    Publisher's Summary:
A young sheriff and a hardened killer form an uneasy and complicated bond in this mesmerizing first novel set on the plains of Montana.
Steeped in a lonesome Montana landscape as unyielding and rawas it is beautiful, Kim Zupan's ThePloughmen is a new classic in the literature of the American West.
At the center of this searing fever-dream of a novel are two men - a killer awaiting trial and a troubled young deputy - sitting across fromeach other in the dark, talking through the bars of a county jail cell: JohnGload, so brutally adept at his craft that only now, at the age of 77, has he faced the prospect of long-term incarceration; and Valentine Millimaki, low man in the Copper County sheriff's department, who draws the overnight shift after Gload's arrest. With a disintegrating marriage further collapsing under the strain of his night duty, Millimaki finds himself seeking counsel from a man whose troubled past shares something essential with his own. Their uneasy friendship takes a startling turn with a brazen act of violence that yokes together the two haunted souls by the secrets they share - and by the rugged country that keeps them.

    Great language and performance
If you like Cormac McCarthy, you will probably like this book. The reading by Jim Meskimen is excellent.
    buy it.
this book is not for the faint-hearted.
incredibly Vivid writing, the riding equivalent of a Renaissance masterpiece. I had no idea that I could feel sympathy like that for a cold-blooded killer.
    Perceptive Narration
At first I was bothered by Meskimen's almost stubborn, it seemed in my mind, lack of expression and refusal to acknowledge the writing style, but by the end of the book it was all so clear. His performance was brilliant. He read the narrative in the skin of the main character, Val, and hence his read seemed at odds with the sometimes flowery writing in the same way that Val seemed at odds and isolated, detached from the world around him. One of the most amazing audiobook performances I've ever heard.
Quality book worthy of your time
The Ploughmen started off a little slow for me I had a hard time relating to the characters at the beginning. But, by the time I neared the end of the the book I wanted to take my time a savor the story while at the same time I was anxious to know how it ended. A very well written and descriptive book
Too Literary For Its Own Good
There is an effective, simple, emotional story buried under the dense literary descriptions and obscure vocabulary. I loved the narration by Jim Meskimen, he brought the dialogue and characters to life. I wouldn't have been able to wade through the deluge of words without his wonderful reading.

    Excellent Story, Alternative Narrator Requested
This book was wonderful: detailed, thoughtful, intimate. The audio version would be much better if there was an alternative narrator to the unabriged version.
Well conceived, narration hard for me hear.
This is a wonderful story! I had to get the print version too, (which I do occasionally just to mix it up. ) Although the narrator has wonderful expression and a soothing voice. I often didn't catch the first letter or syllable of a word and the meaning was lost to me. I went back and read passages for content and realized I was missing a lot. This is more significant in in this particular book, because some of the culturally different concepts/words are new for me, this may not be a problem if you are very familiar with events and topics surrounding partition in India. After about 1/2 of the book was read, I did acclimate and get better at guessing the consonants, but I do think the narrator needs to annunciate the beginnings of words a little more. Overall I would read this book next time, but the essence of the story remained intact.

    Language: English
    Release date: 09-03-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 45 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
From best-selling author Kristin von Kreisler comes a poignant, uplifting novel of one woman's journey to healing, and the surprising soul mate that helps guide her there.
Lila Elliot knows she's lucky. A shooting rampage at her office left several colleagues dead and others seriously wounded. Lila's injuries will heal in time. Yet though she gratefully retreats to her best friend's house to recuperate, Lila can't quite move past her fear and anger. Being drafted into caring for Grace - a shaggy, formerly abused golden retriever - only adds to her stress. Lila has been terrified of dogs since childhood. But Grace, like Lila, needs time and space to recover. Grace keeps her distance, sensing Lila's wariness, and only perks up for Adam, the neighbor who rescued her.
Though struggling to make sense of her recent tragedy, Lila, an accomplished artist, begins to see beauty in Grace's wisps of fur and haunted eyes. As Adam points out, Grace, too, has suffered through no fault of her own. And in helping Grace to trust, Lila is being gently nudged toward the courage she needs to do the same. Rich in warmth and humor, An Unexpected Grace is a story of compassion and connection, and of finding that what truly makes us whole again may be the love we give away.

    for dog lovers
A little adolescent but very heartwarming story with clever dialogue. Will recommend it to my friends!
    For Dog Lovers
The story was pleasant and the characters were fairly interesting. The narrator was almost insufferable. He nearly ruined the book. Grace, the dog, was the best part.. I enjoyed her a lot, even though it was hard to believe how well behaved she was in spite of being seriously abused prior to being adopted.
Someone needs to work on pronunciation!!
What did you like best about An Unexpected Grace? What did you like least?
The story is pretty good. I loved Grace.
What was one of the most memorable moments of An Unexpected Grace?
The moment where she realizes that she does want to keep Grace and the reasons for that moment.
Would you be willing to try another one of Laurence Bouvards performances?
No. The mispronunciation of even common words drove me crazy. I mean how hard is it to pronounce Nissan? Just listen to the commercials and copy it for Pete's sake!!!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Maybe.
    Any additional comments?
Try to overlook the lack of empathy the main character feels and engenders the listener to feel at first. The story is worth that - if you can get past the narrator.

    Language: English
    Release date: 08-12-14
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Tom Putnam, an English professor at a Virginia womens college, has resigned himself to a quiet and half-fulfilled life. For more than ten years, his wife Marjory has been a shut-in, a fragile and frigid woman whose neuroses have left her fully dependent on Tom and his formidable mother-in-law, Agnes Tattle. Tom considers his unhappy condition self-inflicted, since Marjory's condition was exacerbated by her discovery of Tom's brief and misguided affair with a visiting poetess. But when Tom and Marjory meet Rose Callahan, the campus bookstore's charming new hire, and Marjory invites Rose to dinner, her first social interaction in a decade, Tom wonders if it's a sign that change is on the horizon. And when Tom returns home that evening to a letter from the poetess telling him that he'd fathered her son, Henry, and that Henry, now ten, will arrive by train in a few days, it's clear change is coming whether Tom's ready or not. Martha Woodroof's Small Blessings is funny, heart-warming and poignant, with a charmingly imperfect cast of cinema-ready characters. Readers will fall in love with the novel's wonderfully optimistic heart that reminds us that sometimes, when it feels like life is veering irrevocably off track, the track changes in ways we never could have imagined.

    Our Book Club Choice
I struggled to finish this, a romance novel narrated with annoying southern accents. The unsurprising ending was a relief.
    Quotes don't count
Writing a novel where the characters think and speak in famous quotes (Shakespearean or otherwise) does not bode well with this listener. Even Lorelei King's amazing performance couldn't save the awkward conversations. Moreover, a story in which virtually every character is self aware is tiresome...especially when their internal dialogue is repeated over again. Spare me. Even the characters that weren't present were self monitoring! Ugh! This was simply awful. Please don't waste your money or time.
    Happy Endings
A nice story, a romance with literary aspirations. A few too many plot elements to resolve as conveniently as they do in this story, but it's nice to have an uncomplicated happy ending on occasion. Wonderful narration !
    Top listen of the year!
Would you consider the audio edition of Small Blessings to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print edition, so cannot offer any opinion.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I can't pick just one, they were all so wonderful, so human, so quirky in their humanness.
What about Lorelei Kings performance did you like?
Her ability to give voice to each character was wonderful. She made me "see" them as people in a way few narrators have done.
    Any additional comments?
A perfectly lovely book, a wonderful story, filled with humor, sadness, humanity. I loved this book.
    Sweet and Predictable
Would you consider the audio edition of Small Blessings to be better than the print version?
    Did not read
What other book might you compare Small Blessings to and why?
The quintessential Boy gets Girl novel.
What does Lorelei King bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Love her! She does a nice job on characters and always enjoy her as the Girl Bounty Hunter.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No - it was as expected.

    Publisher's Summary:
In James Patterson's first highly illustrated "diary fiction" story for teens, the mega-best-selling author's most endearing and original teen heroine ever proves that everyone can use a helping hand once in a while.
Margaret "Cuckoo" Clarke recently had a brief stay in a mental institution following an emotional breakdown, but she's turning over a new leaf with her "Operation Happiness". She's determined to beat down the bad vibes of the Haters, the Terror Teachers, and all of the trials and tribulations of high school by writing and drawing in her diary. And when life gets really tough, she works through her own moments of uncertainty through imaginary conversations with her favorite literary characters.
Cuckoo's also got a nearly impossible mission: she, along with her misfit band of self-deprecating friends (who call themselves "the Freakshow") decide to bridge the gap between warring cliques and "bring the Nations together". Not everyone is so willing to join hands and get along, but Cuckoo never stops smiling... until one of her closest friends, pushed to desperation by a Hater prank, decides that enough is enough.

Meet the Devohrs: Zee, a Marxist literary scholar who detests her parents' wealth but nevertheless finds herself living in their carriage house; Gracie, her mother, who claims she can tell your lot in life by looking at your teeth; and Bruce, her step-father, stockpiling supplies for the Y2K apocalypse and perpetually late for his tee time. Then there's Violet Devohr, Zee's great-grandmother, who they say took her own life somewhere in the vast house, and whose massive oil portrait still hangs in the dining room.
Violet's portrait was known to terrify the artists who resided at the house from the 1920s to the 1950s, when it served as the Laurelfield Arts Colony - and this is exactly the period Zee's husband, Doug, is interested in. An out-of-work academic whose only hope of a future position is securing a book deal, Doug is stalled on his biography of the poet Edwin Parfitt, once in residence at the colony. All he needs to get the book back on track - besides some motivation and self-esteem - is access to the colony records, rotting away in the attic for decades. But when Doug begins to poke around where he shouldn't, he finds Gracie guards the files with a strange ferocity, raising questions about what she might be hiding. The secrets of the hundred-year house would turn everything Doug and Zee think they know about her family on its head - that is, if they were to ever uncover them.
In this brilliantly conceived, ambitious, and deeply rewarding novel, Rebecca Makkai unfolds a generational saga in reverse, leading the listener back in time on a literary scavenger hunt as we seek to uncover the truth about these strange people and this mysterious house. With intelligence and humor, a daring narrative approach, and a lovingly satirical voice, Rebecca Makkai has crafted an unforgettable novel about family, fate, and the incredible surprises life can offer.

    Needs Untangling
Fascinating, listened to it three times through to untangle it all. should that be necessary?
Still thinking about it, weeks later.
Would you listen to The Hundred-Year House again? Why?
I absolutely would. Knowing the full story, I'd like to revisit the parts I thought were about one thing, but were really about something else. It's a rich story with characters you come to love, flaws and all. There is a sweetness and a satisfaction to the wrap up.
    Hmmmm
What made the experience of listening to The Hundred-Year House the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed the "mystery" of the house and wondering exactly "who" the characters were.
Would you recommend The Hundred-Year House to your friends? Why or why not?
If the story had stuck with just the 2 most recent generations I think I would have enjoyed it more. When it went back to the earliest years of the house I honestly lost interest and even got a little confused.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud frequently over some of the comments made by some of the characters!
Great Book Immediately Placed On My ReRead Pile
i love how this novel jumped back in time to four generations of inhabitants of the hundred-year house. starting in the "now" and going back with so many secrets intertwining all three generations.

    Résumé de l'éditeur:
Quand une vie ordinaire devient extraordinaire.
Philadelphie.

Born in Sweetwater, West Virginia, with a mop of flaming red hair and a map of the world rendered in port-wine stains on every surface of her body, Garnet Ferrari is used to being an outcast. With her sharp tongue, she has always known how to defend herself against bullies and aggressors but finds she is less adept at fending off the pilgrims who have set up a veritable tent city outside her hilltop home, convinced she is Saint Garnet, healer of skin ailments and maker of miracles.
Her grandmother, the indelible Nonna Diamante, believes Garnetsmystical gift can be traced back to the familys origins in the Nebrodi Mountains of Sicily, and now the Vatican has sent an emissary to Sweetwater to investigate. Garnet, wanting nothing more than to debunk this "gift" and send these desperate souls packing, reaches back into her familys tangled past and unspools for the church a tale of love triangles on the shores of the Messina Strait; a sad, beautiful maidens gilded-cage childhood in blueblood Virginia; and the angelic, doomed boy Garnet could not protect.
Saint or not, Garnet learns that the line between reality and myth is always blurred and that the aspects of ourselves we are most ashamed of can prove to be the source of our greatest strength, and even our salvation.

    Weird but defintately wonderful
I bought this book for all the wrong reasons: it was on offer, I liked the title and I loved the cover.
Two chapters in, I was so taken aback by the style and the content that I thought, "Damn, I knew those were stupid reasons to buy a book" and almost stopped reading.
Then I examined my own reaction and realized that I was in a kind of reader's shock. The problem with reading something original and different is that the WTF reaction can produce complete disorientation. My imagination struggled for traction, not because the writing was difficult or obscure, but because the style and the content of the story were so different from what I'd expected. I was having difficulty figuring out what I was supposed to do with the book.
The answer, of course, was open up my imagination, relax my preconceptions, and listen to what the author had to say.
A third of the way through the book, I was in love: with the characters, with idea of a story told as a series of first person accounts on tape to a third-party, with the deft skill Marie Manilla showed in moving back and forth along the timeline in a way that enhanced my enjoyment and deepened my understanding and with the constant dance between magic and reality, belief and logic, love and hate, fate and choice, that was presented in a series of bravura performances, ranging in intensity from a broadway musical, through classical ballet to a passionate flamenco.
This book made me think, made me cry and made me hope. Two thirds of the way through, I wanted it to go on forever. I wanted to wrap myself up in this world and never leave.
Sadly, I found the ending week and disjointed. I got nothing at all from the last chapter, which, although it bookended the first chapter, seemed so disconnected from the action of the novel that I became irritated with it.
There are things about the book that people may find challenging: the plot and the narrative style walk a tightrope between the reality and myth, making it hard to know what I was meant to believe or not believe; forcing me make and re-make my own decisions on the truth of the tale.
