Five Stars

It's nice having most of her stories in one place.

Fantasy Anthology

Fantastical Ramblings by Irene Radford is an anthology of previously published fantasy stories. The author includes a short prelude to each story explaining the inspiration or background for each story. I found this added to my enjoyment of the stories. I often prefer mixed author anthologies because it gives me an opportunity to find new authors to enjoy. Reading a survey of one familiar author's work was a different experience, but I found I liked these stories very much. There were two stories from her Merlin's Descendents series and two from her Dragon Nimbus series which will appeal to readers of those novels. I found the Lady's Choice, a story about Katya, Lady Assassin from [...] quite intriguing which has lead me to include more of these stories in my to be read list (darn it). The Fall was quite lyrical and beautiful and very different than the others. I recommend this anthology to any readers of fantasy.

A good way to pass the time at the dentist

This was a fun collection of stories. A handful of stories were well written, and a handful were clichéd and predictable. The real stand-outs were "The Sword of Herakles" which combines classical mythology with Arthurian legend and a fun story called "Dragon Treasure".

I wouldn't recommend paying more than a few dollars for this collection, but if you have the opportunity to purchase it cheap, it's worth the cost and will help you pass the time at the dentist office, airport, etc

Set time aside for this one

Since there were exactly 12 stories in this book and I was on a trip to visit family that would take 12 days, I decided to read one story each day. Well. The first story was so much fun, I sneaked ahead to the next one and then, well, I read the whole book in one sitting. Each story is full of wondrous characters, some of them non-human, and delicious conundrums with interesting resolutions. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

good one

A very good read. I usually don't like collections of short stories because one I will like but the rest are losers. I enjoyed everyone of the stories in this book. Nice mix.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic

Publisher's Summary:

Lycentia... the City of Light... the city where finance, friendship and faith are being blended together to produce what could be a fabulous future for all Betrovians.

Patrik, the recalcitrant innkeeper and Galena, his younger daughter, load up the wagon, lock up The Lonely Fox Inn and head east for Lycentia. The goal? To hand-deliver Harrak's scrolls, the ones Patrik discovered in a musty cave, to Oliver III, the Netherene High Priest. The problem? The scrolls are not what Patrik thinks they are! But how, if at all, can Patrik discover the truth before it's too late?

Who was this Harrak, the supposed author of these infamous scrolls? And why are the Lycentian Netherenes striving to eradicate Harrak's writings? Even to the point of killing those who express faith in those writings? Teophelus, the neophyte priest, is in love with both his calling and Patrik's daughter Galena: So just what are his motives for helping Patrik understand the true meanings hidden within those scrolls?

Edelin, the conniving, self-serving but lonely thief, nearly becomes entangled in a skirmish between Betrovian militiamen and Haarigoian raiders. He manages to elude the carnage and finds refuge in a village on the edge of the untamed Plains of Dreut. But not long after arriving there, he disappears into the night after stealing what may be the most-valuable piece of jewelry he has ever possessed. But might this bauble he now possesses lead Edelin into a future that no one would ever wish for?

Tamara is no longer the elder daughter of an innkeeper: She is now the wife of the King of Betrovia! She has the entire city of Lycentia at her beck and call. But why isn't she happy? Isn't this what she has always dreamed of? What, if anything, can bring her the happiness she desperately desires?

Members Reviews:

A worthy sequel to an excellent fantasy novel

What did you love best about Lycentia, Harrak's Scrolls?

I love the way Dave King keeps the focus on ordinary people, rather than filling his story to the brim with heroes.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lycentia, Harrak's Scrolls?

When you (the reader) realize that certain events are not accidents...

Have you listened to any of Ian Millers other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I've listened to his performance in Betrovia, the first book in Dave King's Betrovia series. As before, Ian Miller really imbues the story and the characters with life and personality.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I don't tend to react to books emotionally. The book definitely makes you care for the characters, though.

Any additional comments?

Lycentia definitely moves a bit slower than the first book in the Betrovia series, and I can just imagine that there are some who would be bothered by this. For my part, however, I found it very enjoyable. In truth, some of the best books ever written move no faster.

I love the emphasis the author places on the religious background of his world. This makes the motives and concerns of the people all the more vivid, in my opinion.

Dave King does an excellent job developing his characters in both Betrovia and Lycentia; once again they each feel like living, breathing people with their own personalities, ideas and ambitions.

A very enjoyable read with interplay between Chinese mythology and current time issues.

Andy does a terrific job intertwining his characters as the story progresses, delving well into the veils of personal relationships. He brings to life the cultures of Chinese, US Immigrants and Midwestern people. His book is suitable for most uninhibited people from teen to older than dirt. I look forward to more stories from Andy Sedlak!

Great

I found this book through a dream. I suspect that Andy Sedlak is magical. The book is uplifting and it describes important topics of the modern world. It will also make you laugh:-)

A Joy to Read

Dream of the Yellow Dragon is deeply moving. It's a novel that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

Masterful character development and a compelling and layered narrative make it a total joy to read.

Creative, sophisticated, and beautifully written

What a creative book, nicely weaving scenes in contemporary China, Chinese ancient mythologies, and debates about modern agriculture. I am a Chinese. I read many books written by English writers about contemporary China - I have to say Sedlak distinguishes himself from others by having detailed and vivid descriptions of daily life in China - he clearly has a deep understanding of this ancient/modern country and people who live there.

The story is fascinating, full of surprise, humor, and affection. It's difficult to put down once you start reading it.

Look forward to reading more books from this author.

Fun Tale

Reviewed by Author Charline Ratcliff for Rebecca's Reads (11/13)

Having immediately introduced us to the main players in "Dream of the Yellow Dragon" author Andy Sedlak then takes us on an interesting journey back and forth through time. Chinese mythology plays a huge part in "Dream of the Yellow Dragon", and coupled with today's technology, it makes for a fun read.

In summary, I found "Dream of the Yellow Dragon" to be well-written and for the most part it was fairly believable. Sedlak did a great job of paying attention to detail and one can definitely empathize with the various characters in this tale. "Dream of the Yellow Dragon" is an easy fictional read and can be enjoyed by readers of most ages. I am looking forward to reading more from Sedlak in future, and I hope the mystery of the Orient will always be included in his writings. Four stars...
