Very good book!
This a great book for someone who is new to reading for their entertainment but it also allows an avid reader to get lost in the mysterious world that the author has created. I enjoyed every page of it and like me, I think everyone who reads the book will be begging for the rest of the series!
Wonderful story line!
Wonderful book. It was very easy to read, I can not wait for the next book in the series. It takes a while to get started as it immerses you into the world of Ick, just like any book that begins a series, Then takes you on a whirlwind adventure where you meet new creatures as Ick does and learn to be true to youself and your friends.
Tripp has created an amazing world to visit in this series!
I received this as a promotional copy from the author.
I really liked the story; it was engaging, it moved along at a good pace, and it was fun. I was completely absorbed into this world from the beginning, and had a hard time putting it down before I finished.
While the author absolutely shows a great deal of promise, and has no lack of creativity or the ability to create an amazing world, the book could have benefited a good deal from more careful writing and/or a much better editor. The sentences are too simple, even for a young adult novel. The author uses the name of the subject too often in most paragraphs, and misses easy transition opportunities that would have allowed the book to flow more naturally. I found myself desperately wanting to take a red pen and help. Also, and this is again more the editor's fault, the last quarter of the book has more typos than it should.
My only other negative comment is that I regularly felt that the title character was written "younger" than his 16 years. Before I found out his age, I just assumed he was 11 or 12. This contributes to the book feeling a bit uneven, as well. There are also fairly constant "deus ex machina" moments; not until the end of the book does Ick really play a hand in his own destiny. As I have come across this pretty often from new authors, I am willing to assume that in this case it is not a lack of ability or talent, merely of experience.
These issues are distracting, and in a lesser story could have been too annoying for me to finish the book. However, as I said, the story was really fun to read, and I found it hard to put down. I really want to read the next in the series. Any and all of the weaknesses present in this book could be and likely are due in large part to the fact that this is a first novel, and am hopeful and confident that his writing will mature as he gains experience.
