A moving book on race relations with people of color.

The reviews thus far tell little of what this story is about. Although I read it several years ago, as I remember this book, or at least a part of it, centered on the intra-racial divide between those of African descent. The Creoles of color, particularly in the region of the book, have long maintained a somewhat separate status from blacks based on a caste system determined by mixed blood and lineage. The "forgotten people" have maintained they have black blood, but emphasize their heritage also include French, Spanish, and most times Native American blood. Although a great many Creoles eventually assimilated into the black community, during the time of this story, (the 60s, I think) most of them kept a separate status from blacks, thought they were subject to the most part to the same Jim Crow laws and racism as blacks (unless of course, they chose to pass for white- a whole other subject). When Jackson encounters Catherine, they act upon an attraction they had from their school-age days. The unwillingness of both families to accept is at the heart of the story. That a group of people by virtual of the fact they have mixed blood (for that matter, how many blacks are not mixed- whole other book)descended from French planters deem themselves better or superior to others of more distinct African blood and all the ignorance that prevails because of this belief is what this is all about. The reviews talk about Cajuns and indeed this is Cajun country and the different cultures interact, but it is the Creoles of Color that this book is about. Mr. Gaines handles this with his first-hand knowledge of growing up in Louisiana and all of its idiosyncracies regarding race and class. Though the book left me saddened, I enjoyed the subject matter.

Great Gaines!

Gaines is an award winning great author. I especially enjoy his novels because he reflects every nuance of the culture where he grew up, and I can relate to as a fellow Louisianian. The issue of race and skin color among African Americans in a small town, as revealed in this novel, was no surprise to me. Yet, it will probably be instructive to others outside our culture and history. Beyond race and skin color, however, the messages of love and family are universal.

A simple painted story with much depth!

Catherine Carmier is on the surface a story about a young man that returns, after a ten year hiatus and recieving an education, to his boyhood home in the rual parts of Louisiana and falls in love with a local girl. This love sets the tense and uneasy tone throughout which Earnest J. Gaines craftfully reveals much deeper issues; issues of race, distance, family loyalty and shame, and the consquences of forbidden love. Gaines also shows that every part of society has its own set code of honor and unwritten and unspoken ediquette.

A deep, dark fascinating story

The story is compelling, getting deeper and darker at every turn. Humphrey Bower is masterful.

A WASTE OF MONEY

The book could have been an enjoyable listen (although some plot elements are downright beyond belief) but the narration reduces it to farcical levels. The narrator adopts a psuedo South African accent and strange voice intonations for all the characters, which makes them not only comical (at best) but wholly unbelievable and simple minded (at worse). It is off-putting and unnecessary - South Africans do not speak like that. I perservered only because I thought the author could not be blamed for the clownish performance, but my advice is: DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.

First class story and narration

I found The Imposter gripping from the first second to the last. Well structured and a purpose for every minute detail. Damon Galgut paints a sinister, dark post-apartheid South Africa where all the main characters are victims in some way; the effects of the old system can still have a devastating effect, most especially on those who the change was meant to help. It is refreshing to hear a South African read a South African book and do the accents correctly. Humphrey Bowers narration is first class.

I am an absolute fan of Humphrey Bower. I think he may have single-handedly changed my views on the South African accent. I have also become a Fan of the writer, Damon.I have added him to my favourite authors The storey flows with ease short but enough to tell the story. I will be buying another of his books.

A point missed?

I wonder if I just missed the point with this book - where was it going? Was it too subtle for my little mind perhaps? Or just actually not going anywhere...?

Funny stuff

I love this book it is so funny it will make you laugh out loud in places.Some of Mikes tasks will make you go ahhh especially his trip to New York to replace his wifes mug , how romantic. Not too sure about the narrator, so ok Mike is residing in Birmingham , but as a native of the city I found the accent to be that of an actor putting on a Brum accent which can be very annoying. I have met the authour on a couple of occasions and he sounds nothing like this guy, he's much more up market.

Anyway, well worth a listen as unabridged so you get the full monty. Enjoy.

Loved it!

The sample of this audio stayed with me long after I listened to it so I went back to the computer to seek it out and download it. It's my favorite audio book so far. I can see this as a tv drama with Timothy Spall as the lead. It's tailor-made for him. And yes, I did write my own long list of To Do's, I was so inspired by it. I'm thinking of starting a To Do List club with people like us, who want To Do, but often don't.

Bit of a let down

Narrator sounded annoyed throughout the book. Although Gayle states he set out with a purpose in mind, unfortunately it was more about ticking off items. Not so funny either . A shame as I've enjoyed his previous books.

Monotonous

Having read and enjoyed Mike Gayle's, Dinner For Two, I had expected a similar light read from The To-Do List. I hadn't expected exactly what the title had warned me - a book about a 30-something guy, attempting to complete a 1277 item to-do list. (Which he must have repeated at least 1,277 times!). The first third of the book was not even about said list - it was about trying to find reasons why he shouldn't actually attempt the list at all!

This was another book that I would have abandoned if I hadn't been listening to an audible version, expertly read by Dave John. Dave just about kept me listening until Mike finally decided he would attempt the list and the book became slightly more interesting.

Assuming that the family members were Mike's true family, then I was left in supreme awe of his wife Claire, who must be the most long-suffering wife on the planet. She put up with her husband's irratic, frustrating, idiotic behaviour with never more than a rolling of the eyes!

On the positive side, the book is a happy book, upbeat, which seems to be a rare enough quality in literature these days. I was also very relieved that he managed to lose his list at one point - because I have never yet to write a list that didn't get lost before completion!

I would consider reading another book by this author, but I'd check that it was a book of fiction before embarking on it.

Great fun

Just brilliant. By turns hilarious and also deeply moving, this book makes a really enjoyable listen. The Brummie accents help to make it particularly entertaining (no offence to Brummies intended ;))

Much to learn

The book gave me a new perspective of the Middle East as wrapped up in what was Palastine and Jerusalem and is now Israel and Jerusalem. I felt at times that it was taking the author a long time to give proper background for his story, but stay with it and you may be rewarded as I was.

Learned Much, Entertained Greatly

This book teaches so much about all the complex issues in the middle east conflict that involves religion, ownership of land, and grudges that go back several centuries. George Guidall is a great great reader and he does one of his best here. I bought a hard back copy of this book after I listened to this audible, I will read and re-read this one.

Hear, See & Taste It

George Guidall guides the tour, while the author makes sure we get more than the gentile tourist package. I loved the real sense of space and how it is shared, or not. The patchwork of cultures and religions and fervor makes for a more dynamic viewpoint than one can normally encounter. There were many surprises and much to learn from this book. This captured some of the unique driving energy. The plot is just the vehicle that transports us, but an exciting ride for sure. No book has ever given me such itchy feet for Israel.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves elegant prose that doesn't call attention to itself (in other words, its not overdone). It also tells a modern-day story that that is intriguing and doesn't remind me of anything else I have ever read. Highly recommended.

WOW!

Just finished listening/reading. Halfway through the audio, I bought the book. I have been reading and listening to the end and will immediately begin again. I bought this book after watching Alex Garland's Ex Machina, neither one of which can be properly explained but must be experienced. Amazing tesseract.

Swimming

Swimming is not your ordinary swimming book. That was at least what I thought the novel was going to be mainly about, but instead Nicola Keegan writes a novel of a girl who finds a way out from her troubles with death, family, and friends through her passion for swimming. She pushes herself so hard that she becomes an Olympic swimmer. But when it actually comes down to her family and friends, she doesn't have a handle on it and has a breakdown. This story isn't just from Pip's point of view, but the entire book is told from her internal monologue, her stream-of-consciousness. For Nicola Keegan's first novel, I was very impressed at the storyline of her book, although it jumped around a lot, which made me confused. It gave an interesting aspect to the story. What I especially liked about this book was when the writer, started out the story from the perspective of a fetus who is already swimming in the mothers stomach. Swimming is definitely different from most books I've read. It was a good read and even though I thought it was a little lengthy at times, Nicola Keegan got her point across. Even though this book was outside my choice of genre, I couldn't put this book down. This book had an original storyline that drew my attention. It was an interesting read for me because I have never read a book where the main character was a swimmer. Pip is an engaging character and her story is compelling one.

Strokes of Genius..In Fact A Real"PIP"

After reading Keegan's Swimming I found I could not rate it immediately. I had such mixed feelings about the book. I had to let the story percolate through my mind. At times I was infuriated with the run on sentences, lists and psychobabble but at other times I was totally moved by the humor, pathos and brilliance of the writing. The story and the main character ,Philomena, held my interest all the way though. At times I had to stop and mentally congratulate Keegan for a metaphor that was sheer perfection. Keegan's quirky style allows The reader to experience the coming of age of Philomena inside her own head making us privy to all of her shortcomings, fears and hopes. We can see the struggle to cope with unbearable home issues which are the catalyst to Pip's discovery of swimming, a place where she can exhaust herself and focus to such a high degree that the problems swim away with her. Her struggle to fit in,her unique semi- caustic personality and her universal stuggle to be accepted and loved are beautifully rendered by Keegan. The rigors of Olympic training are expertly portrayed often with great humor.

What a disappointment!

I expected a light and charming book similar to the original Lilian Jackson Braun books, since the author used her name in the title. The foul language, the way the plot drifts off, and the subject matter all add up to a big disappointment. I would like to trade this one back for another book. Wish I had read a copy from the library rather than having wasted money on this trash. I have removed it from my IPod.

Don't waste your time!

This was one of the worst audio books I have come across. I was expecting a witty and fun spoof honoring one of my favorite book series. Instead I received a book that ridiculed the Cat Who books and their writer and contained gratuitous sex and language. A very disappointing book, audio or otherwise. Audible.com, you should give a refund on this one!!!

The Cat Who Killed Lillian Jaskon Braun

I to expected a good mystery book by Lillian Jackson Braun, I didn't realize that she wasn't the auther until I statarted listing to it. The foul language and the subject matter all added up to a big disappointment and this is just the first chaper. I had to get up and check to see if I down loaded the right book. Wish I had read the reviews before I purchased it so I wouldn't have wasted my money on this trash.

Sad little book

I like a good parody - but this isn't it. if it had mirrored the whimsical nature of the originals, then it might have been a tale worth listening too. But sadly, it's a loser of a book. I'm sorry I didn't read some reviews before I downloaded it and spent my credit. It's not even a book to go to sleep with! Avoid like the plague is my strong advice.

big dissappointment

I have been a fan of The Cat Who series for years. This is vulgar and crude. The worst book I have ever listened to or read!! The only reason I gave it one star is because no stars was not accepted.

Australian accents!

Definitely a "ripping yarn". It doesn't disappoint...if you can get past the broad Australian accents of the two narrators.

The accent of the first narrator was off putting but I became used to it - and then the second narrator was introduced & it was like nails down a blackboard. I understand it's important, after all the story is Australian, but I have to admit that made me struggle.

Beyond the accents however the story is unexpected, unpredictable & deeply strange (but only in a good way). I admit I've never read a story quite like it, yet it is as compellingly Australian as Ned Kelly.

Listen to the sample & if you can live with the narrator's accent then give it a try, the story is "fanastical".

Fathers and Sons

This story is so well narrated by the leads; you really believe in their characters and find it hard to listen at times, to the traumas they go through. Both appear to be emotionally fragile souls, the father coping with forever being in his brother's shadow, and the son coping with his father's mental eccentricities. You never quite know what is going to happen, but there is a certain air of trepidation, every time the father comes up with a new rant.

Unforgettable!

I absolutely loved everything about this book. Superb narration ? I found the two narrators didn?t just read the story; they really became the characters, and were utterly convincing. The book had me gripped, had me laughing out loud, and I stayed up until 3am last night to finish it! I?m missing it already!

Best book I've listened to by far

If you're a man, this book will teach you about yourself. If you're a woman, this book will teach you about men.

It's about the relationship between a father and a son. It's about the relationship between a brother and a brother. It's about love, it's about disappointment and it's about a dysfunctional family that will make anyone else's seem normal by comparison. And it's about life.

This is a must listen.

A colossal waste of time

The last two sentences of this book read: If anyone does publish this book who would bother to read it? Well, out of 6 billion people on this planet, someone must have two days to waste. Yes, agreed, but how did it happen to be ME? I have never listened to such puerile trash in my life. Is this an explanation of why Australia has such a reputation as a cultural wasteland? The first problem with the book is that it is fundamentally stupid. It has stupid characters, who continually pontificate in an uneducated, pointless stream, and a stupid plot (one time pierced punk female later marries son of richest man in Australia, who dies along with his father and leaves her in total (undisputed) control of richest media empire on earth.
