I love Sisterchicks!

I love all the SisterChicks novels. This one is like all the other Robin Jones Gunn books I have read: well-written, easy to read, hard to put down. I love how she weaves God's working into all her characters' lives so naturally. Lisa may be the most messed up of all the SisterChicks, emotionally, but I appreciate a Sister we messed up folks can relate to. As always, God and her friend give her insights that bring her closer to the person God wants to help her become, and she helps her friend Amy the same way.

I always come away from a SisterChicks book with an appreciation of another part of the world I didn't have before. Robin has a gift for capturing places and people and putting her readers in those places with those people.

Wonderful books!!! I love this Sisterchicks series because they are written about women in their middle years (40+) crossing the "chicken line," to follow their all but forgotten dreams. Robin Gunn Jones does a fantastic job of igniting hope and rekindling old dreams, by telling stories in such a personal way.

True Friends

Friendships come and go. This story was about one that was rekindled. About promises being kept and the way God intervenes and surprises. Sisterchicks say Ooh La La! was all about second chances and forgiveness. I love it! Robin Jones Gunn writing really shows a true lover of God on these pages. It helped me to realize ways I have been lacking in being a friend, and even in being a wife. Great read!

This is a really good book. Of course, I'm a big fan of the Sisterchick books and have all eight in the series. I just wish Robin would write another one. It's a good, clean story that leaves you feeling good about reading it.

Take Off Your Blinders

This book is a great story with fun characters and a twisted sense of humor. The basic plot becomes pretty believable when corporate competition turns ugly and companies like Nike, IBM, the NRA, Mitsui, McDonalds, Burger King, the government, and others will do anything to capture the customer's dollar.

Like most good science fiction, it gives you a new way to look at a twisted future.

Stick with it

The story gets better as it goes on, so don't give up when you first start this book. The narrator is the biggest problem at first, he sounds like someone doing a poor Phil Hartman imitation, but by the end you realize he was perfect casting. Enjoyable and entertaining.

Hilarious and captivating

'Jennifer Government' is by no means a great book, but it sure is an entertaining one. Max Barry takes us on a great ride through a bitterly absurd future where corporations are so influential as to virtually replace governments.

The story is generally well paced. My only complaint would be that I didn't find out as much as I would have liked to know about Jennifer. However, I just saw that there is an unabridged version. Had I seen this earlier, I would have bought it instead.

For fans of fiction and action alike, Max Berry provides good, solid, and not-so-deep entertaining read.

Terrific!

I loved it! You probably need a little bit of a sick sense of humor. It's like Dilbert with a marketing emphasis. I never heard of the author before but I'll look for more by him!

Fun!

It was a fun listen. The tongue-in-cheek satirical style was reminiscent of Neal Stephenson. What depth was lacking in character building was more than made up by the hillarity of the writing. I didn't find the narration all that objectionable, though it certainly doesn't standout. The delivery was excellent, and certainly goes well with the tone of the book. I'm a little disappointed that this wasn't the unabridged version, though.

not his best

Burke is better known for his Robicheaux series and westerns, but he had a personal interest in embarking on this work of historical fiction. Willie Burke, the key protagonist is the author's ancestor. Unfortunately, the characters in this work lack the depth one finds among the underworld misfits that populate the Robicheaux novels. Will Patton does a creditable job with characters' voices, but the combination of his slightly pedantic narrator's voice with Burke's uncharacteristically flat prose makes third-person description occasionally sound like a partially-interested car salesman describing the features of a used Oldsmobile. This may be due to the fact that while he is an expert on Cajun culture since 1950, Burke is clearly not as well versed on the Civil War, or even the nineteenth century, for that matter. Civil War buffs will find much of the plot surrounding camp life and combat somewhat hackneyed. These include a battle scene that will remind the listener of something done by Stephen Crane a century eariler in _The Red Badge of Courage_. Throughout, the imagery and description found in _White Doves_ seems superficial in comparison with the richness one has come to expect in his crime novels. Perhaps I am too critical, as I so enjoyed the Robicheaux series that this book came as a let down.

Good story

I felt a little critical of how the book seemed to jump ahead in time and it felt like something had been skipped over. I didn't realize it was abridged until the end. It probably is a really good story unabridged. The best part was the end when he tells what happened to all the charaters. I also didn't realize it was based on real characters until the end.

I've loved this book for so long. Its more than just football, it reflects life from different perspectives. The characters are not perfect little Christians, but are flawed. The way Jenkins portrays the way they need one another, each turning to God.

Lieutenant Hornblower

I was first introduced to Hornblower books while in grade school, I am now 51 years old and listing to this most excelent adaptation has made me wish to read the whole series again. The narration is excellent and it is a grand story. I would recomend this book to anyone who loves adventure books sea stories.

An Excellent Series

The Hornblower series were introduced to me by my dad. Since then I have read every book in the series. Once I was able to lay my hands on one of the books in the series in my high school and spent every library minute reading the book (they did not allow us to check out books of our choice at this school) till I was finished. I now own several in the series and have over the years picked up the nicer editions from good second hand book stores. I have yet to listen to them on tape or on audible. Now that I have discovered them on Audible i plan to get them for my dad who has now unfortunately gone blind (if i can only find a way to have him use this technology).

If you havent read them yet, i strongly recommend that you give them a try. But, they will grow on you and start and make it hard to stop! The wonderful writing and the descriptions of naval battles and life at the sea in the days of yore make this a most unforgettable series.

Great novel awful sound quality

I decided I really wanted to introduce myself to the Hornblower series, so I checked out which novel would be best to start with, then searched for it here on audible. Very pleased to find it. Low price. Excellent... Or so I thought. I don't understand why audible would compromise it's standards by selling an audition with such extremely poor sound quality. It sounds like it's being read in a toilet cubicle of a train station.

The narration is also quite poor. The narrator has a lovely voice, but his grasp of character are so cheesy, I think they have given me high cholesterol. The book is horribly overacted, making it difficult to engage with the characters. The female dialogue, in particular, is cringe-worthy. I now see that audible carries another version of the novell. I really don't understand why only this version appeared when I searched.

Despite these problems, I enjoyed the story and loved the main character. Will continue with the series if I can find another version.

Poor form, audible! This is one customer who is far from trundles.

book's fine, reader not so much...

The book, as expected, is amusing.But it has a wee problem: given that it's set in Edinburgh with entirely Scottish characters, why oh why have it read in an English accent? (Unless, of course, I'm mistaken and they're all incomers from the home counties....) Irritating: this is why I give it only 3 stars.

I think that Alexander McCall smiths series of 44 Scotland street books are absolutely excellent. It is amusing and you feel like you are sitting in Irene's house seeing her talk about the bus Bertie should take or at Dominicas house listening to her adventures In India I love them. I highly recommend.

Would you consider the audio edition of Accident of Birth to be better than the print version?

Unable to compare, never read the book. Selected the audiobook by cover and title. Happy for a choice in the dark. Worth the credit!!!

What other book might you compare Accident of Birth to and why?

Not sure, I'd have to really think about that. Although I have traveled overseas and worked with foreign individuals. So, I can understand the trials and tribulations of those that are not born in the US, and that they truly survive the best way they know how, and their survival in the US, their financial stability/gain is solely sought for the aid in helping their families at home.

Yes, not cry, but truly made me visualize the characters and why they took that walk out on the tight rope [so to say] for what they believed in.
