    Entertaining frippery!
This is a very short story, had it playing in the background while doing chores this evening and before I knew it, it had come to a (quite abrupt) end. The narration was a bit rushed, but the whole thing fitted the bill of being a very easy listen. Bought on a special deal, I think I would have felt short changed if I'd used up a credit to purchase this.
    Excellent
An excellent short story. Escapism and the feel good factor makes this a story that you have to finish.
    Paris for one
I thought it was a well thought out story with twists and just when you think you know what will happen the story takes a turn in a different direction. Really enjoyable book for a short read.
    ok ish
What would have made Paris for One better?
this was the second one of Jo Jo Moyes books that I have read and although it was good I didnt find it addictive like the last one but an enjoyable read.
    The greatest love fest city
Cute little novella which was both enjoyable and quite amusing . Nicely paced and in this case well narrated it brings the memories of Paris flooding back.

Im lying here in a bed, my head full of regret, with only a little bird flitting through a tree to comfort me. Friends want to visit, but I refuse them. So my carer, Sheila, has given me a task to keep me occupied. An A to Z list. Think of a part of my body for each letter. Tell a little tale about it. When I reach H for heart, what will I say? How we loved to string crocheted hearts in trees? How our hearts steadily unravelled?
So I begin with A. Adams apple. Will you be there to catch me when I fall?
    Critic Reviews:
"I loved The A-Z of You and Me. James Hannah has an unerring eye for the tiniest detail within the biggest picture. This wry and tender love story is powerful, lyrical and moving." (Catherine O'Flynn, author of Costa prize-winning What Was Lost)
"Wonderfully quirky and contemporary. Hannah's writing has the accomplished feel of a far more experienced novelist." (Guardian)
    Members Reviews:
Well Written and Narrated but Depressing
Just an ordinary guy who has some bad experiences early in his life, makes some bad choices, has more bad experiences and continues to make bad choices and ends up in a nursing home at a relatively young age. The ordinariness of the story is what sets it apart from so many other novels. I have known many people just like this guy. People living an ordinary life and then looking back at what went wrong.
The Private Story of Someone You Know
Would you consider the audio edition of The A to Z of You and Me to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print version. I really enjoyed listening to this book, though.
What other book might you compare The A to Z of You and Me to and why?
In terms of what I've read, it's a unique story and stands alone.
What about Peter Nobles performance did you like?
I like that the depiction of his characters is convincing . Mr. Noble has a pleasant voice, his timing is relaxed, and his narration is thoughtful. Between the excellent quality of the writing and Peter Noble's performance, the story went by very quickly and always held my attention.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"Previews in reflection: sometimes you have no choice but to skip to the end of the story"
    Any additional comments?
The author has my appreciation for a good story. I feel that I got a peek inside the head of a young man who could be have been my brother, father, or any number of friends, during that transitional window of time between the irreverent immortality of youth to the realization of adulthood.
    Absolutely loved this book!
Great book I couldn't put down but didn't want to end. The readers voice was perfect for this book.
    Thought provoking, tender story.
The author takes the reader deep into the psyche of the main character and slowly reveals the story of his life: the difficulties, loves and hates. The pace is rather ponderous, but this seems eminently appropriate. I found it compelling as I gained a better understanding of the characters and the complex relationships between them; of the problems, anguish, regret and compassion, such as affect many of us in our own experiences throughout life.
    Every minute is beyond value
There are a huge amount of 'death books'on the market and it is very difficult to pick out the good stories from those that are simply sentimental and mawkish.

    Publisher's Summary:
"The Broken Heart Surgeon" is what they call me. TV viewers loved seeing a top-flight heart surgeon with a loving family, a man who had everything, make a single tragic mistake, something so minor that if I had done it in a bar I would have gotten laid or bitch-slapped. Who in the world would have ever thought it would have led to this? I know I didn't. Doing twenty years in a maximum-security prison. Surrounded by people I paid a great deal of money to live away from on the outside. So this is how it ended. Me behind bars. Explaining to you everything that happened in the middle will take a while, but what the hell does it matter? Telling you how it all began is easy. I remember it like I remember my name, like the first time I made love to my wife, like the day my first child was born. It all started simply enough. It all started with just a little tweak.

    An Entertaining Read
The story of the man who has everything and how with just an over-think here and a belief in the value of manipulation there - it is all gone. This is a very entertaining story.
    Dreadful
    Any additional comments?
It's a good idea, but the writing and narration are both really poor. I'm surprised Audible is selling something so amateurish.

Title: The Sex Lives of Siamese Twins

Length: 13 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-03-15
    Publisher: Random House Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The famed - some would say notorious - author of Trainspotting and many other brilliant offenses against common literary decency comes at last to America, with a dark and twisted tale of personal training and abject codependency in the fading glitter of Miami's South Beach, with a novel that asks the provocative question: Why would you want to be "the Biggest Loser" anyway?
When Lucy Brennan, a Miami Beach personal-fitness trainer, disarms an apparently crazed gunman chasing two frightened homeless men along a deserted causeway at night, the police and the breaking-news cameras are not far behind. Within hours, Lucy becomes a hero. Her celebrity is short-lived, though: the "crazed gunman", turns out to be a victim of child sexual abuse and the two men are serial pedophiles.
The solitary eyewitness, the depressed and overweight Lena Sorenson, thrilled by Lucy's heroism and decisiveness, becomes obsessed with the trainer and enrolls as a client at her Bodysculpt gym. It quickly becomes clear that Lena is more interested in Lucy's body than her own. Then, when one of the pedophiles she allowed to escape carries out a heinous sex attack, Lucy's transition from hero to villain is complete. When Lucy imprisons Lena, and can't stop thinking about the sex lives of Siamese twins, the real problems start.
In Lucy and Lena, Irvine Welsh has created two of his most memorable female protagonists, and one of the most bizarre, sadomasochistic folie à deux in contemporary fiction. The Sex Lives of Siamese Twins taps into two great obsessions of our time - how we look and where we live - and tells a story so subversive and dark it blacks out the Florida sun.
    Critic Reviews:
"[A] reliably maniacal spin on the Pygmalion tale." (
    Publishers Weekly)
"No one can write about a sociopath in love with so much heart not only cleverly conceived but genuinely, hauntingly, transgressive." (
    The Guardian)
"This knockabout caper of Miami vice[is] a riot of sex and exercise." (
    The Observer)

A really great examination of what makes us
Please be advised that this book is chalk full off curse words and explicit sex, but worth the listen.I don't have expectations of books, but this one was very entertaining and thoughtfully done.
I loved how negative Lucy made all the trite "positive" affirmations that we throw around, while assuming it is still positive and not bullying.
Generally well cobbled and, in its way, a thinker.
    Enjoy
Irvine Welsh has once again done it!
Loved it! Intrigued, and amazed at every corner of the book! Thank you once again!
    Totally and utterly disturbed
For females that listen to or read this book: it will probably disturb you. Welsh wants to disturb you though. However, for some survivors of sexual violence, this book may be triggering.
    Beautifully crafted, witty, explicit
I became thoroughly absorbed by the two voices of the lead female protagonists...the book describes the effects of old emotional wounds - how they control the present if left unprocessed, and it portrays the 'taboo' emotions anger and fear deftly and thoroughly.

The Few: Book 1 - Gunnery Sergeant Jacob McCardle is the commander of the Marine Detachment at the US Embassy, New Delhi, when the president of the United States arrives on an official visit: the same man who, as a Congressman, sponsored the bill that had decimated the Corps in a cost-cutting effort. As the president arrives, the embassy is attacked and isolated by a mob of nationalists. With the Indian government seemingly unwilling to take action to restore order and with an ambitious vice-president seizing this as an opportunity to move up to the White House, it is up to Gunny McCardle and his small band of Marines to keep the president alive. Faced with tremendous odds, Gunny has to lead his Marines in an almost impossible task. That is nothing new to the US Marines. Impossible tasks are the Corps' forte. But can his small detachment keep up the tradition of the Corps and succeed despite tremendous odds?
The Proud: Book 2 - After the events at the US Embassy in New Delhi, the Marines are being brought back as a combat unit. Newly commissioned 2d Lt Anthony Niimoto, a hero of the embassy takeover, is with the first Marine battalion to get back into the deployment cycle. Assigned to anti-piracy, this is supposed to be a dull deployment. But when a US ship is seized by Somali pirates, it's First Platoon, K 3/6 at the tip of the spear. With SSgt Davidson, an ex-Ranger who returns to his Marines roots, the two of them must lead their platoon into harms way, ever conscious of Black Hawk Down, the Battle of Mogadishu. Was Tony Niimoto a one-shot wonder in New Delhi, or does he really have what it takes to be a leader of Marines?
The Marines: Book 3 - China is growing in power and in need of raw materials. When an aggressive general, with encouragement from an unnamed puppet master in the Politburo, moves to seize the Spratly Islands from The Philippines.

A couple diamonds in the rough, but mostly rubbish
I am a big Jane Austen fan, but some of this was actually painful to read. This is a collection of works she never finished, and honestly, if I were her, I'd be embarrassed to have anyone reading most of what's in this.
The first part is the worst, the second is improved but not great. Her history of England is amusing, but hardly grounded in fact - this was the most enjoyable part of the collection.
After there is a disconnected collection of fictional letters (one of which is of interest for I feel it formed the idea of Sense and Sensibility to her) & lastly another incomplete book.
All the incomplete works are epistolary novels. Her history is complete.
The diverment of the history & the singular letter mentioned are the only things I consider worth the time of reading. Otherwise, please pass this by & read one of her complete works.
Good for Austen Completists, But Consider a Different Edition
This is an early Jane Austen work, written when she was a teenager and unpublished during her lifetime. It's not a great story, but is a good read for serious Austen fans - you can see her experimenting with the ideas and techniques that she would later use to better effect. The book is a romance told in a series of letters, but mocks many of the conventions of romances.
My main complaint about this particular edition is the typesetting, which is done with unappealing and difficult to read block print. If you're interested, I would recommend that you start with the (free) Kindle version, or look atLove and Freindship: And Other Early Works of Jane Austen (Classic Reprint), which looks like it was typeset more appealingly.
    For Austen Fans Only
Early works from Jane Austen. Some of the stories are funny, but in that dry, British kind of funny. Others were just annoying, like an Aunt going on-and-on about how put out they were about what to do with wedding dinner after the groom died just before the wedding. Not the best, but again, it's early works, so definitely doesn't have the same polish as many of her other stories.
    A Naughty Austen!
That Jane, she is such a naughty writer. For those of you who think her the height of Victorian respectability and prudence, delve into the tale where she shows her wickedly funny side.
This is a collection of letters, rather than a traditional novel. She wrote this in notebooks prior to becoming an adult and it reads like the 'rough drafts' it probably was. Actually most of the book reads like a really funny Saturday Night Live skit.
It is a story told through letters about a young couple in love. Naturally, one of them dies and the other is left to carry on in a cruel and wicked world. Sound sad? Not an all! The entire thing is a parody of the sentimentality that was so popular in the novels of the time. A tongue in cheek classic that was delight from the first page.
    Well then.
I wasn't sure what to expect but I read it.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Lost Wagon is the story of one man's hope of a finding a better life for his family. Deeply in debt and worried that his children will be forced to struggle all their lives to make ends meet, Joe Tower hears stories of free land in Oregon and a better way of life. The tale of the "promised land" does not move his wife Emma to support their leaving all they have behind until a catastrophe gives them no other choice. Intimate and glorious in its description of everyday events, thoughts, and hopes, this story is an excellent representation of what like was really like back in frontier days. The story brings us back to a simpler time, before texting instead of talking and not knowing who your neighbor is. Not an easier time, but certainly a different way of life. Fathers still wanted the best for their children. Mothers still worried about sick babies and couples still loved and supported each other. Elegantly descriptive, it captures the grueling tedium of daily life along with the straightforward characterization of people and events. The way West to a better life was filled with perils: blizzards, outlaws, stampedes, Indians, and starvation but the determination and courage of this family group, alone on the prairie, is a gripping listen.

    Good tory
Would you listen to The Lost Wagon again? Why?
    no. once was fine.
What about Jim Robertss performance did you like?
Nice voice. Good pacing. Good character voices.
Who was the most memorable character of The Lost Wagon and why?
    The whole family.
    Any additional comments?
As the description says, and I agree... an excellent representation of what like was really like back in frontier days.
    Worst Narrator Ever
What would have made The Lost Wagon better?
    A different narrator.
What did you like best about this story?
I didn't get very far, but Kjelgaard has always been able to engage me in the past. The story is not the problem.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He read like a robot, like the voice on my GPS. Sometimes he'd end a sentence and then see that there were more words attached to it on the next line. There were times when I laughed out loud at how bad it is, or found myself holding my face in my hands. It started to get a little better, and he was okay with women's voices.
    Any additional comments?
When I was young, Jim Kjelgaard was among my favorite authors. I really looked forward to listening to this story, but I don't think I'm going to be able to finish the first chapter. Maybe I'll give this another shot when I'm more patient.
