to the Lord Castleton but decided she wanted to do research on what is necessary to be a proper wife. Pippa deals with her nerves by gathering knowledge so she can feel prepared. She decides to go to the most notorious gaming hall in London, The Fallen Angel, because the owner Jasper Cross is notorious rake.
Pippa asks him to help her with her research on how to please her fiancee as a wife, and thus opening up a pandora's box with Cross.
Cross wasn't nobility but he seemed to be the only one in London who didn't find Pippa to be a nerd, geek or odd. He actually enjoyed engaging her in discussion but he couldn't offer her a life like she could have with Lord Castleton.
What I loved about this one was Pippa's honesty, her strength, her resolve and her curiosity about everything. She made being smart look fun, not odd. I chuckled at her a number of times. She said things people were afraid to say, she was a really good heroine.
Jasper finally met his match and she kept him honest. I liked this story much more than the Pippa's sister in book 1. I look forward to book 3.
    A slow burn
I really liked this story, even more than the fist book. It was a slow burn between Cross and Pippa and at times Inthought they would not end up together but their story was beautifully romantic and many times sexy without actual sex. The narrator as always does an amazing job with accents and the different male and female voices. She's the best at historical romances.
    DISAPPOINTED
Would you try another book from Sarah MacLean and/or Rosalyn Landor?
Yes, I am looking forward to the next book in this series and Rosalyn Landor is my favorite narrator.
If youve listened to books by Sarah MacLean before, how does this one compare?
This book was just not as good as the first book in the series. I think Ms.

New York Times best-selling author Julie Garwood captures the Highland splendor of medieval Scotland in this breathtaking love story. The inspiration for her acclaimed bestseller Ransom, this classic tale is a passionate masterpiece from one of the best-loved storytellers of all time.
Judith Hampton was as beautiful as she was proud and loyal. Her dear Scottish friend from childhood was about to give birth, and Judith had promised to be at her side. But there was another reason for the journey from her bleak English home to the Highlands: to meet the father she had never known, the Laird Maclean. Nothing prepared her, however, for the sight of the Scottish barbarian who was to escort her into his land...Iain Maitland, laird of his clan, a man more powerfully compelling than any she had ever encountered.
In a spirited clash of wills and customs, Judith reveled in the melting bliss of Iain's searching kisses, his passionate caresses. Perplexed by her sprightly defiance, bemused by her tender nature, Iain felt his soul growing into the light and warmth of her love. Surely nothing would wrench her from the affection and trust of Iain and his clan...not even the truth about her father, a devastating secret that could shatter the boldest alliance, and the most glorious of loves!

    Nice Historical Highland Romance
I found this book to be well written that kept my interest. I enjoyed the friendships, struggles, and romance throughout the book. I don't understand why many people disliked the narrator but I thought she was good.....not great but good. She whispered when the words said "she whispered" so what was the problem. Anyway I will definately listen to the next book in the series.
MEDIEVAL HIGHLAND ROMANCE AT IT'S BEST
Oh boy, I'm so easily pleased - just give me a hunky handsome Highland Warrior in a kilt (a must), add some interesting amusing and likeable characters (also necessary) who are all involved in a charming passionate and funny story (preferable), throw in lots of romance and a little sex (an added bonus) then have it written by the gifted and talented Ms Garwood (wow) finally have it brought to life by the many voices of Susan Duerden and then folks...... I'm one happy lass.
Audible - I'm afraid you will be getting an email from me soon begging you (on bended knees if necessary) to carry on with this series and add books 2 Ransom and 3 Shadow Music to your Library very very soon so I can add them to mine.
Worth a credit? Well folks if you're like me and enjoy being mentally transported back in time then that would be a definitely, positively and absolutely YES.
    Whats not to like?
Its got everything we love in a romance. A strong woman, a rough tough man who agains his will falls in love. Julie Garwood has long since been one of my favorite historical romance authors. I read this book years ago and was hesitant about listening to it on Audible, but I took the chance and am so glad I did.
    Absolutely A Refreshing Change!
It is so refreshing to find a historical romance that is not just a bunch of sex scenes strung together around a weak story.

    So disappointed
I am speechless. I have always enjoyed Janet's books, even the somewhat bizarre "Wicked" series. But this one seems to be so contrived. The plot is unoriginal, the narration is poor, Lorelei King even makes a mistake, says "what--oh" and then reads it right. I have never heard that in an audio book before. I just didn't like anything about this book. But in order to be fair, I listened to the whole thing. It took me two tries to get it done.
Such a good book to take me away from reality.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Husband List to be better than the print version?
I love Lorelei King. She has a way that brings the characters to life for me. I cant imagine reading any other way. Thank you Lorelei!!!
Have you listened to any of Lorelei Kings other performances before? How does this one compare?
    All of hers. Very steady.
    Another Book for Evanovich's List
Any Janet Evanovich fan will read this. While Evanovich's romances are rarely as excellent as Stephanie's adventures, we fans will read it and enjoy it. I must admit I was surprised that it was a historical romance. The narrator was super as usual.
    Fast paced fun read
If you could sum up The Husband List in three words, what would they be?
    Fast, fun, sweet
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Husband List?
    The history of each connection.
What about Lorelei Kings performance did you like?
Her male voices were not distracting like some
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Lots of lol
    Any additional comments?
Good book, multiple story lines, couldn't wait to listen
    Delightful characters. Historical romance
What did you love best about The Husband List?
Loved the departure from the authors typical contemporary writing.

    Members Reviews:
    Great Story, terrible narration
This is one of the best stories in this series so far but the narration is awful. Stephens pauses at the wrong time in a sentence and puts emphasis in the wrong places. She also has long dramatic pauses and swallows a lot. She was better about not making everyone sound like crusty ole cowboys but honestly, if I hadn't already bought the series I would not buy anymore narrated by Stephens.
    Texas Blue
The fifth book in the Whispering Mountain series, is the first book with the second generation. Duncan "Duck" McMurray is now a Texas Ranger and has decided to send three men to Whispering Mountain Ranch, three "gentlemen" picked to call on Duncan's cousins. When his friend Lewton Paterson, wanting a chance to married into a good family decides to take the place of one of the gentlemen callers. While Duncan goes to the Texas-Mexico border to fight cattle rustlers, not wanting to go with the men to Whispering Mountain to face his cousins.
Lewton soon finds out that the three women are just what he is looking for, but they are not liking for anyone like him. So he ends up spending his time working the ranch, the hardest work he has ever done; but he likes the work. In the end Lewton and a ranch-hand Em have to go to the border to try to save Duncan's life.
This is a great story that Jodi Thomas had written, it lives up to the rest of the stories in this series. Linda Stephens does a good job with the narration.
Won't listen to this narrator again.
What did you like best about Texas Blue? What did you like least?
I enjoyed the continuation of the Whispering Mountain series. It would have been nice to include more of the characters from previous books. I found that narration extremely lacking and dramatic pauses way passed annoying. I won't listen to this narrator again. I'm disappointed that the same narrator did most of Jodi Thomas' books.
How could the performance have been better?
Speed up the narration and cut the dramatic pauses completely. It was often dead slow and difficult to listen to.

    Narrator Ruined a Good story
I got almost half way through listening and finally decided to stop listening and just buy the book and finish it on my Nook. The story really was a good story, but the narrator was just not very good at all.
    Storg American marries an Earl
Every title I finish in this series leaves me thinking it is better than the last. This was a heartwarming story. The characters are flawed, but redeemable. I enjoyed the strong Georgina (Gina) and how she rose to every occasion. The characters are very relatable. I was outraged that the dummy Earl didnt even mention that he had two children until they arrived at his home! What a &%^*! However, Gina handles that too and teaches the Earl not only to love, but how to be a father and husband. Great story!
The other reviewers mention the narrator, but I thought it was fine. I believe a good narrator is one that makes you forget the story is being read and all you see is the story. This is certainly the case with this audible book.
The story is mediocre, the narrator is FANTASTIC!
I probably would not have finished this book had it not been for the wonderful narration. I downloaded this book and another in the series and literally could not finish the other because it was too hoaky. Now, when someone say's a romance novel is hoaky, that is BAD!
This is my first book narrated by Vanessa Hart. She has a voice very similar to one of my all time favorite narrators, Barbara Rosenblat, only more haunting. I don't remember what the story was about, but I do still hear her voice in my ears.
    Good Story but narrated poorly!
What did you love best about To Marry an Heiress?
The plot and the overall story was very good. Enjoyed hearing how they come to love each other.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Didn't really have a favorite character.
What aspect of Vanessa Harts performance would you have changed?
I would change how she reads! What I mean is, she READ's well, but seems to make a statement sound like a question, or a question sound like a statement. Seems to add comma's where there should be none, than she sounds flat and uncaring when she should be very excited! Really made it hard to listen to the whole story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I like how our hero comes to understand that he is in love with his new wife.

    Publisher's Summary:
Life is not easy for the poor relations of Englands upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and Londons newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born.
The establishment is an immediate hit with Londons most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester, Lady Fortescues nephew. Rowcester believes that his aunts entry into the trade will denigrate their family name and is determined to shut the hotel down - until he meets Miss Harriett James, the lovely young woman who accepts Lady Fortescues offer to become The Poor Relations chef after the death of her parents and the loss of her fortune. Rowcester moves into The Poor Relation for the season - ostensibly to keep an eye on his aunts business.

Charming Regency Fun - Romance & Adventure
Set in Regency London it has the trials and tribulations of a group of high and upper class impoverished aristocrats who band together to open a hotel. Some of the characters are oddly appealing, some (Sir Philip) is oddly appalling. There is a romance, but a great deal of time is spent on the other characters, such as the marvellous septuagenarian Lady Fortescue.
On the surface frothy fun, but serious issues often simmer to the top, such as the fate of unmarried impoverished women, or the scenes at Newgate.
This is a Marion Chesney Story (I had to google to see who this MC Beaton was). Good clean fun. If you like Georgette Heyer you will enjoy this book which again shows close attention to historical detail (without it intruding in the flow of the novel)
    sweet but overpriced trifle
The first four volumes of this light and humorous series were perfect for some fatigued time listening, but Beaton/Chesney could have knitted together one excellent novel from the first three instalments ??? one that could have equalled a Heyer classic. I do like intelligent braincandy, but I prefer my fluff thicker!
This series is similar in style to the author's Lady Rose mysteries, even though Poor Relation is more Heyerite romance; the series may not appeal to fans of Beaton's Hamish McBeth or Agatha Raisin mysteries. I thought Poor Relation much richer than the Daughters of Mannerling series, which they also resemble with a continuing storyline.
I think the best in series (of the first four now on Audible) is v 1; you can listen to any independent of the others, however, should you catch a sale because there is enough backstory in each to get the history of the hotel and its proprietors.
Porter is as usual excellent, and do I detect an extra bit of love in her voice for this series and Lady Rose's exploits?
    Not Five Stars, but Fun
If you're looking for a sanitized, glittering romance with billows of lace and languishing glances, this is probably not your cup of oolong. Written under the pseudonym Marian Chesney, this is M.C. Beaton's first Regency novel. But a Regency novel with a distinct difference! Yes, there is the deserving but impoverished young lady and the rich, supercilious lord to carry the love interest, but Georgette Heyer this is not.

I bought this book primarily because of the narrator...Rosalyn Landor. What surprised me was the author,i found this a light read. Easy to follow. It was funny at times and the characters were great. I can't wait for the next book on Cross. I hope Landor will pick up from where she left of!
    Predictable with a Twist
If you could sum up A Rogue by Any Other Name in three words, what would they be?
This is a really good book. I love this author and this narrator. The Rogue is redeemed and the lady gets her dream husband. It's predictable but the twist is worth the read/listen.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Rogue by Any Other Name?
The most memorable moment is when Penelope and Michael meet in the dark the first time after nine years but there were several other moments that are just as enjoyable. Though I can't recall each moment. I know this was a sweet and romantic story that made me laugh.
What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Landor is an excellent narrator. You always feel like you are there.
    My first by this author
And I loved it. I love Audible sales because I can listen to authors I have not experienced before. This was a delightful book by one of my favorite narrators!
Very good start to the series :)
    4 stars
This was a very good story. I liked Penelope very much and Bourne wasn't too bad either. I thought they made a good couple and I couldn't help rooting for them to get together. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I may try more of her work in the future.
Penelope is the oldest daughter of 5 and becoming a spinster at the ripe old age of 28. She had been engaged to a Duke but he loved someone else and their engagement was broken in a scandal that caused Penelope to have trouble finding another suitable husband. She has had a few other offers but has been wanting more than the normal arranged marriage. Unfortunately she hasn't found more and now finds herself with none.
Bourne is a Marquess who lost his parents at a young age. His guardian then convinced Bourne (as soon as he came of age and inherited everything) to wager everything he could that wasn't tied to his title on a game of cards...the winner of course was the guardian and Bourne was left with next to nothing. Bourne swore revenge and to get back everything that was stolen from him.

    Amazing story.
What an amazing story. Because I really enjoyed The Winter Sea I couldn't wait to listen to The Rose Garden and I wasn't disappointed. The story moves back and forth through time and as with The Winter Sea this proves to keep the listener intrigued and wanting more. I guess my only negative comment was that at times the narrator needed to take great gulps of air - but this was only a very minor issue. I highly recommend this book.
    Beautiful Oldfashioned Romance
This story intertwines past and present so beautifully. The story of Eva and Daniel is so wonderfully described it was so hard to put it down. I felt drawn into the story from beginning to end. It was refreshing to listen to a book that was more romantic than sexual. It lets you draw your own conclusions in the bedroom.
My only complaint was that I didn't want it to end. I would recommend this book.
    The narrator was great too.
Lovely way to spent some hours
I love Gabaldon's Outlander series, but I must say that I love Kearsley's universe as well. There were some moments towards the end of this book where the hairs on my arms stood up. It might be overly romantic but it worked for me. This is not great world literature but a truly wonderful book to listen to. Well worth the time.
Listen to this story... you won't be disappointed
Why in the world would someone expect another really good writer in their own style to set out to produce a story "JUST LIKE" Outlander. Just because it involves traveling back in time doesn't mean it has to be compared. Why not just enjoy it for what it is. A good story, well worth the listen.
I will say as a matter of small complaint, that the narrator was a little "meek" for what I thought Eva might really be like but just the fact that I was thinking about that, means that the author did her part in building the character/s for me. I feel like I know Trelowarth.
I do wish the story had been longer and I suppose that too is a compliment to the writer. I think there is room for another story and do hope that Ms. Kearsley will have a care for those of us that truly loved the story and tell us more.
One of the best reads of the year
The story and the performance was soo good! I loved the events from a woman's view. I told my wife that if she like "The 6th Sense" and "A Beautiful Mind" then she would love this book as nothing is as it seems right from the very beginning.
