Title: The Children of the Roses
    Author: Warren Adler
    Narrator: Dominic Lopez

Length: 6 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-16

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Warren Adler's The War of the Roses leaped into the public consciousness and has since remained an essential thread in a wider tapestry of divorce iconography. Now Adler presents us with the chandelier-shattering legacy of Barbara and Jonathan Rose relived in their children, Josh and Evie, in a hilarious sequel to the original iconic tale about the perils of marriage, divorce, and the destructive power of materialism.
Unlike the legendary Roses, Josh's marriage to Victoria should have all the qualities of an everlasting union. But when an innocent caper involving missing Milky Ways catapults out of control at their son's elite private school, they find themselves entering into a shattering warfare of a different kind. Armed with the emotional mayhem inherited from their parents as well as compounded pressures involving a depraved headmaster, clandestine affairs, and Victoria's male-hating mother, The Children of the Roses presents a gripping story of the lengths to which parents will go to protect their children.
Little more than a child herself, Josh's ever-sympathetic and overstuffed sister, Evie, lavishes her "food is love" obsession on her beloved niece and nephew, who are coping with their own sense of loss. Meanwhile, Michael and Emily, soon-to-be children of divorce, orchestrate their own plan to keep their family together at all costs.
Adler once again demonstrates his storytelling mastery by revealing the intricate blending of the past with the present and how time unravels all seemingly perfect things to be darkly and even comically dysfunctional.

    the continuing saga...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend it with the disclaimer "the war of the roses was one of a kind, don't expect the same tension in this book".
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I was very creeped out by the children. I can see a possible third book. i would like to know how the kids grow up and what they get up to.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
didn't really like the narrator. perhaps a female voice would have been more engaging.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    if it was on netflix.
    Any additional comments?

I haven't read "War of the Roses." This is supposed to be the children from that book, after their grown. The family is perfectly dysfunctional, thank you very much. Each side has their own issues and blame the other, all the while claiming they don't want to effect the kids. The kids seem pretty normal or are they? Keeps you guessing how it will spint out. A bit of dark humor too.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.

I didn't expect to spend my annual company party sobbing in a photo booth, wearing nothing but a homemade grass skirt and a pair of coconuts. I also didn't expect to lose my apartment, my job, and my boyfriend in a rapid series of embarrassing events. Events that, unfortunately, also landed me in a bit of hot water, and left me with a secret that only money can fix.
So when the opportunity arose to enter my book club buddies into a contest for a chance to win $50,000, I took it. I just forgot to tell them about it. And guess what? We won. Which poses a problem, since I didn't bother to read the fine print.
Now, I need to find a way to convince Alex and Gigi, two gems I've never even met outside of a computer screen, to recreate a girls' trip with me - photos and all - by the end of the week.
    What could possibly go wrong?
Girl Tripping is a full-length, standalone chick-lit/romantic comedy novel.
It features a strong set of girlfriends, a sweet romantic interest, and some sassy heroines on the adventure of a lifetime.

Road trippin' with my two favorite allies...
The song stuck in my head listening to this book: Road Trippin' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I recommend the song for any road trip, but I digress.
I picked this title up because I thought it would be perfect for a road trip I was taking with my daughter. Especially since the two us of love road trips and reading. Unfortunately, the narrator ruined it. The accents were overdone and made the characters disagreeable. The worst part though is that she either sounded like she just finished running a mile, was coming up for breath after a dive, or simply spoke everything through a sigh. Yes, our heroine is exasperated through much of the book but not every sentence needs a gasp for air.
When it came to the plot itself there were some holes that weren't ever filled for my liking Restraining order? What kind of expensive surgery can wait that long? "Surprise" train to DC with destination remaining such a mystery?
All of those things can be forgiven though because if you've ever had a fantasy of meeting your Goodreads friends, meeting the folks you follow on Audible, or taking a vacay with your book club, give this book a try (just read it at your destination and not on the way there). This one probably would have made 4 stars if I hadn't listened to it.
    Remember to Smile!
Three days of utter chaos or was it total bliss when Lena learned the true facts of life.
Alex and Gigi, 2 of the best girlfriends a person could have, an ex husband and nutty sex craved ex boss, a beloved pet dog needing surgery, a winning story, a road trip and 3 guys - all this helping to make this a LOL, tongue in cheek comedy/romance that just rolls off the pages.
And when the 'truths' of this 'lesson' that Lena had to learn began to spill out, they all realized how valuable their friendships and relationships really were.
This story was marvelous and well worth the read.
I only had a problem with the narration being too 'breathy' with Stephanie Murphy sounding out of breath at the end of almost every sentence and would suggest a serious course of 'Breathing coaching' before attempting further narration jobs.
If you love laughter and an easy read story then this is the book for you.

    Publisher's Summary:
California. The summer of 1969. In the dying days of a floundering counterculture, a young girl is unwittingly caught up in unthinkable violence, and a decision made at this moment, on the cusp of adulthood, will shape her life....
Evie Boyd is desperate to be noticed. In the summer of 1969, empty days stretch out under the California sun. The smell of honeysuckle thickens the air, and the sidewalks radiate heat.
Until she sees them. The snatch of cold laughter. Hair long and uncombed. Dirty dresses skimming the tops of thighs. Cheap rings like a second set of knuckles. The girls. And at the centre, Russell. Russell and the ranch, down a long dirt track and deep in the hills. Incense and clumsily strummed chords. Rumours of sex, frenzied gatherings, teen runaways.
Was there a warning, a sign of things to come? Or is Evie already too enthralled by the girls to see that her life is about to be changed forever?
    Critic Reviews:
"The Girls is a brilliant and intensely consuming novel - imposing not just for a writer so young, but for any writer, any time." (Richard Ford)
"I don't know which is more amazing, Emma Cline's understanding of human beings or her mastery of language." (Mark Haddon)
"Emma Cline's first novel positively hums with fresh, startling, luminous prose. The Girls announces the arrival of a thrilling new voice in American fiction." (Jennifer Egan)
"Emma Cline has an unparalleled eye for the intricacies of girlhood, turning the stuff of myth into something altogether more intimate. The Girls destroys our ability to consider violence a foreign territory, and reminds us that behind so many of our culture's fables exists a girl: unseen, unheard, angry. This book will break your heart and blow your mind." (Lena Dunham)
    Members Reviews:
    The human side...
I thought this was a wonderful book. However, it is not a thriller, or a study of murder. If you want that get Helter-skelter, which is also wonderful.
This is a coming of age book, which just happens to use the (Fictionalised and renamed) Manson family murders as a narrative device to pull you through the book.
It is really about a mother-daughter relationship and then about female friendship, and then ultimately about first love. It handles all the characters believably and their interactions show genuine insight into the human condition.
There is excellent imagery in nearly every paragraph and the prose keeps the story moving at a nice pace.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes good writing as much as they like a good story.
    Uncomfortable and compelling
This reworking of the Manson Family saga takes the concept from a different perspective. The focus is really more on the powerlessness of some of the female characters and their readiness to be manipulated. It captures characters with an often ugly realism. I found the story engaging though it is primarily focused on the mundane elements of the individuals lives, thankfully not focusing too heavily on the gruesome.

    Different Maureen Lee
Maureen Lee has written three thrillers, only one is available via kindle. I loved the book, and was especially delighted to find it available on Kindle for such a reasonable price, it has a great story line and shows what a talented and diverse writer she is, a refreshing change from her usual novels. I hope there will be more in the near future.
Haven't finished but the story is very interesting.

In this brilliant debut, a psychologist finds herself drawn into the dark world of a serial killer - who may be closer than she thinks. Mulholland Books presents...Crossbones Yard.
Ray and Marie Benson killed 13 women before they were caught, tried and imprisoned. Five of their victims were never found.
Six years later psychologist Alice Quentin discovers a woman's body on the waste ground at Crossbones Yard. The wounds are horrifyingly similar to the Bensons' signature style. But who would want to copy their crimes?
When Alice is called in to consult, her first instinct is to say no. She wants to focus on treating her patients, not analysing the mind of a murderer.
But the body at Crossbones Yard is just the start, and the killer may already be closer than Alice knows.

    excellent
Excellent thriller. Great narration. I loved this book. Great from start to finish. I will look for more by this author.
    Good start to a series
I enjoyed the story very much. I look forward to getting deeper into the characters in future books. I think, however, that the book is let down by the narrator. Her voice sounds much too mature for Alice, whose point of view we're hearing. I think a younger sound would serve the characters and story well. Looking forward to the next one.
    Predictable.
The ending felt rushed. Author felt unpolished. Characters at times seemed pathetic. Hard to like a best friend so self absorbed. A brother so self destructive and a mother so unregrettable.
    Huge disappointment
I had such high hopes for this series. However, I find Alice Quentin to be foolish, amazingly devoid of self-understanding and psychological insight. Can't imagine really caring what happens to her on future books so I won't be reading any.
    Good story, but annoying heroine
This seemed so strange to me: the story was good; the background historical information was fascinating; the professional psychology of the protagonist seemed sophisticated; but the romance was an idiotic fantasy worthy of a rather dim13 year old, utterly ridiculous and rich in cliche.'And the heroiine's continual, reflexive negativity and scorn toward almost everyone she even glanced at was distasteful. (I keep typing because Audible requires more words.)

    Publisher's Summary:
Ancient Rome, 54 CE. Nineteen-year-old Ulrika is plagued with strange visions and dreams. In order to discover the truth behind her past and her unusual powers, Ulrika embarks on a dangerous journey to her father's homeland, Germania. There she discovers her calling, a rare gift known as the Divining.
Sent on a quest to find her destiny, she travels far and wide, from ancient Germania to the vast and exotic countries of Syria, Babylon, and Persia. Along the way she meets wise spiritual guides - men, women, and spirits alike - who teach her to harness her ability to heal and protect others.
Ulrika's journey also brings her close to the handsome trader Sebastianus Gallus, who must depart for his own quest to the Far East to gain riches for the powerful emperor Nero. But can Ulrika reunite with the man she loves, fulfill her profound destiny, and usher in a new era in Rome under the threatening rule of Nero?
    Members Reviews:
    Disapointed and dropping it
I read Soul Flame many years ago and loved it. I wished for a sequel, because I wanted to see what happens to Ulrika, her love interest Eirik and her father Wulf. So I was excited to find out that such a sequel actually did exist.
I started reading eagerly, but soon discovered that something was off. The story was slightly different from Soul Flame. Eirik was not mentioned at all, which was weird. Until at about the 20% mark we finally learn that Ulrika never had known the touch of a man and never had sex. Huh? So Eirik never happened, I guess?
Altering the story of the first part is definitely not ok for a sequel.
Is it fair to give it only one star just because when reading the synopsis I assumed that the ''but can Ulrika reunite with the man she loves'' refers to the man she loves in the first book and not to this ''handsome trader Sebastianus Gallus, who must depart for his own quest to the Far East'' from the sentence before? Maybe not.
    A Disappointing Sequel
I have just started reading the Divining and I am so disappointed by this book. Having read Soul Flame many times, I always hoped for a sequel that would chronicle Ulrika's journey to find her father. While The Devining is a tale that does exactly that, it is a very different story than what happened in Soul Flame. So many critical elements and characters have been left out. The writing feels "off". It's as if Barbara Wood has given up and threw together a sequel to appease her fans, thinking no one would notice everything that was left out from the first book. I'm not sure if I will end up finishing the entire book, it's a huge letdown after Soul Flame.
I don't understand all the good reviews.
This is not Barbara Wood's best book, and I've read most of her stuff. I read this before Soul Flame, not realizing it was a sequel. You don't need to read Soul Flame to appreciate The Divining, but I recommend reading it anyway because it is SO much better than this book. It's not terrible-there are dual quests in which some exiting things happen and some good historical detail, but...it's just so predictable.

Much needed companion to a complex novel
This summary is very well-written and I highly recommend it if you are planning to read this novel. We had this book in our bookclub and several of us had a difficult time sorting the plot. I wish we'd had this summary because having a good overview of would go a long way to sorting the plot and the characters.
The problem is the novel is multi-viewpoint with characters in two different times. Then when you add in the additional characters of multiple wives, and children, brothers, and sisters, not to mention parents addicted to opium, it gets confusing very quickly. I can't honestly say I'd recommend this novel to anyone, but if you are going to give it a try, then by all means get this summary.
Powerful book about women's issues and oppression
I'm always looking for a new novel to read. And sometimes its tough to know how good a potential book might be. The book flaps will only get you so far. Which is why I enjoy reading Instaread reviews: they give an in-depth look into the books, which whet my appetite or turn me off. "The Pearl That Broke Its Shell" tells an intergenerational story of two Afghan women whose lives are different but connected.
This Instaread summary captured the complexity of the novel and its characters, while also exposing their themes and symbolism. This review described and analyzed the relationships of the characters, exposing the subtlety that I would have missed. My favorite part was the exploration of the themes of patriarchy and destiny. Its easy to see that underpinning our world culture is a "boy's club" mentality that makes it difficult for women to succeed or advance. And then there's the theme of destiny, and if you are chosen before to do something grand or magnificent.

The Infuriating Rightness of Quaker Compassion
If you could sum up Home to Cedar Branch in three words, what would they be?
    Nobody's Perfect, But....
What was one of the most memorable moments of Home to Cedar Branch?
I think we all can agree after listening to this book that a skylight has no business in a doctor's examination room.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Inside the Quaker Meetinghouse, when not only the ex-husband seems to fall under the Quaker spell but the battered wife starts to lose some of her hate and anger.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, sitting on the deck with my coffee on a Sunday morning listening to this book was lovely.
    Any additional comments?
If you ever wonder about the Quaker sensibility and feasibility of non-violence in our society, this book is a good one to see it in action in a humorous way.

    ~~ A somewhat tragic story ~~
The original book by M.L. Stedman is a fictional story of a couple, Tom and Isabel, who live and work (lighthouse) on an island off the coast of Australia. Tom is a WWI veteran. In 1926, a man and his baby are washed up on the shore. The man is dead but the couple decide to raise the baby girl as their own. Tom wants to be truthful but Isabel, who has suffered three miscarriages and can no longer have children of her own, wants to keep it all secret.
During this time the real mother, Hannah, is looking for her husband and Grace aka Lucy. As the story unfolds the law becomes involved, Tom takes all the blame and ends up in jail. Lucy, wrenched from the only 'parents' she has known, experiences great anguish. The original actions of Tom and Isabel reverberate throughout the years affecting not only them but all the others involved.
This summary (think DETAILED review) provides all the spoilers and is a good summary for book club readers, aiding discussion and understanding of the book. There is a wonderful character analysis. In the 'Themes' section the subtitles are: darkness, light, loss, death, motherhood, isolation and forces of nature. Don't have time to read the original but want to sound intelligent when your friends are telling you all about it? Then this is for you! Instead of reading 354 pages you can read this Instaread synopsis in 18 pages!
Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz
A good summary of an interesting story
Tom and Isabel live on an island where Tom is a lighthouse keeper. He has chosen to live there for the solitude, and as a way to cope with his disillusionment from his service in WWI. When a boat washes up on their island containing a dead man and an infant, Tom, at Isabelâs urging, hides the babyâs origins and they adopt her as their own, naming her Grace. Later, when Tom discovers that the babyâs mother is alive and searching for her, his innate honesty compels him to reach out to the mother and reconnect her with her child, Hannah
    M. L. Stedmanâs The Light Between Oceans is a compelling novel about contrasting symbols and emotions, and based on Instareadâs Summary & Analysis of the Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman, it is a book that lovers of profound fiction will thoroughly enjoy reading.
