Members Reviews:
Her mom and aunts changed the world, but will Annie be able to change Death?
I felt like I'd waited for this story forever. And it did not disappoint. I laughed, I cried, I railed against the injustices that seem prevalent for this wonderful magical family. Every series set in this world has given me the warm fuzzies, and every series has its own set of challenges. But this new series finally gives relief to the whole "tragic death of Donovan and the sad lonely existence of Nat "story lines'. Not right away and not in a finished way, but it eased much of the lingering sadness.
I can not wait for more....of any of them. (Still hoping she'll expand on the short stories about the sisters)
A good beginning :D
"Deathly Still" by Elizabeth Reeves is the first book in the "Unlife" series. Antigone, Goldie Locke's daughter, has come of age. But in the typical teenage fashion, she doesn't fully appreciate her life, her family and pretty much ignores what her mother has to say to her. Fairly immature in the beginning of the novel, her story takes the reader on a journey that goes up and down with her moods and how she views herself. Now, all of that takes place while she is training with Death. Nat, is a complicated and lonely character. As he trains Annie, she begins to suspect that he wants her to replace him. Overall, I thought that this was a pretty good start to another great series. I enjoyed seeing Annie mature throughout the novel, but at the same time I could feel her slightly depressed state of mind. I'm very interested in seeing the direction this series will eventually take.
Good story, could have been GREAT
An ordinary finds out she is something more. Throw in Death (as in the character not dying), dragons, some fairy tale characters and you would think it would be a 5 or more star story. It could have been if there had not been so much filler in the book. I do not normally pick apart descriptive books, yes I want to hear they have steel blue eyes or curly blonde hair, do I need to hear it 100 times in the same chapter? nope. I was also thrown off by one whole chapter that was a deju vu thing but was actually and entire chapter that was a rewrite of a prior chapter, almost word for word. Don't get me wrong this was a good book, I just felt that as good as some of the writing was, it could have been a GREAT book. I will be buying the next book in the series to see if it gets any better.
but never feels good enough due to her lack of magical skills
This is the story of Antigone (Annie is her preferred name). She grows up in a fairy culture, but never feels good enough due to her lack of magical skills. At age 18, she learns that she is to begin her lessons with Death. She is not at all happy with this situation, but always feels that she should give her very best in everything that she does. This book kept my attention until the very end.
