    Amazing Embodiment of The Story
As a girl who has a similar personality to Norah, this story really touched my heart. It really caught how a child would react in such a horrible situation, even when they barely knew the victims. Not to mention, the vocal performances were nearly perfect. The actors had a way with capturing each characters personality so that you knew who was talking at almost all times. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who loves a story of mystery, tragedy and character development.

If Artemis Fowl is Die Hard with Fairies, then W.A.R.P. is Oliver Twist meets The Matrix
The Reluctant Assassin is the first book in the W.A.R.P. series. W.A.R.P. stands for Witness Anonymous Relocation Programme. The assassin of the title is young Riley who has been apprentice to Albert Garrick, a Victorian illusionist who has fallen on difficult times and taken to using his unique conjuring skills to gain access to victims dwellings. On one such murderous escapade he brings his reluctant apprentice along on his first killing. Riley is saved from having to commit the grisly act when the intended victim turns out to be a scientist from the future, part of the FBIs W.A.R.P. program, and Riley is transported to modern day London, followed closely by Albert Garrick. In modern London, Riley is helped by Chevie Savano, a nineteen year old FBI agent sent to London as punishment following a disastrous, undercover, anti-terrorist operation in Los Angeles. Together they must evade the assassin, Albert Garrick, who has been fundamentally altered by his trip through the wormhole. Garrick is now more than human and is determined to track Riley down and use the timekey in Chevies possession to make his way back to Victorian London where, with his new knowledge on all things scientific and technological, he can literally change the world.

"Colfer has the ability to make you laugh twice over: first in sheer subversive joy at the inventiveness of the writing, and again at the energy of the humour." (Sunday Times)
"Readers mourning the end of the Artemis Fowl series can take heart: this first book in the time-bending W.A.R.P. series is an all-out blast." (Publishers Weekly)

A good foundation to a new series
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it is a good story, with interesting characters who you can't help liking.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Albert Garrick was by far the most memorable character, but then the villains always are. I have a feeling that we have not seen the last of him yet.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Maxwell Caulfield?
Not sure, he did a good job, but I could not help thinking that the story would have really flourished with some of the great narration of Nathaniel Parker from the Artemis fowl series.
A change of direction but a gripping story.
Despite being in my 60s, I am a great Artemis Fowl (AF) fan and, since Eoin Colfer was not going to write any more stories in that series, I was very interested to see how this new book developed. WARP is a very different type of story from AF (no elves, goblins etc), yet still has the flights of fancy, and attention to detail, that made those books so enjoyable.
A time wormhole enables the FBI, through the use of a key set to a particular historical date, to provide the ultimate safe house for witnesses who might otherwise be assassinated before they could give evidence. A young FBI cadet is forced, by circumstances, to pass through the wormhole to the Victorian period, where she meets a young lad who is an orphan being trained up by a stage magician who also happens to be a thoroughly unpleasant, ruthless, professional assassin.

    Five Stars
    Gift
    Predictable but good
I think if I would of read this book at a young age I would have probably given it 5 stars but as an adult I found it too predictable. I figured out the ending a quarter of the way through the book. Nonetheless, I thought it was still an enjoyable read and written well.
It's about a girl named Sarah who nearly drowned. Because of that near death experience she has become more sensitive to spirits. When her family moves to Houston, the house they move in immediately feels wrong to Sarah. It's not long before a ghost there contacts her and asks her for help. Sarah starts to do some detective work but there is someone out there that wants to keep the secrets hidden. Now her life might depend on discovering the truth.
Definitely would recommend this book to the younger crowd. Maybe 12-15 years of age.
    A great and exciting book!
After an accident that nearly caused her to drown, Sarah Darnell has always felt as if there was an unknown spirit that followed her wherever she went. Sarah expected for the eerie spirit to stop following her after her dad's transfer, which caused the family to move from Missouri to Houston. However, once she steps inside her new house, a cry for help can be heard in Spanish. As what was told to her by therapists, these spirits of hers can only be from her imagination after her near death experience. Yet, these images that are sent to her along with the cries are definitely real, and as she helps the young spirit, she is also able to solve the mystery that lies within it.
I found this book to be a definite page-turner because it keeps the reader alert with new surprises on every page. Not to mention that the mystery wasn't at all dragging and the plot was right to the point with Sarah's problems and visions. In addition to the simplicity of the book, I also found the book easy to understand. Nevertheless, I think that others with find this book exciting, as well as captivating to read.
There are several intense moments in this story, especially the parts when the spirit tries her best to reach Sarah, or when the spirit cries sadly for help. The author pens in great description, great enough that it allows the reader to imagine every detail...
Are you hearing whispers from the dead?
In my english class we had to read a mystery book and make a presentation. I saw that this book was one of the choices that we could choose to read.

    Members Reviews:
    A great intro to mystery.
I read this story as a child and loved it. the performance is a little disappointing.
Shorter, not as polished, but still compelling LD
What made the experience of listening to Summer of Fear the most enjoyable?
Knowing that it was a Lois Duncan novel so that even though the first 1/3 or half of the book is not as tension-filled as her books usually are, at some point things were going to get cray-zeeeee! (And they do).
What other book might you compare Summer of Fear to and why?
I think comparing it would give away too much of the plot/twists. I'll just say that it has an important and common feature of young girls' fiction: the rival female who threatens to usurp the protagonist's standing and relationships, pulling the wool over everyone's eyes except our heroine's.
Have you listened to any of Ruth Ann Phimisters other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't. But I'll say that I disagree with those who say she sounds too old to play the teenage narrator. Would you want an actual teen voice actor? I'd argue, no, you sure wouldn't. (For an example, why not listen to Audible's own samples of the re-issued versions of some of Duncan's novels? Not only is the material in the book adulterated--sorry, "edited"--- for a post-2010 readership, but the narrators they chose are distractingly immature-sounding, with Valley Girl-esque diction and intonation. No, thanks! I'll take a middle aged or senior citizen narrator over that.)
Besides, I've never thought that the "voice" (POV, writing narrative style) of Duncan's teen girl protagonists was meant to be literally that of a young girl. If you re-read the ones with first person POV, you might see that there's always a bit of intellectual and emotional distance between the character and others in her peer group, and possibly even between the character's increasingly wise internal monologues and her gullible actions at the beginning of the book. I think an older narrator is a good choice to represent that distance in a metaphorical way.
Last point--this book was published in the mid-1970s. Listen to the female actors in movies and radio then; they spoke with more poise and clarity than the young girls of today. Nowadays a more slang-y way of speaking with a more casual haphazardness is just more socially acceptable.

    Bleak but thought-provoking teen horror
I really, really wanted to like Scowler. The audiobook won the Odyssey award so I thought I'd give it a shot. It's hard to sum up how I felt about Scowler because I can recognize that it did some really great stuff and dealt with very big and important questions but I didn't enjoy reading (or listening to) it.
The story follows Ry Burke and his family after a meteorite crashes on their farm. Through flashback, we learn that the family has been terrorized by patriarch Marvin Burke but that Marvin was incarcerated 9 years ago, leaving Ry, his mother, and younger sister Sarah to pick up the pieces and try to recover from the abuse they suffered. However, Marvin has escaped from prison and returned to the farm. As a child, Ry created three imaginary friends to help survive his experience with Marvin and now they're back, resurrected by both the presence of the meteorite and the menace Marvin presents.
It's a good, although complicated, plotline but the story is EXTREMELY dark and very violent. Some of the tortures Krause invents for Marvin to carry out are downright haunting. Thankfully, we don't get too gruesome of a depiction of these tortures, the tone is almost clinical and detached. Still, there is plenty to leave the listener cringing in imagined pain and sympathy. But the subject matter is still very difficult, there is very little light for any of these characters and the result is extremely bleak and depressing. (WARNING: This book may also serve as a trigger for those who have experienced emotional or physical abuse.)
The narrator, Kirby Heyborne, does an admirable job of representing all of the characters' voices, especially that of Ry's most horrible imaginary friend, Scowler. He builds suspense well without seeming cheesy or frantic. However, that didn't save the story for me.
If you're looking for a thought-provoking horror story with plenty of depth and symbolism, this is probably the audiobook for you. However, if you don't want to read something so heavy or are squeamish about violence, it might be best to give this one a pass.

I was excited to find another book in this series!
I was so excited to read this and have a little more closure to the Janie story!
    Cannot get enough of Janie/Caroline/Alyssa!
What did you love best about Janie Face to Face (novel) and What Janie Saw (bonus short story)?
I have listened to the entire series so I'm really speaking to all the books that came before this as well as this very satisfying conclusion. I admit I want to know what happens next... but that's just because I'm going to miss everyone. Alyssa is a master and I could listen to anything she narrates.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved getting to know and hating Hannah. Her inner voice is cleverly done and builds some pretty palpable tension. Since I listened to the entire series, I feel like I've gotten to know all the characters as they've grown. They experience and react and learn. It's hard to say who is a favorite. All the characters are very well developed and complex. The love that seeps through all the confusion and fear everyone deals with throughout this series is beautifully delivered by author and narrator.
What does Alyssa Bresnahan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Alyssa is absolutely seamless in her narration of characters. She is consistent throughout the series for all the voices. She never outshines the words on the page but instead makes them shine brightly. There was that scene in the airport... I was literally on the edge of my seat and that is all Alyssa.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The books are too long for a single sitting but they were my companions for long stretches, sometimes seeping into what should have been sleeping or working hours.

    LIFE SAVER...THANK YOU!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SPEEDY DELIVERY! MY DAUGHTER TOLD ME AT THE VERY LAST MINUTE SHE NEEDED THIS BOOK FOR SCHOOL!
An excellent book worthy of four stars
A good reviewer always emphasizes positive aspects of a novel before the negative. However, I'm reversing the order this time because "The Weirdo" has such wonderful possibilities as a required reading book.
I am a generous star-giver, mainly because I rate a book based on its genre and type of book. I don't compare a young adult book with literary classics. I don't compare a thriller with a reflective thematic book. I wanted to give "The Weirdo" five stars, but the book has three problems.
The minor problem first: I don't like the title. Once we know "the weirdo," a severely disfigured teenager, burned in an airplane crash, the title loses its fear factor, which is never a problem for the other major character, Samantha (Sam) Sanders. The second problem--and a major one--is time sequencing. When the "kid reviewers" say the story is confusing, they are right. As an experienced reader (English teacher and librarian), I was confused, especially concerning the pivotal night-in-the-swamp episode. This time-line problem is caused by the writer's alternating narrative chapters by the Chip Clewt (the "weirdo") and Sam. The problem arises when Taylor merges them toward the end, making the time sequence for that important night episode confusing.
The third problem concerns "boring" as reported by "kid reviewers." Again, they are right. Halfway through, I set aside the book and read two others. When I picked this one up again, the pace picked up and the story went faster (also reported by "kid reviewers"). What causes "boring" are some chapters by Chip, written as beautiful college journal entries, which describe various aspects of the swamp. They really are a necessary part of plot and character development to show Chip's dedication to preservation of this beauty.
As for the positive points: What I want to emphasize is the book's important value as an addition to the young adult genre and ecological impact. The setting is the Dismal Swamp, National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina, here called the Powhatan Swamp. In fact, the University of North Carolina, in conjunction with public schools, created a middle school resource unit, using "The Weirdo" as the central focus of a multi-disciplinary study.

Sherlock Holmes: Think you know him? Think again.
    Members Reviews:
Terrible narrator makes a bad story worse
The plot in this tedious story of the young Sherlock Holmes is so absurd it is laughable! The pompous, plodding narrator makes the story drag even more. The action is based entirely on a series of escapes from unbelievable predicaments by the ever clever young Mr. Holmes. And then there is the paranoid theme, reminiscent of Moriarty, this time in the form of a secretive society planning to take over the world. Young readers would be advised to read or listen to the original Conan Doyle stories instead of this pastiche.
    Sherlock's violin
Third in Lane's "Young Sherlock" series, this clever tale further develops the budding sleuth's character and eccentricities. In particular we learn how and from where Sherlock gets his violin. But Sherlock's going to have to put on some muscle if he's going to survive many more such "physical" adventures.
May be the weakest of the three here on Audible.
What did you love best about Black Ice?
More Mycroft. He has always been a great character to me and it's a shame Doyle didn't use him more. Andrew Lane uses a lot good hints at how Sherlock may have become the consulting detective we know him as such as how he learns to deduce, play the violin, etc.
What other book might you compare Black Ice to and why?
Probably its two predecessors. I think they have gotten weaker as they have gone on though.
Did James Langton do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
He did, but I have Daniel Wayman's voice in my mind for this series. He definitely doesn't do as good of a job on Amyus Crow and at times I think his Mycroft was just what you would think of a stuffed shirt toff.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
So long Amyus, it's Mycroft's show this time.
    Any additional comments?
These books are enjoyable for adults who love Sherlock. However, don't think that you're going to surprised by the outcome or solution. They are young adult fiction and written as such.
