Publisher's Summary:
The sequel to the Pulitzer Prize-winning best seller Advise and Consent from Allen Drury, the 20th-century grand master of political fiction - a novel of the United Nations and the racial friction that could spark a worldwide powder keg.
International tensions rise as ambassadors and politicians scheme, using the independence of a small African nation as the focal point for hidden agendas. A cascade of events begun in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations could lead to the weakening of the United States, the loss of the Panama Canal, and a possible civil war. Allen Drury paints a vivid and laser-accurate portrait of Washington and international politics, from top-secret conferences to elite cocktail parties, club luncheon rooms, and the private offices of the key players in government. This novel is as relevant today as when it was first published.

Interesting and still relevant
I wanted to read this after re-reading "Advise and Consent," 50 years removed from my first reading, and upon discovering that there was a sequence of books by Drury.
I found it to be interesting, but a large part of that opinion is due to the remarkably (in my view) prescient nature of the subject, as if it were predicting the events of the civil rights movement which followed its publication. Sadly, from a societal point of view, it remains topical still.
As was the case in the first book, Drury's style frequently has him shifting from one person to another in a jarring and sudden fashion, leaving you wondering "who just said that?" However, once you get used to it, it's a minor irritation.
Overall, I don't think its as cohesive as the first book, but it doesn't dissuade me from reading the next in the series which, again, appears to have foreseen the current state of affairs.
Very strong follow-up to Drury's first
Not quite as good as Advise and Consent but still a compelling read. Although written and set approximately 50 years ago it's amazing how the issues confronted by the country and the characters still are relevant today. Enlightening that there was depicted so much frustration with, and unfairness at, the UN. The same views of the UN exist today.
The language on race is probably the only thing that belies the fact that the book is not contemporary. But the language on race rings very true to the times in which the story takes place.
I am a fan of the Advise and consent series.
A Shade of Difference allows the reader to feel the racial environment of the late 1960s/early 1970s. It offers one perspective on the UN. The character development is complete but slows the read down a bit with too much introspection by the individuals.
A Timely and Timeless Saga of Our Political Process!
An in depth analysis that follows up the characters in Advise and Consent. However, readers need to be patient with his wordy narrative. It is an amazingly timely saga given our current political upheaval!!
Read this book Mr Trump
Read this book when it first came out. Have read it two timees since. Finished it again last week. It should be required reading for all politicians Especially the current president. i
