An amazingly clever, entertaining, literature-loving romp...
This book is an amazingly clever, entertaining, literature-loving romp. Adam Langer has written three previous books, all of which I've loved, but nothing he's written before prepared me for The Thieves of Manhattan. If you like literature, this book is truly a fun adventure.
Ian Minot is a writer struggling to find success. He keeps submitting his stories for publication, only to constantly receive rejection notices, while at the same time, his Romanian girlfriend, Anya, is on the cusp of her own successful literary career. Stuck in a dead-end job at a coffee shop, he is incensed by the success of another author's memoir, as somehow an average middle-class guy has convinced the world that he has endured gang fights and prison torture to become a street-wise, slang-spouting road warrior. This anger results in Ian's meeting Jed Roth, a former publisher whose desire to wreak havoc on the literary world draws Ian in. Jed's proposal is simple: Ian will pretend that Jed's adventure-esque novel is his own memoir, one Jed predicts the publishing world will fall head over heels for; at the right time, Ian will admit the memoir is a sham. However, this proposal isn't as cut-and-dried as it seems.
To describe any more of the book's plot would be to ruin some of the surprises it contains, but it has mystery, adventure, gun-toting librarians, even a roadtrip to Kansas. And Langer has developed a literary vocabulary all his own--women wear dresses called "golightlys," named for the main character in Breakfast at Tiffany's, people wear eyeglasses called franzens, named for the distinctive eyewear sported by author Jonathan Franzen, etc. (Rest assured, the book has a terrific glossary at the end so you don't miss any of the inside jokes.) This is a tremendously compelling, fun and intellectually challenging story I highly recommend. Definitely not quite your everyday book!
    Mmm...That's Good Satire
In the acknowledgments at the end of his hilarious new novel The Thieves of Manhattan, Adam Langer doles out "thanks to all the fake memoirists, fictional poets, literary forgers, and hoaxers who have provided such great inspiration." That's funny because it's true -- this novel IS an inspired piece of fiction. It's a skewering of the publishing industry. It's an adventure tale, complete with a treasure hunt. And it's a treasure trove of inside jokes for literary geeks (Philip Roth signs a book to a smarmy literary agent: To Geoffrey, a true human stain...Cigarettes are called "vonneguts"...Trendy glasses are called "franzens".)
Ian Minot is a Manhattan coffee slinger, trying desperately to publish his short stories before the dregs of his inheritance run out.

    Title: Narrows Gate
    Author: Jim Fusilli
    Narrator: Joe Pantoliano, Joe Barrett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-30-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 297 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Audible is pleased to present the exciting novel Narrows Gate by Jim Fusilli, written exclusively for audio and performed by Emmy Award-winning actor Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos) and acclaimed narrator Joe Barrett (A Prayer for Owen Meany).
A powerful epic novel in the spirit of The Godfather and On the Waterfront, Narrows Gate follows the lives of three men in the dangerous and seductive environment of a Mob-riddled New Jersey waterfront town before, during, and after World War II.
For Sal Benno, an errand here and a favor there draw him into the Mafias inner circle and certain danger. His lifelong friend, Leo Bell, hides a deep secret as he informs on the Mob for the Feds and desperately tries to protect Sal. Their fates become intertwined with that of a skinny crooner, Bill Bebe Marsala, who finds fame beyond his imagining but who becomes an unwitting pawn in a Mob war.
    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Jim Fusilli, the Pop and Rock Music Critic for the Wall Street Journal, is the author of the critically-acclaimed Terry Orr crime series, among other books. He was the project editor and a contributing writer for the Audible Original projects The Chopin Manuscript and The Copper Bracelet. He was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, a place very much like Narrows Gate.
    ABOUT THE NARRATORS:
Joe Pantoliano is best known for his Emmy Award-winning role as Ralph Cifaretto on The Sopranos and as Cypher in The Matrix. Joe is the founder of a non-profit organization, No Kidding, Me Too!, which works with the Hollywood community to educate the public about mental illness. He, too, grew up in Hoboken.
Joe Barretts memorable audiobook performances include John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities, and Saul Bellow's Henderson the Rain King.
    Editorial Reviews:
The second you hear Joe Barretts voice in Narrows Gate, you know youre in for a treat, especially since the novel was written especially for audio performance. Barrett has a gravely, world-weary voice that is perfectly suited for gritty, urban crime novels. His voice has a seen-it-all quality to it, and even when he sounds jaded and cynical, you can hear hints of compassion for the flawed characters hes portraying, as they try to do the right thing. This versatile quality surely explains why John Irving personally selected Barrett to perform his gripping, complex novel A Prayer for Owen Meany.
And while Barrett does an excellent job narrating Narrows Gate, the dialogue of this sweeping Mafia saga set in a New Jersey seaport literally and figuratively in the shadow of Manhattan springs to life thanks to actor Joe Pantoliano. Best known for The Sopranos and The Matrix, Pantoliano has long been a highly sought-after character actor, the kind of actor who completely disappears into a role. This unselfish approach to acting works perfectly in Narrows Gate since Pantoliano speaks for dozens of different characters and uses his entire vocal range. It also helps that Pantoliano grew up in Hoboken, NJ, and knows first-hand that piercing, aggressive, staccato tone made famous by many Jersey boys.
The characters in Narrows Gate cover a wide spectrum. There are the inseparable lifelong friends, Sal Benno and Leo Bell, who gradually take different paths in life with dramatic consequences. Theres also Bill Bebe Marsala, a singing sensation who sends girls into hysterics much like the real-life Hoboken crooner Frank Sinatra did decades ago.

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-17-10
    Publisher: Hodder Headline Limited

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger....' writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up '1922', the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerising tales from Stephen King, linked by the theme of retribution. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.
In 'Big Driver', a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself.
'Fair Extension', the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. When her husband of more than 20 years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable, and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. Its a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends 'A Good Marriage'.
Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long-story form.
    Members Reviews:
A fair read from Mr King, but not great
"Full Dark, No Stars" is comprised of four novellas that each deal with individuals living the reality of the common fantasy question "What would you do if..." Each tale explores the darker side of human nature and involves the characters making morally grey (or sometimes utterly black) decisions that have lasting impacts on their own lives or the lives of others.
Whilst I understand King's interest in exploring this disturbing theme, I found the majority of the stories unoriginal, with the exception of one. "1922" basically boils down to the story of a man who becomes tired of his wife and kills her. Although the aftermath has supernatural elements, I found this story dragged on for too long and wasn't very intriguing. It was however quite grotesque, which is King all over.
"Big Driver" was a little more interesting, but still mostly unoriginal: a woman is raped and almost killed and decides she wants revenge on the man that abused her. The story was suspenseful at times and the finale was quite good. However no supernatural elements were present, which is not a bad thing from King. He has written a number of stories that don't have any ghouls and ghosts and they are marvelous to read. I guess I've come to expect more from King.
"Fair Extension" was the most enjoyable of the four stories. I put this down to the enigmatic character of Elvid and what he offers to Streeter, the main character: a life extension and reprieve from the cancer that is eating him from the inside. Of course there is a catch; Streeter must put the burden on someone else, someone he knows well.

    Love the characters and humor
The main character John is the real hero, its humor, and sarcastic views on a privilege community makes the listening enternaining all the way to the last page. The story is of no real importance and is almost comical and lack the fast pacing of an detective story. Ladies will certainly enjoy the story more so than gentemen, there is romance, love, shopping and delightful X rated scenes.
Great fun, but different to Lion's Game
I have enjoyed listening to this story, and came to it having really loved De Milles Lions Game. If you enjoyed the none PC musings of John Corey in Lions Game then this story is a treat, as it is written in the first person and is delightfully revealing of the male psych.
As a story it rambles on a bit, but for me I wasnt looking for an adventure flight, just enjoyable wicked observations from a hetrosexual male. During my commute I was often grinning away very much entertained.
One of its weaknesses was also a strength, DeMille repeats himself many times, or more accurately the character does. However that is a plus with audio as you can keep up with the various character names and function more easily. Great vocal range by Jeff Harding as well.
Not as dark as Lions Game and I have to admit I was wondering when the action (if any) was going to occur. More of a good yarn with nice side line thoughts from the main character.
Language and activities that take place are for 18+.
In summary if you want more of the John Corey type musings this is the book, but it is not the same adventure detective story of the Lions game though.
I have given it 5 stars because as I said it had me grinning and it was just what I was after from DeMille.
    Really good book
I found the story really gripping. Well done again. The narrator carries the story very well.
    Ultimately a love story
This book was long and may be a little repetitive when John was ruminating but it was an enjoyable story with twist of monster threats and horrible in-laws. Often funny

    Highly Enjoyable
Truth be told, most zombie fiction is pretty bad. Whether it be the poor writing or bland characters put into cliche scenarios, I tend to put down most of these books rather than finish them. Thankfully, this book avoids a lot of the pitfalls and tells a funny albeit dramatic story about Star Trek fans trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. It's a fun read for sure, and if you're a Trekkie, you'll love all the Star Trek references scattered throughout the pages. Each chapter is named after an episode which works most of the time.
The wonderful thing about this book is that keeps its eyes always focused on the story. The characters feel real and their encounters can be gripping and sometimes tragic. The concept, while funny, is kept in check by the author's attention to plot and character.
Honestly, this could have been a disaster with lesser skilled writers, but instead, it was a refreshing read that I highly recommend.

    Fun Read
Even several glaring factual errors (both in Star Trek Mythos and in Science) were not able to derail this fun, fun, listen. Even the chapter titles would put a smile on my face. If you enjoyed the movie Free Enterprise, you'll enjoy this book
Trekies vs Zombies, I Loved This Story!
    Mother-Daughter Review
    My Review
Today, all my gentle readers get to find out one of my secrets I am a closet trekkie. Being a lover of the original Star Trek series and a lover of good zombie stories, I thought the two together would be very amusing. This story was a perfect mix of the two.
The authors were great the way they snuck in little bits and pieces of different Star Trek trivia into the story. I especially enjoyed the way the trekkies started fighting off the zombies with the different Klingon weapons.
The zombies are from a brave new world and they are seeking out new life and new civilizations oh wait sorry I slipped for a moment there. The main hero in our story is named Jim (no not James T. Kirk) and he is a closet Trekkie. He is working at a hotel where a Star Trek convention is being held. He was once a military soldier, but now he just wants to sit around and mindlessly do his job. When strange things start happening in his hotel, he can no longer sit back and do nothing.

    Enjoyable
This is an enjoyable book. Good story, not real deep but very enjoyable. A good read that involves all the entanglements of family. A good writer brings them to together and gives you great visual. I recommend.
First introduction to Patti Callahan Henry
This was my first introduction to Patti Callahan Henry and really... it was a good one. I enjoyed the audiobook version. I liked the story of the three sisters, all different but when it comes down to it family is important. I liked the setting and the bookstore within Driftwood Cottage and all the characters that entered that store. Riley's story I particularly liked and lastly I liked that it was the sisters that bonded together and saved the day.
    A surprising great read.
A great tale of family, secrets, resolution, and a bit of coming of age. This story touched me. I think it's a good reminder of what is really important in life, and how to find your way.
Loved this book! It has a good storyline!
Would you consider the audio edition of Driftwood Summer to be better than the print version?
I always like the audiobooks; I get more out of them than reading. This also is my first read of Patti Callahan Henry.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Driftwood Summer?
Driftwood Summer had many memorable moments! Kitsy the Mother had a short but powerful role; the relationship of the daughters and summers gone by; the meeting of Braden's grandparents and the whole setting grasp me.
Which character as performed by Julia Whelan was your favorite?
Julia Whelan is amazing in all the characters!
If you could rename Driftwood Summer, what would you call it?
    Perfect name!
    Any additional comments?
This was my first read of Patti Callahan Henry. I love Erin Hilderbrand's books and have read all but one (saving); I was looking for an author that wrote close to the same as Elin and this book filled that space. It has a great storyline after the first chapter of "events". I like a book with a good story not simply "fall in love~romance" but one with a meat and potatoes story. I was not disappointed in this book at all.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Darby-Jones boardinghouse in Ruby Falls, New York, is home to Mona Jones and her daughter, Oneida, two loners and self-declared outcasts who have formed a perfectly insular family unit: the two of them and the four eclectic boarders living in their house. But their small, quiet life is upended when Arthur Rook shows up in the middle of a nervous breakdown, devastated by the death of his wife, carrying a pink shoe box containing all his wife's mementos and keepsakes, and holding a postcard from 16 years ago, addressed to Mona but never sent.
Slowly the contents of the box begin to fit together to tell a story---one of a powerful friendship, a lost love, and a secret that, if revealed, could change everything that Mona, Oneida, and Arthur know to be true. Or maybe the stories the box tells and the truths it brings to life will teach everyone about love - how deeply it runs, how strong it makes us, and, even when all seems lost, how tightly it brings us together.
With emotional accuracy and great energy, This Must Be the Place introduces memorable, charming characters that refuse to be forgotten.
    Editorial Reviews:
Arthur Rooks carefree Los Angeles life is turned upside down when his wife Amy, a special effects artist in Hollywood, dies suddenly in a freak accident working on set, making Arthur a 30-something widower. Shocked and devastated, he fixates on a mysterious postcard he stumbles upon while sifting through Amys belongings. The postcard leads Arthur to Ruby Falls, NY, where Amy and her best friend Mona grew up together. Coleen Marlo pulls us into this fascinating journey of a man trying to understand his dead wifes past through her narration of Kate Racculias debut novel, This Must Be the Place.
Listening to This Must Be the Place is like listening to a love story told in reverse. Although Arthur and Amy had shared the best times of their lives together in Los Angeles (both were outposts from the Northeast Arthur from Boston, Amy from Ruby Falls), it seems that Arthur barely knows where Amy came from at the onset of this journey. He confronts her past upon arriving at the Darby Jones boarding house in Ruby Falls, where Mona lives with her daughter Oneida and an eclectic variety of tenants. Some of the books best moments took place around the dinner table, with Marlos playful narration of this cast of unique characters. Arthur and Mona come to terms with Amys past and present; meanwhile, Monas daughter Oneida struggles with her own plight to find herself.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of Racculias novel is her thorough development of its characters supporting players included. Marlo is the perfect performer for such a project, as she manages to peel back the layers of each character through voice and emotion. Amys secrets unfold at a tumbling rate in This Must Be the Place, and Marlos characterizations bring insight and authenticity to this engrossing study of human nature. Suzanne Day

Le Premier Jour-Wodehouse meets the DaVinci Code
This was the first book by Marc Levy that I have read. It was a wonderful piece of writing with characterization that created full personalities in just a few sentences. Even the walk on characters came alive. I also enjoyed the variety of dialog, especially reading this in a foreign language. The intellectuals used complicated sentences and nuanced vocabulary in contrast to the more down to earth characters who spoke simply.
In places, the book had the sort of delightful farcical quality of a Wodehouse story. Combined with the science/spiritual fiction that seems to characterize other contemporary French novels, Le Premier Jour was a really unusual mix of humor, pathos, intrigue, and exotic scene. As Levy's web page points out, the book has everything.
I suppose that it all depends on your level of French, but with dictionary in hand there was very little that I couldn't understand. I only wish I could remember the beautiful phrasing and colloquialisms for my own attempts at speaking French.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Roses met at an auction on Cape Cod. Oliver had just bought a Staffordshire figurine - one of a pair - but Barbara outbid him for its mate. The figurines belonged together, and so did the Roses. Now the two objets d'art sat together on a shelf in the Roses' home - symbols of the passion their owners shared. A passion that united them and now was about to tear them apart.
Sharing, for Oliver and Barbara Rose, was a way of life. Living in the mansion they had restored together, with the antiques they had collected together, their rare wines, their orchids, and their children - all the beautiful things they owned - they were happy. Their latest project had been the kitchen, which was to be the core of Barbara's new-found career as a caterer of gourmet foods. Though Oliver was a busy and successful attorney, he had shared all the planning chores with her.
The tipping point occurred when Oliver collapsed with what seemed to be a heart attack, and Barbara, as he had expected, did not rush to his side. Her indifference to his fate was both galling and an eye-opener about the truth of their marriage, a truth based more on materialism than mutual sharing and love.
The War of the Roses is a timeless novel. Yet, this is a story uniquely of our own time, where more and more people measure their happiness and success in terms of the things they possess.
This is the book that inspired one of the most famous movies about divorce ever produced. Shown somewhere in the world every week, the movie is an excellent adaptation of the book that has been translated in almost every language on the planet. The impact of both the book and the movie have made them both classics and brought the title The War of the Roses into the accepted jargon of divorce, describing the terrible hatred and cruelty engendered in the process.
    Editorial Reviews:
There was nothing civil about the 15th-century War of the Roses for the English throne. The same could be said about the guerilla war waged by Oliver and Barbara Rose over their beloved Washington, D.C. mansion in Warren Adlers best-selling novel, The War of the Roses. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner stared in a famous 1989 film adaptation of this 1981 novel, but the film is nothing compared to the newly-released audio version of this delicious black comedy.
Dave Giorgio brings just the right touch to his reading of The War of the Roses. The book gradually gets darker and darker as Oliver and Barbara raise the stakes in their winner-take-all battle over who gets what in their messy divorce. But rather than give the book an over-the-top reading, Giorgio delivers each sentence in a steady, matter-of-fact tone that could also deliver a line like Once upon a time if this were a Grimm fairy tale about two people seriously determined to kill each other.
Giorgio is smart to take a light approach to the increasingly dark subject matter in the book. If he had tried to oversell his lines and give a heavy-handed performance, the novel would have felt contrived and unbelievable. Instead, Giorgios steady, deep voice makes all the ludicrous things the Roses do to drive each other out of the house feel and sound real.
Giorgios understated tone enables the audiobook to pack a serious emotional punch. The movie might have strictly been a black comedy, but Adlers book achieves something more.
