    Title: Benjamin Franklin's Bastard
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Sally Cabot
    Narrator: David Colacci
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-07-13
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 37 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
An absorbing and compelling work of literary historical fiction, set in colonial Philadelphia, that brings to life a little-known chapter of the American Revolution - the story of Benjamin Franklin and his bastard son, and the women who loved them.
Sixteen-year-old Anne is an uneducated serving girl at the Penny Pot tavern when she first meets the commanding Benjamin Franklin. The time she spends with the brilliant young printer teases her curious mind, and the money he provides keeps her family from starving. But the ambitious Franklin is committed to someone else, a proper but infatuated woman named Deborah Read who becomes his common-law wife. At least Anne has William, her cherished infant son, to remind her of his father and to soften some of life's bleakness.
But growing up a bastard amid the squalor of Eades Alley isn't the life Anne wants for her only son. Acutely aware of the challenges facing them, she makes a heartbreaking sacrifice. She will give up William forever, allowing Benjamin and Deborah Franklin to raise him as their own.
Though she cannot be with him, Anne secretly watches out for her beloved child, daring to be close to him without revealing the truth about herself or his birth, and standing guard as Deborah Franklin struggles to accept her husband's bastard son as her own.
As the years pass, the bustling colonies grow and prosper, offering opportunities for wealth and power for a talented man like William's father. Benjamin's growing fame and connections as a scientist, writer, philosopher, businessman, and political genius open doors for the astute William as well, and eventually King George III appoints Benjamin's bastard son to the new position of Royal Governor of New Jersey. Anne's fortunes also rise. A shrewd woman of many talents, she builds a comfortable life of her own - yet nothing fills her with more joy or pride than her son's success and happiness.
But all that her accomplished son has achieved is threatened when the colonies - led by influential men, including his own father - begin the fight for independence. A steadfast, loyal subject of the British Crown, William cannot accept his father's passionate defense of the patriots' cause, and the enduring bond they share fractures, a heart-wrenching break that will forever haunt them and those they love.
A poignant tale of passion, family, love, and war, Benjamin Franklin's Bastard skillfully brings into focus a cast of remarkable characters drawn from real life, and vividly re-creates one of the most remarkable and thrilling periods of history - the birth of the American nation.

A wonderful adult portrayal of history
Would you listen to Benjamin Franklin's Bastard again? Why?
Maybe, I don't really relisten/reread books but I would consider it to follow more of the historical points.
What about David Colaccis performance did you like?
Yes I thought it was well read and well animated
If you could rename Benjamin Franklin's Bastard, what would you call it?
William Franklin's mother and her trials in the time of matriarch power
    Any additional comments?
I really enjoy historical fiction and I was keen with the way they portrayed the relationships that Franklin and Anne had. It was tasteful and not smutty. I also liked the sprinkling of historical points in the story.

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-07-13

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The legendary author of Play It As It Lays and Slouching Towards Bethlehem here trains her eye on the far frontiers of the Monroe Doctrine, where history dissolves into conspiracy (Dallas in 1963, Iran Contra in 1984), and fashions a moral thriller as hypnotic and provocative as any by Joseph Conrad or Graham Greene.
In that latter year, Elena McMahon walks off the presidential campaign she has been covering for a major newspaper to do a favor for her father. Elena's father does deals. And it is while acting as his agent in one such deal - a deal that shortly goes spectacularly wrong - that she finds herself on an island where tourism has been superseded by arms dealing, covert action, and assassination.
The Last Thing He Wanted is a tour de force - persuasive in its detail, dazzling in its ambiguities, enchanting in its style.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a major work by one of the shrewdest observers of America's political and cultural life." (Publishers Weekly)
"Simultaneously lucid and surreal...the result is entrancing." (The New Yorker)
"Dark detail, understatement and intelligence work their astonishing magic." (The New York Times Book Review)

Clever and Cold Exploration of USA's Heart of Darkness
Joan Didion is that rare thing: an American woman of letters whose pronouncements on that country's way of life are considered to bear great weight. Journalist, essayist, novelist and columnist, her intelligent and perceptive observations have probed her nation's psyche for three decades.
In this, her 10th book and fifth novel, she turns a fictional probe on the machinations of American politics in the Orwellian significant year of 1984. The story takes in the workings of US central administration and international diplomacy, as well as the American media and the shady operators who work on the fringes of State corruption.
Elena McMahon is a journalist reporting on the presidential election campaign when, to oblige her father, Dick, who "does deals", she goes to Central America in his stead. There she find herself adrift, a pawn in a game with rules she can only begin to grasp, at the heart of an arms trafficking operation and a political conspiracy around Treat Morrison, American Ambassador-At-Large.
Elena's story is related by an unnamed, "not quite omniscient author... who wanted the story to materialise for you [reader] as it did for me [narrator]". The novel employs such tricks throughout, calling attention to an awareness of its own methods and questioning the conventions of all modern narrative forms - fiction, journalism, thriller writing, reportage, even film scripts. "What we want here is a montage, music over," begins one chapter. "Angle on Elena. Alone on the dock... taking of her scarf and shaking out her hair."
Didion is a superb stylist with a number of signature techniques, the most characteristic being the way she repeats key phrases with minute but important variations. With each repetition a seemingly innocuous phrase - "Christ, what business are they all in?" or "My understanding is that Dick McMahon will not be a problem" - becomes ever more significant. Beginning with Elena's meeting with Treat Morrison, the narrative moves forward and back in time, layering phrases and events on top of each other with an incancatory rhythm.

    Publisher's Summary:
Young, smart and beautiful with everything figured out or so they thought. Born into a prosperous Greek American family, sisters Nicole and Theodora have achieved the perfect balance between the old world rich in Greek tradition and the freedom of life in America. Headstrong and independent, Nicole plunges into life head-first, too often ignoring the risks. Her talent and astute business acumen make her the perfect heir to her father's empire, but his old-world attitudes prevent him from giving the top spot to a woman. Nicole's world spins out of control when she falls for a married senator who shares her heritage and her dreams.
While struggling to navigate previously uncharted moral waters, she uncovers treachery and corruption that will break both her sister's and her father's heart. The decisions she makes will affect the happiness of those closest to her and will define the woman she is to become. The young and conventional Theodora weds and quickly learns that marriage is not the paradise she envisioned. She must soon confront the growing suspicion that her husband is not the man he seems. Forced to endure the constant disdain and disapproval of her patrician mother-in-law, she resigns herself to the fact that she will always be considered an outsider. As she struggles to succeed at her marriage, she seeks the wisdom and council of her beloved Greek grandmother who has been happily married for over half a century.
Ultimately she must come to terms with the reality of her own life and take responsibility for the role she has played in deceiving herself. As the dramatic plot unfolds, the two young women must confront deceit and betrayal and their own shortcomings while they struggle to preserve the values they cherish. Set in Baltimore, Annapolis and the tiny island of Ikaria, Greece, Circle Dance provides a view into the lives of a dynamic family that has successfully achieved the American dream without abandoning the customs and traditions handed down through their Greek heritage. Artfully intertwined plots bring generations together in a dance of rejoicing and mourning, loss and healing that will keep readers enthralled until the last page.

This review is mainly in Afrikaans with a summary in English:
Jakkals en Wolf het nog altyd Dana Nieuhaus se stem en vertelling en T.O. Honiball se strokiesprente by my opgeroep.
Geniet dit, selfs al is jy ouer as 12 jaar!
['Jackal and Wolf' is a collection of Afrikaans folktales about these two creatures that is very popular through many generations. In this audiobook Pieter W. Grobbelaar retells some of these stories in very vivid language.
Sly Jackals is known to outwit Wolf every now and again. In this collection of stories he goes all out to put Wolf in his place. Fortunately Heron takes the stage later in the book and Jackals meets his match.
Johan Nel does an outstanding job in his rendition of 'Jackals and Wolf.' He seems truly to be a voice artist.
This production is of a very high standard and though it could deemed to be a bit short, it is absolutely worth every penny you pay (as long as you understand Afrikaans, Dutch, German etc.). It is said to be focused on children from 9 to 12 years, but adults and people from all ages can enjoy it just as much.

Great, If You Haven't Read Other Howey?
I've read praises for Hugh Howey for, well, forever, and recently bought the whole "Wool" deal but haven't had time to listen to it. When I saw "The Hurricane" and saw that it was in a different style, I was intrigued and thought I'd give it a shot. I'm really glad I did. It is a really wonderful, people as fish-out-of-water, coming together, looking for hope story. And from what I've read from other reviewers, it is so unlike Howey's other books, I would've been disappointed/disgusted had I read it/listened to it after said works.
Even if you've read other Howey, give this a shot, maybe just as a Daily Deal, or something as it's fairly short (I got it cheap as a kindle/audio bundle). Judge it on its own merits. The characters are likable and flawed, they're thrown into an interesting situation, and there's a sliver of sunshine in a life that looked very dark indeed.
What's not to like? Well done, Mr. Howey!
    Not what I expected
What did you like best about The Hurricane? What did you like least?
The story was well written for what it was. It did a nice job of capturing a slice of modern life. It is probably my fault for not reading the reviews closer, but I was expecting science fiction. This was a teen anxst story with a Hurricane background. Not terribly exciting really.
What was most disappointing about Hugh Howeys story?
No real climax to the book. A little too pat in the story line. Was expecting something more along the lines of "Wool". My bad for expecting it to be science fiction.
Have you listened to any of Tim Gerard Reynoldss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. Does a find job of reading.
Do you think The Hurricane needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I wouldn't read it. I barely finished this one.
    Any additional comments?
If you are thinking about getting this because you liked "Wool", "Dust" or any of that series, don't bother. Not in the same ball park.
5 Hours Listening-Still Waiting for Story to Begin
Have loved every book by this author thus far. Am so sad at the lack of a story in this book. I wonder if it was an earlier work of the author, it didn't feel well developed.
Could be a good story but narrator kills the book
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tim Gerard Reynolds?
Just about anyone. I gave up shortly after starting because of how Gerard Reynolds pronounces words like calm and palm.
    Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed many books by Howey but this narrator all but ruined another book by Howey that was part of a series I just had to finish. just cannot get past his pronunciation to get into a new book.
    Realistic portrayal of a hurricane
I have never read such a realistic portrayal of living through a hurricane and its aftermath. The only missing facet is the length of time the actual storm can last. The longer term effects are touched on with the loss of the father's houseboat with most of his belongings and the mother's car.

    Action adventure
I enjoyed the story. Fast paced, action adventure. But is was to rushed. More detail and description would make it better for me.
    The narrator was good.
"This audio book was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review."
    I like.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
This book was great. Coming from someone who grew up in a generation of people wanting to be Indiana Jones, this hero has chops. It's an intelligent crew that will deal in violence, but would just as soon hang out in peace an use their minds to solve problems. Not too much machismo, not too lovey dovey. A good adventure story.
    Wow!!!
David Wood is a new author to, while Jeffrey Kafer is one of my favorite narrators. I absolutely loved this story with all of the action. Scenes of this book reminded me of some movies that I have loved. The author did a great job with the visualization and descriptions. The narrator did a fantastic job conveying suspense, awe, and tension. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. This story is a standalone listen. I will look for more books by this author and narrator. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher.
You certainly will not fall asleep on THIS one!
Bought this on the cheap from Audible, and did I ever get a deal!
The story: Dane, Bones, and the rest of their crew are treasure hunters. They decide to try their hand in digging or whatever it takes to get to the pirate treasure on the island off the Eastern coast of Canada which has thwarted many and cost both money and lives in others attempts. Will try to avoid spoilers, but here we have a fine interweaving of actual places and real history with several known and intriguing legends. Throw in plot twists, two different sets of evil bad guys, kidnappings, action and adventure, and lots of wiseassery and badassery, and you have this really great read!
Kafer does a great job with this one. Character interpretations and differentiations are clear and very well done, and the narrative parts are clearly presented. He is engaged with his narration and it clearly shows!
    Treasure hunting meets legends.
    Treasure hunting meets legends.
Oh my what can I say loved it couldn't put it down or rather stop listening. I listened to this while first working then while playing.
Move over Indiana Jones, there are new adventurers in in town.
I've never read/listened to David Wood before but it definitely won't be the last one I read.

If you like dystopian books, then this may be the read for you!
Antii Tuomainen is (a new to me) Finnish author that I first heard about last June while attending the Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, California.
I'm always on the look out for new authors to explore, so with that in mind I decided to listen to the unabridged audio version of The Healer by Antti Tuomainen and narrated by Simon Shepard before the end of March. Listening time for The Healer by Antti Tuomainen is 5 hours, 40 minutes.
The Healer is a dystopian, mystery/thriller set in Finland. I liked the characters and the storyline of this novel very much. The Healer is a very quick read. My only complaint about the novel is the ending. It leaves the reader hanging as to what the leading character meant by what he said!!! Arrggh, don't you dislike it intensely when an author leaves you wondering the ending of the book is supposed to mean??? Boo, to ambiguous endings!! Other than the ending, The Healer was a really good read.
    A challenge to survival.
Finnish author Antti Tuomainen contemplates a real-world disaster which has produced a dystopia, not only on Finland, but around the world. Climate change has sent humans looking for physical safety in high locations because of water encroachment. Not that the escape from water is compete, because in winter--the clouds and wind and rain and cold--are constant.
Pasi Tarkiainian is an extremist ecologist who gets it that there is no hope to change the effects of climate change. He proposes to find a modicum of justice for all, by focusing on those who heartlessly contributed to climate change under the "dictatorship" of the profit incentive; because all are now living under the dictatorship of climate change. It is chaos.
Chaos enters the personal life of Tapani and Johanna Lehtinen, poet and investigative reporter, respectively, when Johanna suddenly disappears. And as he thinks about what has happened, Tapani wonders which is worse--"complete certainty that the worst has happened, or this fear, building up moment by moment? Sudden collapse, or slow, crumbling deterioration?" While searching for his wife, he actually experiences both.

Wrongfully arrested following the Monmouth rebellion of 1685, Peter Blood, country physician and former soldier, escapes the hangman's noose only to be exiled to the tropical colonies. Sold into slavery to a cruel plantation owner, his moral fortitude and medical ability soon earn him the favour of the island's governor and the attentions of Arabella, his master's niece. A classic swashbuckling tale of piracy, romance and redemption, Captain Blood stands as one the greatest adventure novels of the 20th century. Author, Rafael Sabatini (29 April 1875 13 February 1950) was an Italian/English author of romance and adventure novels. He was a prolific writer and produced a new book almost every year, maintaining a great deal of popularity throughout his career, but the titles that secured his reputation were Scaramouche and the Captain Blood novels. Critic Reviews:
"One wonders if there is another storyteller so adroit at filling his pages with intrigue and counter-intrigue, with danger threaded with romance, with a background of lavish colour, of silks and velvets, of swords and jewels" (Daily Telegraph)
"Sabatini's stories abound with drama and melodrama, action and excitement and brilliant colour, as well as minute period detail. No writer, not Scott, nor Dumas, nor Stevenson, has brought the past to life more vividly or accurately" (George Macdonald Fraser)
"Mr. Sabatini is both a wonderfully fertile creator of exciting fiction and a stylist of distinction." (Punch)

The trial in England is truly dramatic and heartbreaking.
What about Michael Maloneys performance did you like?
Maloney's performance is key to the quality of the audiobook. He masters the accents of the Irish, English, Spanish and French characters beautifully, and his dramatic reading on the part of the villains (there are several) made the piece really work.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
That's something I don't think I could do with any book.
    Any additional comments?
One must always realize that a book written close to a hundred years ago, though it was enlightened for its time, still contains the prejudices endemic to the time. A warning to people who love everything politically correct.

Avast, From the Bahamas to the Windward Isles, from New Providence to Trinidad.
Pirates everywhere will enjoy this story, and the ending is very well done.
The odyssey of Captain Blood takes us through most of the West Indies in such a clear fashion that it was easy to pinpoint my location at all times on Google Earth. The journey takes you, from the Bahamas to the Windward Isles, from New Providence to Trinidad.

Ever been tempted to pretend you were someone exotic, someone adventurous, someone different?
Set in Ireland, England, and Australia, this is the funny and heart-warming story of two people whose lives are about to turn upside down and inside out. Eva is off to Australia on a break from her job in a Dublin delicatessen, hoping to forget a fizzled romance and find inspiration for a new career. Joseph is taking a holiday from his stressful London job. Each is on a search for some answers about life. Then something quite unexpected happens. They meet each other.
    Critic Reviews:
"A long, glorious romp with a supporting cast of entertaining characters... a charming story told with large doses of love and humour." (The Australian Women's Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
The story was slow and whiney.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    Work on the story.
Has Upside Down Inside Out turned you off from other books in this genre?
The characters were not ones I would want to know. Eva was pathetic. What was with her inner voice stuff, it was creepy.
Would you be willing to try another one of Melissa Ecclestons performances?
Her voice was not bad, but you could hear her swallowing and having a dry mouth. I am not sure if this was poor editing, but it was unpleasant to listen to.
    Any additional comments?
The story was way too predicable. It was whiny and predicable.
    Delightful
A clever lighthearted story, with lots of human interest and humour.
    Very well read can recommend.
