    Title: Stone Arabia
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Dana Spiotta
    Narrator: Elisabeth S. Rodgers
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-13-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 53 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Stone Arabia tells the story of a brother and sister, Nik and Denise, now in their 40s. The sister is the reluctant caregiver in the family, dealing with an ailing mother and single-parenting her 20-something daughter. The brother is a failed rock musician. Rather than confront his lack of success head-on, Nik creates a highly detailed fictional world where his imaginary band releases records; they're reviewed; there's correspondence with "fans"; fawning press coverage; and more. It's all very ornate, and somewhat charming; if also deranged. He actually makes the music, too, and dutifully sends off hand-crafted editions to his immediate friends and family. But he's winding down his main musical series - a set of CDs started at 20 and he's just issued #1 - and his sister fears the worst....
    Critic Reviews:
"Stone Arabia is a rock n roll novel like no other. Where desire for legacy tangles with fantasy. And identity and memory are in and out of control. A losers game of conceit, deceit, passion, love and the raw mystery of superstar desire." (Thurston Moore)
    Members Reviews:
    Both unconventional and banal
This is a curious little novel seemingly focused on the oddly curated life of a small-time rock starâin actuality, it aspires to examine postmodern cultureâs impact on our ability to connect with each other in emotionally meaningful ways.
The majority of the story is narrated by Denise, the younger sister of Nik Worth, an inscrutable musician who seems to prefer living in a fictional world that he curates through self-produced music, ghost-written reviews of said music, obituaries, and âchroniclesâ that he produces, documenting his not-quite-authentic life. Denise, single, in her 40s, with an adult daughter whose documentary film about her uncle rests yet another layer upon his palimpsest of a life, struggles with her memoryâshe has trouble recalling names, dates, eventsâand news stories about tragedies (missing children, terrorism, torture, mass murder) seem to affect her more powerfully than events in her own life or in the lives of her family members.
An omniscient narrator takes over brieflyâ and rather abruptlyâwhen Denise seems to struggle the most and then relinquishes the narration back to Denise; in addition, the novelâs structure mirrors the circuitous path of Deniseâs free-associative mind (her narration is often sidetracked by digressions). Itâs never quite clear whether Denise is a reliable narrator, since the story itself frankly questions the nature of memory, truth, and reality. Itâs a curious and compelling read that wraps up with an inconclusive mystery, much as it began.
    Altered Reality
Following up her bestselling "Eat The Document," Dana Spiotta moves forward in her writing and sets her eyes on a brother / sister relationship that defies expectation.
Mining similar territory as Don Delillo's early novels - such as the influence of media in today's culture, the strangeness of human interaction, and the alterable nature of what we perceive as "reality" - it's no wonder why Delillo himself is a fan of Spiotta, and has championed her work since her debut novel "Lightning Fields."
She finds the weird and startling beauty of what we know as everyday life.

    Title: Raney
    Author: Clyde Edgerton

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Clyde Edgertons ear for regional voices and his eye for lifes small but significant details enable him to create characters who are charming and utterly convincing. Beginning with an engagement announcement and ending with the birth of a son, Raney is a snapshot of the first few years of a modern Southern marriage.
Narrator Ruth Ann Phimisters soft voice beautifully captures the emotional tides that rise and fall in Raneys life.

Culture shock in a young marriage
Would you listen to another book narrated by Ruth Ann Phimister?
Phimister did a great job of capturing the humor and the frustration of this couple, the only thing distracting is she sounds like an older southern lady, not a 24 year-old girl.
    Any additional comments?
Raney remains an unreconstructed racist and casually uses racist epithets. I don't know how it's possible to still like her, except she's so young and sheltered and barely has an idea what's going on in her own circle, let alone outside it. She's never really examined or questioned her family's worldview. We deal with sexual mores, profanity, pornography, alcoholism, depression, and suicide. The racism isn't dealt with directly; it's part of the slowly changing background.
    Simple and Gratifying
Once again Edgerton weaves a story that feels like a trip back home...quaint as a visit with ones old aunties, funny as a late night of telling family folktales again, and ending too soon and a bit abruptly like all good visits down home do.
Fabulous read for book club discussion.
Where does Raney rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Five Star.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Raney. Raney reminds me of people I know.
What about Ruth Ann Phimisters performance did you like?
    Fabulous reader and singer.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    I laughed out loud.
    Any additional comments?
This was our book club read for May. Raney and her family gave us many topics to discuss at our meeting. I would recommend this book as gift to anyone getting married. Raney's experiences were quiet real.

    Title: Stone Work
    Author: John Jerome
    Narrator: Ed Sala
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-15-11
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In Stone Work, critically-acclaimed author John Jerome describes the back-breaking but soul-strengthening task of building a stone wall on his New England farm. Equipped only with gloves, elemental tools, and the sense to get out of the way of rolling boulders, Jerome tries to reconstruct a wall in a year. The job begins on a whim - he decides to move a stone wall hidden in the woods on his property for the sheer pleasure of seeing it from his house. While wrangling, lugging, rolling, and carting an entity that responds only to gravity and leverage, Jerome grasps the gifts of the seasons and the complexities of being a middle-aged male. Philosophical, yet almost giddy with the excitement of doing something extraordinary, Stone Work is a delight. Narrator Ed Salas gifted storytelling enhances Jeromes graceful prose, and lends vibrant voice to the gentle humor and self-effacing ruminations of a man of letters confronted with lugging tons of rock.
    Members Reviews:
    Great book
John Jerome is an enjoyable writer. He fits into a world of people who do actual things and write about them- somewhere between the Jeffersonian Yeoman ideal and what is now called Creative Nonfiction.
In a world where a lot of people cannot tell the difference between a thing and a thought, Jerome's book is worth a read. You can think about stone walls, or, in the case of the other book of his that I know, rebuilding an old truck, and you can have theories about it all day long- or you can do the work and decide how you feel about it.
I respect John Jerome. He knows how to do work, and he knows how to talk about it. He's honest, which comes from doing real work.
    Written in stone.
John Jerome is a compelling wordsmith. Though I've yet to read any of his other works, "Stone Work" is definitely the craft of a seasoned writer. He conveys his thoughts and feelings poetically, yet concisely; all ruminations have a drop of personal philosophy in them, yet are incredibly grounded in the day-to-day actions of laying a stone wall, living in the country, and being a writer. And therein lies the strength of the work - his ability to tell a story, paint a beautiful moving picture, and convince you of the veracity of his thoughts, as though you were there doing the work yourself. As an honest and beautiful portrait of a slower, more attentive life and the work to be done in it, this is a piece not to be missed.
Food for thought from a good writer
I first read John Jerome probably fifteen or more years ago when I picked up his book, ON TURNING SIXTY-FIVE. I wasn't that old yet, but I could relate to much of what he had to say about ageing and diminished powers. In fact, a few of my friends read the book then too. Sadly, Jerome died just a couple years after publishing that book. Since then I've read his marvelous little book, TRUCK, about fixing and restoring an old pickup truck. And now here is STONE WORK, which will, of course, make you think of Frost's "Mending Wall," which is fine, because Jerome is a fan of Frost, as well as Thoreau and other types who like to futz about in the great outdoors. I found myself skimming and skipping around in this year-long seasonal journal Jerome kept, a tale held together with continued references to the stone wall he was building, with some help from family and friends, but mostly by himself, as well as other manual tasks undertaken around his rural Massachusetts home.

Tusker and Lily Smalley stayed on in India. Given the chance to return home when Tusker, once a Colonel in the British Army, retired, they chose instead to remain in the small hill town of Pankot, with its eccentric inhabitants and archaic rituals left over from the days of the Empire. Only the tyranny of their imposing landlady threatens to upset the quiet rhythm of their days. Both funny and deeply moving, 'Staying On' is a unique, engrossing portrait of the end of an empire and of a forty-year love affair.

    A Pleasant Meander
I was gifted this title for my birthday a few months back and was surprised to realise that I had missed reading it during my school years. First, the Raj, where I was born, has a special fascination. Secondly, I thought I'd read most of the Booker winners. Thirdly, I've read Scott's other works, so how did I miss this. Then I started reading it and got an inkling. I think I might have started this twenty years ago and just not got into it. Fortunately, times have changed and I truly enjoyed this very pleasant listen.
The Raj parts were a bit dated, a bit like Raj India now. It reminded me of my grandparents. I smelled the old decay in the early evening and the transition of a time that refuses (even to this day) to finally lie down and die.
The story really is a bit of nothing, but it is told well, with a suppressed love and a slight longing. I enjoyed the odd pidgin word and the figurative shake of a be-turbaned head.
It took me a bit to get used to Paul Shelley, but ultimately I warmed to him and he to his subject.
I will be passing this little gem onto those who love and have loved old India.
Brilliant. sensitive epilogue to the Raj Quartet
I was a huge fan of Paul Scott when his novels "The Jewel in the Crown" first started being published, waiting for each subsequent novel of the eventual Raj Quartet. Now rereading the epilogue read by Paul Shelly - who is truly a brilliant performer, I am reminded again of Scott's greatness , and his sad death at an early age.
    Dreadfully boring.
Can a book be well-written but terribly dull? This book reminded me of obligatory lunches with my 98-year old great aunt, whose only interests are bridge, attending Anglican Church services and complaining about her gardener. I really tried to finish it, but finally decided that life is too short.
Must read/listen for those who have enjoyed the Raj Quartet
This is beautifully poignant epilogue to the earlier Raj Quartet series (The Jewel in the Crown as televised), and to British India and the lives of the British in India. British racial attitudes are of course in evidence, as they were inseparable from that history, but there can be no other writer who so successfully evokes the tragedy and melancholy of what India meant to colonial Britons. Paul Scott's familiarity with a now vanished world are as essential as are Indian perspectives to recapturing the faint echoes of the Raj.
i felt like i was part of the characters lives
What a well written book with a rather bleak ending i was so sad to say goodbye to the characters , they were written in a way that i felt i knew them and was apart of their everyday lives. Poor poor lucy

    Disappointment
This could have been a great story but it just didn't pan out. There was way too much jumping around. The characters did not seem real. I usually love Fern Michael's books. I was happy to see a new one come out, but this one left me flat.

    Language: English
    Release date: 04-01-11
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Often hailed as the heir apparent to Wallace Stegner, Ivan Doig is among the finest chroniclers of the contemporary American West. In Mountain Time, Mitch Rozier, who has spent half his 50 years writing an environmental column for an alternative West Coast paper, finds himself back under his father's roof, caught up in the ordeal of obligation - you can't not go home again when someone is sitting there dying.
The sisters Lexa and Mariah McCaskill wrestle with a past that has driven them away from domesticity and as far from their roots as they can get. Lexa has long been ready to settle down with Mitch; Mariah, a photographer who uses her camera to shield herself from the world, lands more reluctantly. And the figure from the generation that produced them, Mitch's father Lyle, both beguiles and exasperates as he attempts to rewrite events in his life before he leaves it.

    A Time in the Mountains.
    Ivan Doig, another Great Story!
The end is not unfamiliar to many of the boomers generation.
The discovery of Decades worth of secrets that adult aged children have NO business hearing. Yet I feel as though a goodly portion of us are being "let in on" the secrets as our parents pass into the next stage of their existence. Some parents pass away after laboring their children with these secrets, some drift into dimentia or alzheimer's but leave a memory these boomers would have been better off without ever thinking about, let alone having the details confirmed. Confirmed? Are the memories actually a recalling of real events or are they the passing parent's imagination as they pass into another rehlm? These belabored boomers can never get a completely factual answer.
Upon the finishing of Mountain Time (the first time) I wonder if these revelations made to us by our dying parents are true or a fantasy that the parents have had for scores of years.
My second (& no doubt, third) read will be to listen CLOSELY to the details.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you've been bestowed a "secret"!
    Bill Nelson
    not much story line
What would have made Mountain Time better?
    Story line boring
What was most disappointing about Ivan Doigs story?
Too too long to get to the point
Which character as performed by Scott Sowers was your favorite?
    All
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Scott Sowers is an excellent narrator
Not Wallace Stegner, that's for certain
Ivan Doig's other books were great stories. I listened to this for 6 chapters (almost 2 hours) and there wasn't a plot in sight! There was a lot of convoluted writing and word play, but if Doig thought he had a Stegnerian book, he was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. He even references Stegner, but that reference is as close as this book comes to being on par with one of the 20th century's great American writers. The reader's style does not assist this book, either -- only adds to the confusion of "plot."
Loose ends are tied togather in the suprise ending
I really enjoy how all of this author's books seem to tie together in the stories overlap. like being part of a small town.
    Slow start
The story starts slow, but picks up beautifully after Lyle and Mariah show up and location moves to Montana.

    Critic Reviews:
"This is the thinking woman's beach read, a love story to the modern family, written with a deep and lovely understanding of mothers and daughters and the sacrifices they'll make for each other." (Joshilyn Jackson, author of The Girl Who Stopped Swimming)
    Members Reviews:
    More of a beach read
I do like chick lit, but it needs to have an edge. This book doesn't quite get there, and I don't know why. The story elements are all there: a paradoxical "what if" situation, a woman's choice between two equally fantastic and glamourous lives, all the material wealth that this woman could want.
I think the narrator is very "preppy", to use an outdated word. She sounds as though she is narrating a J. Crew catalogue, and all the male voices have the same personality, like she is speaking with a smirk or a snark. But I do think she's the perfect chick lit reader.
But the story is not resolved. The listener wants this woman to make a decision, and the book ends just right after this, so that you don't see the consequences of her decision. I guess deciding one way or another would connect the author with one or another "politically correct" position and detract from the storybook feeling.
This is a good read if you want to escape for a few hours, and brings up the question I'm sure many readers have asked themselves about the road not taken.
    Thought provoking
    Any additional comments?
A fascinating concept. This book left me wondering about the many choices I have made, and what I might have done in my other life....

Sin embargo, mientras sigue los pasos de su amigo por la isla y habla con todos los que trataron con él, la curiosidad y la necesidad de limpiar el nombre de Estanis le empujarán a investigar una muerte más que sospechosa.

    Good story
Daniel, news reporter, amateur detective goes to Cuba to learn about his friends death from the elusive woman who last saw his friend. An exciting moment in Cubas history makes an excellent background for this story. The author creates an exciting and satisfying ending to the mystery.
good crime story set against the poverty of Cuba
A thoroughly enjoyable and well written detective story set against the poverty of Castro's Cuba, and the sex industry deriving from it. The language is staightforward and the style simple and direct - appropriate for the characters and situation. The sympathy for the poverty of the Cubans, and the very liberal narrator keep the darkness of corruption out of sight, making it entertainment with a message rather than a deep analysis of the situation. Juan Manuel Martinez reads it without rush but with lots of momentum.

NPR loved it and so did i
i was 'way too cool for david cassidy and i hate chick lit with a passion. the NPR review made me take a look at this and i am so glad i downloaded it. the book is rich and wise and beautifully written and by far the "adult" half of the novel is the richest. the narrator is absolutely terrific. and surprise, when i listened to the afterword interview by the author with david cassidy,i came away with enormous respect for him. NOT fluffy chick or teen lit!!!
    Don't recommend
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The story was silly. Also, could have been cut in half (if not more). Spent pages and pages and agonizing pages talking about two young girls obsession with David Cassidy and much less time on who these women were as adults (which was much more interesting!). Did a similar thing when telling us about Bill's life - pages and pages and pages of information that did not add to the book. It took me weeks to get through the book because I kept falling asleep!
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The poor woman tried but not much you can do with a silly story.
    Fun listen
I Think I Love You was fun to listen to, a chance to go back to my teen past and experience David Cassidy all over again. I really enjoyed the 2nd half more, when Petra was grown and had the opportunity to indulge her teen-age fantasy by meeting the idol. The Welsh accent was hard to understand initially, but overall the listen was very satisfying. It was chick-lit type of stuff, so no 5 stars, only 4. The interview at the end was a great addition. I'd recommend this as a "beach read" or just light escapist audio.
Fun premise but too much drivel
Pearson does a terrific job capturing the essence of unrequited longing I remember feeling as a young teenage girl.
