Military Fantasy at its best.
Myke Coleâs fantasy world, where magic has been made manifest, is like his characters â real and believable. I have no trouble in agreeing with his premise; that should magic be unleashed on the world tomorrow, that governments would act in much the way that his stories describe. It is after all, very much in human nature to control or kill what we donât understand or wish to accept.
I wonât go into specifics of the plot, because this is the third book of a trilogy and that would spoil the wonderful, deep world that Cole has created for his readers. The twists and turns that face each of the main character's belief systems and personal relationships are many and varied. I will admit that in Control Point (the first novel of this series) I... disliked Harlequin, and this view only slightly softened following the events of Fortress Frontier (book 2). I was therefore wary of a novel centred around him, but Cole is such a wonderful story teller that my worries became moot by the end of the first chapter.
Breach Zone is at its heart a love story, it is about two people with extraordinary powers who want to make a difference for those who come up latent, and it is about responsibility and how it weighs on different people in different ways. It is all this and more; a truly wonderful piece of urban fantasy in a world of sparkly vampire sludge.
The only problem I can see with Coleâs work was the continual use of military acronyms for various places, structures or institutions. It is highly realistic of the people he is writing about, and the speech and details on camp set up and equipment is a testament to Coleâs many years in military, contractor and law enforcement roles. But those who abhor acronyms, or who havenât read much in the way of military non-fiction may struggle a little at first to keep up with them all. Personally I didnât find it interrupted the story at all, but others may.
I have to add that on top of a great story, I have been following Myke Coleâs twitter and blog for a while after seeing him conversing with my (other) favourite authors. I have been taken by his generosity towards up and coming writers, and his solid work ethic â a far cry from the sometimes whimsical artistic take on writing, which does not really work for anyone who wants to write as a career. He is constantly looking for ways to pay it forward, and I think that many could learn from his example.
I can only sum up in saying, that I look forward to his future works as the world needs more Myke Cole books.
