I found this book hard to get into. Typical Chick Lit story. Although the Narrator was ok, the story was predictible. Not one of Barbara Delinsky's best.

Sabrina Castro is a wealthy, attractive woman married to an older physician who no longer fulfills her dreams. An accidental misstep leads her down the path of moral disintegration. How she comes to terms with her life is the theme of this absorbing personal drama played out against the backdrop of an old Peninsula estate where her mother lives among her servants, her memories of Boston, and her treasured family archives. Now on audio for the first time, A Shooting Star displays the storytelling powers that Wallace Stegners fans have enjoyed for more than half a century.
    Critic Reviews:
One of our greatest contemporary novelists. (Washington Post)
Masterly and engaging. (New York Times Book Review)

Stegner has given us so much better than this!
I'm finding it hard to believe that the same author who gave us Angle of Repose and Crossing to Safety wrote this novel. A Shooting Star is predictable, tedious and reads like a romance novel. I found the characters stereotypical and annoying. There was none of the emotional investment I have come to expect from Stegner. My advice? If you are new to Stegner, do not start with this book.
Hard to Care for Poor Little Rich Woman.
This is the first book by Wallace Stegner that I was happy to be done with so I could move on to something better. Wallace had a tough sell to make the reader care about the problems of a spoiled rich woman, and I imagine a lot of readers like myself won't find enough character or substance to hang their hat on. I love Wallace Stegner's writing, but in this case, he chose the wrong subject matter. I highly recommend his other works.

    Language: English
    Release date: 11-01-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 40 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
All his life, for almost as far back as he could remember, Victor had had a phobia. In prison, inevitably, he reflected on the grotesque way it had begun, about the panics and violent anger. He asked himself, too, why the child of happily married, middle-class parents should have needed to make motiveless and unreasoning attacks on women.
Holed up in that house with the girl, he had not meant to pull the trigger. It was panic. Panic, which came over him like a second skin, prickling him all over, crawling on him.... An attempted murder not only brings Victor Jenner face to face with himself, but also involves him in a strange and doomed triangular relationship.

    Live Flesh
What made the experience of listening to Live Flesh the most enjoyable?
It was a pretty engrossing listen - interesting and dramatic. Rendell (as ever) brought the characters to life and the twisty plot really complemented the slightly drab suburban London background.
What other book might you compare Live Flesh to, and why?
Any thriller really - I note that Pedro Almodovar based his film, 'Live Flesh' on Rendell's book (although it was a pretty loose fit...) so it's clearly quality material.
What does Ian Holm bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
I don't recall ever reading the book, but Ian Holm's performance was excellent - especially whilst portraying the main character, Victor.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
There already is a film of this book!

Brunonia Barry, the New York Times best-selling author of The Lace Reader, offers an emotionally compelling novel about finding your true place in the world.
Zee Finch has come a long way from a motherless childhood spent stealing boatsa talent that earned her the nickname, Trouble. Shes now a respected psychotherapist working with the world-famous Dr. Liz Mattei. Shes also about to marry one of Bostons most eligible bachelors. But the suicide of Zees patient Lilly Braedon throws Zee into emotional chaos and takes her back to places she thought shed left behind.

Her father, Finch, long ago diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, has been hiding how sick he really is. His longtime companion, Melville, has moved out, and it now falls to Zee to help her father through this difficult time. Their relationship, marked by half-truths and the untimely death of her mother, is strained and awkward.
Overwhelmed by her new role, and uncertain about her future, Zee destroys the existing map of her life and begins a new journey, one that will take her not only into her future but into her past as well. Like the sailors of Old Salem who navigated by looking at the stars, Zee has to learn to find her way through uncharted waters to the place she will ultimately call home.
    Critic Reviews:
This is a lovingly told story with many well-drawn characters, who sooner or later consider the courses charted by personal decisions and circumstances. (Publishers Weekly)

    Full to the brim
This book had a lot of different stories going on at once. So much so that it was sometimes hard to get centered. Several times I found myself stopping to try to figure out what a subplot had to do with the main storyline. The overall message, I believe, is how relationships evolve and holding on to the ones worthwhile.
    Bad Narrator
It might have been an awesome book but I couldn't stand more than 20 minutes of the narrator's voice.
I love getting lost in Ms. Barry's Novels.
My favorite all time book has always been The Lace Reader. Now both books are my favorites,
    Interesting Story
Would you try another book from Brunonia Barry and/or Alyssa Bresnahan?
    Yes
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Add a more color to the description of the environement.
Which character as performed by Alyssa Bresnahan was your favorite?
    Melville
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Probably
    Any additional comments?
Alyssa Bresnahan can make a mediocre book worth reading.
    The Map of True Places
I really enjoyed this book. I selected it because Brunonia Barry's Lace Reader is on my list of all time favorite books. Map of true places has found it's place on my list too. The story is intricately woven, the characters are complicated but believable. I loved that there was mention of some of Lace Reader's characters. Thank you Ms. Barry for another entertaining book.

    Language: English
    Release date: 01-21-10
    Publisher: Recorded Books

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
In this poignant and striking final chapter in the Duane Moore story, which began in 1966 with The Last Picture Show, Pulitzer Prize- and Oscar-winning author Larry McMurtry takes readers on one last unforgettable journey to Thalia, Texas, a town that continues to change at a breakneck pace even as Duane feels himself slowing down.
Returning home to recover from a near-fatal heart attack, Duane discovers that he has a new neighbor: the statuesque K. K. Slater, a quirky billionairess who's come to Thalia to open the Rhino Ranch, dedicated to the preservation of the endangered black rhinoceros. Despite their obvious differences, Duane can't help but find himself charmed by K. K.'s stubborn toughness and lively spirit, and the two embark on a flirtation that rapidly veers toward the sexual -- but the return of Honor Carmichael complicates Duane's romantic intentions considerably. As Duane reflects on all that he and Thalia have been through, he feels adrift in a world where love and betrayal walk hand in hand and a stalwart Texas oil town can become home to a nature preserve.
Rhino Ranch is a fitting end to this iconic saga, an emotional, whimsical and bittersweet tribute to the lives of a man and a town that have inspired readers across decades.
    Critic Reviews:
"[A] top-shelf blend of wit and insight, sharply defined characters and to-the-point prose. (Publishers Weekly)
"In Rhino Ranch he treats his many loyal readers to a last roundup of characters so everyone can have a sense of closure, a view of what happens to them. His ardent fans, the ones who have been on the trail with him since The Last Picture Show or Texasville, will have their fill." (The Washington Post)

Buddies Duane & Billy remind me of Gus & McCall.
McMurtry has done it again...love the characters, buddies Duane and Billy. Life in small town Texas.
    Can't win them all.
Definitely not one of his best for sure. Narrator did a good job with a difficult story.
    Love Will Patton
I could listen to Will Patton all day. He makes a story come alive. Rhino Ranch gave me several characters to remember.
fitting opposite bookend to The Last Picture Show
Just finished it, and loved it as much as the first book in the series. It captures the essence of aging as well as The Last Picture Show captured coming of age.
    A great read
McMurtry touches on modern day global connections, stretching from Sri Lanka to the African continent. It's a switch from his resilient yesteryear sagas but manages to capture outdoor freshness sprinkled with the familiar style of humor and spontaneity found in all his writings. No problem with a five in my book.

When Felicia Potter enters the ward to visit her comatose father, Dr. Ernst sees the opportunity to spice up his grim routine with a little romance. What he cannot see is how his relationship with the young attractive model will call into question his integrity, his dedication to his career, and just how far he will go for the sake of his lust.

A must-read for those those in the medical profession
Before taking on Richard Dooling's "White Man's Grave" (a National Book Award finalist), I decided to try out a shorter work of his, namely this 1992 debut work. Frankly, there's not much of a story here. I think even each of the five-star reviewers on these pages would attest to that.
What there is, however, is wonderful insight on the medical profession, especially regarding the dynamics and motivations of ICU care. For anyone in medicine, or even for someone who has a good friend or relative in the profession, "Critical Care" is a must-read. For those who live the life depicted in Dooling's book, there will surely be laughs, head-shaking assents and the occassional exclamatory "Yes!"
Where this book also excels is in its depictions of where the medical and legal professions intersect. In fact, the hospital's in-house counsel has some wonderful things to say to the book's protagonist, Peter Werner Ernst, about 'the truth':
"You must understand that in any litigation conducted by competent attorneys the truth will come out; it's only a matter of when. you must also understand that it is far better for both you and the Medical Center if the truth comes out sooner rather than later."
"Cross-examination can be a very unpleasant experience, even for a witness who is telling the truth. Successfully telling lies is almost impossible. Lies change. The truth does not change. If the honest witness gets confused during questioning, he or she need only remember the truth and cling to it and give the same, consistent answers to every question, even questions for which the witness is unprepared. If the witness is not telling the truth, his or her story will change. A good lawyer will easiliy detect that change and will let the witness go on changing the story. Then the lawyer will confront the witness with each change and ask him to explain it. In his panic, the witness can't cling to the truth because he is lying under oath, which is a crime. More changes inevitably appear. Then, as you can imagine, things get worse...It can be a humiliating experience."
Not only is that superlative writing, it's also about the most spot-on writing on that subject I've ever encountered. I was recently a witness to a cross-examiniation in which that exact sequence of events unfolded. A witness got tripped up in a key lie - he told it once in the morning depostion, then messed it up when trying to re-tell that afternoon. When the lawyer pounced on those differences, it wasn't a pretty sight. The truth would have been a far more effective strategy. Kudos to Mr.

"Riveting, passionate, and powerful ... everything a romance should be." (Amanda Quick, NYT best-selling author)
    Members Reviews:
A romance with a plausible story
What did you like best about this story?
Relatable characters with imperfections, not a totally outlandish storyline.
Who was the most memorable character of Comanche Heart and why?
Swift- A man with flaws and strong characteristics, yet a tender heart full of masculine love.
Not the best narrator but good story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes I have already
If youve listened to books by Catherine Anderson before, how does this one compare?
This is the second book I listened to I like the story and it continues very well from the first book. I wanted to hear more about the people in the first book Comanche Moon and this gave it to me. If the narrator was a little better it would have gotten more stars.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The voice does not match the part of a young girl telling the story she sounds like an old lady.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The ending and climax were exciting.
    Any additional comments?
I like westerns and historical novels. If you like those too then you should read this book it is a good story.
    Once again, Catherine Anderson delivers!!!
I have long read Catherine Anderson's novels and was thoroughly impress by the audiobooks. The narrator and author deliver a most powerful performance and careful attention is paid to details... I look forward to every book that is written and recorded....
    Awesome story
One needs to read Commanche Moon to feel the heart in this story. The author brought tears to my eyes with her deep knowledge of one who has been violated multiple times. Done with heart and style, I think catherine captured the emotional dwellings Amy suffered.
I Hope Catherine takes this a step futher and portrays the daughter who is half breed and what it was like back in the day growing up. I think she will be able to write it well.
    wonderful
This book follows on the heels of Comanche Moon.
It is a book that you are sorry to hear it come to an end.
