Excellent tale of adventure!

Lovely novel of a girl who sets out to discover a cure for her condition in a fantasy world of beasts and magical creatures. Similar in some ways to Wizard of Oz or Lord of the Rings, I found this to be a sufficiently new approach to the 'journey of discovery' tale to be very entertaining. I anxiously await the sequel.

Action packed and well written

Emery has grown up in the foster system thinking that she has no family and no loved ones to care for her. One day, her life changes when she fights back against some bullies in an alley. She discovers that she has powers, and she also finds out that she has a brother: Elijah. He takes her to a safe house where there are others like her and starts to answer some of her questions about who she is and what she can do (although, he cannot answer her questions fast enough to satisfy her intense curiosity for what is happening to her). She meets a gorgeous man named Kade, who has strange shifting eyes and learns that she has a powerful and unique connection to him. As she learns more about herself and this world of magic and light and dark houses, her powers grow and she is continually thrust into a fight for her life.

I enjoyed this book so much because it is full of constant twists and turns. The way the book is structured is brilliant because it givesÂyou almost a feelingÂlike you can't catch your breath - which is exactly how the main character is feeling throughout the book. She is confused and disoriented at first, and she constantly asks questions.ÂThis parallels what the reader experiences. More things are revealed little by little, shocking things happen, and the story becomes more and more interesting and immersive. This is one of the most actionÂpacked books I have read this year.

I loved the character development in this book.ÂEach characterÂwas realistically written and had lots of greatÂcharacter traits as well as flaws that made the book enjoyable. In particular, her evolving relationship with Kade was really frustrating (in a good way).

My only complaint was that it was so action packed that it was hard to pinpoint the actual rise and fall of a true plot. It really worked for this book, however. I amÂtruly looking forward to the next installment.

Another great installment of what I am now calling the Merlin addiction. My name is Nicole and I have a Merlin addiction. I love these funny adaptations so much because the narrator is so passionate I cant help but get sucked in. If youre looking for a quick lift to your day, something to put a smile on your face in a short amount of time, you need to start this series.

Super short but my gawd so very entertaining

OK, if you havent liked the previously ones you wont enjoy this one either.

As for me I freaking love them, I find them so very entertaining. Sure some parts can be a little crass but I think thats why I enjoy them so much..LOL

I received episodes 1-3 in exchange for fair reviews. The author told me additional episodes are in the works. I really wanted these to be a retelling for adults rather than a adult humor with a thin veneer of being based on this material. It is really not, but it's a set of comparisons used for comedic effect.

A beautiful little tale

Sophia Loren Chambers is a saxophonist but not of the typical variety. The Blue Lagoon is packed tonight with people there to see her unusual and uplifting performance. Franco, the MC, and Lewis, an aspiring comedian, both know that Sophia is on her way to greatness. Its a great set up for either something magical and little wonderful or something a little spooky to happen. I really didnt know which way this story would go. If youre looking for a short tale with a touch of the paranormal to it, this is a great pick.

Sophia enjoys being on stage and sharing her small gifts with others but shes also very down to Earth. Shes not pretentious but nor is she star-struck naive. Theres definite mystery about her and her saxophone. I was caught up in this aspect of the story.

Im not a musically talented person myself so Im sure I missed out a little here but not much because Sophia chooses to play a piece that takes talent yet one that is familiar to most Americans. Even though I have no idea how difficult it is to perform this piece, I could still hear it in my head as the story carried on, which I really liked. That was perfect backdrop for the rest of the story.

By the end of the tale, I had no doubt that Sophias star was on the rise. This is a beautiful little story that ends on a high note.

The Narration: Raquel Beattie was the perfect fit for this story. She sounds like a woman who is sure in her talent. Beattie also had a great male voice for Franco. Beattie captured the nuanced emotions of this short tale the hushed expectation of the crowd, the uplifted spirits, Sophias own bitter sweet memories of the origins to her saxophone. Great narration all around!

Its Short and Sweet!!

It seems at first that Sophia could be an actress, or the ancient terminology if actress which is akin to being a prostitute. She seems to be a very popular entertainer, and by the tone of voice used in the audiobook version, there is no doubt about that. Since its a known thing in her world that people will buy tickets months in advance to see her perform.

But that guess came from the first few minutes, since it sounded like she was known for her beauty; which she was of course, but not in that way, she has a natural beauty to her. But not just that she also had a natural talent in playing one of the jazziest instruments known to mankind, the saxophone, which if I heard correctly her father gave to her as a gift. And the sound that cane out if her instrument was nothing short of baring her soul to her audience.

I have to say I love the reference from her middle name Loren, which was inspired by Sophia Loren, who was, and is still being called one if the most beautiful women ever in this world next to Elizabeth Taylor, and Raquel Walsh. My other favorite reference from this book/audiobook is the name of the tavern, The Blue Lagoon.

Fun Fantasy Read for Tweens, Teens, and Adults

I got this book in the mail on Monday morning and by Monday evening I had finished it. And now, on Wednesday, my 12 year old is halfway through. It is engaging enough for an adult, but simple enough for a tween. I love the way this book jumps from past to present tense and I love how it ties into the first book but can also be read as a stand-alone story. I so much appreciate that it is free of bad language and other adult content and can be shared with my kiddos.

"Luke Coles and the Forest Assassin" is a delightful combination of fantasy, science fiction, romance, adventure, and mythology. It reads as a collection of inter-woven short stories spanning several centuries and a half-dozen countries, all without losing historical integrity. Its pages are filled with adventures as experienced by the crew of the legendary ghost ship Caleuche and shared from the perspective of is newest member, a magic mimic who exists to save earth and humanity from the evils that would seek to destroy them.

In spite of a few typographical errors, this book has earned a place on my shelf among my favorites. It is definitely worth the read.

Couldn't put the book down!

Josh Walker has outdone himself in this next book in the Luke Coles book series. The story hooks you right from the start, and once again you are thrown into the beautiful setting and rich culture of Chiloe Island, where Luke returns during modern times, as he embarks on a new adventure! I was pleasantly surprised by a wonderful plot twist at the start of the book (not going to spoil it for you all!) This book is a great read, and I was unable to put it down! Now I'm anxiously waiting for the next one!

Great second volume of the series. Amazing terror book.

"Luke Coles and the Forest Assassin" by Josh Walker is the second book of the series "Luke Coles".

The first book ("Luke Coles and the Flower of Chiloé") was an amazing book, an introduction to the characters full of action and paranormal creatures. The second book even exceeds it.

The plot already starts with a race and a discovery. Flashbacks and different narrators place the reader slowly into every scene. We find out a bit more about the past of the characters. Walker answers some unresponded questions and makes you remember little details of the first book.

We face new creatures, learn more tradition and mythology and fall more in love with the characters.

A rich hybrid blend of sci-fi and fantasy packed with great characterization and world-building

Evan Marshall Hernandezâs Breaking the Skies is an ambitious piece of work, especially for a more independent author. In broad terms, itâs a science-fiction war novel, opening its action with the final stand of a revolution set to end the reigning Queen on this planet. Hernandezâs heroes are largely on the side of the Queen for this novel, and yet Hernandez doesnât necessarily make either side noticeably better or worse than the others. Indeed, many of the bookâs pleasures come from the way it navigates moral complexity so well, establishing its heroes and villains clearly while letting everyone by fully realized, complex creations. More than that, Hernandez handles his action well, leaning both into the chaos of the war but also the morality of such violence, grappling with questions about who we ally ourselves with, the tactics we use in war, and humanityâs relationship with this alien planet.

But itâs that planet that makes for the most interesting material in the novel, which leans more heavily into the fantasy genre and brings out the best elements of the novel. Not content with just having complex human characters, Hernandez fills his planet with several animalistic races, each of which has its own personality, culture, and approach to the world. Even more interestingly, Hernandez offers his own variation on Philip Pullmanâs daemons, pairing many of our heroes with creatures that are their partners and friends, which often tells you much about the people themselves. And Hernandez spends just as much time on these creatures as he does his human characters, investing them with backstories, culture, personality, and every bit as much richness as the others.

The end result is a rich, well-realized novel, one with enough complexity to the story to keep readers satisfied while never neglecting the world-building and detail that makes a fantasy world come to life. Breaking the Skies definitely feels like the first entry in a series, with sections that feel a bit drawn out at times, and some pacing that could use just a little more momentum at certain points. The sheer number of characters can be a little overwhelming at times, even while Hernandez makes them all work, and it ultimately feels like the book could be a bit shorter and lose little of its strengths. And yet, itâs a solid book that I donât hesitate to recommend; its sheer imagination and solid storytelling, its great character work, and the fascinating world all work together wonderfully.

Awesome story and amazing characters!

I really enjoyed this book. I liked every main character and loved the perspectives of each one. I highly recommend this book as I enjoyed it more than any book I have read in a long while. I hope you enjoy as much as I did. I am really looking forward to the next book.

A Debut Author With A Lot of Potential

I have to be honest, I'm a little conflicted about how to rate this book. There is a nearly even divide of good & bad here with the good coming out a nose ahead of the bad.

Here we go with a "Pros & Cons" review, as that seems to be my go-to with 3 star books.

The writing takes on a beautiful, French-influenced style, but is oddly constructed & tiresome to read.

Soul of the World is written in a way that causes my inner narrator to stumble all over the page. She tends to do that a little bit anyway, but in particular I found myself going back to reread sentences way more than I am comfortable with.

A couple peculiar, recurring word choices combined with an occasionally odd sentence structure had me feeling a little like I was reading a translation. The author's profile says that he speaks French, which may explain where some of the unfamiliar phrasing & language structure come from.

Now, this may not be a problem for everyone who reads this book, but it was for me.

That being said, I really enjoyed the French influence where naming conventions are concerned.

Tales of Luna and Earth (some spoilers)

The Lunar Chronicles are a series with lots of complexity and history -- whether the characters are from Earth or Luna, they have a lot going on in their lives. So it only seems natural that Marissa Meyer expanded her science-fiction fairy-tale series with "Stars Above," a collection of her short stories that fill in all the gaps of the characters' pasts -- and though readers of her series will know where each story goes, every one is a gripping little tale that fleshes out the wider story.

Each of the stories focuses on a character -- some major, some supporting -- in the Lunar Chronicles universe, but several years before the events of the main series. They're in roughly chronological order, beginning with "The Keeper," and Michelle's struggle to care for and hide the Lunar princess in the basement of her farmhouse. Then there is "Glitches," where a small cyborg child is brought to live with her new stepfamily, only to be stranded with a cruel, bitter stepmother and bratty stepsister.

And then there are stories for other characters -- Z, a boy torn from his family and forever altered into an elite, wolfish soldier for the Lunar Queen; Carswell, a wealthy young boy whose schemes and con games are interrupted by compassion; Cress, a young "shell" whose ingenuity causes her to be exiled into space; Winter's regret over the use of her gift prompts her to vow not to use it again, with terrible results; and Kai brings his beloved android to a simple mechanic's shop, with life-changing results.

There is also "The Little Android," a bittersweet tale based on "The Little Mermaid," where a robot falls in love with a human. While the novels are a complete story unto themselves, these short stories allow Meyer to fill in the cracks between her stories, exploring the characters at pivotal, life-changing points in their lives. For some, it's simply finding a new place in life.
